If anyone is curious, the hand signals the SU-57 pilot was using were actual signals. He first said, "follow me" then he said "330". "Follow me, heading 330" asking Mav to follow him north back to the base he came from, away from the ship which was south of their position. So, they really did think he was a friendly before Maverick started shooting.
@@Tigerman1138 My guess is the following *[Follow me, heading 330]* Maverick throws up a bunch of hand signals which tip off the SU-57 pilot that whoever's in it is not on their side, hence the other pilot moving into position for a killshot.

I love the way they treated the enemy pilots, showing them just as capable as the protagonists. You can even see the first pilot eject right before the missile hits his jet.
it's NOT the plane - it's the pilot. I saw a friend of mine with a Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa was easily beaten by a very skillful guy with his 5xx CC bike. This is what TOP GUN is all about - not the gun by the man behind it
To our Russian brothers and sisters, can we just agree that the portrayal of the Su-57 is so cool and realistic? Damn I love Pugachev's Cobra maneuver.
There is no way in hell that su57 would fly so low and slow .. it has missiles that wont get flared away on such short range and full lock.. after making insane maneuver it cant dodge slower and less maneuverable plane.. do you need more facts on how retarded this is?
For all we know, they weren't. But at the same time they didn't want to make any major statements by showing an American jet shooting down a Russian jet. It's fine if it happens by proxy, but depicting actual fighting between the world's largest nuclear powers just doesn't fly- pun not intended.
@@richelle9563 It's Kvochur's Bell, the Cobra is very much different as the latter only has the plane lose energy by pointing upwards with the help of thrust vectoring.

There is no way he would not have seen Hangman on radar nor not been warned of the incoming missile. I know this ruins the whole he wasn't an idiot thing, he was good, then he was your stereotypical incompetent bad guy when it mattered.
@@Tr3ndSetter All the SU57 pilots were totally made incompetent, very incompetent. If not, 1. after the initial attack, the wingman would have shredded the F14. 2. even when he hit the F14 with several rounds, it did not do any damage, were they firing rubber bullets or what? 3. You cannot sneak yp on any modern fighter, get a missile lock and obliterate it without the pilot getting all sorts of warnings. The scene is very entertaining, great cinematography, awesome angles but totally unrealistic.
They don't put the absolutely best plane they have in the hands of just any "ordinary pilot". This is meant to be the best they have ... and when he pulls off that "Leaf on the wind" maneuver, it is clearly shown.
@@kennyreid332well he is more like Maverick. Full of himself and reckless and save the day in the end just like Mav, on the other hand Rooster is like Iceman. Always play on safe
For me the most emotional moment is when Maverick says "I'm sorry Goose"... shows how much Mav had tried to protect his best friends kid up to when he realizes that he failed...
He told Rooster to pull the ejection handle. Usually it's the pilot (not RIO) who would pull the handle and ejection sequence would be pilot first, RIO second. If RIO pulls the handle he would be ejected first but pilot himself would have to pull his own handle to eject, otherwise he would stay with the aircraft. This is wild but I guess this together with how Mav saved Rooster from SAM indicate Mav felt guilty about Goose and wanted to sacrifice to redeem himself.
@@Noizemaze4 Nah, it might a grave mistake Mav and Rooster did when they hurried with start up. Ejection seats are usually disarmed when aircraft is on the ground and should be armed before take off. They seem to forget to do it.
Probably, but even with that, the portrayal in this movie is actually more positive than expected. The Su-57 is a very powerful threat even with this movie's logic.
Because the Su-57 was designed to be supermaneuverable, it is more maneuverable than even the F-22, the only US supermaneuverable fighter in service (The F-15 S/MTD doesn't count), but the F-22 will easily beat the Su-57 because the F-22 is proven to be stealthy, unlike the Su-57.
The funny part was the terrain can confuse the SU-57 targeting system, but not the F-14's targeting system, even though SU-57 is supposed to be the more advance plane.
If it is anything like the F-22, it's terrain navigation software would be screaming at the pilot to pull up the whole time. lol So I hear anyways. I wasn't a pilot.
@xXSynAckXx yeah the first hand signal the SU-57 pilot gave was telling Maverick to take the lead. The second hand signal the pilot gave was telling Maverick to take a heading of 330 degrees, probably a heading for the SU-57's home base.
I actually served in the Navy on an aircraft carrier, in a fighter squadron as a young 19 year old. The patch on Hangman's flight suit with the skull and flaming dagger, I actually served in that unit as a plane captain...so this movie, like the first one takes me back to my active duty days, and the best experiences of my life.
Adding Val Kilmer with the state he’s in added so much authenticity. Maverick once cocky has matured into a wiser Maverick. Managing to bring back the F14 into the plot was genius. The continuity of Maverick from Top Gun aged like fine wine.
@@nadrewod999 The F-14 was made for digfights, while 5th gen fighters are made to shoot stuff from as far as possible. If a F-14 pilot could somehow use a distraction or dodge the first missiles enough to close the distance, It's a 4-6 chance of success. If you consider that the vast majority of active fighter pilots on the world don't have real battle experience things can get quite interesting. But honestly, in a situation like Ukraine pilots should be more worried about anti-air defenses on the ground than encountering other pilots, I'm sure the number of casualities caused by land-to-air missiles are far bigger than air-to-air combat.
That and the Russians, Iranians, Chinese and Indians still use F-14s. we traded a bunch of F-14s to Russia to get all their surplus MIG 25s and MIG 29s (making us the airforce with the most MIGs outside of Russia) just to keep advanced 4th gens out of the hands of the Iranians.

