Me an American who was confused
The what?
I don't know what that is either, South African. I know of parking lights, headlights, and highbeams or brights. When parked on the road in the dark is what the parking lights are for. When visibility is reduced in any fashion while driving be it rain or fog or even overcast weather I just put my headlights on cos what the hell, and to be honest I don't really know what is going on in the rear now that I think about it. I just manage the front, the rear... it handles itself :)

The top open wheel circuit drivers, is the most accurate description. I doubt Hamilton could beat Tom Kristensen at Le Mans, or Jamie Whincup in Supercars, or Jimmy Johnson in NASCAR. That’s not to say these other drivers are any better or worse, just a different skill set for different types of cars.
Btw, excluding Russell’s Mercedes points, Latifi actually beat him last year.

This is an excellent summary of all the contradictory explanations I’ve seen online:
- Brake lights would distract the drivers.
- These are the best drivers in the world so they don’t need them.
- They wouldn’t be able to react in time anyways.
On the other hand, the blinking energy harvesting lights:
- Don’t distract the drivers.
- Are quite useful, despite the fact that reaction time is increased due to the blinking interval.
Just sayin...
They aren't contradictory, just different topics:
"Brake lights would distract the drivers. "
Because at every corner you'd see several of them flashing on and off, not a big issue, but it's unnecessary data.
"These are the best drivers in the world so they don’t need them."
You need them on the street because you don't know what the dumbass ahead will do and a mistake in either party can cause a crash. F1 pilots are actively playing mind games on each other, so these are not comparable at all.
"They wouldn’t be able to react in time anyways."
In the case of a crash or emergency, a driver who couldn't reach to it in time won't react to braking lights. On the street, if someone brakes for something unexpected, you're expected to keep a minimum distance exactly to be able to react and brake. F1 pilots will literally tail each other. Either you are in a position where you can react without the rear lights, or you're fucked.
"Don’t distract the drivers."
They are used in specific cases and not every corner.
"Are quite useful, despite the fact that reaction time is increased due to the blinking interval."
They hardly ever have to react to them in split second decisions, rather it's a signaling tool meant to show the car won't be accelerating as usual or to help out with heavy weather.
@@ggwp638BC Still though way are the "best drivers in the world" wanting less info then a fighter pilot? Which do massive pile ups not happen in F1? Like seeing cars suddenly stop a turn away is not useful or something? Like Fighter pilots can reacact to dodge missle coming at them beyond the speed of sound and dogfight tens of feet above the ground with out crashing while going faster then an F1 car... Why can't F1 drivers react to an incoming crash like plebian Nascar drivers do all the time? It really seems like F1 governing body is in a bubble.
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough Because planes are not cars? A plane, especially fighter jets, can fly in almost any direction with no risk to crashing into anything except the ground and other planes. That gives them a lot of space to make movements that they need without worrying about crashing. And while fighter pilots have a lot of information, they only have the info they need to survive, not just a bunch of unnecessary data.
Cars on the other hand, have only 4 points of control which are the tires when they are on the ground. If you brake too late, the tires will lose traction and you’ll go speeding straight into a car like Hamilton did in Saudi Arabia. You could end up with under steer or oversteer and lose control of the car. And to your point of NASCAR, they aren’t expected to be able to avoid a crash and in many instances they don’t. But due to their design, they have clever bits of engineering that help the car survive an impact and avoid flipping or getting crumbled into a giant flaming ball of aluminum. F1 cars are not designed that way; they are designed for different scenarios and dangers that jet fighters and NASCAR drivers don’t face.
TL;DR:
✈️ ≠ 🚗
NASCAR 🚗≠ 🏎
Hotel = Trivago

Could the brake lights also be abused by drivers? Let's say coming into a corner you have a driver right on your tail, you could depress the brake pedal very slightly (only enough to cause the brake lights to come on, not enough to slow you down ) *before* the normal braking point, causing the driver behind to brake early.
I actually didn't knew all those years that the flashing rear lights meant saving energy, that's brilliant, before the 2010's it was only used in raining sessions only if I remember correctly, very helpful video, thanks!
Nice video, great job! :)
1:13 - Was that the 2021 Ferrari sneak peek!
1:13 Man the new Williams livery looks interesting.
Williams? Haas is the new williams now lmao
Don't know if it applies to F1 but I do remember when racing stock cars one of the tricks was to step on the brake pedal without actuating the brakes to make the driver in the car behind brake for real on instinct when seeing the red light turning on. Similar to brake-testing I suppose but far more effective due to a shinning red light suddenly turning on.
On a side note - since we are talking about lights - similar thing happened to the green light at the start of the races.
Once a driver realised he could start ahead if he would hit the accelerator when the red light went off instead of waiting for the green light to turn on the green light became useless and was eventually discarded.

When I started watching F1 I always saw those lights blinking and thought that they worked like hazard lights. Not too far off I guess...
I think it helps the drivers stay aware of their surroundings while racing plus there is a braking point which is an indication of when is the driver in front is going to brake

breaking points change throughout the race. It depends on tyre quality, rubbering of the track as well as many other factors. It takes many corners and even laps to plan a pass in an F1 car and brake lights do not help with this plan. The driver behind already knows where the driver in front is going to brake because he has been planing his pass for so long.
2:53 Fun fact: the vast majority of Americans don’t know what these are because they aren’t installed on most American vehicles
There’s not really a point to them as when we turn on our headlights, the tail lights turn on but are dimmer than when you apply the brakes so there’s no confusion. Also the third brake light doesn’t light up until you press the brakes. Basically makes them redundant.
@@Ccs4646 the rear fog light actually has the intensity of a brake light, so in foggy condition it's a safety feature. Saves you from idiots blasting over roads without proper sight.
@@Ccs4646 not the same, the rear fog light is brighter than the rest of the tail lights.

I always wanted to know that, especially since WEC does have braking lights. But I guess due to them having 4 different classes they actually are useful, as braking zones do vary
That williams car really looked like a tractor

Here I was thinking it was all about weight reduction.
then they should also remove all paint and decals, oh and cut one leg off. Imagine the time they would gain
Maybe it was originally, but there is a minimum mass requirement, so the difference would be minimal as they would just add the additional mass lower down.
