I loved how Phoenix was pretty much the only pilot to give Mav the respect he deserved, and was basically 10% on board with everything he brought to the table from the second he showed up. Just the slight smile she gave when he threw the A-TOPS in the trash screams "Oh I am so going to love this!"
Someone told that in the original Script, She was the Daughter of Cougar. But they changed causse Rooster already being Goose's Soon. If true i think that might explain her attitude toeards Maverick. I think it would been cool The pilot that he saved and rio he lost.
I don't think the others didn't give him the respect. Remember, they were the ones that threw him out of the bar the night before, they probably thought they didn't know how he would react to them. If you look at Hangman's reaction after Maverick says "But the enemy doesn't know your limits" he smiles because he believes he is the best pilot and now he can prove it.

And made ace in the process, a rarity in modern aviators. Between his three kills in the first movie and two here, he hit the 5 needed to earn himself a classification as an ace.

I love how they always diss him for being “just a captain” but in the navy a captain is a 0-6….literally the same level as a Colonel in the army, marines, or airforce. Its literally one step down from a brigadier general/ rear admiral lower half.
Like was said in the movie Maverick should have been an Admiral. Iceman was the same rank as him and he ended being the Admiral in charge of the whole US Navy Pacific Fleet

I love that even though she's not in the movie, the whole introduction of Maverick to the team kind of parallels that of Charlie, even if it's just a little bit. I know she's older now, but I really would've loved to see McGillis back, even just for less than a minute, Meg Ryan too.
It's not just that McGillis is older, she doesn't act anymore and hasn't taken care of herself in the same way as Cruise or Jennifer Connoly. She looks like she's been working at the DMV for 40 years and if she had been cast in the movie, people would have just ridiculed her appearance. There was no good reason to put her through that nonsense for a cameo. Iceman was the one person from the OG movie we needed to see and his part was perfection.
When people see the next scene in the theaters, I'm willing to bet that they along with the Admiral we're questioning why Mav just beat Top Gun. First reason is: Respect. He showed then that everything they could do, he could do a thousand times better and earned their respect for it. Secondly, he showed them, that all they think they know is still not enough and to expect the best of the best from their enemies

The owners manual is nowhere near that large because it still has to fit in the glove compartment. It is the factory manual that you're thinking of. They are usually large like that. I've had them for several of my cars. Yeah, pretty damn big.

Oh the pilots did go to Soviet Union to receive training but some war happened and the instructors had to leave so the pilots came back with the planes and had to basically figure everything all by themselves. They became the best Mig-21 pilots in the world because they learned what the plane was capable of and not what the manual or regulations said it was capable of.

When Charles Parnell/Admiral Bates was first introducting Mavarick with is "exploits are legendary" speech to the class I was simply half-imagining Captain Chandler (The Last Ship) coming up afterwards instead. Parts of the speech was bit of a exaggeration and likely approved by Ice to Bates to give Mav a better chance to train the graduates.
Maverick's point is that the information on their aircraft is easily accessible; Internet, Jane's defence textbooks both resources are available in public libraries or in bookstores. However even if the enemy knows the physical characteristics and what weapon it carries, at the end of the day, the pilot's abilities will decide the outcome of the fight.
"The enemies 5th generation fighter has leveled the playing field" ..... Fun concept in the movie. IRL yeah no. We have had a 5th gen fighter since 1997 and its still unmatched by any other aircraft in the world. Also there is only like 7 or 8 operational SU-57's. As much as I like the movie its the only part i just cant get over. XD
