- Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by TalkTV contributor and lawyer Paula Rhone-Adrien, broadcaster Alex Phillips and political journalist Ava Santina to discuss the ongoing ‘sanitising' of children’s books as the Beano comics undergo a 'woke' transformation to introduce a more diverse cast and change some 'offensive' language used to describe some of the characters.
Piers Morgan believes it's ridiculous to try and censor words like 'fat' when used jokingly in young children's books, comics and films and that it in fact does more harm than good for helping their anxiety and confidence. He also finds it even more worrying that modern media will often celebrate morbid obesity in the form of 'body positivity'.

I was bullied as a fat kid and I had to stand up for myself at some point. You know what? I thank God for that because now I am a man ready at anytime to tackle the world if it comes at me.

I also wanted to say from growing up with the Beano and other comics, they taught me about the real world - like how to deal with bullying and also how to solve problems because the bolshi characters were always getting into scrapes and finding ingenious ways to save their backsides! My own kids did that too! It also made us confident to go out and have our own adventures...

Most sensible comment. When people try to be offensive it is because they are trying so to be and I think our kids (and adults) should learn that it says more about the 'offending' person than about them. The expression 'water off a duck's back' comes to mind.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" is a good mantra for kids to remind themselves not to let things said get to them. You aren't in real harm. They are just words and you decide how you react to them.

It surely works for all average growing-up scenarios... But when there's a structural apathy from people in charge and there's a psychopath among the kids, the thoughts and feelings inside a child's head when that psychopath is constantly whispering trash in his ear, go beyond the control of choice and the reactions are no longer a matter of decisions... In such an instance, the words start having very somatic effects... Of course, in a normal setting, such psychopath kids would be caught and reined in by educators or other people in charge, in which case the mental hurt will remain in the realm of free choice indeed. (it's just that not all children can grow up in a normal setting)

I was bullied in high school. There's always going to be bullies. It's fine trying to teach them that calling people names is wrong but you're never gonna get rid of bullies. Well, it all began with participation trophies and trying to create an environment where no one is smarter, or stronger or better at anything than you. None of which is true. Someone is always going to be better than you at something or other. Bullies will always exist but unless it descends to physical violence it’s better to teach your children to cope with others and their bad attitudes or to come to their own dynamic at getting along with one another. Stress and anxiety are on the rise because none of these children have any coping skills at all. Judy Blume and Ronald Dahl are not acceptable, even Dr Seuss has been scrubbed of some of his stories but leftists are appalled because graphic depictions of gay sex are not acceptable to parents. This La La La, unicorns and rainbows suggestion that you can mandate that children just be nice is ridiculous, like so much else that goes on in the steps of childhood development it’s practice for adult life. Children need those coping skills developed in childhood to become adults who can also cope with adult challenges.
Bullying is abnormal behavior. Otherwise everybody would do it. Fine, teach kids to deal with adversity, but abuse is still abuse and there should be zero tolerance for it in schools. Constant exposure to it can be very destructive to a child's self-image.

I was called spotty and fatty at school. Didn’t do me any harm. I just laughed and moved on, or gave as good as I got. This is another part of British culture that is being erased… the ability to self deprecate and laugh at and with each other.
I had shingles on my face at the age of 15 (yeah the doctors were confused too) and it left notable scars on my forehead. Kids in school nicknamed me “Dents” because the pits in my face were obvious. And guess what? It made me LESS self conscious about it because it was acknowledged, talked about, and accepted as part of who and what I am. This modern wave of “sensitivity” is simply teaching kids to HIDE what they are and to be ashamed of it.

SO SO true. Adults need to have certain strengths, we all want to protect our children and indeed it is our duty but not in this way!
Imagine getting offended by a fictional character’s name. At this rate, the future will be full of sensitive kids thinking they are a non-binary cat/alien/penguin, believing the world is centred around them, full of rainbows, unicorns, and positivity. Protecting kids is a good mean, but not the best for their education. We should be teaching them how to stand up for and defend themselves, not hide or disguise the malices in our world from them.

It’s one thing to get my head around this censorship of children books.
It’s another thing completely when you realise what they’re replacing these books with in the library’s is worse that anyone could ever have predicted.
The simple question no one is asking is "what is so wrong with the adults who grew up watching the classic cartoons?"

I used to get bullied in elementary and the first 3 years of high school. Took me years to get over the insecurities it caused, and even now it has an impact on me in certain situations. However, I also learned how to prevent getting in situations where I would get bullied. The problem with child bullying is, that kids are forced to go to school and cannot extract themselves from the situation. As an adult, I don't interact with bullies anymore, but as a kid I was forced to see them every day. It's a hard problem to solve. But just because I was called "chicken legs" on account of being very skinny, I don't think that we should ban chicken legs just because I was bullied with that term (and others of course)!
Changes like these are not gonna stop bullying. The only thing that ever helped me against being bullied as a child was when in third year my mentor found out and the bullies were called into the principal office and explained in no uncertain terms that they would be expelled if they continued harassing me like that. The idea that they will not learn the words to bully their victims if you rewrite a few books and series is laughable!

Im 34 born in 1989 and honestly never knew what the word anxiety meant until around 2018 when i googled it.
One thing they seem to forget is that it's not the words themselves but in which context and reasoning they are used that matter. This is what needs to be tackled, not words. There is more and more miscommunication because of the focus on single words that the bigger context and message is lost.

