It not only has 1.5 billion views (and 10 million likes) it has an Oscar-winning film named after it (a Queen biopic). It's the opening song of what's generally accepted as the best live performance ever (Queen's 20-minute Live Aid gig). It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004. It's also the most streamed song from the 20th century. But it's okay not to like it - though you'd have a tough time arguing it wasn't good. 🙂

He didn't kill a man, it is a metaphor, it is about everything in his life changing, and what that means exactly has been up for speculation since this song dropped in 1975. Freddie never said what the song was about he said the meaning was up to the listener. The song has 3 parts, it is a rhapsody which is a type of musical format. The parts are The action, the judgment, the outcome and in the end, nothing really matters. Musically this song is a masterpiece and the instrumentation is flawless. This song is done without technical enhancements, those are real voices and real instruments with no auto-tune. This one has 1.5 billion views because it deserves 1.5 B views, but this is not the only time the song appears on the board so in fact, the song has far more views than 1.5 billion. This song has also been covered by tons of groups, even the Muppets covered it which I find to be hysterical. It is an iconic song and Queen is an iconic band. Not everyone likes all types of music but anyone who knows anything about music, will not dispute that musically this song is elaborate and brilliantly written. Thank you for your reaction. Now duck because I believe the Queen Army (which is huge, and very loyal, on CZcams) will most likely hit your page with guns a-blazing. You might even consider taking down this reaction because nobody needs a bunch of dislikes against their site.

Actually while I agree with you and I think that is what it is about. Freddie never said what it is about and it actually started life in a country+western style so who knows maybe it is as written. The only thing that puts me firmly in your camp (and a lot of others) and makes me think it is as you have written are the lines Mama Just Killed a Man. Pulled My Trigger now he’s dead. If Mama had killed the “Man” then it would have been Mama Pulled The Trigger….. But there you go. All the other parts of the song work whether it was Metaphorical or Documentary.

@@sergeinester6261 His mother didn't do anything, the person is speaking to his mother. As a matter of fact, every time he would sing this song live, he would pucker up and send a kiss to his mom who said this was the only song of his that bothered her in any way. I don't think Freddie started HIS life in a country western style, he was born in Zanzibar to very religious Zoroastrian parents then at age 8 sent to a private, English, boys boarding school in India, where he remained until he was 17 and moved along with his family to London, so there certainly would be no reflection to his actual upbringing and the lyrics. Depending on how you choose to define the lyrics, he could simply be reflecting on how he is leaving all that his family is, to become a Rock Star, perhaps even selling his soul to the devil but certainly leaving the family religion and culture behind. I don't really care what the lyrics mean if they mean anything at all, Bo-Rap was comprised of 3 separate songs that Freddie had written years apart and never finished. The more I learn about this song, they less I think I understand what the meaning actually is, if there really even is a meaning. When Freddie was accused of being a Satanist because he spoke of Beelzebub in this song, and was asked why he used it, he kind of laughed and shyly said it didn't mean that he worshiped Satan, he just liked the sound of the word. So Freddie was a mystery in so many ways and held a lot of dark secrets, so who knows how to figure out what he means in any of his odd lyrics. March Of The Black Queen is a strange one, too.

What I’m saying and you are saying the same thing is that we don’t know for sure. The line I was pointing out - was because it was from a first person perspective. Without that the song could easily have been a third person perspective. And yes black Queen is even more obtuse - I heard Brian talk about it when he travelled to Zanzibar to see Freddie’s home there - that it possibly had some references to the slave trade there. Like the greatest song writers - we weaves an ambiguous story that we still delight in today. My Fairy King is genius too

