I tip my hat to you, sir! We had our cabin spray foamed and so glad we did. I felt sorry for the guy crawling underneath like you just did - no way I could have done it, or at least done it well. The payoff is SO going to be worth it. Looks like you used closed cell, and that forms it’s own vapor barrier. You’re going to be thanking yourself for years for getting that done.
I've watched so many cabin builds and have been amazed at the different methods people have used to insulate the floor. The closed-cell spray foam (in my VERY humble opinion) is the way to go, Mike. The vapor barrier it provides along with the insulation is worth it. Great work!

I made a video of using the exact same spray foam to seal the bays of my room in attic of my man cave garage. As you can see in my video, spraying over your head is the worst and messiest! So having to do your entire job over your head is kudos to you!
We had our entire house spray foamed during a complete reno and we don’t regret it. There was an engineering test I read that showed 2x2 wall mock up using spray foam insulation being stronger in all aspects vs the same wall configuration in 2x6 using fibreglass insulation.
Saw something interesting for the P-trap on some expensive RVs. They use a air compressor to blow out from the interior drain. Interesting instead of using a clean out drain. ))
Nice! I used the froth pack in my garage - it makes such a mess! Drips still on my walls and floor. I sorta expected it to expand more, like the cans do - but I believe the closed cell is tighter and doesn’t expand a lot. Made my house so much warmer.

I’m sure the closed cell spray foam will provide you with an excellent water/air infiltration barrier. I am a little surprised, however, at how little the foam expanded. Chuck Cassady (another CZcamsr) just did a video where he covered four important tips for spray foam success, including the right air temperature (~70 - 85F), the right substrate temperature (~70 - 85F, although the manufacturer’s recommended range is a bit larger), shaking the tanks before spraying, and replacing your tip if you stop spraying for more than 30 seconds. So my guess would be that the lack of expansion is due to the air temperature being at the low end of the range and the underside of the cabin being several degrees below that. I’ll be interested in hearing how it performs.
I’d have to agree, my first thought when he showed the thermometer was yeah but how cold is it under the cabin. I’m sure this will make a noticeable difference but I don’t think it’ll be as efficient as it could be.

I sprayed the ceilings of two 40' conex shipping containers with one Lowes 620 Froth kit about 3 years ago. It was going for $750 back them and I noticed it's up to over $1100 now. I was well worth it. It stopped the dripping condensation in the winter and dropped the inside surface temp by over 30° in the hot Texas summers. It is a very messy job. Got that crap all over my prescription glasses. It might be a wise idea to use and old pair of glasses for the spraying because it does not come off to a clear lens after you scrape it off.
I got this at Menards for about $900, I knew it would help but wow, I was blown away by the difference it made, especially since I really only got 1 inch of foam in a lot of areas.
That's a messy job for sure! I put Vaseline on my face so it doesn't stick! I just met with a guy yesterday to do our latest cabin, I think subbing it out is the best way to stay clean LOL! That will be a great improvement!

I didn't know how much water vapor was migrating up from the ground, even though it was on pylons. My floor is warm when it's cold.

The rodents would then have no desire to penetrate the material. Is it 100%? Doubt it - but probably the very best insulating barrier to defeat pests (insects too!) I have some that was spayed over 5 years ago in a similar situation and there is no evidence of any scratches or chew marks like I’ve seen on wood that we covered up.
You could just shove some hay bales around the trap. In the midwest, where I live, farmers will surround their foundation with hay bales every fall and remove them in the spring- cheap and effective.
What about installing some cement fiberboard over that with some fiberglass insulation? That way you have it sealed as well for added R factor and protection from rodents.
My mind is totally weird. I need to get out more!! At about 1:30 when you were outside and you put on that protective hood, for some reason I laughed. It made me think you were ready for the tour being in Willy Wonka! That spray foam is fantastic. You can always add on more later. I've watched a few videos where the professionals have sprayed it on thick to expand up to eight inches. One couple with kids started coughing as they moved into their new home. Turns out that they sprayed that foam on way to thick and it didn't all dry. In the attic and walls they found nothing but black mold. That couple was living outside in an RV, unable to go into their home. They had to sue the builder and foam installer because the entire home was unlivable. People need to make sure they spray that on thin and do multiple layers. The inch or two you sprayed under neath the cabin will provide a nice layer to keep the cold off the interior floor and keep bugs or animals from trying to chew threw that stuff. Once again, very enjoyable to watch, thanks. It's 18F here in Ohio. My electric blanket is on high, haha.

