At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

Dang, he didn't find the secret glove box compartment lol
But as an owner, I absolutely love this car. There is no other car that gives you such a rush of adrenaline and happiness. There is nothing better than music with the top down, blasting 9000 rpms on a mountain road.
Well said, but then there are the times that I step into the garage for something and I'm struck by the beauty of the car. This still happens after 13 years of ownership. The S2000 can make me happy without even driving it, but driving it better.
Are you a owner ? 😂
🎉
The S2K is one of the most irresponsible but best decisions of my life
I’m about to make the same decision too
@@DavidsSanity me too
I was so lucky I found a museum quality 2006 With only 40000 miles on it. It was meticulously maintained fully stock right off the showroom Floor quality. Wonderful carfax And meticulously maintained records. Want a beautiful car.
I'll be 70 next month, empty nester, no debts. I sure would like to buy and own one. A red one if I can find one, please.
My red 02 S2K was best decision I’ve ever made…..
Good to see Aussie car media that actually gets what Honda’s are about.
Twin cam VTEC being brought to its stratospheric red line = pure true Love 💕❤️🥰
It's sad how you mentioned you've seen abused S2000s that owners have left the roof down, they don't deserve them 😥
It’s a car bro, they made thousands
the only place i ever see them are in the bad parts of town
Well said, a lot of people unfortunately do not end up respecting a car properly that they have especially if they are not a car enthusiast. You see so many JDM cars not being respected properly and going to waste.
@@MrInternFTL you just don't understand, yes it is a lump of metal and plastic etc, but the effort to make a fun driving car with a company letting their best group of engineers really make something that they want to make and put their heart and soul to it is rare. That's why the S2000 and a lot of other sports cars are not for everyone, but if you are a enthusiast some cars are more than just cars, even more if you don't have hundreds of thousands to put into a car.
I really enjoyed your visceral, emotional reaction to this car. I own a 2001 model, and have had every thought and feeling you expressed.
Dude this is my dream car from my teenage years. Very nice.
THanks fo this!
You've forgotten the secret compartment which will now thankfully remain, a secret compartment
Hard to believe that the S2000 is 20+ years old as it still looks relatively modern lol.
Now I'm wondering which car is worth more; your WRX Adam or the S2000 you reviewed in this video lol.
Noticed a few subtle changes to the video format which I have to admit has improved it over the last 2 you've done with this new format. Also had to laugh at a few things in the video too.
Good work guys and congrats on breaking 96k subscribers as show your hard work is paying off👍.
Again good work guys and as always have a safe weekend and look forward to bext weeks batch of videos 👍
Three years back I nearly had to give away my 99 gc8 and gf8. Nobody was interested. The gc was in exceptional condition too.
after i bought mine, i discovered it had been thrashed and had to replace everything from the transmission back. honda australia charges like a wounded bull ($7,000 for a new diff!) and many parts are more complicated than you would expect (eg: suspension bushes are pre-fitted to the arms, so you need to replace an entire arm to fix one bad bush)
i ended up spending as much fixing the car as i did buying it! lol but now that everything is sorted, it is a joy to drive :)
side note: toda racing makes and excellent replacement timing chain tensioner.
Owner of an S2000 here, ap1 2001 and i get and average of 10.5 litres per 100km with 255 rear semi slicks. The car had numerous previous owners not that well maintained and is at 222 000km, apart 1 litre every 1000 km everything else everything is absolutely fine. Of alll the other S2000 owners I know my one is the least good one. But it's still really fine. All the info you need is available, all the little problems are really well documented.
I've had one for 21 yrs I think I know more than most about this car... I dont daily drive it but it's one if the best ever built..
Im looking to pick up an ap1 2001 from a friend. Not sure if it is worth it. Could you tell me what the most common problems are. Also what are the pros and cons of owning an ap1?
@@droptopp3479 had mine 17 yrs... I've had ZERO problems ever nothing has failed nothing has worn out.. mine is boosted front mount makes 610 whp I track it I have no issues... I do alot of preventative maintenance but they are awesome.. I also only put 2000 miles a yr on it I also have a FK8 and an EM1..
