Why I Sold My Supercharged M3 for a Honda S2000, And Couldn't Be Happier (9,000RPM Noises Inside)

- I used to own a track prepped, 625bhp supercharged E92 BMW M3. I sold that and bought, amongst other things, a 240bhp "gutless" Honda S2000. I couldn't have been happier, so let's talk about why.

So refreshing to see a CZcamsr just buy a car and not do the whole Shmee pre reveal/reveal/go back and reveal again then an update reveal/reveal from when getting serviced blah blah blah
Because most of them are cunts. Jay is not
Scott Irving or supercars of London, buy it, wrap it, put an exhaust on it, sell it 😴 I feel like shmee has made his cars in the same place video for the first time 15 times 😂
Ha...!!! Lmao...
True...!!!
True. Nuff of the poser BS please. Those aren't real petrolheads IMO.
@@ahemgee9542 I used to think so aswell but it's BS. You don't have to drift a car or push it to the topspeed to be a true petrolhead. Some petrolheads only like the mechanicals of cars and they are not even into driving but just like to work on cars. For example if you watch Jay Leno videos, sometimes he couldn't be more passionate when he's talking about a car but the driving parts of his videos are such garbage and I've never seen him go fast so he wasn't a petrolhead in my eyes until I learned more about the internals and started to get interested in what he can teach me about mechanics.
I regulary drive fast on the autobahn, therefore when someone who owns supercars drives them slower than I drive a goddamn minivan or bus this obviously raises some questions, but if I imagine myself owning as many cars as Jay Leno I would probably take less risks and drive slower, too, since I would have much more to lose then.
So petrolhead-elitism is wrong but I desperately need some type of indicator for the different types of car-videos or petrol-heads, like all I need is POV driving no stupid vlog or facecam during the drives, but imagine how hard it is to find and seperate channels in the pile of garbage we call automotive journalism on youtube. I'm just glad these f***ing useless youtube staff members have finally given me a feature to block channels from my feed so I no longer have to scroll past those stupid shmee videos every goddamn time I open youtube. I guess that's why I became a petrolhead-elitist before recognizing the bigger picture, because those stupid kids spending dads money were just abusing cars to get exposure for their stupid vlogs, to become celebrities, to show off, etc. and after the youtube-blocker was no longer working there was no way to remove that garbage which annoyed the hell out of me from my feed. So it's easy to discredit their passion but being a petrolhead is not all about being a fast driver and you can actually be a petrolhead while being an attentionwhore, you might be an annoying person and your content will steal valueable views from more relevant/passionate channels but you're still a petrolhead.
Aesthetically I think the S2000 is one of the best aging cars I've ever seen. 17 years old? It looks half that quite easily.
__ because the design is so simple and it’s design keeps the philosophy of a true sports car looks to its purists form. Long bonnet, short rear, simple lines. All makes are car look timeless
Dead right! It looked great at the time and still does. Instant classic
It because the in-wheel suspension causes everything to be pulled over the mechanicals. I wish Honda would release a new generation OEM LED headlight set.
@@TheQueenslander97 That coupled with honda going against the whole bubbly round shape most cars at the time were going for really has helped it stand on its own for the past 2 decades. Honestly if they did a new S2000, an S2020 if you will, the main thing theyd have to do to the exterior is slap on some daytime running lights and sharpen it a little and "Voila!" a modern looking vehicle!
Alright, this is gonna get lost in the comments but I always thought that even fresh out to showroom you could always tell a car was from the 90s or early naughties. Not just the external styling but because of the perceived quality and visual robustness. An group of characteristics you can't necessarily describe but can use to tell a modern day car is a new car and an old one is an old one.
Well, certain Hondas in particular from the early naughties can pull off a much newer, more modern look very well that other cars from the era couldn't. The DC5 being one of them, the S2000 probably another and hell, even some Japanese minivans (as ridiculous as that sounds).
I'm finally at the stage in life where I don't buy or do things for other people's approval and it's wonderful!
It is liberating… I always say why try to impress others when, at the end of the day, the only person that really makes a difference, is me. Enjoy!
