    Hello Nick, hello community.
    Thanks a lot for the great review! I was going to buy RME Fireface UFX III next days but with the release of this new Arturia AudioFuse 16Rig and its extra inputs I´m not so sure anymore. How would you compare AudioFuse 16Rig and Fireface UFX III? Would it be any quality difference notable of its converters? Would be the more pricey UFX III still the better option?

    • @sonicstate
      @sonicstate  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I dont personally have experience of the RME, but I know people that say the convertors are amazing quality. You do get less analog IO ( 2 more mic preamps though) with the RME but you get SPDIF and AES and MADI, but there is the option to record direct to USB drive too. Also the totalmix DSP is on board for processing inputs and outputs making it more like a digital mixer than the 16rig. There is a reason it costs more, it has more features

    • @TheJonHolstein
      @TheJonHolstein Před 7 měsíci +1

      When it comes to the audio quality of inputs, if you don't know how to test and read scientific data from tests, you will not notice any difference on most sound interfaces, as you will not be able to hear the difference, and any difference you would in theory be able to hear, you would not be able to tell which is objectively better. There are lot of myths circulating in the pro audio community, as it isn't a job that requires actual scientific knowledge of these things. The fireface has both built in DSP, and lower latency (that you might be able to make use for monitoring through plugins, if you do vocal recordings and want monitoring effects, and not use the built in ones of the fireface), the arturia gives you neither of these. Presonus skipped the DSP on the Quantum series, because they got the latency low enough to monitor through plugins. Most other makers at least have built in effects for basic vocal monitoring. The fireface also gives you two separate headphone monitoring channels with separate headphone amps, this only has two plugs connected to the same amps, so you don't have to keep track of your adapter, if you ever connect the headphones to a 3.5mm plug. RME have pretty good headphone amps, but I have no idea how they compare in this case. The Fireface can be expanded to support a larger number of channels, when fully expanded. This maxes out at 32 inputs (the 16 built in + 16 over adat). (unfortunately, pesonus seems to have stopped making their quantum series, but they also offered daisy chain capabilities over the built in thunderbolt ports, but apparently, with windows, it might be possible to even get two units to work together on different ports on an thunderbolt expansion card, with a couple of missing features, but that is the only interface I have heard of that supports using more than one connected to windows, Mac OS supports multiple interfaces, but often with latency issues, audio dropouts, and digital artifacts, so you should not rely on that for your everyday solution, at least not plan for it, as you could be lucky to get it working really well, but it isn't a given).

    • @TheJonHolstein
      @TheJonHolstein Před 7 měsíci

      It depends on what you mean. The USB-host port is Midi only, so it can't be used to daisy chain two to a single connection to a computer, like you could to with the presonus Quantum interfaces via their thunderbolt port. Windows does not support connecting two interfaces at the same time (with the exception of two presonus 2626 on the same thunderbolt expansion card, where they can kind of behave as daisy chained), but Mac OS does, but with mixed results as it relates to latency, audio dropouts and so on, so it isn't recommended. It does however have a stand alone mode, so you are probably able to route it in such a way that you would use the ADAT connections to connect one to the other, for just the ports, but then you could get two separate ADAT units with 8 plugs that also has mic pre-amps for quite a bit less than this, so it would not make sense.

    The ribbon mike sounds worse (to me). whats the other mic used on the collar ? P.S excellent USB Interface, This is the USB interface Focusrite and/or others should have done many years ago for 32 I/O. 1 Scarlet 8 I/O + 1 8/IO OctoPre is about the same price but does not get you so many I/O. if you want more mics or, compression just add an Octopre dynamic or equivalent. This is perfect instead of an (expensive) DANTE solution. BTW it seems the mixer is controllable via MIDI so with a USB standard audio driver it should be possible to use audio and control without proprietary drivers (anyone tried ?) that is great to control it, with other external MIDI equipment and Linux. Would like to have seen this been tested with two ADAT boxes and 32 channels with ADAT and WORD clock.

    All of these inputs and no EQ, Compression or Reverb to be seen.