@@honda4life812 I’m also a FK8 owner and wondering which car do you prefer between s2000 and FK8?
Adam, as soon as I heard you say “lower heater housing seam” I just knew we’d be revisiting that phrase in the bloopers.
Excellent video. You pretty much captured everything about this car, well done.
My mate had one in the 2000s, and very generously let me drive it often (we worked together). So much fun at any speed. Just driving from the office 5km into the city was always a hoot, especially with the top down. As long as it wasn't raining, the top went down! Just crank the heater to max and enjoy the sound 😀 I even put 1000km on it in one weekend road trip on winding country roads. Bloody brilliant car. I miss that car, and my mate.
i have had mine for 10 years and very happy
I’m the second owner of a Silverstone 2004 that came with the original factory hardtop. I purchased the car in 2012 (68,000). It’s now a decade later with 98,000 miles on it. Absolutely LOVE THIS CAR! Well maintained and garage-kept. It remains completely stock and I have no intention of ever selling! Keep in mind that they only produced 66,000 of them. My other car is a 2013 Camaro. Having a blast with both! I had also previously owned 3 Miatas at different stages of my life.
The sound of VTEC never gets old 👍👍👍.
Great review as always 👏 I forgot about those awesome cars Honda used to make (Prelude,Integra,CRX and S2000) They looked the part to unlike the bland boring stuff they currently turning out...
Seeessshhh what area were test driving around at approx 1.53 in the background was that all one house....
I love that you reveiw such a wide range of different cars....I know this would be super hard to get a hold off but it would be crazy if you could review a Honda S660...its just so quirky...Recently when I was car hunting there was one sitting at a car yard in Granville but there was no one around....
I own a 2001 AP1 and its just right for me. Top down with an aftermarket exhaust is just amazing (especially in tunnels). The drawbacks I'd give it as an owner are: noisy cabin (rattles and such). If you're above 6ft tall or a more heavier set person then you will have problems fitting inside. Power is limited but can still compete with the BRZ's and Miata's. Turbo or supercharger kits run from $6k-$10k depending if you do it yourself. Then there is the price; I got mine for $13k plus interest so $17K (four years ago) with high mileage (115k). The money they're going for now is insane and idc how low mileage it may be because the price points now are in territories of cars with much more to offer in terms of power, accessories, and warranties! So buy with that in mind... All in all I love it and drive it as much as possible, just you and the peddles (no traction controls here :))
The price of them are continuing climb as clean low mileage examples become rare and as newer cars become more and more numb. Any older car that provides any driving experience is increasing in value as it no longer being produced
love your work, keep it up! 🔥
I used to have one back in 2008 and honestly, it's probably the best car I have ever had. And I've had a lot of cars over the years. But, ultimately, it didn't suit me. I was too tall and didn't fit in properly. The engine does need revs to move fast. And I always drove with the roof up because I got sunburnt like crazy in summer.
How tall are you? Ive thought about trading in my mustang for an s2000 but have been hesitant cause I am 6’1”
@@user-tw6ff7sk8p I'm the same height as you but it also depends on your body type. For me, it was too tight, the steering wheel was too low right in my knees. But I would suggest to sit in one and see if it suits you.
Great video and nice car! The voiceover on safety tech is hilarious!😂
As someone who daily drove an S2k for almost 10 years all I can is yes, buy one! You will not regret it whatsoever! I still go through withdrawals after selling it 3 years ago. Even the newer WRX couldn't measure up to it terms of pure driving pleasure and got rid of that for a truck.
Haha thank you! I have literally been contemplating trading my 2017 WRX for one of these! Needed to hear this
Is this a good first car? I have an opportunity to buy a 56k miles AP2 for 10k.
Hi redriven. I saw your review vids and they are very good. You go into deltail and actually pick out a persons cars to see what common things or problems to look out for. Can you do a review on a 08 mazda cx7? luv the work and effort, kp it up!!!
Literally the cheapest S2k I've ever seen was $15k back in like 2018 and it was in really bad shape. Every one I've seen since has been at least $25k USD. Wish I could get one.
I like the new format and subtle changes to your video presentation. Also, keeping it a little shorter. 15 minutes vs 25-30 minutes is a nice change.