I’ve owned several Porsche, Lotus, AMG, BMW and the S2000 is the car I’ve most loved.
My old 997 was better, but only just. Wish I knew the roads I know now though. I also crashed the shit out of mine🙄 😂
@Joe H haha how did you guess.. I was in a bad mood that day. Overtook at speed and ran out of braking room. Car became unsettled and lost control. I was a lot younger! Also I knee virtually nothing about cars and the geo and tyres were probably not 100% 😐
I sold my 3rd gen RX7 and picked up a second gen MR2. Girlfriend bought the ND Miata. I miss the RX7 but not the upkeep. Considering an NC, but have liked the E89s for some time. I always disliked the convertible strangely the Supra seems to have answered that complaint transmission aside. I'm thinking an e85 coupe might be more my style. RX8 and S2k populate the list as well. Do you have any experience with these by chance. Also have a weird itch for a Merkur, E30, or 190e project car. I think the e89 is the real outlier on the list
Fluterra.. wow that says a lot about S2000 then.
I traded a newer C63 AMG for a '99 BMW M Coupe, I think similar in concept to this with the S2000. It's a huge difference, and very fun! Love the S2000s also.
At last you found out what you have been missing in the old UK roadster mentality. The whole idea of light weight cabrio that the brits started decades ago is exactly what an s2000 does and it does it extremely well
@Harry Monkfish my ap1 s2000 is exactly 1200 kg...
@Harry Monkfish compared to them yes its heavier. But both the Elise and the mr2 mk2 are very very plain cars inside.. Especially the lotus is like a kart..
@Harry Monkfish agreed. Compared to a BMW M3 by the way its very light though 😂
How is your SW20 915kg? Listed weight for the turbo is around 1200kg
@Harry Monkfish one of your earlier comments mentioned that you had a mk2 mr2. 3rd gen makes more sense!
Since 2010 I own my 2002 S2000 and I still love it.
The driving experience is so great.
People that only look at the horsepower and torque specs and buy a turbocharged hatchback, don't understand the S2000 and will miss the feeling what this car has to give.
To be honest, if it would be my daily driver and only car I would not buy it.
But as a second car for the fun miles it is almost unbeatable in that pricerange.
i drive a yellow honda beat and i know exactly what you're talking about. driving a slow car fast is the best way of having fun every damn day and not get into trouble.
A s2000 is not slow.
@@Franko384 It's all relative.
Sold my S2000 when I went back to university. My god I miss that thing. Thanks for expressing all the good thoughts!
when you're done with school how will you drive back to home
U fool , never will I
The best opening sequence and what driving is all about
Agreed.
I almost bought an S000 back in 2001, but decided to go for something more "useful" isntead....
Sigh, this video remidned me that I had the chance to buy one a few times for excellent prices, but by now here at our car market good S000s go for around 20k euros and upwards.
Which they are worth, mind, but that makes them less likely to be bought In the moment"....^^
Sounds f**king epic....
What Lawnmower sounds like this? I want one
@Blackporsche roadsterczcams.com/video/QawADgNLLtA/video.html
N/A V8 M3 sounds LOT better. He ruined the sound (and drivability) by adding a supercharger.
@@LifeStartsAtrpm Thats your opinion. The honda will always sound better than an European V8.
The M3 does not sound better than an S2000. Dream on.@@LifeStartsAtrpm
Agree. I owned my S2000 for 7 years and most drives were sweaty palms. Very exciting car even though not that powerful by todays standards. I'd certainly have another
Of course, we are biased but this is FANTASTIC!!
Hard to go wrong with an S2000, Jay! I'm a fan of pretty much anything that is lightweight, small and agile and the S2000 is one of the best of that lot. Enjoy it!
