On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. The part that killed me about that movie wasn’t the F18 vs SU-57 dogfight… It’s the fact that they sent a bunch of F18s to do a mission that we have much more capable aircraft for…
Well the explanation was that they needed 2-seater aircrafts, this makes most aircrafts not an option anymlre
@@optimusprime7275 Except that explanation also made no sense, and they even proved it in the movie too. Maverick managed to do it alone. Sure, he is 'amazingly' skilled, but that wouldn't be necessary with more modern aircraft. More capable aircraft for strikes like that can do this single-seated no problem...
@@Shade01982 it wasn't due to the story, it was for the filming. The Navy wouldn't let Tom Cruise fly a multi-million aircraft😂they needed a 2nd seat for a real pilot

From what I've heard about the F-22s flight control system, you pretty much remove the 'aviate' part of 'aviate, navigate, communicate' mantra of pilotage. You tell the airplane where you want to be and where you want to point your nose and it puts you there, physics permitting.
@@PrimarchX To be fair though thats exactly what every single fly-by-wire system does, the F-22 just has more computing power and engine/vectoring power to pull off more ridiculous stuff.
This was really eye-opening to someone who doesn't fully comprehend the gap between fighter gens.

Just so you know… Our F22 raptor would be considered a 6th gen plane compared to the Felon. We are still that far ahead of them.

@@HahaHaha-gq8ft i can tell for sure that you have no clue about neither of them. nor does anyone else outside of people directly involved. Guessing is not the same as knowing for sure. su57 may be busted the moment it enters any high g maneuver or it may actually be able to shoot down f22's with no more than a buttons press. being in service for years make it more likely that f22 will have less fatal flaws, but combat service would be sure to bring out some more, and there is not enough info about current state of su57 in service so where do you even get that info yours?

Amazing video!!
i appreciate how the directors knew that there's no way the Tomcat can beat su-57s in a turn fight, so they made it a chase sequence , using mostly reversals (or asymmetric thrust and herbst maneuver magic) to get to the others six. The canyon terrain confusing the Felon's targeting system is a stretch , but it's still better than Maverick outturning the Felon hahaa

Felon for sure can do these maneuvers. Su-37 could do them and it’s not a current gen plane. I would like to see this again but with two F-14 and I would say that only about half of the time the Felon would be able to get both…

Question: The movie indicated that the F-14 is able to split its thrust. (Adjust engine power separately.) Maverick combined this with left rudder (and I think vertical pitch) to induce a spiral and decrease air speed. Instinctively I would think that this would induce a flat spin, but I just don't know. Does DCS allow you to split the thrust?
Yes DCS does allow it and you’re correct that it would induce a flat spin lol. Mostly because the engines are pretty far apart in the f14, but differential thrust works well with the f15 with the engines tight together.
After rewatching that scene I decided to play around with the asymmetric throttle limiter off pulling back stick and yawing in the same direction of the yaw from the engine and it does sort of induces a spiral like manoeuvre but you bleed air speed soo quickly that it doesn't appear like it does in the movie and like you said it just induces a flat spin.
I mean, a flat spin would induce a spiral and decrease air speed so technically a win? lol

The first aces of air warfare were most of the time the best at surprising the enemy, killing them by attacking like a hawk from high up and diving towards their unsuspicious prays. It's funny to see that in modern fights the element of surprise is still the major factor, except now it's in a form of a missile that hits you without ever knowing an enemy plane was even there in the first place.
A missile would never be able to fully stealth and in extension so is its sender.

4:11 Exactly what Rooster was thinking in the back seat
When an enemy airplane can basically do a handbrake 180 turn and just get on your six you know you are outmatched.
The SU57. The ultimate dogfighter, capable of just going 180° on you. Unfortunately for the guys that will pilote this, we now live in an age where we launch missiles at each other from beyond-visual range. So I'm pretty interested in knowing how it would fare in that compartment against a modern F16 or F22. Or an F35.
Versus the F16, it would not have nearly the advantage that it does against the F-14 in this video but would have the ability to still win possibly most of the time. Versus the F22 or F35, the SU57 would have almost no chance at all. Against either of those opponents, it would most likely just be stealth killed with no chance to respond at all but even given notice, those aircraft will still outmaneuver the SU57 about as badly as the SU57 outmaneuvers the F-14. At least one type of F35 doesn't even have to face the opponent to shoot them down, they can kill you from in front of you when you think you are about to win. The F35 is disgusting and basically unbeatable unless the pilot is has a stroke in the middle of the fight.
not even the best dogfighter
The US Military did several tests of an F-14, F-15 or F-18 against an F-22. The F-22 regularly won in contests where up to 8 4th gen fighters were sent up to take on just 1 F-22. The pilots who flew the F-22 complained about how easy the dogfights were. I really doubt the SU57 would dominate against the F-22. It truly is an amazing dogfighter.
Both the F22 and F35 will lose, because they cannot shoot down the SU57 from a long distance, as they do with other fighters, and then in a dogfight they will be outmaneuvered and shoot down just by gunfire.

