I just love, love, love how she calls him PETE and humanizes him, and not Maverick, and she doesn't fawn over him like some demi-god Navy aviator as other women/girls would - she shows him in the real world on the ground they are equals, or rather she is the superior "Top Gun" in this situation.

Well if we’re going by real life rules the movie doesn’t happen. No way would 58 year old dude be still flying in the Navy, let alone test pilot. And he would not have survived a Mach 10 ejection, he would have been torn to shreds. So if you’re suspending logic then you gotta do it across the board. I’m in aviation and there plenty of unrealistic aspects of it, but i shrugged and enjoyed it.

Yes that was from the first movie when they were first dating before he met Charlie. From this scene we know that after his eventual split with Charlie him and Penny had an on and off relationship which is when he must've taken her on that joyride in the F-18.
There's something in this scene that just bugs the holy bejeebers out of me. The F/A-18 entered Naval Fleet Service in late 1984. Mitchell could not have been checked out in the Hornet, as he was still learning the Tomcat at that time, and had not accrued enough fleet experience or flight hours to be selected for Fighter Weapons School until 1986. So the only aircraft that he could have taken Penny for a "joyride" in would have had to have been the F-14 Tomcat. It is possible that Mitchell transitioned out of Phantoms into Tomcats some time around 1985, but according to Admiral Cain, Mitchell had "30-plus years of service" at the time of his detachment from the Darkstar program. If the movie was set in 2019 or 2020, as it was originally intended to be, then Mitchell could not have been in the Navy in 1986. The numbers just don't add up. I get that it's only a movie, and that they had to do some wiggling to get around the time between the two films, but if Penny had only said she'd gone in the "joyride" in a Tomcat, it would have been more believable.
I haven't seen the movie yet. But, it's so weird to see him using a cellphone texting I the movie. Why couldn't they stick with just talking in person face to face.and the bartender is she supposed to be the little girl from top who answers the door at his bosses home ?
I'll try to be vague so as to not spoil the movie. There's only one person Maverick texts to in the movie. There's a reason why he texts this person instead of talking to him. You'll find out why during the movie if you pay attention. Great movie. I've seen it 3 times already and will see it again later on today before it leaves the theater