Go look at Cars and Bids they sell pretty cheap there. Decent ones selling for less than 20k
Got one that wasn't in the best condition in 2014 for $6k (USD). Completely restored it. People think it's a new car. It turns heads literally WHEVER I go.
@@sdlausen1 damn, you're lucky. I wasn't even a car enthusiast back then.
@@logandeering7947 *decent ones*
Wait a few months for the recession.
Not even a question. These cars are truly amazing
Test drove 3, very glad I did. One of the most exciting cars that can be truly enjoyed under the Aussie speed limits. I had a PPI done on one I was close to buying but a heap of red flags were revealed. Fun cars but buy carefully.
What problems did a PPI find for you?
@@samartz broadly speaking, I recall extensive repainting observed under the body and a repair of one of the corners suggestive of past crash damage to that wheel and associated suspension/strut setup.
The lack of any traction or stability control plus drivers with more ambition than ability mean a lot of these car sadly end up in a ditch.
Don’t get me wrong though: they present a very pure driving experience due to the lack of electronics too
@@neelparmar6690 Great to hear! Cant wait to own one on a 2nd car
@@samartz would be brilliant for that. I think I dream of doing the same some day
beard is looking great bro!
The Honda S2000 ROCKS
Brought one back in 2017 for 7500 it had high mileage but it still drives like new the owner took pretty good care of it I still own it and drive it only on the weekends top down of course
Brilliant review
Thanks!

You forgot to tell them about the secret storage compartment
He obviously doesn't know about the Secret Compartment and that's a good thing because it's a Secret !!!
This is how you tell the owners from the non-owners.
I own one and fnt know about the secret compartment because its been taken out for roll cage n buckets
Hi Adam, you need to review the Megane RS behind Jim
Mom bought one back in 2004 out of spite when my dad was cheating, best decision she ever made and they still have it.
Dad was offered 15k cash in a grocery store parking lot like 7 years ago. Thankfully he was smart enough to hold on to it.
Would love one!
I have a 2006 s2000 and a 93 mr2 turbo I love them both
I picked one up about 6 months ago here in Texas for a steal. I'm really happy with it, i took a bit of a gamble getting it off a 16year old kid. But checked the Carfax, and had it inspected before purchase and everything checked out. He was gonna lower, supercharge it, etc. so im glad i could save this one.
My s2k had 240,000km and was amazing, best driving experience only to be surpassed by my na1 nsx. You forgot one very crucial fault with the first gen f20c - cracked valve retainers. Left unchecked they can drop a valve and grenade the engine. Big chur from new Zealand, if you ever want to review a nsx in nz on some mountain roads 👍
192k miles on my 2001. NO major problems. Just regular maintenance
I've always wanted an S2000.
I drove a mate's 12 years ago.... so much fun with the top down.
They rev so high, but they are ridiculous in price now.
Also, very hard to find one with no aftermarket mods on it.
I was looking to buy one of these 8 years ago and thought I’d wait for prices to fall…..
Fucking mistake….
One of the best drivers cars ever produced. It will go down in history.
This or a 1st gen 86/BRZ? 86/BRZ is slower but with an aftermarket header and a tune, I think they’d be pretty even. I’ve been following your videos for a while now, great work. Good luck with cracking 100K subscribers. 🤠👍
Depends on what you look for. Daily driving? 86. Hardcore fun? S2000 any day.
A sublime car, reviewed by a sublime presenter, on a sublime CZcams channel 😁
Awww, you’re far too kind
My dream car next to the mustang, I just wish they weren't so highly priced right now so I could buy one...
Best owner ever. Nice ride.
S2000 is my final car, if I sell I’m done with cars. It truly does everything from a experience perspective better then any other car in terms of sports and enthusiast drives
This was an excellent review, but AK, Jim and Co, can we please get a review of the Holden Tigra?
If they’re even able to find one! It’s such a rare car that didn’t sell in large numbers when new - only a couple left on CarSales rn. Maybe the larger Astra convertible might be more popular but even then they’re hard to find and I doubt many would be able to even get one in the used market.
