One thing I've noticed people miss about the final battle is that they say they could use the F-35 but neglect the fact that the area the uranium plant is located in negates the use of GPS and therefore makes the 35 almost useless, forcing them to use the F/A-18
Yeah I missed that detail to upon 1st viewing, I think it's a stupid explanation but then we wouldn't have a movie now would we. I actually thought the f18 was chosen cause it's more adapted for these missions compared to the sensitive electronics of the raptor and lightning
This exact detail, however spurious in technical accuracy, is still what made the movie great for me. So many other directors/producers would have just ignored the existence of the F35 and artificed a world where the aggressor nation has superior fighters in general, which in turn wouldn't have made much sense. The audience were asked to suspend belief a little but, crucially, not insultingly so.
Cyclone was caught in between two positions. One is that he adheres to the US Navy in terms of having set standards and pilots doing their job properly which Maverick did not with the test pilot program. Admiral Kazansky on the other hand is the superior of Cyclone and Cyclone is doing his boss a favor by accepting Maverick in a final role with the Navy when he should have been released. Hence Cyclone had put the point very clear across to Maverick that he was willing to obey the orders of Iceman who is now debilitated from terminal illness but yet spell out the seriousness of Maverick's situation that he is on his last legs of his career if he doesn't understand that he is now in a privileged position to continue flying.
Iceman outranks Cyclone. His “suggestion “ of Maverick may not have been an official order, but carried the weight of one…especially given Maverick’s actual combat experience.
As a Marine.... Imagine if your battle buddy is.... COMMANDER US NAVAL PACIFIC FLEET.. 2 People on planet Earth outrank him, The Chairman of the joint chief of staff, And the President.
What I actually find funny is Maverick got the same seniority as the Admirals. He is the same age as they and same skill level (maybe even better) and he got offer to be an Admiral many times. But, he turned down the Admiral position, because he like to fly and don't like to deal with politicians. But, the catch is that, now everybody else is his boss.
I wonder how Tom Cruise felt about his Maverick character before and how he feels about that same character now, knowing that that character is responsible for one of the greatest movies ever made. Yeah, I know people are going to start throwing epic movies like Gone With the Wind and The Godfather, etc but honestly, at least to me, those movies are nowhere near as entertaining as Top Gun: Maverick.
Tom Cruise and his bestie Chris McQuarrie were heavily involved in writing the script and developing the characters but I think even Tom underestimated how iconic his character Maverick is… I’m sure even he was shocked the movie hit $1.4 Billion
Maverick should've flown the Darkstar ahead of the strike team so he'll race with all the missiles at whatever mach speed is needed. Then the strike team can bomb the target with less danger.
I kinda love how cyclone starts out not seeing what iceman or others see in mav, or even how good he was or his humbleness (regardless of which was better mav corrected him that he placed second behind iceman). Yet as the movie goes on you see cyclone begin to see not just the skills that mav has an how iceman saw him, but also that under that cocky surface is a man that worries about his team an other people.
They have the cost of an entire country's economy value in that defense; "challenging" is one way to explain this mission, yeah.....I can agree with that.
Ya know...I saw this movie in the theater. Hell of a lot better then I thought it would be! 😃😃😃😃. The thought just hit me...this plan to take out the "unsanctioned " nuclear reactor which just happens to be under ground and can only be destroyed by precise hits with missiles is pretty damn close to The Star Wars movie with the rebels X Wings attacking & destroying The Death Star!😃😯
I was gonna say it's almost exactly that one mission in Ace Combat 6 where you have to fly through a canyon to take out a nuclear weapon and then quickly escape XD
It’s NEVER explained why Maverick is so hated among some of these top officers in the Navy. It’d be nice to have that back story because as valuable a pilot as he is, he gets ZERO respect.