There are some movies, perhaps a majority of them, that are acceptable to be seen for the first time at home. This is not one of them. I've seen it twice in IMAC at $15 a pop. Worth every penny.
There can be many reasons to why not and even I’m not 100% sure but I’m going to say it has to do with the loss of money. Movies make more money in theatres than they do online for the most part; the only movie I can really think of that made an significant amount of money on online was The Interview with James Franco and Seth Rogan. This movie got so much press and so many studios were afraid to release it in theatres, the situation promoted itself. There was a big audience, and a big ‘why was this movie banned from theatres’ that when it was release online, people went and saw it. Another factor is piracy. Once a movie is online, it can easily be seen for free on other websites for free. Every show and movie that is on Netflix is on another streaming site where you can watch the movie/series for free, so it goes back to movies make most of their money from theatres. Also streaming service sites don’t pay enough for the movie in regards to the movies budget including marketing and advertising. There’s an movie that cost 140 million for production, and then 50 million more for marketing and advertising. That’s 200 million dollars, and online streaming sites if anything usually gets a main stream movie 2-5 million. Netflix doesn’t even spend that much on their original movies because they know they’re not going to make a lot money back from it. Same goes for Hulu, and Crackle. Crackle, Xbox Live, and PS Online, and a few other streaming sites also take about 50% in revenue made from the movie. So if the movie made 100,000$, the studios would only get 50,000 back from that streaming site. With the amount of money used to make a lot of main stream Hollywood movies, it would be more of a loss for them to have it both online. I assume they would make less in revenue. Now independent movies made on smaller budgets could make revenue, but I think Hollywood movies would struggle financially. Don’t get me wrong, they’ll make money but not nearly as much.
He made the right decision to push back against those who wanted to release it earlier. We can also thank Godzilla vs Kong for bringing us back to the movies.

US pilots are familiar with the cobra maneuver and its variants, and should know that Russian pilots are trained in it specifically for this scenario. Fun fact - when Mav specifically says they couldn't outrun the Felon's missiles and guns, he did NOT forget to mention the planes specifically. The Tomcat is still an amazingly fast aircraft, even by modern standards, given it's intended role of long range interception of heavy bombers.
@@et3inuyasha Exactly, it's supermaneuverable because it's unstable aerodynamically and relies heavily on automatic flight control systems. Back in the F-14's day those weren't really available so planes were limited by the requirement of being naturally stable in the air.

That's understood. I was curious has to how many pins for the ejection seats there are. My question is what if Rooster had pulled one pin but not the rest.
Very consistent, that. Maverick himself had noted that the "backseat" concerns were often Goose's concern. Ever since the first time I saw that sequence, it's been in my mind that the F-14 was the base commander's "personal" ride.
My best recollection from 40+ years ago is (7) seat pins. Usually the pins are on a connected lanyard but I didn’t see any “remove before flight” flags.

