- Gouache, an opaque watercolor, has wonderful practical uses but also its own challenges. In this workshop, we will learn John Muir Laws’s gouache system and learn how to set up our own gouache palette. What paints should I use? How can I avoid the paints cracking and falling out of the palette? We recommend that you wait to buy your gouache paints and palette until after this workshop. Then bring your palette to the next workshop.
Here are Jack's color choices for the light value palette. 1st column (not row): Permanent White, M Graham Hansa Yellow Light. 2nd column: Holbein Permanent Yellow Orange, Holbein Brilliant Pink. 3rd column: Holbein Lilic, Holbein Aqua Blue. 4th column: Holbein Leaf Green, Holbein Permanent Green Light. 5th column: Schmincke Titanium Gold Ochre, Holbein Yellow Ochre. 6th column: Holbein Gray #1, Holbein Gray #2.
Big surprise when I found out this was just 8 hours ago! So I am inspired to get into the owl painting. What a great gift that owl gave to all those hundreds of people .... Short life, fantastic impact !!!
Just got a gouache set for my birthday. Perfect timing on the video! Thank you for another very informative video.
I love the gauze trick! After encountering the cracking and falling out of the palette issue with gouache I had kind of given up on using goauche in the field. But this is very cool. I will have to try again.
Use porcelain palette for gouache. Etchr makes nice travel palette in porcelain
Use tubes of qouache
James Gurney suggests that you can buy white gouache and color it with your water color pigment.
Hi. Did you mean mixing watercolor with white gouache to make it opaque? I've been curious about this. Wonder if that will desaturate the colors?
@@barefacedquestions yes.... Watch James Gurney you tube videos. He makes some corrections by tinting gouache with water color pigment.... Other artists use opaque white pens for special effects with wayer color too. John Muir Laws nature journals for one.
After my grouche cracks I just take good ole hot glue and glue the pieces back to the pallete and it seems to work well for me
I take the little peices out. Then glue them back in with wet paint. Seems to work pretty well.
Hi John. I wonder if I can use a different brand of gouache. I can not find here in town M.Graham brand. We have Windsor and Newton. thanks.
Great brand you use. Pile up every evening en veggie glycerine for the old. On CZcams there are a lot of tips !
Pile up from tubes
have not watched yet but great title!
Has anyone tried adding a drop of glycerin to their gouache to prevent cracking and aid in rewetting? I have some cheap (Reeves) tubes, thinking about trying it out. I have some gum arabic too. I'm brand new at this, but thought it might be fun to try.
To avoid problems, you might want to reach out to the manufacturer for the most authoritative answer. According to M. Graham, it’s not recommended for their gouache. When I called, the M. Graham rep discouraged any adulteration of the gouache, or the use of dry/pan gouache. The use of only fresh gouache was encouraged to get the intended results.
try some arabic/glycerin/honey with clove oil to discourage bacteria/fungal growth, that might work. Only test it though! Like only do it to an eeny teeny bit to see if it works, different companies have different formulas so idk how reeves will react. I've done it to some cheap-o no name chinese brand and it worked out alright.
I have added glycerin to my palette of arteza gouache and it has not cracked at all. It’s been almost a year now. It doesn’t appear to have changed the integrity of the paints either.
What are colors in dark gouache palrtte