Nice reaction. The song is extremely creative, it is a mini opera in 6 minutes. The song is also extremely complex, it has 49 different cords, most popular songs today have 1 - 4 different cords. On top of that lead singer Freddie Mercury is often chosen as the best vocalist of all time. The song is from a time where music was truly creative, there is no autotune or special effects here it was all recorded on analogue type. The vocals in this song stretch over 3 octaves. The song has poly rhythms and key changes. It is through composed, meaning there is no chorus and each section is different. The song goes through the 5 stages of grieve, you can practically write a book about this song, that is certainly not something you can say about every song. Bohemian Rhapsody also has the tendency to bring people together, people just love to sing this song together.
It is art, people forget that music is suppose to be art.
Bohemian Rhapsody has often been voted as the best song of all time.
The basic story of the song is about a young man who kills someone, it starts off with an existential crises, he then confesses the crime to his mother, in the second verse he gives himself over to the authorities. In the middle or opera section, we witness a trial for his soul between heaven and hell. He then becomes angry with his situation in the rock section, and in the end he finally expects his fate. That is basically a whole opera.
But you can also interpret the song as, someone killing a part of himself. The line "Scaramouche will you do the Fandango?" refers to someone instructing a clown to do a dance. Scaramouche is a clown character from Italian opera. Every entertainer faces the problem of having to entertain and perform to other people, even when they themselves might not be doing well. As an entertainer, you have give up on parts of yourself.
Despite all of the complexities of the song, there is humour in the song, and there are parts that everyone can relate to.
If you have not experienced a lot of music, I can see that it might be difficult to understand the genius of the song.
Lead singer and pianist Freddie Mercury wrote this song, it took him around 6 years to write this song. He is known as a musical genius, he was an exertional composer, and singer, he was a great piano player and one of the best performers of all time.

"Nothing really matter, Nothing really matters to me." means now he will do anything to misguide the humans from GOD's right path.

A Bohemian is an artist, a Rhapsody is also an epic poem or the life journey of a character. From the title the song can mean the life story of an artist or an entertainer. "Scaramouche will you do the Fandango?" That is someone instructing a clown to do a jig. As an entertainer you always have to entertainer others no matter how you might feel yourself. The idea of a clown that has to entertain people and make them laugh while he himself is suffering, comes from the opera Pagliacci. An opera that Freddie Mercury also used in It's A Hard Life (which has similar cords to Bohemian Rhapsody). The audience might love you one day and stone you then next day, it is a fickle business.

This 1975 VIDEO alone changed the music industry & how it marketed songs, blew the doors off standard rock song structure, and contributed to the birth of MTV and the avalanche that followed. It cost $5000 to make and STILL influences artists, musicians and bands to this day. Queen brought a theatricality to their performances & entertainment was central in mind for their audiences. Early compositions were intricate, musically complex and featured layered vocals; each band mate was a songwriter with hits; they played small, large and arena gigs, were the first rock band to perform behind the then Iron Curtain (Budapest); endeared scores of fans in huge markets like South America and Japan; ventured into songs for films & dabbled with animation in videos; launched into legendary performance status with LIVE AID 1985. There was no genre off limits to their efforts - witnessed by the gems between the hits on 14 albums (with one additional album after Freddie's death). Pretty darn grand scale.

I get what he’s saying, Queen can be a little much if Bohemian Rhapsody is your first introduction. To answer one of your questions, “Is this a song or a play”, the answer is YES. To both questions. It was intended to be a 6 minute Rock Opera that takes the listener through the story of a condemned young man. From his crime to his execution and the thoughts and emotions he had in between. The first part is the sadness and remorse of his actions, the second part is his farewell to his family, third part is his anger at being condemned, (that’s the part where it gets really going) and the last part is his acceptance of his fate. “Any way the wind blows” is kind of like saying “so be-it”

Number one in UK Christmas 1975. The record company thought it would not sell as it was too long - remember that 45 singles were 4 minutes long. The video, which they have remastered, originally cost 500 pounds. Also, stereo sound was a new thing . . . I made my own stereo amplifier at that time. Sort of opera rock, but a unique song about Freddie killing his old self but at the same time making his mum cry. The silloette of the man is, perhaps the new man . . .

correct me if im wrong but the song is lowkey a metaphor for his coming out to the world as being gay. "just killed a man" being himself. Being gay in the 80's was rough as you can probably imagine, and so you can infer the lyrics being dark and depressing because of this.

