"Mark Zuckerberg is worth over $100 billion. What does the world’s sixth-richest person do with all that money, besides lighting lots of it on fire to try to bring a Ready Player One-style metaverse to life? Apparently, he builds a sprawling mansion complex with a massive underground bunker that sounds like a cross between BioShock and Fallout.
That’s according to Wired, which recently published an investigation into the grandiose construction plans, local politics, and swirl of NDAs and secrecy underpinning the Meta founder and CEO’s “home” on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The magazine describes a 1,400-acre compound with two mansions whose combined footprint is roughly the size of a football field. A network of 11 disc-shaped treehouses is planned nearby, while a separate facility will house a gym, pool, tennis court, and other luxuries."

The professor needs to spend a bit more time living rather than just speculating. Most of these bunkers have sustainable food systems and sustainable water systems. Rich people have factories that makes tinned food. But they don't eat it. Obviously the professor does. I don't have anything positive to say about billionnaire with bunkers. But the idiocy academics speak from time to time is overwhelming.

The problem with bunkers is not that you keep the others out, but that the same others never let you out again. So the rich don't build themselves a luxury shelter but a luxury mausoleum where they wait for their end like a caged animal. Guys with guns will just take their bunkers. Paid security, cops, and military won't defend them when money won't buy food and people know they have some. He didn’t buy this ranch, he stole it from the indigenous people of Hawaii. How did he do that? by finding the native Hawaiian descendants living in the United States in many cases in poverty, and paying them off to transfer their rights - their historical family rights to him. This is a truly awful person whose guilt drove him to build this abomination.
Also can we agree that Hawaii is a terrible place for a doomsday bunker? As lovely as the place is right now, it's very dangerous terrain in an apocalyptic scenario: active volcanoes could cause earthquakes, as islands, they are exposed to tsunamis and hurricanes, if the water levels raise too much they'd end up underwater, resources are limited, and you're stuck in the middle of the ocean with no real backup plan if things go south. Not to mention the lingering radiation polluting the islands thanks to the US testing weapons there in the 40's and 60's. Seems ill advised, even for a bad idea as a bunker for rich people to wait out the end of the world.

I stayed in a luxury bunker once. It was a converted Titan II command center. It was a cool experience. One night was fun but weeks, months, or years I'd go crazy.

A yacht is used at least a few day out of the year and can be charted out when not in use. Bunkers are often never even used. One would get more use out of a vacation home. Some do live on their yachts. $270 million for a bunker that will likely never be used. The Waltons have a $188 million bunker. Too bad they aren't used as housing for the homeless. This is why we need higher taxes for the rich!

It will be a failed experiment, and it is amazing how these smart rich guys do not see it. Those shelters will be operated and maintained by regular people who have regular families. Their loyalties will be primarily to their families, not the rich guy. The people in the shelter will be motivated to save their family members who also want to save other people. It will be a mess of emotions.
Also, if there ever is a doomsday situation, the most valuable people in those shelters will be the grunt workers with the technical know-how (plumbers, electrical engineers, farmers, garbage collectors, architects, mechanical engineers, medical doctors, etc.). They will be necessary for fixing the septic tank, removing garbage, fixing plumbing, repairing roof leaks, clearing out mold, burying dead bodies, providing medical care, cleaning the water, etc. This ain’t a cartoon fantasy.
The rich people with the least amount of technical know-how and taking selfies will be the least valuable (Zuckerberg’s family). At some point, there will be a realization that the rich people are not much use and are wasting precious resources. They will then be in danger of being deleted in their bunker they setup for survival, the pinnacle of irony.

1 of my favorite tv shows is The CW's The 100 & without spoiling anything specific for those who never saw it, 1 major aspect of the show was that a century after a nuclear apocalypse wiped out 99% of the world's population, the descendants of those who survived in various bunkers either in space or underground fight over the resources that are left on the surface.
