  • My son and I built an Ice Chest Cooler Box to be auctioned off at the end of the month at his Boy Scout spaghetti dinner. This is a complete build showing every step needed to build the box. (just really, really fast)

It's fun. As he gets older his attention span is getting slightly longer so we can start working on the bigger projects. I started him on small projects when he was 5 and he is now 11.

Nicely done. The music at the beginning and end of the video of watching the old Charlie Chaplin movies. And yes I'm that old. Thanks for sharing.

I watched your video and I am very impressed that your son can build this. Your description says the cooler box plans are free but when I went to the website the project is $10.00. Please advise...am I missing something?

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I have fixed the wording in the description.

What size are the fence pickets you are using in your build? They look much thicker than the cedar fence pickets at my local big box stores. Great build by the way.

They are the standard fence pickets from Home Depot. 5 1/2" x 72" x 5/8". I try to let them dry out for at least a week before I start cutting them.

Do you find that staples and glue are strong enough? When I watched your original build you were using dry wall screws. I wondered myself if glue and staples/brads would be strong enough.

The screws are only there to hold the pieces together while the glue dries. The glue is where the strength comes from. I have made about half a dozen with the staples over the past couple of years and nobody has reported any problems with them so far. I have mainly made them just for friends and family as gifts.

Thanks for the reply. Once I finish making Xmas gifts, I hope to make this in Jan. I'll be purchasing your plans for sure when I get th e time to make these.

+John Walsh They are already on the list. I gave them 3 different designs and they just need to pick one. I am also making some for another local troop where his old Cub Scout den leader went to.

WoW your son has shot up since i last saw him in a video. Great build love it. I'm sure you built one similar to this years ago when you first started, i could be wrong though ha ha ha. By the way were you using normal brad nails and what size? i have the same nailer and i love mine. Well Done on the Build.
SIDE NOTE - i cant get the PDF for this cooler as it says at checkout, that it doesn't deliver outside of the US? It's a PDF download and it's free??

+Barry Roberts Thanks a lot. We were using 1" staples. I'm still figuring this new commerce system out. Please try it again when you get a chance.
