- Eddie Jones spent 15 years in the league as your prototypical swingman playing an important role on both ends of the floor for the majority of his time in the league. He was the athletic scorer in LA before Kobe Bryant, and even when Kobe was brought in to likely replace him, Jones showed his character by mentoring Bryant. He spent his best individual season in Charlotte which saw him lead the NBA in steals in 2000. He then became a fan favourite in MIami where he would spend the next 5 years of his career before playing for 3 teams in 3 years (including a second stint in Miami) to finish his career. But Eddie Jones did all this and still seemed to fly under the radar, because he didn't want or need the spotlight and was fine with being a second or third option behind some of the biggest stars of his era. Regardless of the situation you also knew what to expect from the 3 time all star, Steady Eddie Jones.

Eddie Jones was a solid 2way player that really was a 3 and D type of shooting guard/SF in the 90s before it was popular. As a slasher he was a very good 3pt shooter and a willing passer whom was always a great team player. 👍

Yea when Jones was in L. A. and on Charlotte he gave Mitch Richmond and alot of other 2guards problems on both ends especially on Defense. Jordan and JR Rider's bully midpost game gave Eddie Jones fits in stretches.
He was way too talented for a 3 and D guy. Since when are these types of players nominated for All NBA Teams? EJ would have been amazing in this era!

He was always recognized for his defense on& off of the ball eventhough he was a slasher that shot the 3pt shot well in his prime with Lakers I know he was too talented but them coaches in L A were trying to forcefeed Shaq and they had too Many scoring players around his position at the SF/2spot even before kobe got major playing time. With the hornets he showed more of his all around offensive skills as a 3level scorer.However in Miami he sacrificed his stats again where he mainly defend the toughest wings and camp out on the wings and the corners for the 3pt shot or for the drive back door .I do agree he would be even better in this era. However he got hated on and overlooked with the Lakers for his nice guy pass 1st mentality ( but he couldnt consistently develop in the clutch with kobe and VanExel dominating the ball forcing it in too Shaq while horry was the main other target available in bail out open shots)which was stupid because Jones would have been great in the triangle offense.
he helped bring the Lakers back to playoff level a few years before Shaq and Kobe arrived. Also it seemed his last year or two in LA he was constantly rumored to be traded for Webber, Gugliotta, Penny, just to name a few
I remember Eddie Jones very well. He was a part of that Lakers team after the Magic Johnson era and before the Shaq Kobe era. They also had Nick Van Exel and Cedric Ceballos. I can still see the billboards promoting "The Lake Show." People tend to forget that it was a very respectable team. They only missed the playoffs once and were a 53 win team when they got Shaq and Kobe. Yeah, Eddie Jones is a forgotten ALL STAR but that whole team is forgotten even by Lakers fans. Oh well.......
Elden Cambell was another of that core. It always bummed me out that none of those guys were around when we finally won a chip.

Eddie Jones was a really fun player to watch and he was very professional. Appreciate the respect you put showing his influence on two of the greatest guards in nba history. Really wished we could have gotten him 1.
Me too .I felt that Eddie Jones could have came back to the Lakers in the SFslot in Glen Rices places and did more and a better fit in the triangle offense in 2001 but instead he left Charlotte and went to Miami in the trade.
When I think of Eddie Jones, I can help but thinking of Reggie Lewis, same build, athleticism, both smooth. Eddie was a better defender and Reggie had a higher PPG, both were extremely solid players who all too often get forgotten when remembering the great wings in league history. Eddie was the consummate pro, a selfless, egoless player who easily could've had gaudier stats at the expense of his teams. Thank you for the breakdown of such a criminally underrated player and teammate.
That's a great comparison I remember Reggie Lewis being a stellar long wing player . Steady on both ends and had a nice midrange and midpost game .

interesting comparison. I never would have imagined that idea, Eddie was kind of stringy, maybe couldn't used more bulk when looking at Lewis, he looked beefier. I know he had passed unfortunately in '93 so I didn't see what he was capable of and '92 was when I started paying attention to bball. I could see maybe the attitude being the same, like professionalism maybe, Reggie seemed like a quiet man but level while bringing it 100. Eddie was one who even if he had reason to complain he'd never complain and that was missed when the Lakers traded him so on that note, yeah they were both pro's pros.
He was my hero in my high school days. Miss him a lot.

