  • Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by nine-time Wimbledon winner Martina Navratilova to talk about tennis, trans athletes and Emma Raducanu's performance.
    Piers brings up Tom Daley and Megan Rapinoe taking to social media to express their 'outrage' of trans athletes not being allowed to compete and Martina explains the biological advantage that comes with growing up in a male body, saying "sports biology matters". Piers also brings up the fact that Martina's former tennis coach Renee Richards is trans and Martina says Renee agrees with her stance on the issue.
    They then go on to discuss Emma's win at Wimbledon against Alison van Uytvanck and whether she has a chance of winning the whole contest. Martina believes she doesn't, telling Piers her forehand is not strong enough and she is not fit enough. She also thinks letting go of the coach who helped her win the US Open was a mistake.

    Do you think Emma Raducanu will win Wimbledon?

    • @TheJhtlag
      @TheJhtlag Před rokem +25

      No. Attending the Met Ball after US Open was a bad sign, she got stars in her eyes, enjoyed that a little too much. As Martina said, she's out of shape, needs to go to tennis boot camp. Leylah did that, not saying she's now a world beater, but clearly been putting in the time, looks a tiny bit "thicker" (genes are genes so nothing huge) so some sort of strength programming going on there. Emma needs to do the same and disappear for some time and do the work. Usually players do that late in the year and show up at the AO with their new skills and body. No shortcuts, which must be what she thinks switching coaches so often.

      Right on, dude. I'm glad they didn't discuss Roe v Wade because Piers has little rapport with people in general and Martina had tons of personal struggles related specifically to her choice of partners, her leaving her folks and native country, etc ad infinitum, but she always believed in herself and her core.
      She was equivalent to Mac from the female side as both she and Mac played and won in singles, dubs, and mixed consistently. Martina's too reserved to say it, but she was easily as good at dubs as Serena was , but Pam Shriver was not as good at dubs as Venus and both the Compton kids had great serves MN was Basically the female version of McEnroe, but much less in your face with her opinions than John ("You can't be serious" McEnroe). His younger brother Pat was just as good at dubs (almost anyway) but didn't have 6' 4' Peter Fleming handling the deuce court.

      I would respect her more if she called out the US Open/USA for not allowing unvaccinated players. This is a very similar issue, political bs. Vaccines that were designed for a virus hat stopped existing 2 years ago and do not stop transmission. So just as the world number one was not allowed to play at Wimbledon, one of the 3 best players of all time will not be allowed to play at the US Open for some equally bogus reason.

    Martina always talks common sense. Honestly, this interview was great without the misleading headline - WHY do this? The headline is not a true and accurate reflection of Martina's very fair assessment. _"I don't think she'll win Wimbledon this time around but certainly has the potential to win it one day"_ is not "She WON'T win WIMBLEDON!"
    And, for the record Martina was in 2 Grand Slam finals before she finally won her first when she was 21. Roger Federer was 22 when he won his first. I'm not saying Emma is/will be as good as them (nor am I saying she won't be) but she's 19. She's going to make mistakes along the way. She completed a "normal" schooling, and has only had one year on the main tour. Very promising.

    FIANLLY! Been saying this for nearly a year. Thank you Ms Navratilova for calling Raducanu's mistake. She should never have let go her coach that got her the US open. Granted the in-experience but there was obviously great chemistry there. She should have gave him 6 - 12 months at least to see where they're really at on the WTA Tour. A bad decision IMO.

      Arrogance has a price. Emma was nothing but arrogant after winning. If you recall her speech after winning, she was over confident too assuming that she will play finals regularly. And immediately the next week, she fired her coach.

    Please Piers Morgan, ask Navratilova her thoughts on mixed doubles tennis events on how that discipline can accommodate trans athletes. That event should have the highest potential to be inclusive and the best chance. Certainly exhibitions are needed to iron out what is fair game.

I don’t think Emma will win Wimbledon this time around but who knows. I feel for Emma this always happens the Media builds young up and coming people up then when the slightest thing goes wrong tears them down it’s not on. I wish Martina & Emma well.

  • @michaellee888
    @michaellee888 Před rokem +9

    Wonderful perspective on Emma. Emma has to be present in her matches. It could be simply growing pains as she is a teenager and a product of the covid19 era which handicapped players like Emma with less opportunities to play. Things will settle down for her as she matures on her goals, motivations and inspirations. Go Emma!! Navratilova gave Emma a seal of approval on her potential. Sky is the limit or no limit!

That's very short sighted, narrow minded and discriminatory. What's the matter with you?! You can be a fan of Leylah, but bullcrapping about endorsements is just not cool. Had Emma been without endorsements, then what's the excuse? Nothing! It's match experience and unfortunately with experience that takes time.

    In Emma Raducanu's case, it very much look like biting the hand that feeds. Not necessarily by Emma herself, but someone made the decision to cut ties with the coaching that led her to win the US open, and her record since then has not been so impressive. She may have had injuries but you can only blame that to a certain point, they haven't stopped her from competing after all.