I had this exact AP1 Spa Yellow S2k. From a performance/fun/reliability measurement, it was the best car I ever owned. I DD it in the sun, rain and snow and put 168k miles on it before stupidly letting it go. In that time the only drawback in terms of maintenance was the cat converter outer casings would rust out (the only part on the SS exhaust that wasn't) and start rattling loudly, which required their replacement twice. Other than that, it's as bullet proof as any 90's Civic, and I drove it HARD...so hard the rev limiter filed assault charges against me. The transmission/gear box in this is easily one of the best ever made and like you said, every control is within fingers reach without even needing to take you hand off the wheel. People who say you can't DD a S2k are crazy. It's a comfortable place to be and nowhere near as bruising as an M3, a Miata or even a solid rear Mustang of the same era. I've taken mine on many a day long trip and the seats are comfortable and supportive enough that I never felt stiff like I had from other much less sporty vehicles. If you ever reach the day when you decide to sell yours, you'll regret it, trust me.
Shades of Le Mans* in the intro!
One can tell you learned your craft, unlike other CZcamsrs.

It's a stunning movie
Watch Le Mans then watch ford vs Ferrari and weep. The way the cars are shot and the engine sounds in Le Mans are utterly amazing. FvsF looks like a computer game in comparison. All the sense of scale is lost. The cars look small and slow. Le Mans is a masterpiece. And those engine noises. Lordy I will be in my bunk.
Love how genuine this channel is, also love an s2k!
So glad you have 1 and enjoy 1. Many months ago I asked you about s2000 when you were helping your friend buying his first sports car you mentioned Nissan 350Z due to its V6. I’m a proud owner of my ap1. Looking forward to your upcoming videos.
I miss my S2k. I had one from 2003 to 08. Fantastic bloody car.
Me too, why did I sell it :(
I was made redundant and chose to sell the car, pool the cash and piss off around the world for a year :D
Since coming back to Edinburgh I've never owned a car again because I don't need one (and the cost is nice to not be a thing. And parking.).
I do miss being able to piss off to GlenCoe for lunch, mind

I think it’s the perfect car. Honda reliability v tec and a brilliant chassis.
This man knows what he’s doing.
Congratulations Jay, on your new toy. Sounds like it’s just perfect for you right now and I hope you continue to enjoy it just as much
That pure uninterrupted engine vocalisation intro is sublime
Welcome to the club, and thanks for upping my resell.
Amazing sound and love that you have segments where its nothing else but you flooring it
Great video. This video really brightens my day, especially with the engine note. There’s something to be said about a “happy” car like this.
Excellent - looking forward to this series!
really liking your thought process....and once again the honesty in your reflection and communication...thanks
S2000’s are AMAZING. I’ll never sell mine
You'd be crazy if you did sell it.
@@TheDalitis8 Funny enough, I’ve been debating selling it to buy a CR edition s2000. That’s fair right?
@@SendItMediaCo That is more than fair. I own a DC5 Type R, and I would only sell it if it meant it would be replaced by a good condition S2000.
Same here, AP1 75k miles 2 years ago for $12k. Silver with red interior. I'm obsessed with it.
@@TheDalitis8 Random update! I ended up buying a GPW CR back in July & loving it!
That intro was eargasmic...!!!
👂💘
Most intoxicating intro ever. Beautiful car that. I love cars that were less interrupted by technology and really focused on the driving experience. Good job.
Fantastic review. Love the exhaust system sound.
Great video Jay, quite timely for me too..I always felt you had similar tastes in cars to me and I'll be getting a "forever" car soon and felt I would probably go NC MX5 BBR Turbo, but this has given me some food for thought. Thanks for sharing 👍
Best car channel on CZcams period. Keep going sir! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Got my s2000 ap1 2003. I’ve had it for 6yrs now and still puts a smile in my face everytime i drive it!!!!
that intro was great to watch thank you👍🏼
Fantastic explanation with a new refreshing perspective on my favorite car I've ever owned... Been through a lot as well my dude.
Glad to see this back on the channel been looking forward to it. I had an e92 m3 and echo the same thoughts. Dull as dishwater. Sold for an integra DC5 and it was an absolute riot to drive in comparison.
Great opening. As I’ve said before, you capture and use sound brilliantly. Well played.
Thanks Joss
congrats on your new car! its really rare to get an s2k nowadays
please look after it and restore it to the most original state
Really looking forward to seeing what you have in store for it buddy. Big Honda fan here.