The music is intense, but just slightly triumphant, as if Mav is doing well (which he is, considering the position he's in). Then the Su-57 completely breaks the rules of the game they've been playing up until then, and the music DROPS as you and Mav realize that they're hopelessly outmatched.
Not hopelessly. Maverick sees he isn't going at the same playing field, so he immediately shifts his tactics. Technologically outmatched does not mean skillfully so
The Kulbit/Cobra/Braking Maneuver is apparently a very complicated move to pull off, they were probably fighting a budding Ace. But superior Skill can still easily trump a Tech advantage.
You could Maverick had to put effort into the hydraulics to move the plane, leaning and pulling on the stick…meanwhile the Su-57 are all fly by wire…machines do it all and only thing the pilot needs to do is move the flight stick like a computer joystick.

This scene was absolutely amazing to see in theatres, the sheer violence of the jet engines was practically palpable and the fact the Su-57 pulled a PSM just solidified the film's place as perhaps the best of the year. But what amazes me even more is that the director has only made, like, five films yet each and every one of them has been absolute bangers, one of which is even based on a graphic novel _he_ had written. He even directed the Halo 3 Starry Night trailer, one of the best video game trailers of all time. It ends up being no wonder Top Gun Maverick wound up as it did.
Everything just clicked in the right places for Top Gun Maverick. It was worth the delays and then some. Hands down the best belated sequel I've seen in many years.
My favorite thing is the backstory behind Mavericks moves. "Splitting the throttles" effectively means "killing the thrust in one engine while going "max thrust" on the other. Due to the wide spacing of the engines, this effectively allows you to "throw" the ass end of the plane around, quickly getting your nose angled at a faster rate than normally possible. Even more interestingly, there were 2 versions of the Tomcat. First version had "compressor stall" issues, this means that you could lose an engine, causing the same effect as "splitting the throttles" but since it wasnt planned by the pilot, you would end up in a flat spin and unrecoverable. 2nd version of the Tomcat upgraded some components, limiting the issue from happening, but not totally eliminating it. Finally, remember how goose died? Single engine loss from flying through another aircrafts turbulence/exhaust causing the compressor failure issue. As Maverick wasnt prepared for that, it ended in the flat spin from the first movie and Gooses death. How much you wanna bet that Maverick studied THE HELL out of that problem, to the point that when the upgraded tomcats came out, he was one of the few who could actually recreate the issue, and use it to his advantage. It was actually considered a possible aircraft maneuver but wasnt actively used because the compressor could still potentially stall, killing the engine. It took a very specific amount of control and finesse to pull off without unintentionally killing the powered down engine. Using the very thing that killed Roosters father to help save his son because rather than admit defeat, he studied the issue that caused Gooses death and made it part of his skillset.
Never thought to get into Top Gun. However, watching this scene for the first time, felt like time moved slower, and the goosebumps align with the thrill of the scene.
2:35 in case anyone was wondering what that maneuver was by the SU-57, it’s called the kvochur bell and was invented by a Russian test pilot. realistically that maneuver would only help the missile hit him but it is a good maneuver for slowing down and being able to fire at your enemy’s from those directions when it spins (possible but very unlikely).
That only wouldve worked on missiles that lacked a proximity fuse, and a missile without one is practically rare nowadays, there is a reason why those manuevers are only seen in airshows But still, its a pretty badass move for the movie, so Ill let it slide
I’d say it’s only usable in an extremely close in dogfight where you want to make the enemy overshoot. At least that’s what I do with the Flanker in DCS.

such a good movie, no wonder they wanted to wait for the pandemic to be subsiding to put it into theaters.
Oh yeah
He made the right decision to push back against those who wanted to release it earlier. We can also thank Godzilla vs Kong for bringing us back to the movies.
they are doing it to get more money because they probably spent wayy too much making the film

Honestly this film was surprisingly amazing and far better than I expected
Hearing Mav say, No No No No, as he’s realizing they have no chance against the last fighter. It had the same anger, drive, desire, commitment, that you hear in most of his other intense piloting scenes. It just feels so real, he hasn’t given up yet but he can’t find a solution and he’s running out of time. It just feels so real. Amazing movie
@@nagibatorcheaterov6693 yeah it’s an understandable gripe with the film, I don’t disagree that after mavericks sacrifice the reality if the film went away a bit. But at the same time it is just a movie, and to have 70 percent be pretty realistic I’m okay with losing a bit as it progressed. Either way I really liked it, and I understand your point, thanks for the comment.