@@Privatepain1234 Air Force here. Without getting too technical, GPS jamming is enough to throw off any radar guided missiles. A blanket of it at this magnitude in the movie at that type of terrain is even more challenging. Laser guiding is the only way. USAF 2W1 here who worked on F-22s and for a bit on F-35s (but primarily F-16s and F-22s). The argument isn't that F-35s can't fly in GPS null zones. They absolutely can, but the GPS guided weapons cannot. This is why they're utilizing laser guided. Now, from the video, it appears they're using GBU-10s which are a 2000 pound variety. Laser guided too which is typically for moving targets whereas GPS is for stationary but Laser can hit stationary too. Here's the kicker. The F-35 can hold 2x GBU-10s on the external pylons. You just have to install the pylon, update the CCG and configure the SMS page. The only downside is it increases the radar signature, but it's still less than an F-18 which is a school bus on most sequence systems. The F-35 could absolutely be used but it wasn't because they needed an underdog. Also, there's still little known publicly about the full function and capabilities of the F-35. In the movie, it would have to be reduced considerably and would also require MUCH more oversight. Add to that, getting F-18s for trainers for a movie and flights to include inside the cockpit is much easier with an old F-18 than an F-35. The main reason though and this was told to me by a friend who worked as liaison for this movie back in 2017. There is no 2 seater F-35. All the camera work in flight is with the actors in the back seat with the actual navy pilot flying. F-18s have 1 or 2 seats. E or F classification. Like the F-16 with C vs D. They used the F-18F's for this movie with inside cockpit shots and the E model for actual exterior shots so we only see the 1 seat canopy.

In the original movie Maverick was a Lieutenant. Naval officer ranks are different than all of the the other branches. O-1 through O-4 are junior officers: ensign, lieutenant (junior grade), lieutenant (this was Maverick's rank), and lieutenant commander. O-5 and O-6 are senior officers: commander and captain. O-7 through O-10 are flag officers: rear admiral (lower half) (one star), rear admiral (two stars), vice admiral (three stars), and admiral (four stars). A Lieutenant in the Navy is equal to a Captain in the Army, Air Force, or Marines. Now he is a Captain (O-6) which would be a Colonel in the Army, Air Force, or Marines.

Yeah I missed that detail to upon 1st viewing, I think it's a stupid explanation but then we wouldn't have a movie now would we.
I actually thought the f18 was chosen cause it's more adapted for these missions compared to the sensitive electronics of the raptor and lightning
I wouldn’t say it’s useless. The use of gps is useless. Its stealth capabilities would’ve helped alot
Maverick finished second ?
Man.... i thought he just acquired enough points to graduate...
he was tactfully telling the admiral he doesn’t care what he thinks
Well Cyclone ....if you think your Mr. Righteous..why don't you get your ass in that plane and do the job yourself !!!!! Love Maverick!
"I only hope that when the data's analyzed, a weakness can be found."
As much as it pains by the book people, people like Maverick are the people who wrote the book.
As a Marine....
Imagine if your battle buddy is....
COMMANDER US NAVAL PACIFIC FLEET..
2 People on planet Earth outrank him,
The Chairman of the joint chief of staff,
And the President.
I find it funny how Warlock was just coming off of another military production the last ship and then he got the role for top gun maverick
Also Warlock will be in next Mission Impossible movie coming out in 2023.
Great actor
Invitation. They called orders 😂
Love this movie!
That's s all it takes
This movie would not have been what it was without Warlock!
2:39 *I'da been like, HELL YEAH, M.....F....R!!!! and Mr 3 Star Admiral woulda been like*
Maverick should've flown the Darkstar ahead of the strike team so he'll race with all the missiles at whatever mach speed is needed. Then the strike team can bomb the target with less danger.
That would have been a fun scene to watch
Well, that certainly is a weird little Tom Cruise montage at the end.
Oh I didn't even realize the Gunship Mav was evading is foreshadowed here 😲
I kinda love how cyclone starts out not seeing what iceman or others see in mav, or even how good he was or his humbleness (regardless of which was better mav corrected him that he placed second behind iceman). Yet as the movie goes on you see cyclone begin to see not just the skills that mav has an how iceman saw him, but also that under that cocky surface is a man that worries about his team an other people.
The Navy is rank-centric, instead of capabilities-centric like the Army. The last time the navy (save SEALS) did anything substantial was WWII.