Great choice, been looking at these myself for similar reasons - just bought an M4 Comp and whilst I love it, having fun isn't easy given road limitations. I think honest youtube channels like yours will stay the course, too many now are exercises in buying/exiting exotic cars with finance deals that the "owner" clearly cannot afford.
It really is a special car. My grandfather has one and it always makes him so happy to get it out when i'm there. It's good that you got what YOU wanted. Be different than the other youtubers.
Had to watch this because of the M3 part in the title. I've owned my S2000 for around 5 maybe 6 years now and can't let go of it! I have however bought an E92 325i for my daily commute, at least for this winter to keep the S2 nice :)
Finally someone who appreciates the vtec low cam for what it is and does. You’re spot on when you said something along the lines of other CZcamsrs not actually liking their cars and that they are more worried that other people do instead.
I love when you change the route from point a to point b solely on the fact that you will engage vtec more times on the second route.
The first minute alone made this video worth watching.
great video man. I was torn between the c5 corvette and this for my secondary, and came across this video in my binge; and I think you confirmed my decision. That interior is just so special and you can have so much fun (without getting pulled over or crashing lol)
It looks real fun especially with that kind of driving road Nice content
This is EXACTLY why I just bought an Evo 5. Pure driving pleasure in all weather! Especially on Norfolk B Roads!
Congrats on the new purchase. Hoping it has a long and happy life with you.
Me too!
Congrats Jay, had one for more then 10 years, still regret selling it, great car, every vtec rev puts a smile on your face.
One of the best cars I had 🙌 glad you enjoy it :)
That engine reving so high in the vtec range in the intro was just orgasms in my ears !!! Woooo yo
Absolutely adore the S2000. An AP2 with a Spoon hardtop has been a dream of mine for a while now, bloody excellent.
S2K is on my list of cars I need to own! So watching this with interest. My favourite colour for the S2k is yellow also! With a charger and a few choice mods these things are awesome 👏🏼
Charging one of these would require a reduction in compression and peak rpm, wouldn't it?
Rick C No. Go to LHT Performance channel it’s their bread and butter in the US. The stock forged internals of the s2000 handle in easily
Rick C no in wouldn’t, I got mine supercharged at LHT last year, it actually revs to 8450 now instead of 8200, but to be honest I don’t often go there, I still usually stop around 8100/8200...
@@s2kkev292 Im gonna be bringing my S2k to LHT this year. Was it worth it? Im so torn between just buying a type r or SCing my s2k
Rick C & Shawn (below) LHT SC'd our '04 S2K (#51) in April 2018. Dyno'd 396 HP / 274 Lb torque tuned to 91 Octane. No internal changes to engine. It is a little beast!
I've been subscribed to you ever since I saw your Evora vs F355 video and it has been awesome watching your channel grow and change. I genuinely respect your opinion on cars and tend to think we share commonalities on the cars we like and dislike. That's why when I saw your purschased the S2000 I about lost my mind! I'm on my second one now, I've loved the cars for years and it's awesome to see someone, whose opinion I respect, share the same feelings about the car. I quite often think about selling it and buying something different. I've NEARLY bought many cars, from a 996c4s to a Cayman to a M3 to even a GT350 and an aircooled 911. But there's something about the old s2k that keeps me from selling it. I guess I'm stuck with it- its too good a car to let go. Any car I buy in the future will be an addition to the garage as the stook isn't going anywhere. Thanks for another awesome video and though I respect your choice in cars, I decisively disagree on the colors. People, say no to yellow please!
You Sir, made the right choice. I own am AP1 and it just feels great driving her around.
Great vid bud. Car looks awesome in yellow. Hope your taking mimms In April 🤩🤩🤩

My pleasure!
I love your channel! Thank you for reviewing the seventh gen Celica GT-S with the 2zzge motor. I love mine. Might get another one. Very underrated cars.
As others have already said, it’s a tonic to watch you navigate your life with cars in a way we can all relate to. The fact that so much of it is driven by your heart and often chaotic is what makes this such great viewing. You offer something above bigger automotive YTers; all this feels real. I never really know what’s going to turn up next. It’s Danny DC2 / HubNut /Hoovie levels of zero monkeys given, and that’s a really good thing.