I absolutely love how the music changes when the Su-57 does the spin move. Up until that point, they're on even ground, moves and countermoves as they try to get the angle on one another. The music is intense, but just slightly triumphant, as if Mav is doing well (which he is, considering the position he's in). Then the Su-57 completely breaks the rules of the game they've been playing up until then, and the music DROPS as you and Mav realize that they're hopelessly outmatched.
Hah,s#!t sounds like a Tie fighter when it corrects to go after them😄
Not hopelessly.
Superior skill does not beat tech advantage
Such an homage. This fight was incorporating some of the best shots from some of my most beloved flight scenes. Independance day, star wars, reign of fire to name a few
This movie moves me to tears not because it's sad but because of the epic stakes that are built. Truly one of the greatest films ever!
I love how they depict the SU-57 fighter jets, and their pilots
Advanced. Sleek. Deadly. Versatile.
Like sharks streaming through the air, posed to make a kill.
Menacing, without their pilots saying a word or giving any expression.
It's a contrast to the more expressive crew of Maverick's team, who have unique helmets and personalities, and boy does it work.
Phenomenal film.
I think they did it this way so no other country gets offended
@@alfredohumberto2222 This came to mind too. Both factors work. 🤷♂️
@@alfredohumberto2222 I'm pretty sure they didn't care what countries they offended. They kept the Taiwanese flag on Maverick's jacket knowing full well that it would get the movie banned in China. The only reason they used the Su-57 is because it's widely known throughout the world as a cutting-edge fighter aircraft. Yeah, it's a paper tiger in real life, but they needed a fighter that looked the part; and funnily enough, that's exactly what the Su-57 is designed to do in real life. To look the part.
@@Aurik-Kal-Durin problem is noone knows how many of those exist or what they’re capable of, atleast it looks badass lol.
@@PhoeniX_025 Their performance in Ukraine has been poor. Though I don't blame it on the SU-57 themselves. The pilots are lacking in training and Russian logistics had been shit. On the other hand, USA wars have always had the logistics with them, as well as some of the best pilot training programs in the world. And even then, some very good F-22's and F-35's have been lost due to malfunctions.

The part when Maverick and Rooster are in the Hill path where the SU-57 targeting system is useless so the pilot uses the machine gun reminds me of the scene in Independent Day 1 with Steve Hiller being chased by the alien fighter

"The quality of the box matters little. Success depends upon the man who sits in it." - Manfred Von Richthofen 1916-1918
Big words for a 2 year old.
Thats hollywood nonsense, why do you think they spended 180 million on each raptor?
@@angelacosta5457 Yeah and with an idiot at the controls a Raptor would be useless.
Why do you think the F-35 got beat by the Viper in Dogfights originally? Well, the Pilots flying the Vipers had 3,000-4,000 hours in it?
At which time the Pilots knew their aircraft inside out, far more than the F-35 pilots did know theirs.
It didn't help either that the F-35 still didn't have it's full potential back then, and still doesn't now.
Why do you think the US spends massively on big realistic exercises?
As for what lack of training does, well look no further than the Russian air force. They have bloody good 4th and 4.5 gen aircraft and they are underperforming to a ridiculous degree.

Simply spectacular movie, and this scene, damn, I enjoyed this. The F14 tomcatt will be my favorite fighter jet of all time.
that kvochur bell maneuver was pretty sick

Top Gun was a snoozer -even when it came out in the 80's (and i saw it in the theatre) . Mavericks just rocks (even just on my laptop).
That other pilot was amazing too! He was holding his own in the 2v1! Great scene!👏👏👏
It's somewhat easier when you're in a fifth gen jet with thrust vectoring to be fair!
That only wouldve worked on missiles that lacked a proximity fuse, and a missile without one is practically rare nowadays, there is a reason why those manuevers are only seen in airshows
But still, its a pretty badass move for the movie, so Ill let it slide
It also turned the plane so you had the biggest target to shoot it.
I’d say it’s only usable in an extremely close in dogfight where you want to make the enemy overshoot. At least that’s what I do with the Flanker in DCS.
@@mexicanbanjo9325 thats if the enemy pilot is too stunned to go for guns, like the guy above said, it basically gives them a bigger area to shoot at