Interesting info; Aircraft built in 60's thru the 80's were designed to be stable, whereas the newer aircraft are designed to be unstable. If you were to remove the flight control computer from the 5th generation aircraft, and some of the 4th generation fighters, the pilot would not be able to maintain stable flight, and they would have to eject. That's why the Felon is able to make those kind of turns, and the F-14 can't.
How else would you expect the 5th gen aircrafts to get these super maneuverability, Both the F-22 and Su-57 can literally dance in the air 😅
The Russian SU 27 planes were built on the same principle, different from the classic weight distribution in airplanes (the center of gravity is not in the front).
I think there was a case at Le Bourget when the control system of SU 27 failed and the pilot manually flew the flight program and finished the flight. Of course, it is a matter of pilot skills, but still planes can be controlled without balancing systems in case of emergency.

My understanding of evading those missiles is that when you pop flares, you also have to turn off the afterburner. Otherwise the missiles stay with the temperature of the burner without getting fooled by the flares.
Of course, the enemy plane will just use that to bleed your speed until you're just stalling.
it probably wont help much. Modern IR missles have ECCM which already counters flares most of the time. The only way to somehow avoid this is to pre-flare before the missle is launched.
In most of those engagements, the tomcat had already bled plenty of energy. Turning off afterburners would be suicide
Turning off afterburners doesn't instantly cool the exhausts. They would still be putting out an enormous heat signature. IR missile evasion does not work that way.
Turning off AB does not instantly cool your engine nozzle down, and by doing that you just signed your own death sentence by losing thrust in a dogfight
I believe the flares produce a much larger heat signature that not only trick older IR systems but it also blinds them in a way that the flares are the only things it sees therefore it will lock on to them instead, but new systems are really good at tracking and you basically have to pop flares as soon as the other plane started trying to get a lock because if it manages to get a lock it's goodbye
To think the F-22 can compete and win with it just shows how capable both these aircraft are.
The F-22 can win, but it’s a fairly even fight, and I think it’s super fun to watch the all-mighty F-22 struggle for once, instead of just dominating
@@PhilipTrouble “finally, a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!”-chad f-22
@NoSoyAllowed you can compare from real videos doing maneuvers and shows. Damn! They are almost indedical with simulator Dcs. I have watch many videos with f.22 show off and su 57.
@NoSoyAllowed It’s an extremely capable machine, enough that the European militaries decided the Eurofighter Typhoon won’t be able to handle it any longer. And I‘m very sure that Sukhoi was specifically tasked to conceive an aircraft capable of taking on the Raptor when they got the contract for building them
@@PhilipTrouble The F22 has faced the Su57 three times on this channel, and it won twice and tied once (though in that video they did an extra round, so the F22 still won).
Switch roles. See what he see's he'll feel your pain too. But I'd love to see a 'What if..' the YF-24 essentially the Tomcat in F-22 form swing-wing. And has vectoral thrust. Cool video as I served with the Tomcat twice before they retired. VF-211 Checkmates and World Famous VF-31 Tomcatters. Sad they're this poor now. But they were amazing planes. Seen them do well over mach 1 several times
I noticed that when deploying chaff and flares against a fox2, getting out of burner helps defeat the missile.
Su-57 is currently waiting for an engine upgrade, it's using older gen from the Su-27 era while manufacturer sorts out some production issues. Both aircraft have 3D vectoring thrust nozzles allowing the pilot to do magic tricks and while the F-22 'only' has 2D vectoring letting it pitch up/down extremely hard, both systems cause severe bleed of kinetic energy. Plane becomes a brick. The need for high power, high response engines is paramount.
Check out F-22 pilots presentation about training against Indian Airforce including canard + vectoring Su-35.
Russia's current doctrine is focusing on super manoeuvrability with some low-observable tech, while USA goes full stealth. The F-22 radar return is estimated to be the size of a steel marble, an incredibly impressive achievement for such a large flat aircraft. The photos of Su-57 with all the rivets showing and non-stealth paint just doesn't stack up... yet.
I’ve read that the reason that the Russians hadn’t put the new engines in the SU-57 yet is that the new ones are larger than the older engines. Also I thought it was the SU-37 Terminator that had the vectoring thrusters, not the SU-35. Though the SU-37 is a modified SU-35, and as far as I’m aware only two were ever actually modified (I might be mistaken on that though).
@@KionKamon Vectoring thrusters used and tested on SU-27, SU-35, SU-37 and SU-57. SU-35 using them by default, except export versions. Vectoring thrusters are banned from export, so even export version of SU-37 will go without them.
F-22 also has a lot of rusted rivets

