  • Being born with Heterochromia is a rare genetic mutation. Dr. EyeGuy goes over the different types of Heterochromia including Heterochromia Iridum and Heterochromia Iridis, and explains when it can be concerning.
WHAT IS DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO
There are different types of Heterochromia. If you are born with Heterochromia, than you likely have congenital heterochromia, and usually a benign, beautiful condition. If you acquire a different colored eye later in life, then it could be linked with some potential problems and conditions. Different types of heterochromia include: Heterchromia Iridum, complete heterochromia, heterochromia Iridis, partial heterochromia, sectoral heterochromia, or central heterochromia. There are some famous celebrities that have heterochromia as well.

I don’t have it, but I encountered something I had never seen or heard about. Sitting beside me on a flight was a woman whose pupil changed shape. Literally, as you watched it would change shape from round to something like a pentagon. (No lizard people eyes.) Have you ever heard of this?

It had developed a few years earlier (I think she was about 45) and around the time it presented, she was exposed to tear gas during a barricade situation in her apartment complex. I’m retired law enforcement and have never heard of any long term effects, so I don’t know if there is any correlation. She had been to many doctors, but nobody could help her. I'm an African American woman and I have had heterochromia since I was very young. I have one brown eye and one blue eye just like you. I use to hide it by putting a colored contact lens in, but I gave up on that one long ago and just accepted my genetic blessing :) Little children notice my condition the most and when they are bold enough to ask I tell them I'm an x-man lol

As I said, it's very subtle, but I have noticed it. I like it though. It makes my eyes interesting if you care to pay attention to them to actually notice.

Enjoyed your video - thanks! Since you asked for comments - I have central heterochromia... thin yellow/gold inner ring, light blue band and dark grey limbal ring. Sounds great, but the overall color is not very attractive. I am, however, extremely grateful to have healthy eyes! There is definitely a hereditary aspect as my mom had almost the same eye coloring as I but her mom (my grandma) had the most amazing sectoral heterochromia - blue eyes with half of one eye brown. Two brothers with gorgeous brown eyes and a sister with sparkling blue eyes.

Got the Central Heterochromia, never actually knew what it was until recently due to everyone were I live call that type of eye "Cat's eyes". With mine they are a nice dark blue for the outer ring of the eyes and then have a sliver of what could be considered golden color around the iris. Almost spot on similar to the eye used for the example pic.

I also had melanin blotches on my back and stomach when I was born. I never paid much attention to my eye color until my 30's when someone said "your eyes are very interesting". The outer color is blue/gray and around the iris is a mid-brown sunburst. I wish I could post a picture here for everyone.

I have central heterochromia, the example shown at a 1:14 is super close to what my eye looks like! But, even my two eyes Express them differently, from my pupil outward, my left eye goes from a red-brown, to yellow, to green, to blue, to a blackish blue thin ring on the very outer edge. My right from pupil outward goes, brown, light yellow ring, green, blue, and a darker blackish blue thin ring on the very outer edge of my eye as well. The yellow in my left eye seems to be getting brighter and more intense as time goes on. I don't know if that's normal even with people who were born with this. But, the comment that I get the most is "wow! I never noticed how weird your eyes are! Not like that but in a nice way.". Otherwise, I just thought I had Hazel eyes. Hi! I have one blue eye and one green eye! I also have two thin central heterochromia: the blue eye has a ring of a yellowy goldenish colour and the green eye has a brown ring around it!
I was born with blue eyes, and when I was about 2-3 years old they started turning green, and interestingly one changed back and then they have stayed like this!!

I just now found this video, and I have complete heterochromia. My great-aunt on my father's side has it as well; she has one brown eye and one green. My eyes are very different shades of blue, but I also have three color vision deficiencies (I think that's what they're called at least.) so I didn't believe anybody when they told me my eyes were different colors.
One day I was at a non-eye doctor's office and he mentioned it. I said it must just be a trick of the light, and he asked the nurse in the room who confirmed it. When I asked my eye doctor at my next exam, he said he hadn't previously mentioned it because he figured I already knew. He had checked to make sure that I didn't have any problems resulting from my heterochromia, but since I was little I always wanted to tell him about school so he always thought I didn't care to talk about it.

I was born with full heterochromia, one blue one brown. Makeup was always tough. Also blue eyes are very sensitive to bright light so that's always fun! I have 3 children on earth. One with brown eyes, one with blue eyes, and one with green eyes. People always get distracted in mid conversation and say, 'hey, did you know you have two different colored eyes?'... No way, thanks for telling me!! hahahaha yes of course I know, I was born that way! Always makes me chuckle. 😊

I’ve been looking for this info! When I was little I had very obviously blue eyes. As I aged they got darker and became a steel gray. Now, in my thirties, I’ve noticed central heterochromia developing. I now have a ring of gold with brown flecks around my pupils. The gold and gray have now made it very confusing to tell what my eye color is. It can be gray, gray-blue, or gray-green now depending on lighting. I’m pretty sure my grandmother had the same exact development and dealt with cataracts later in life that required surgery. After the surgery, her eyes looked completely green. It was wild!

No one in my family has any eye problems (expect my dad recently got glaucoma), they all have brown eyes because they're east asian, however my left eye is mostly green with few brown freckles and my right eye is full brown. I wasn't born with heterochromia, or had any eye injuries, I didn't even know I had it until my brother told me. Even the doctors were like "wow you're so special" and thing is they don't even know how I got this. They think its genetic mutation but they said they're not sure. And I hate going to the hospital to get my eyes check out and they put weird liquids in my eye. So much lightttt and painful! I can't wear contact lenses cuz I'm too young and its expensive :(