They have the cost of an entire country's economy value in that defense; "challenging" is one way to explain this mission, yeah.....I can agree with that.
my 70 year old dad flew with them for 25 years and immediately called that dude a prick when he saw this movie
Jon Hamm is the reason I still use a Kodak Carousel. If you know you know.
Best five min of television in years. It's a time machine.
Which in turn was based on the movie 633 Squadron, which in turn was inspired by the Dam Busters mission...
I was gonna say it's almost exactly that one mission in Ace Combat 6 where you have to fly through a canyon to take out a nuclear weapon and then quickly escape XD
It’s NEVER explained why Maverick is so hated among some of these top officers in the Navy.
It’d be nice to have that back story because as valuable a pilot as he is, he gets ZERO respect.
should of just called the air force and send in a B-2...
Or just deploy a nuclear strike.
Or you could send a missile from a submarine .
@@abhishek9510 GPS jammed. (Whatever the fuck that is supposed to imply) so no fire and forget cruise missiles
Or could have sent Biden to kiss the enemy’s butt.
@@Privatepain1234 Air Force here. Without getting too technical, GPS jamming is enough to throw off any radar guided missiles. A blanket of it at this magnitude in the movie at that type of terrain is even more challenging. Laser guiding is the only way. When I first saw this movie, I thought to my self that the defense grid of the target is overkill. But then again, it's not impossible to have such defense.
Imagine how awkward it was being facing the high rank that was below you when he finish his school back in 88 and you already way above him in experience.
I like Jon Hamm l wish l could meet him in San Diego
As I watch them scroll through the slides all I can think is ‘why is there a cutscene from red alert in the film?’ 😂
I bet Bradley Bradshaw’s best friend is Thomas Thompson. Lol seriously that’s the best they could do with names?
I used to know a guy named Douglas Douglas.
Very nice movie people were clapping while watching the movie even if You have to seen part 1
1:10 저 F-14 톰캣은 유일하게 한대만 남아 매버릭 과 루스터가 슬쩍하여 Su-57 두대를 격추하게 된다고...
I just kept waiting and waiting....and wait for Mav to tell Admiral Beau something like this "Well fuck this shit, I don't have to sit here and take this bullshit from you when I can get out the Navy with my 30 year retirement pension, file for VA claims for another pension and get a chill ass job with the commercial airlines making AT least double from what the Navy pays me! You think you can fuck with my discharge? Go ahead and try, all I have to do is send one text message to one guy (Ice) and I am UNTOUCHABLE!" *Moonwalks out of conference room* Movie is all over
That would be nice for a TG Maverick parody LOL
Moonwalks 😂😂😂
Hey look there’s the explanation for the lack of F-35
Too top secret u Russian spy lmao
@@janus3555 Aaahh ... I love when, all of a sudden, someone with an actual qualification shows up and just flattens out all speculation. Good job, sir. And thank you for your service! I heard the hosts & guests of Fighter Pilot Podcast, as well as on the F-14 Tomcast, discuss the issue of airframe choice for the movie and thought it was fascinating - while also being quite simple ("we just don't have any other two-seaters available!") 🙂
@@janus3555 Thanks for the explanation! The casual dismissal of the F-35 felt a bit suspicious but I get why they couldn’t use her for the movie. It was nice to see the F-18 shine and I absolutely loved their last hurrah to the amazing Tomcat 🥲
@@janus3555 or the real reason is the US Navy is afraid of using the F35C against the better Su-57's which is all weather, air superiority, supercruise and highly manoveruble fighter but we all know we can't have the Su-57 shooting down a failed multi billion plane which has taken up much taxpayer money.
This mission briefing screams more _Mission: Impossible_ than _Top Gun._
Its GPS jamed so you cannot target the missile sites from the air like the base run way was in the movie.
so fine
why cut out "just wanna manage expectations, sir"?
I need to see an offshoot featuring Cyclone and Warlock
I dont understand all of the hate for Maverick in this movie. Just because he doesnt want to be a cushy admiral. He wants to fly. Everyone hates him for it.
Ah poor admiral can't handle the fact that Maverick is the better than him some air boss he is
I think he’s also jealous because his hero Iceman barely knows he exists while the popular admiral will always go out of his way to protect that bratty troublemaker Maverick.