Listen to the story in the song well before making judgement;the first part was confession of him killing a man ,the second was been caught, the last part was his girlfriend leaving him obviouslydue to the situation ...without listening to it well and only pay attention to the beat change you don't really know its all connected and the production at that time makes this song a Classic.

  • @TrentRidley
    @TrentRidley Před rokem +1

This genre of music is known as "rock opera," so the idea that it was part of a play is pretty spot on, only the story is told over the course of a single song through changes in the music and vocals that not only tell a narrative, but really change up the atmosphere and emotions at different points as well.
As for the meaning of the song, to my knowledge the band has never confirmed its meaning, but I would suggest to you guys to consider the fact that the lyrics needn't be taken literally. For example, one interpretation is that the lead singer, Freddie Mercury, is singing about his struggle to accept himself and live openly as a gay man. So, the line about killing a man could mean something more along the lines of he has "killed" that part of himself that was denying his own sexuality and the subsequent lyric stating that, "life had just begun, but now I've gone and thrown it all away," could be an expression of the fear he has that he might be ridiculed by and ostracised from society. Again, the band never confirmed the song's meaning, so this is just one possible explanation, but I just wanted to use it as an example in order to open you up to the idea of considering the possible metaphorical meaning/s of a song's lyrics rather than just their literal meaning.
If you want to check out other music in the rock opera genre you could listen to some Meatloaf songs. The song, "I'd do Anything for Love," would be a great place to start as both the song and the music video tell a very well known story that you shouldn't have any trouble picking up on.

Those are fighting words for all of us Queen fans. Queen never wrote a bad song. This song is one you really have to listen to and search for your own meaning. The band liked making people think and getting involved with their music. They loved audience participation. Which is why they wrote the song 'We will rock you' They wanted the fans to be part of their group and sing and make the music with them. You need to watch the movie called Bohemian Rhapsody about the band Queen. People had different interpretations of Queens songs and they didn't like to tell people what the meaning was or why they wrote the songs because they wanted each person to take from it what they could and didn't want to limit peoples imaginations.
Take from the song what you will but really think about it. He could be talking about someone killing someone physically but some thought that the man he killed was himself since it was around this time that he realized that he was bi-sexual. The man he was, was no longer and now he would be judged by the world for who he really was but he was tired of hiding it so it didn't really matter to him what they knew, he was tired of living a lie. He lost his fiancee, Mary, when he told her, who was the love of his life yet he felt he had to be honest with her. (do you think you can love me and leave me to die. Oh, baby, don't do this to me baby) He was crushed and sometimes wished he had never been born. So not a literal physical killing but a socially killing experience. Everyone loved Freddie anyways, he was his worst judge.
You have to remember that 50 years ago people were not as compliant or understanding with peoples feelings when it came to gay people as they are now.
Maybe that will give you a bit more to think about and it could make more sense to you.

People often think hes saying his mother killed a man but hes actually telling his mother that HE just killed a man. Hey mom...just killed some dude, threw it all away for nothing, gotta go, sorry, dont cry, if im not back dont wait up. Then you get a triumphant comback followed by "the truth" he must face which is certain death. (oh and scaramuche was a Court Jester, The fandango is a dance and the lyric is "Bismillah NOO we will not let you go"...because freddy was parsi indian. How amazing is that? Theres also the implication that hes killing himself. His homosexual side of himself. Only to make a comeback to no avail because the truth is we die anyway. "you think you can STONE ME and spit in my eyes?" Stoning is a very specific term to use. Especially being born in Zanibar and raised in India.

Any reaction to this song where the listeners look up to the ceiling right after 'look up to the skies and see' gets an automatic thumbs down. It's an immediate indication they're shallow thinkers and don't take what they're doing seriously.
If you think this song is actually about killing a person, you're wasting everyone's time.
This song formulated in Freddie for about 10 years before being completed in 1975. Do the math ... 2022 - 1975 = 47 years ago. Add that 10 and we're 57 years ago. Think about what may have been happening in that era in the UK and in society in general to influence this song. Add to that the personal life of the song writer. Now add what was happening in the music industry.
This music video and song helped pave the way (and may have been the actual catalyst) for the creation of MTV and launching the music video industry.