Maybe use the floor off cuts for a sweet herringbone pattern somewhere? Also lol needed an automotive under car creeper thingy and some sheets of plywood and then had your brother in law pulling you back and forth while spray foaming 😂

I was wondering what the difference was between the "Sealant" and the "Insulation" as they indicated they were for different spaces. Glad you did that and interesting to see that the "Sealant" basically looks like it covers identically to the insulation. We've got our 1st floor spray foamed, but the loft space hasn't yet been done, and the condensation from the rising heat and moisture is a real issue for us now. (We wrapped the entire home in 3/4" and 1" Polyiso foil faced sheets, then covered that with Zip sheathing (7/15ths walls and 5/8ths roof). So the house is very tight, but with nowhere to go, the moisture laden air condenses on any cooler surface and our loft roof/walls are the place that happens. I was going to wait until spring to have the spray foam company come back and do the loft, but may have to take matters into my own hands with the condensation issue being such a pain. Glad to see how well it turned out for you, even if it was a major pain.
From what I could tell the sealant doesn’t meet certain fire resistance standards but is better at keeping out bugs/pests. Hope you guys can get that ceiling finished that’s no fun!
all that flooring off cuts could be joined into squares used on a deck or elsewhere maybe even somewhere around pond / just saw something similar made of Trex like decking commercially for laying on concrete patios to give feel of deck where water and debris would not accumulate on patio / deck just hate to see any hard wood materials burnt for firewood
I feel your Pain. Just Remember: In most cases, an insufferable job like this pays off Bigtime. Next time you are sitting in front of the woodstove when it is 10 degrees out, you will feel like a million bucks for having suffered on your back to do this important job. Fact.
Looking back, would you have done anything different as far as order in which you completed your build? Would you have insulated the floor much earlier? Would you have done your plumbing earlier? Things like that. Obviously the final product is spectacular. Just curious if any changes you would have made
Nice work! Should help a lot. We recently had our basement sils and some basement walls spray foamed and its made a good difference from what I can tell checking wall/air temps. Didn't realize there was a product in between a can of gap filler and hiring out spray foam. Any complaints with the product?
Honestly no major complaints, maybe cost it’s $800 (400 each) for the a and b canisters at menards and another $100 for the gun kit. It yields 620 board feet. They give you a ton of the gap filling tips and only 4 fan tips, and all I needed were the fan tips so that was a minor annoyance. But all in all aside from the fact I was spraying in a crawl space it was pretty easy.
That does not look like a fun job but I bet it will be worth it. Probably air tight. What is the “R” value per inch? Wonder if you could do that inside instead of fiberglass.

Were thinking about spraying under our cottage. We have pink insulation now, not a lot. Its covered with the fiber/foam black board. We are having trouble with pests boring holes through the seams and along edges were it meets the rafters. Can we spray this over the black boarding and will it keep the pests out?
I’m not sure what you mean by black boarding? I’d personally replace the pink insulation with spray foam and maybe protect the whole thing with hardware fabric.
I remember when the Canadian government gave out grants for people to retrofit spray foam, then had to pay hundreds of millions to remove it when the urea formaldehyde broke down and made people sick. So many are using spray foam these days- I really hope the new foam lasts better.
I don't know how many different ways spray foam *could* go wrong, but a common way is when overapplied. That prevents it from curing properly, leading to people getting sick. So in that scenario, installation is the problem, not the technology. For the majority of cases (correct installation), spray foam works great.
@@jacklong7048 the Canadian government gave grants (CHIP grants) from 1975-1978 for injectionable foam insulation (urea formaldehyde or UFFI,) then banned the product in 1980, then paid to have in removed in the early 1980s. UFFI was banned in North America, but still used in Europe and elsewhere.
How did the spray foam hold up during this past winter? I have a cabin with 1/2 finished underneath the floor with fiberglass insulation but it keeps falling down and now critters using it as there home. So I Eatherington have to get under there and somehow attach this veneer to hold up the fiberglass insulation or pull it all out and spray foam it..any suggestions?
I was a bit disappointed by the amount of expansion of the foam. I have seen people spray foam onto walls and the expansion was about sixty times filling the bay with a cover of about eight inches deep. The expansion of that foam was two times at the most, and it should have filled the bay to the depth of the joists and it did not seem to expand at all.