Drove one in the winter, slipped into a channel along the same road. Had to climb out a sinking car and swim to shore. Come to think of it, it was in februari...
No AP2’s were sold in Australia. The AP2 designation (VIN) is unique to the F22c engine (which wasn’t sold here)
Well there you go
That is simply not the case. The AP2 designation applies to all updated S2000s as outlined in the video.
@@skilgour44 Nope. Look on any 2004 onward model s2000 with the F20c and you’ll see an AP1 VIN. This holds true throughout the world.
Mine's an AP1.5. In Singapore, which is similar to Aussie (RHD), the agent used the AP2 bodies, but used back the AP1 engines. It still retains the 9,000 RPM limit, but our VIN is still AP1. But when I look/source for parts, they are all under AP2.
Could you maybe take a look at the old M240i now that the new one is out?😊
Offcourse you should! S2000 is a blast to drive and after 20 years still a beauty!
Crikey, almost 100k subs
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
Love that you mention Grindr not just tinder, because yes gays do drive cars and do like watching car reviews to relate to
😅
Awsome video, very informative. Only thing is, there’s an issue with the ap1, the valve retainers have to be replaced to a ap2. They tend to break.
My friend has 243K miles on his 02 S2000 and has never replaced his AP1 retainers, I think that is highly exaggerated unless you turbo or supercharged it.
@mickeyhartsell6096 Not exactly exaggerated. its just way less forgiving for high rev mis shifts than ap2 retainers
If you can find (a good) one, hell yes.
not a Honda fan in anyway... but the S2000 was/is a work of art... Honda should put it back into production as is... maybe just widen the paint palette.
Great video! Mines for sale for anyone to enjoy. Most fun you’ll ever have with 240hp. I would turbo it but it’s just too nice. 55k Kms all original garage queen.
Where r u based ?
I have one and i am happy.
Great to hear
These are more rare than a type r and that in my book is a win itself 🏆
The s2000 is holding its resale value really well
I was going to buy an AP1 back in 2004, it was being sold for $13k but I didn't get it because it has 100k miles on it. Boy do I regret that decision.
As a recent purchaser of a 2000 s2000 with 58k miles, coming for a 2021 mach 1. I fully endorse the purchase, be smart make sure you check the car out underneath, the history, drive it etc and so forth. Understand that parts for these cars are not cheap especially the k20 engine lol. If you have AP1 and don't plan to go on the force induction route just expect about 3k for 30 whp
I gotta ask, what made you trade in from a mach 1?
It doesnt have a k20, it has the F20 motor.
They are great cars. Ive had my 2004 ap1 facelift for 6 years and not really had any problems. The facelift ones didn't suffer the oil loss wither. I now live in Germany and have had mine sat at 7000 rpm for 3 hours solid and it didnt drink a drop of oil even though its got 180k kms on it. If you can get one do it. On and itll do 226kmh in 5th in the limiter and had it up to 246kmh but it was crawling by then but had olenty of revs to go
Oh..that sound really good..what revs did you go too?..you said 9000 redline but not sure that’s what you hit?
I have a 2017 Abarth 124 limited edition ..it’s no S2000 but still a heap of fun.
The Abarth 124 is hectic...I got my last car tuned at Zadtec in Brookvale (Sydney) and they do alot of Abarths in general but the 124 they did is crazy....
A lot of people are unaware that there was a 2.2lt engine available for the O/S markets..OZ never saw that..
Right. The F24 motor came to the USA with the AP2. Same HP, a smidgen more torque, and 8200 redline. I've not driven an F20 example, but mine has enough beans to be fun with 6k shifts, just before VTEC kicks in.
Hoping Honda does a new S for its 75th anniversary !!!
