- As a CHRISTmas gift this year, I decided to build a couple of cooler boxes for my son and son-in-law. I got the idea from Donald LeBlanc, here's a link to his video:

I thought about doing a build video but didn't think I could do a better job than he did, so I decided to do a project run down. In this video, I discuss where I got all the parts and the total cost of the build. I am hoping this video will be a good complement to Donald's build video.

They were pretty easy to make and are getting a lot of use this summer. Both my son and son-in-law grill out all the time. I was really surprised when I gave them at Christmas, I wasn't sure what their reactions were going to be. I was pleasantly surprised when they loved them so much.

Great, thank you. The can you held up in the video is "Cedar Natural Tone" I also probably put it on too thick.
Whoops, your right, the Cherry was from my corn hole boards. I used Cedar Natural on the Cooler Box. I grabbed the wrong can of the bench.

These boxes are very easy to build and my boys went crazy for them. My son-in-law wants me to skirt his grill to match. If it goes well, I may post a video of that. Thanks for the comment.

CHRISTmas was difficult this year but overall, I think the kids had a good holiday. I'll have to tell you about it some time when we both have a minute. Thank you for the comment on my cooler boxes, they were fun and very easy to make.

The cooler boxes were fun to make. The worst part was sourcing the parts. My son-in-law wants me to skirt his grill to match the box. that will be a fun spring project.

Benjamin Ledford I'll be sure to film it. I'm waiting for my son-in-law to buy the wood and bring the grill to the shop. I think it should be pretty easy just build a frame around the legs and add the slats. He wants two doors in the front and a shelf underneath.

Got it thank you. I just need to apply a much thinner coat next time. Oh well, I may add some polyurethane to give it a nice shine once the stain is dry.
I wish you the best of luck. The box will fade over time due to the weather and may look better in the long run with the heavier coat of stain.

Awesome job!!! I started to pick up the materials to build my own. Regarding the extra bracing to accommodate for the weight of the filled cooler, any chance of posting a picture to see what it looks like?

I gave both of the cooler boxes I made as gifts so unfortunately I don't have any photos. What I did was build a frame around the bottom of the box. Since the cooler is tapered, there was no interference. I glued and screwed the frame to the sides and bottom of the box. Once I did that, I could put a cooler full of ice in the box and there was no sag at all.

Since this is not the first time I have been asked this question, I went out into the shop last night and shot a couple minutes of video detailing the cut list and a second question regarding beefing up the box to be sure it holds the weight of a loaded cooler. Look for that video to be posted later today.

I am wanting to do this for my son and sons in law for Father's Day....I don't have many power tools...A power drill and electric sander and everything else is all manual. Any suggestions that might make it easier WITH what I have?
+Kenneth Parks You could leave it rough, rustic is in. That would cut down on time for sanding. The boards are all cedar and they cut very easily with a hand saw. Use good wood glue and a box is screws and you could easily make this cooler box.

A lot of great information here ! Only thing I am concerned about is the weight of ice and bottles in the cooler -- is the bottom strong enough that the bottom won't fail over time ? Perhaps a 1" cleat around the inside for the bottom pieces to ride on / screwed to would be in order ? What do you think ?
Excellent point! This is something I should have address in the video but didn't. I made a slight modification to the plan.
I ripped an AC2 2X4 down to roughly 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" and built a frame around the inside of the cooler box. I used Tight bond and glued it to the side panels and the bottom slats. I added screws from the inside for the side panels and up through the bottom for the slats. I felt that would give more support to the weight of the cooler and it's contents. Since the cooler tapers at the bottom this did not interfere with it's fit.
The slats run from front to back on the bottom of the cooler box. In order for the cooler to sit at the proper height I had to build a grid to raise the cooler. I had to add a set of slats on top of those that run from side to side and four more slats on top of those running from front to back, this raised the cooler approximately one inch inside the box so that it set at the proper height to mate with the top. I used left over pieces of the Cedar slats that weren't nice enough to be visible. Those slats were screwed to the bottom slats and sit inside the frame.

Hello, how many coats of that stain did you use. I used the same stain and I must have applied it too thick because mine came out much darker than your boxes.

I really like them. Great idea. Can you tell me why the cooler and lid are not center and on lid there is a spacer on the right side and not on the left?
I needed a little extra room in the box to remove and install the cooler so the box is a bit wider than the cooler.
When I installed the spigot i cut the pipe short and it pulled the cooler off to one side. It can easily be fixed with a piece of pipe a few inches longer. Bad planning on my part.

I don’t make them so sell anymore. There pretty simple and could be made made with a Skill saw. You could try it yourself or post the video link on one of the socials like FB or IG asking if there is anyone in your area that does woodworking and what they would charge you To make one of these cooler boxes.

+HennessyLane1 That's a good question, I knew I had a couple bad cuts and probably didn't remove those boards from the total. I also did some reinforcement in the bottom of the box.
I will be doing a follow up build video where I will make the box from start to finish and will be able to give a more accurate board total.

Should ha e usedpallet wood you would have saved $30.00 per chest.
The Cedar wasn't all that expensive, it was the hinges and bottle opener that really jacked up the cost. Pallet wood would make a really nice cooler box.

Actually Christ has nothing to do with christmas. The Christians stamped their religion over the pre christian Pegan celebration of winter solstice and and Saturnalia, a festival dedicated to the Roman deity Saturn, In an effort to convert their followers to Christianity. Based on biblical narratives some theologians believe the man jesus would have most likely been born in spring due to "shepards watching over their flock" would have taken place in spring time.