Thanks for the view under your cabin. I've also been under my crawl space. I had a rat problem before, but now something has showed up om my three cameras in the crawl space again. Hate those pest animals. And even if I have cameras, it takes a long time figuring out where it comes from. I think it's a mice this time, and you almost get insane figuring out where it came from. How old are you btw? I am 40.
So far as I can tell nothing seems to be getting into it. It cured a lot harder than I was expecting also. I think some companies even sell a version with insecticide.

Yea, it's really made a good improvement. I used the leftover foam to help seal the crawl space on the top and bottom of the foam boards I installed.

Thats not a bad Idea I use an air compressor to blow out the water lines so it wouldn't be any extra work.

If you have trouble with freezing in the P-trap, you may want to try a waterless trap made for RVs. They are available on Amazon.

Seems a bit less squeaky, made an amazing difference holding heat and also made the floor so much more comfortable to walk on.

I'm not sure on skirting, I may leave it totally empty to make it a less inviting place for mice and others.

I was wondering what the difference was between the "Sealant" and the "Insulation" as they indicated they were for different spaces. Glad you did that and interesting to see that the "Sealant" basically looks like it covers identically to the insulation. We've got our 1st floor spray foamed, but the loft space hasn't yet been done, and the condensation from the rising heat and moisture is a real issue for us now. (We wrapped the entire home in 3/4" and 1" Polyiso foil faced sheets, then covered that with Zip sheathing (7/15ths walls and 5/8ths roof). So the house is very tight, but with nowhere to go, the moisture laden air condenses on any cooler surface and our loft roof/walls are the place that happens. I was going to wait until spring to have the spray foam company come back and do the loft, but may have to take matters into my own hands with the condensation issue being such a pain. Glad to see how well it turned out for you, even if it was a major pain.
From what I could tell the sealant doesn’t meet certain fire resistance standards but is better at keeping out bugs/pests. Hope you guys can get that ceiling finished that’s no fun!

all that flooring off cuts could be joined into squares used on a deck or elsewhere maybe even somewhere around pond / just saw something similar made of Trex like decking commercially for laying on concrete patios to give feel of deck where water and debris would not accumulate on patio / deck just hate to see any hard wood materials burnt for firewood
Yea I thought of doing that, these are also pieces we culled due to pretty severe flaws.

Looking back, would you have done anything different as far as order in which you completed your build? Would you have insulated the floor much earlier? Would you have done your plumbing earlier? Things like that. Obviously the final product is spectacular. Just curious if any changes you would have made
Yes most definitely I would have done a more conventional order of things. Would have done a normal crawl space too.
Feedback how this foam works out would be great.

Nice work! Should help a lot. We recently had our basement sils and some basement walls spray foamed and its made a good difference from what I can tell checking wall/air temps. Didn't realize there was a product in between a can of gap filler and hiring out spray foam. Any complaints with the product?
Honestly no major complaints, maybe cost it’s $800 (400 each) for the a and b canisters at menards and another $100 for the gun kit. It yields 620 board feet. They give you a ton of the gap filling tips and only 4 fan tips, and all I needed were the fan tips so that was a minor annoyance. But all in all aside from the fact I was spraying in a crawl space it was pretty easy.
That does not look like a fun job but I bet it will be worth it. Probably air tight. What is the “R” value per inch? Wonder if you could do that inside instead of fiberglass.
It's R6 per inch, and it's made an incredible difference.
I think you may want to add rodent protection. Rock wool or some kind of mesh. I think mice like to chew thru that and use if for nests.