Keep kids away from the TV, computers, mobile phones and loads of unhealthy food: only a few hours a week. And let them go to dancing and music lessons, sports, and so on. People seem so fragile nowadays. I grew up in an all-boys college, and we used to joke and call each other names all the time. Now, as adults, I'm still friends with most of my former classmates, and they are well-adjusted individuals. I'm not in favor of bullying, but you can usually tell when people are just teasing and not being genuinely mean. Additionally, standing up for yourself is an important trait. Being a victim and feeling fearful is terrible, and it seems like the mainstream media wants this generation to embrace those qualities. It's no wonder that when someone like Andrew Tate speaks, he is vilified by the mainstream media.

Growing up in the 40s and 50,s ' we fought, played, dealt with bullies and thought for ourselves . We didnt have tv but we had radio and books and expanded our imaginations without tv, internet and mobiles pushing their agenda. We played OUTSIDE' on our bikes if we had one and if we didn’t we got a 'backie' from a friend. We often took ' pieces and jam or butter' with us and ate with dirty hands and peed behind a tree! If we were lucky we found a big house and garden and scared ourselves silly 'plundering their apple tree. While we weren't exactly terrified of our local 'bobby' we had a good respect for him and if he gave you a 'clout round the ear' for minor lawbreaking, we didn’t go crying to our parents because we would probably get another 'clout' from them. We fell , we got up….we broke our bones and got them plastered and didn’t worry about illness. The saying was, 'a bit of dirt never harmed you' but nowadays kids are so 'superclean' they cant build up
their resistance to common ailments. They have.days off school because they have a runny nose, they are stressed, they didn’t sleep last night (probably because they were on the internet/playstation etc. till 2am)!.. I'm not saying the old days were the best but i do think we were happier( if dirtier!) kids than they are today. Childhood is rushed past them, they dont have time to be kids before the worries of our world are on their shoulders. Do gooders should back off, let their kids 'get the belt' if naughty at school and parents give them a slap if they don't behave or this country, if it hasnt already will turn into a world where big brother/ young kids rule the roost. I'm with Piers on this 1, the world is Brutal out there and kids need to be prepared without added anxiety that's fed to them by social media. Ideally kids need much safer spaces on line that don't get infiltrated by the wrong kind of people.
The weight issue is simple and not really comparable to a certain degree. Neither being too skinny or fat is good for you but it is exponentially easier to gain weight than it is to lose it.
As a kid, I was nicknamed "Caveman!" I'm a girl, & I'm 65, & also lived thru unrealistic Sports Illustrated magazine! I hate to disappoint these people, 🤷🏼♀️ but I lived, & I thrived, & everyone I know did too! 💁🏻♀️ Get over it! This is ridiculous Curly & Blondie! 😆

The very one thing we have as human beings is the ability to laugh. It's been with us for centuries if not millennia. I raised my daughter on Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl. Why? Because we could laugh at the insanity of humanity. Dr Seuss and his 'Bread and Butter Battle Book' was beyond superb. We could laugh at the stupid things people pick fights over. Let alone the sheer wisdom of defining the Cold War in silly stupid rhyme. And Roald Dahl. His books were and are literally defined to make children think. Oh, and adults too, when one considers Uncle Oswald. Perfect return topic, dear Mr. Morgan. Back on track, I see :).
Never read Dr Seuss, but still have some of my Roald Dahl books, also Enid Blyton, some editions are older then i am
I was 5'2" and 95lbs when I graduated from high school. I was initially bullied the minute I entered middle school. Rather than sit around and whine about it, I went to my gym teachers and administrators and organized the first TKD club after school. And yes I still got my butt kicked a number or times, but after a while I had the respect of my fellow students and had developed friendships I would not have had if I did not stand up for myself. I now hold 3 black belts in several martial arts and no I dont do MMA, but I am confident in what I do and who I am and I have being assertive to thank in being a better person.
My sons have friends with nicknames. Dotty has freckles, and Poodle has curly hair. Those boys never had a problem, and now they're men in their 30's and still use those names.
Well said, Piers!! They are ruining children's lives these days. My oldest son has five kids and he said if they keep changing the good old cartoons there won't be anything for his kids to watch. If the kids cant learn how to handle adversity as kids they will be a basket case. Paula you might as well put them in an institution. I and my son does! Why dont y'all fix your own kids and leave mine alone. I have 3 sons listening and shaking their heads. They are very glad Paula isn't around them. She wants a complacent bored out of their mind kids. If kids dont learn how to work through controversy while kids their adult like is going to be really rough. Maybe just maybe Paula you are wrong.

I totally agreed with Piers.... This is overprotection to the children, now a days young children cannot overcome any difficulty because of overprotection.
Absolutely ridiculous! Kids in school have not and will not ever stop taking the piss out of other kids. If you’re even slightly overweight you’ll be called fatty. If you have acne it’s guaranteed someone will point out your spots. Maybe these cartoons can help kids not feel so isolated and if they’re called names it might not feel so bad if they’ve not been wrapped in cotton wool. The worlds gone mental 😱

Anyone who thinks words hurt as much as physical violence has clearly never been punched before. Probably because they live in their own little world and have been overly sheltered their entire lives, and now that they're adults they don't know how to handle any kind of negativity or adversity. Being that weak isn't something to be proud of.
The first time I went to a child’s bday party and gifts were also brought for the little sister because if not, she would be offended and hurt!! No!! The little sister should have been taught that today was her sister’s special day and she would have her special day too and maybe a small “present” should be given to the little sister but also to the others as a favor…but not a separate gift because the other children would be offended!! They need to start being taught respect for others from when they are young or they will never learn and always feel that they are the center of the universe and deserve to be recognized for it!!