You can see he’s pi$$ed 😛
Right lol
What he has to offer is he's the best pilot top gun has ever seen so just maybe he can teach some of that
His cocky and attitude is what Cyclone disliked not his capability.
Nice way to trigger a WAR...ahhh just a movie
Moments of Maverick.. MOM..
the attack run is literally star wars. Everything about this movie is stolen plot and cliches. And its still good. Make it make sense
"we don't want you to fly it, we want you to teach it." later proceeds to lead the mission like the air force doesn't care about who takes what positions in formations and anybody's free to do so.
Don Draper is an Admiral!
Cyclone was out of line. Talking about Goose like he didn’t know exactly who he was is a reason to go. I like the character but dude was out of line.
"Rods from GOD" then a convenient dormant fault line slipped story. That should do it.
Enemy in TG1: USSR or a nation supported by the USSR.
Enemy in TG2: Iran.
I don't care who you are, Tom Cruise makes great movies!
Damn, John Hamm is really phoning it in here
It’s funny how the mission is almost the same as the one in Star Wars, when they had to bomb the Death Star
Maverick should have told John Hamm AKA Cyclone and Ed Harris Radm. Chester 'Hammer' Cain to give the mission to their computerized pilots that are supposed to be so good, so he could hang with Penny Benjamin.
"GPS jammed"
Satellites can have lasers.
Besides, it's way bigger than a Womp Rat.
Little did Maverick know that for a brief amount of time, he wasn't the one who was going to come home from the mission.
Or the second option is.....we could send a drone *credits roll*
In organizations people like pushing other people’s buttons till they stop working, don’t they?
I just realized. How that Uranium enrichment facility got leaked could be a movie plot on its own.
Rogue One: Maverick
@@shawnhilleboe8428 - McQuarrie did uncredited revisions on _Rogue One._
Say no to war
There should be one final Top Gun Maverick. He should be a 2 star, Carrier CO or CAG, and he has to go in and get one of his boys/girls (whom was shot down) out from behind enemy lines, and going against the rules/senior admirals, he is forced to retire after saving the pilot and day in violation of the Rules/Admiralty.
That is called Behind Enemy Lines. It was a good movie.
What is GPS jamming?
can't believe Jon Hamm talks to Tom like that, Tom is literally more powerful than him and easily fire him.
My boots are on the ground my wings fly high
Goosster do your rooster
Doesn't it feel like a completely different movie than Top Gun 1?
its not the 80's anymore (sadly) so tone and cinematography have changed but it does feel like a love letter to the original. might even be my fav ever sequel right up there with Aliens!
It always irks me how badly Maverick is treated by his superiors: reminds me of Everett McGill in Heartbreak Ridge disrespecting Clint Eastwood to his face and in the presence of others while Eastwood's character earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.
ohh wow i love the f-14s
Seems a weird way to go about the mission instead of a B-2 or a guided missile or something.
George Lucas should sue for royalties. All they left out was the line about bullseyeing womp rats in a T-16.
633 squadron
Ironic actually
Lucas took a lot of his ideas from western and eastern films. From WWII dogfighting movies to Flash Gordon to Seven Samurai to Cowboy flicks, etc and etc
Nah, Karou Shintani should, the creator of Area 88.
This was nearly identical to the Ravine Raid in the Manga, only with the good guys actually being part of an official military (instead of mercs), and the oil refinery being replaced by a Uranium enrichment facility.

What is Cyclone's problem?
ICEMAN is still the Better Pilot!!
That admiral wasn't pulling punches... All of this while insulting one of the best fighter pilots of all time...
your competence take you only so far, your attitude takes your farther. Maverik has been protected by Iceman, else Navy hates people who disobey orders and direspect chain of command.

Hmm wonder who was Cyclone first choice?
Interesting
In reality they would just tomahawk the crap out of this facility and call it a day.
Wait a minute I thought maverick was a lieutenant because Charlie addressed him as a lieutenant
There is always one CO that doesn’t like the hero
Who was it in the original??
In my opinion, it was Jester, perhaps not more discretely than Cyclone in this film.