Man you can tell that even though you got your ass kicked you enjoyed the fight,. Respect for the sacrifice
7:20 favorite part. that confusion tho..
"Like fighting a piece of paper". A very apt description. That thing turned a new leaf every 2.5 seconds.
Yes, the “should” have died, but your test has the same issue that the simulator pilots investigating the Sully Hudson landing had: they knew what was going to happen and they were able to anticipate.
So, you need to start a fight with him directly adjacent to you, and he can’t immediately react…he needs to delay his reaction.
So, they’d be able to survive the first one. But I agree they wouldn’t survive any of the others.
There's also the small detail of Maverick being probably the best pilot in the planet XD
Bro, he started on his six and still lost, the poor Tomcat has NOTHING on the 57.
well in the last match he had element of surprise and successfully rammed him...
I'm not sure what problems the simulator pilots investigating US Airways 1549 had, but those simulations were simply to answer the question of it was even possible for Sullenberg to make an emergency landing at Teterboro or return to LaGuardia (it should be noted that the NTSB never questioned his decision to land in the Hudson).
Once the NTSB added a 35-second delay to the simulation to remove the anticipation of a dual bird strike (35 seconds being how long it took for Sullenbarg and FO Skiles to assess the situation, attempt one engine restart, and decide to ditch), none of those simulation pilots were able to make a successful landing at Teterboro or Laguardia.
Great use of quotation marks. Definitely necessary, or else we wouldn’t have understood what you’re saying.
The sky shot on 4:23 was beautiful. Had to re-watch it 5 times....

10/10 Targeting
10/10 Playing with his prey
10/10 FOREPLAYING WITH HIS PREY

57 will dust an F14 pretty much every time. Great video illustrating the differences. A couple things to consider when comparing to the movie, The first 57 was a surprise attack. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a spaceship, If someone rakes you with fire before human reaction can kick in, you’re going down.
As for the second 57, it was a chase, with guns. Not a dogfight. Their objective was to escape. Not saying that would change the outcome there. But it might be an interesting scenario to play out. The F14 is faster than the SU57, although that doesn’t speak for how fast they get to their top speeds. So escape is maybe feasible?
lots of luck with the missiles always dying to the flares too
top gun maverick's world has some OP flares
@@creditianistani6474they only dodged one missile with flares. The first missile was dodged because Maverick used the falling Felon as chaff 😅
Hilarious commentary love it. Great effort - sometimes people can be more of a 'Goose' & less of a 'Maverick', its the way it goes.
Love to see that again from the POV of the pilot of the SUV-57.

This is like watching someone bringing an Ace Combat plane into a combat sim. The things that plane is able to do are outside of anything you are used to seeing.
You tried your best in an unfair fight. Kudos for remaining cool and keeping things entertaining.
Gives you some deeper respect to the F22 as well since it can do the same thing.
@@michaelmichaelagnew8503 no it can't. F22 can't dog fight like this with 2D vectoring. F22 can kill the target from far enough though. But like this close af one on one dog fight, it can't do the crazy shit su57 does

You put the UI theme as you watch that thing fly and it fits perfectly imo
You're already dead lol!
I feel like you forgot to take in to account the element of surprise for the first plane (in the movie not in your clip). He wasn't expecting to be shot down. But the second guy would never have lost.
It's one thing to fly a miracle jet. It's quite another to use one in close combat. Nobody dogfights anymore. The original Top Gun knew this.
It's pure top gun 2 fantasy! An airplane with the characteristics of the SU57 against an airplane developed practically in the 60s and that is currently out of service for 16 years!