    I'm not convinced by this product at the asking price. If they intended to make a synth studio interface, why not include separate CV outs, on 3.5mm set up for full scaling already. As it is now, the CVs are shared with the outputs, and the alternative outputs on the front as well. And them being shared with the alternatives outputs on the front also makes it so, that when expanding with an ADAT with ins as well as OUTS to free the outputs up to be CV ports, it will make those ports on the front useless. Also any decent synth studio interface with stand alone mode should come with DSP effects, as even though one might have a couple of hardware effects, one typically would want to be able to just use standard effects on several of channels, to have better sound design control over particular sounds in the track. Not having those standard DSP effects, despite the theoretical capability of using it as a mixer with midi faders, it will not be particularly useful as a semi mixer either.
    So it doesn't seem like it is the synth interface that they try to market it as.
    So, well, then, is it the studio center piece for other types of uses, by connecting hardware effects and such? No, because a true studio center piece, most studios would probably expect to come with additional headphone mixes, and not via an option of switching two outputs and using them with a separate headphone amp. It doesn't come with a talkback feature either. Also if it was meant for such uses, of connecting hardware effects, one would also prefer to have more outputs built in, for maximum connectivity. And while not uncommon, a well thought out studio interface should not have inputs on the front that shares channels with inputs on the back, it can get really annoying when temporarily using the front inputs, and then by doing that, disabling the routing of those ports on the back, that are part of a fixed routing.
    For me, it feels like some of the intended features had to be scrapped due to cost, and it still wasn't enough to bring the cost down, to a level where it makes sense.
    The reason presonus skipped dsp on their Quantum interfaces was so they could bring the latency way down to a level where you could monitor through plugins. And the thunderbolt protocol for them, allows for expanding the number of channels by daisy chaining and using ADAT in combination, even aggregate two 2626 via thunderbolt in windows, but the other models allowed for direct daisy chaining thanks to their additional port, and the aggregation isn't perfect.
    But you can't monitor mic inputs via plugins with this interface. You can't daisy-chain it either, so it falls short compared to the Quantum interfaces.
    The idea of outputs on the front, is quite nice. But I would have liked to see them combined with inputs as well, and not through using the only Hi-z/Mic pre-amp inputs, neither through the then quite impractical 3.5mm input as it will not match the hardware that the outputs goes through.
    I am also yet to be convinced by the usefulness of a 3.5mm input. 3.5mm to 3.5mm cables are not common enough that everyone has one, especially not now when the 3.5mm plugs have been dropped on most phones, so it would no longer be the way to connect one's phone to a speaker either. And then, you might just as well invest in a cable that goes from 3.5mm to standards tele jacks, or even have suitable adapter, if you think you will use any hardware featuring a 3.5mm stereo out, you will need a dedicated cable in either case, and the 3.5-3.5mm will be more limited in terms of general usage in a studio.
    The USB host port, makes less sense when the interface can't function as a proper mixer/stand alone unit with DSP effects, as you would have little use for a midi mixer, and also using the host plug as a way to send midi through the outs on the back, would make little sense in a scenario when the interface is connected to a computer anyhow as one then could route a controller connected to the computer (possibly via the USB hub ports on the interface), and then out via the din ports. And if it was intended for connecting additional Midi USB interface to the sound interface instead of the computer for having it all in one interface, and not wasting USB ports on simple things like a midi interface, then it would make more sense for the port to be on the back, as you would want to install that cable more permanently.
    If it was about half the price, the 16 inputs, in combination with the DC coupled outputs, and a few features that can come in handy but are mostly just extras, it could make a lot of sense, despite the single headphone output channel and the limitation of just two mic pres and no built in DSP. But for this price, I have a hard time seeing where this product actually has any meaningful offerings that in any area puts it ahead of any competing product.
    I guess the price is the most important aspect to keep in mind. Reviewers are given this interface for free, it seems, I haven't heard anyone say they had to send it back. But even when a reviewer has to send a product back, they still do not need to pay their money for it. And while making a video costs money, being able to get a product in advance to be able to put up a video on the day of release of the product or within a couple of days, gives the reviewer and advantage of traffic that later reviews will likely not get.
    If a reviewer really had to consider the price of the product they are testing, it would result in a different perspective on many products.
    I get that producing a video review cost money. And if you don't have any use for the product you are given, or you have to send it back, you are not directly paid. But if your job is to make video reviews, you have to consider if you can either benefit from getting a free or discounted product, or if you think the traffic will pay for the review. But that is a very different calculation compared to a potential buyer having to go and pay full price in a store for a product. That they may make money of, because of how they use it, but where any pros/cons are put up against a competing product, that also costs real money, and that may either cost less, or the same, but with different specs, or more and possibly with a much better suited feature-set.
    I really wanted to be convinced by the sells-pitch, that this was a good central hub for a synth studio. But by watching this video and Loopop's video, I wasn't. And that was before I checked the price. I thought it perhaps was 2/3rds the actual price, and I still wasn't convinced, due to the strange compromises.