Wonderful thing if you are very careful and have Pilot Sports on it plus know how to handle lsd. Much more room and seat lower than a Mx5. Latest mx5 passenger leg room is silly and who wants to look at the sunvisor. No comparison although they go well. Review also left out electric steering and fabulous minimalist speedo and rev graph. Modern suv cars with tachos..ha. lastly while the cam change at 6000 is magnificent and you just have to give it a bit into 3rd too (hullo officer) its very difficult to say you are enjoying 8000 rpm and down to 5k up to 7 etc through a proper 55kph 70 kph type 5 km of uphill corners. With a helmet on maybe but if you have any mechanical sympathy it feels wrong even though its ok. I had a JCW at same time and its hard to beat low rev turbo grunt plus forgiving handling. Got a ticket for unsafe passing in yellow top down s2000 as didnt change down to put 7000 up as would have frightened two old bowlers in Falcon....doh. Gearbox snick 2 to 3. Buzzy clutch be $5000 and need genuine. All above still trumped by that fabulous on to motorway run up to 9000 , up to 9000 up to. ...ooops brake!!!
Honda Accord 8th generation next !
DUDE - you missed the secret glove box immediately above the between seat glove box. Check for it, it's there. Opens up. (at least 2001 has it, guess 1999 has it too)
I’m in the minority. I have a friend that has one. I respect the car and it’s a great piece of engineering. That said, I don’t track my cars and the lengths that one needs to go to to extract performance from an S2000 means that you gotta drive it like you stole it. I tire of that quite quickly. I own a gr86 and a boxster. Two totally different flavors but both make their power in ample amounts at midrange and then also reward you if you wind them out. It’s the first bit about the midrange that means that you don’t spend a majority of your time at redline.
Good review and I appreciate that the narrator speaks to how one can appreciate the mechanical goodness of the s2000 when you’re not going fast. I too can see how that may hold appeal, but the torque deficit at most anything lower than 5-6k would be frustrating to me.
Add to that - the engineering prowess of peak Honda can allow one to contemplate an older car with a hard past, but it’s still a machine. I am above average as it relates to my need for the car to work consistently……don’t need another headache in my life.
Having said that, I’m sure I’ll change no hearts/minds. The s2000 has earned a legion of rabid fans. More power to them, I say.
I had a 2000 S2000 for 4 years, 60K to70K ran it on RE003 Bridgestone and later on AP2 17" with RE003; I loved it in the Adelaide hills but disappointed with the lack of torque and need to rev it to 7-9K to really enjoy. Moved up to a stock MX5 NB SE Turbo which was lighter, turned in and handled better and had a more useable power band.....also on RE003 Tyres. Currently running in a 2022 BRZ which will outperform the S2000 and the MX5 SE. I also run a 5 Speed Manual MR2 Spyder with Tein Springs, 17" wheels extractors and 2" System which at 995KG is better fun to drive than both the S2000 and the MX5 SE and at a fraction of the price. Had an stock NA MR2 SW20 always nervous about loosing the rear; also a great MR2 AW11 with a modified exhaust, upgraded wheels and suspension, as much fun to drive as all others. Sorry to say but particularly at the asking prices the S2000 are simply overrated; if you are keen to buy then be aware of the "clutch buzz" in the earlier units (clutch springs were upgraded in 2001,also check all engine and diff mounts. If you are looking for real fun, amazing handling and performance look for an MX5 SE and upgrade the tune and exhaust etc; well under $30K.
Should you buy an S2000? Well once you hit the redline on a quiet road then you haven't really much of a choice on the matter have you...? 😁
yup
I bought my '00 in perfect condition in '09 for $10k usd and I still have it to this day
Also, You missed the biggest storage compartment in the car and
AP1's are for real drivers, AP2's are for old people and girls
Like all journalists, he did not find the 2nd. secret storage compartment between the seats, only real owners know about that one........Btw good review....
I would love to buy one but I'm not spending new car prices for an old used one
If it is gonna be your only car and you need practicality, no do not buy an s2k. If you have a daily driver and have funds for a weekend car, yes.
I had drive one 3-4 years ago. Looking to buy something for me. Absolutely beautiful car but slow. Believe is slow. I couldn't believe it. Of course here in aus they sell it on the roof and most of them are rubbish.relax a little bit with the jdm scene . Ok has some good cars before 20 years but relax with the prices.