Cheers, it's what I aim for!

Congrats on the ride. Your point about this being the right car for a certain kind of road is key. You should make a video expanding on that... maybe talking about the best cars for different kinds of roads. I've driven S2Ks and I didn't enjoy them because I live in typical suburban America. If I lived out in the country or mountains I'd love something like this
Can’t believe you are only on 70k subscribers- the time and effort you put into your videos is superb- you have a no bullshit approach and I like the fact you don’t have a oh look at me persona - keep it up mate (btw I’m a BMW fanboy- gutted the SC E92 M3 has gone but love your honesty and understand why it went!)
What a beauty... enjoy it to the fullest!
Really great video, enjoying all the content you are putting out.
Very good Decision as long as the car is the one you like.
You sir have brilliant taste. Congratulations on owning a special car.
Bless you for actually driving the hell out of this car. She deserves it.
You're making me really miss my AP1. I love the MP4-5 style dash btw. I bought a 986 S recently partly based on your review of it. Don't make me have 2 convertible sportscars now! PS I also quite like the NC. We seem to have similar taste
Your Channel is great mate, I couldn't live without a V8 as a Blue blooded Ozzie, also love the Leguna Jacket.

Looking at one of these for the summer (after missing my own Evora). Great choice :D
I'm happy for you too!
Love it James!
Subscribing to see your plans for the car. Love my AP1 and honestly want to get another. Definitely the most fun car I've ever driven. It's so simple, but still has everything you need.
Well done, looks like a great car to me and the 'aural pleasure' it will give you over your time with it will be amazing. I think (funds allowing) people often go through this 'journey' searching for their personal favourite machine. I know I did and the car I have now surprised me also. Don't forget this also changes over time as both your lifestyle and personal preferences (and again funds available) allow. Looking back at some of my 'heart' purchases I often think 'why?' but then the memories they gave me, however brief, will be with me for a while yet and I still chuckle at my decadence realising how fortunate I have been to allow this to happen ...... I look forward to your updates on this machine, complete with all the technical data you can throw at us. Also one point you keep coming back to that rings so true for me is that there is no point having power power power in a car when you cannot use it most of the time on the public roads. Having a vehicle that sounds great, revs beautifully and you can relish changing gear in (for a few more years at least) without breaking the speed limit ids a real joy. Now I am looking forward to the Toyota Yaris GR4 AND GT86 replacement coming soon :)
Good choice! You are in good company, I believe Petrol Ped once had one. This car is like a modern equivalent of the 1960's S800.
I felt the same, I had a e92 M3 and loved the car (not the running costs) but it felt a bit flat most the time, I sold it and bought a cost effective mk5 golf Gti. Never driven one before, but they are so much fun to drive, especially to blast down country roads. Looking at getting another motor in the summer Honda S2000 will be on the list of cars to check out. Great vid mate 👍🏻
Nice ,you'll love it,I've had my ap1 for 11 years, just passed 243k,have fun bro!

Enjoyed the video. Thinking of getting an S2000 myself. Richard
The S2000 is truly one of Honda's best and most special vehicles. It perfectly represents the spirit of Honda and everything they stood for at the time of its development. I own a 2006 AP2 and can't wait to take it out of storage in the spring! Welcome to the S2k family.
Excellent video! I totally agree: it's much more fun to drive a "slow" car fast, than to drive a fast car slow.
I live in Vermont in the US. We have a great number of good paved twisty roads all around us. I have a 2003 ap1 S2k. I am in love with the car. I keep it mostly stock.
One of the best cars ever made.
I currently own a 2020 BMW M2C. I've had it for a year and it is very capable and I do enjoy it. But, I find myself on occasion thinking about my old 2004 Honda s2000 with the perfect manual gearbox and high revving engine for a quarter of the price. Yes, its much slower but there's something about it that's just very fun. Congrats on the new purchase!
Nice opening piece
Great choice! I’ve had my Toyota 86 for just over 3 years now, making 241bhp and 246nm of torque (doesn’t rev to 9k obviously - jealous!) and I have much more fun than my friends do with more than double the power on the streets, which is where all our driving takes place