I liked Eddie Jones so much as a kid. I remember liking him way more than Nick Van Exel.
Eddie Jones was a 90s/early 2000s Paul George. Jones averaged 17-20 during his prime in an era where teams averaged less than 100 ppg. He was also an incredibly efficient 3 point shooter. Jones, for his career, shot 37% from 3 taking 4.3 per game. In today’s game Jones would’ve averaged between 7-8 per game. If you translate that into today’s era he would’ve easily averaged between 22-25 ppg.
The similarities between Eddie and PG are endless. Both are long, lanky wings who are excellent defenders. No one is going to confuse Jones athletic ability with young Kobe’s just how everyone knows that George isn’t the athlete Zion Williamson is but both were plus athletes who have plenty of high rise finishes above the rim.
Another similarity between the two is their ability to be great teammates and mentors to younger guys. Young Paul George had some despicable behavior with former teammate and close friend Roy Hibbert’s wife but aside from that not one teammate has spoken negatively about George. He hasn’t complained about being traded and he’s been a profitable piece whoever he’s gone.
The same can be said about Eddie Jones. First, he mentored Kobe, who eventually took his job, in LA. After a short stint in Charlotte where he averaged a career high and had an All Star appearance he went onto Miami where he was a great mentor to Dwyane Wade.
So for those of you wondering what kind of player Eddie George was I hope this gives you somewhat of an idea.

Before there was high definition television I used to watch the lakers and get Eddie Jones and Kobe mixed up cause they were same height and size but mostly cause Jones wore 6 and Kobe wore 8. On TV before high def it was hard to tell the numbers apart
Love these videos. But show more of the footage. Eddie was a defensive WIZARD and you didn't show any of his complete lockdown footage. I modeled my whole game after Eddies defense. That's how good his defensive effort was.
Eddie was a fan favorite in LA before and even after Kobe arrived. A really good 2-way SG with phenomenal athleticism. It’s crazy how he essentially had to leave before 2 of the greatest shooting guards in NBA history (Kobe, Wade) could blossom into what they inevitably became. And they both became champions right after his departure. I remember Eddie very well though. Him and Nick van Exel were the bridge players for the mid 90’s Lakers, just after the Magic Johnson era and just before the Shaq and Kobe, that kept the excitement going in LA in between eras.
No love for the pre-Nick Van Exel season...Tony Smith, Sedale Threatt, Vlade Divac & no playoffs??? LoL
And also add in the last Heat player to wear number 6 before Lebron James arrives in Miami was Eddie Jones. Jones can’t catch a break, like you mentioned, when he left those respective teams, he immediately gets replaced by the top 3 SGs in NBA history. Then after, his number 6 jersey during his time with the Heat immediately gets erased cause of Lebron James tenure.

@@Riles3152 Elden Campbell is one of my favorites. Did you know he lead all PF in block shots (on a few occasions)? He's play was great when Shaq was out, but with Shaq...he would disappear.
@@OG_Fernando Yea I think his not so positive nickname used to be "Seldom" Cambell 😭Elden was actually a legit talented big man, and definitely had his moments where he would play like a near star. His game was made for the 90's era of big men.
EJ was my favorite player with the Lakers, even helped train local Philly phenomenon Kobe when he was at Temple University.
My favorite player, Kobe was his backups, led the CLT is every category, was MIA's original #6, an all-star, played defense, even was hand picked by MJ to rep the Jordan brand & that finger roll from the 3pt line is classic.
Goddamn love Eddie Jones. I always forget that his time in Charlotte was just one year because he was so dominant there, and I completely forgot he was on Dallas in '08.
Good throughline on how he kept missing championship opportunities and runs with just rough luck overall.

It used to trip me out when I would see Jones on Memphis and Miami again but it made me happy to still see him a former Laker still in the League and videos games. Now I realize it was only about his 10th season in the League.

Jones would have meshed in a tri angle offense because he's a very good slasher and passer that was a serviceable catch and shoot player from 3point range while being a great defensive player.
@@carlwallace1129 I agree EJ would have thrived in the triangle offense. He could guard from point guards to small forwards a bit similar to what Pippen did, and on offense he wouldn't have demanded the ball much. Maybe the Lakers could have won more than 3.
Awesome player. He kept getting injured early in the season in what was probably his 2nd and 3rd seasons which was unfortunate. His game would translate so well in todays game. I remember there were trade rumors with someone on Sacramento -maybe for Richmond(?). So when the Lakers played Sacramento, Jones got his personal season best in points that game. I was guessing that he wanted to show his value and not to trade him there.

Eddie was brilliant and I hate he missed out on the Rings with The Heat and Lakeshow. He was such a great wing.
Crazy how 3 of the 5 teams he played for went on to win championships within 1-3 years after his departure and the fact he returned to the Heat after they won the chip only to get swept by the Bulls is just wild
Eddie will always be a Lakers favorite, I was too young to really remember him as a Laker but I've been told I threw a tantrum as a toddler upon learning he wasn't on the team anymore lol.
I do wonder if him being traded was even necessary as Glen Rice only lasted two seasons as a Laker and we gave up Elden Campbell who would've been a better backup than anybody we had during the threepeat for Shaq or even as a PF.