7:49 Gotta remove the detachable antenna when putting on the car cover. That thing is flaccid lol
About 4 years ago I looked at buying an S2000, but instead bought an MX-5 nb 2.5 sport and took it BBR in Brackley to have it turbo charged. Alomh with some suspension and brake upgrades I opted for the 2.5" stainless full exhaust system with sports cat. This lifted the car from 142 bhp to 251 bhp (similar to the S2000). It was an amazing car ! But, I never got the chance to compare it wit an S2000, and the suspension upgrades lowered the car making the sports cat scrape the drive on every entry & exit. Small issues really, but I couldn't help but think the stock S2000 wouldn't have these sacrifices attached to it. Also, whilst the boosted MX-5 is a toal blast, it lacked the style of the S2000. I sold it 2 years later, but here I am pondering another roadster......but which one.
NC MX5 mate. With a few tasty mods, hugely underrated thing. - AK
Easy $30-35K+ for a nicely kept model in the US! As much or more than they cost brand new!
Yike I think I’ll be looking at a BMW instead
"if you have a lot of money to splurge? yes!"
My dad said if he had the money he would buy it. Im praying he does.
I want to buy another one but can lie I’d rather have more space and newer tech
I wish it had a 3.5ltr v6. It is severely underpowered but it is an ok fun car
You missed the secret compartment in the interior when looking at storage.
You forgot the glovebox aka secret compartment
Still waiting for the 10th gen Honda Civic...
Yeah, even my ap2 is gutless down low and kinda sucks driving it in town. At a track event or favorite road, it's great.
As for the range of ‘front engine mid engine cars, you missed the 928
They’re selling me one for $6000, clean title. Has front end damage, alignment needs fixing. Fender is scraped and headlights are crooked. Hood and fenders are not aligned… should I work a deal? Or leave it alone… could always work the price
do you even valve lift, bro?
For all of the marvels that Honda's engineering department has dreamt up and put into production, equally incredible is just how quickly management has managed to take Honda from a premium car brand to something that barely rivals Nissan and Toyota on the scale of inspiration. The S 2000, The Integra, The Prelude and of course the NSX have all been sent to the grave, prematurely, In my opinion. Why? Honda were at the top of their game with these vehicles. And they sold well!
Would I like an S2000? Yes, certainly, but at the prices that vendors are asking for them today, I'll take an MX 5 thanks.
By the way, our family has had at least one Honda car in it for the last 37 years! Great cars but Honda no longer has any foresight.
Not through any fault of their own. Cars suck now. All brands. Blame regulations, not Honda .
My friend...we live in a diff world with diff regulations. We totally took our times for granted. The world as we knew it has collapsed. Automobile manufacturing has changed. Choose a size you want(with zero design inspiration)....pick your turbo engine tune(likely same exact engine across the board) and try to look past all the BS. I have an AP1 S2K and I'm pretty sure there will never be another like it so I'm planning to hold on as long as I can. 9K is an emotional and rare experience.
@@pbmcgme176 I get what you're saying but Honda's range has shrunk to something that fits on the back of a postage stamp. I was always critical of Honda for not having a commercial range when every other Japanese manufacturer had at least some offering. I forgave them on the basis that Honda filled a niche that the others didn't. They no longer fill those niches. I don't think that you can blame regulations for that. Cut and paste automotive platforms and engines are nothing new but Honda isn't even achieving that, anymore.
Forgive the pun, but they've been asleep at the wheel for the best part of fifteen years with no sign of waking any time soon. It is as if they don't want to build cars at all.
I'm a closet Honda fan. I wish no ill will on the brand. I'm just disappointed. I would have loved to have thrown my mid life crisis at a new S2000 (Mrs. permitting!) Maybe an Integra? But it's not going to be the case.
Rest assured that I'm envious of your ownership of the S2000. For me, I'm going to have to be content with my old Civic and Mazda ute for a while yet.
Please do a ford Mustang GT

Hold it flat Mat Love
With these cars being 20 years old things will perish with age. What I mean is that all the rubber parts, bushes & suspension components will be up for replacement.
This will leak just because of age. So be prepared to spend a reasonable amount of money going over the entire car. They are reasonably reliable mechanically if they have been serviced regularly. If it’s missing service records be very very cautious. Even if you don’t drive many kms a year change the oil every 5000kms or at least once a year. They are so highly strung these engines.
Is like all sport cars just only buy it from old people, they take care of their cars.