Ugh!!!! I worked for a weatherization company. Been under many crawlspace in a bunny suit. I absolutely despise it. They should pay $100 hr. to that.

Does not look like a fun job at all but I’d say for a one man job that would be the way to go. Definitely less labor intensive than cutting and installing foam board.
It really wasn't all that bad, worst part was just crawling around under there. It also got up to almost 80 and I was sweating pretty bad.

When I first started I was moving too fast with the gun, it’s supposed to expand to an inch thick and if you want more insulation you can go over it again after it cures
I’m certainly no expert, but it looks to me as if the foam isn’t thick enough. Did it fail to expand properly?
I was moving to quickly with the gun when I first started applying it, I went back over the thin sections.
Were thinking about spraying under our cottage. We have pink insulation now, not a lot. Its covered with the fiber/foam black board. We are having trouble with pests boring holes through the seams and along edges were it meets the rafters. Can we spray this over the black boarding and will it keep the pests out?
I’m not sure what you mean by black boarding? I’d personally replace the pink insulation with spray foam and maybe protect the whole thing with hardware fabric.
I remember when the Canadian government gave out grants for people to retrofit spray foam, then had to pay hundreds of millions to remove it when the urea formaldehyde broke down and made people sick. So many are using spray foam these days- I really hope the new foam lasts better.
Me too! I dunno, at least this stuff isn't trapped inside walls, hopefully if anything goes wrong it dissipates.
I don't know how many different ways spray foam *could* go wrong, but a common way is when overapplied. That prevents it from curing properly, leading to people getting sick. So in that scenario, installation is the problem, not the technology. For the majority of cases (correct installation), spray foam works great.

@@jacklong7048 the Canadian government gave grants (CHIP grants) from 1975-1978 for injectionable foam insulation (urea formaldehyde or UFFI,) then banned the product in 1980, then paid to have in removed in the early 1980s. UFFI was banned in North America, but still used in Europe and elsewhere.
How did the spray foam hold up during this past winter?
I have a cabin with 1/2 finished underneath the floor with fiberglass insulation but it keeps falling down and now critters using it as there home. So I Eatherington have to get under there and somehow attach this veneer to hold up the fiberglass insulation or pull it all out and spray foam it..any suggestions?
The foam is holding up. The stuff I used cured pretty darn hard. It made a huge difference keeping the cabin warm or cool.

I was a bit disappointed by the amount of expansion of the foam. I have seen people spray foam onto walls and the expansion was about sixty times filling the bay with a cover of about eight inches deep. The expansion of that foam was two times at the most, and it should have filled the bay to the depth of the joists and it did not seem to expand at all.
That was open cell foam you were seeing. Totally different beast..

It was about $900 all in from Menards We bought the 620 board feet kit (was $800), but you have to buy the gun and tips separate ($100). (Which I’ll mail you if you want). I looks like it’s gone up in price a bit. They also make a smaller kit for 200 board feet that includes everything.

Believe it or not, when I left last trip it was 75 degrees out, heading there tomorrow and it's in the teens so we should find out soon. Could use a bit of weed cleanup for sure.

I was putting it on too thin when I first started. It expands to 1 inch. If you want it thicker you re-coat after it cures.
Thanks for the view under your cabin. I've also been under my crawl space. I had a rat problem before, but now something has showed up om my three cameras in the crawl space again. Hate those pest animals. And even if I have cameras, it takes a long time figuring out where it comes from. I think it's a mice this time, and you almost get insane figuring out where it came from. How old are you btw? I am 40.

So far as I can tell nothing seems to be getting into it. It cured a lot harder than I was expecting also. I think some companies even sell a version with insecticide.

I didn’t spray the deck, only the floor under living space.
