    To get round any learning curve with Total Mix you can use the DAW mode that routes everything 1 to 1 negating the use of anything in TMFX with exception of the gains. TMFX is very much a digital console built in to your interface and like any other digital console they take a while to learn manufacturers design decisions. I would be upset if RME changed TMFX to make it easier to use if we lost features - is so good! I’m also super excited because of a recent-ish driver update and app release, I can use my RME &iPad to live-mix/track with full control through the iPad meaning I can live mix small, live environment, audio productions with multitracking! SO BRILLIANT! You can learn a DAW in a day, take some time and unlock the mega-power of RME & TMFX

    I cant say I agree that Total Mix is all that complicated for it's basic use and getting up and running. But for the more advanced features like Loopback and assigning software input channels I think the problem is less with Total Mix FX itself, and more with the RME videos not being as clear as they could be(just like you said). Im a power user now for nearly 10 yrs and just this year started using Loopback to it's full potential. I did have to watch the RME youtube videos multiple times and just dive in completely to figure it out. Adrian does a great job on a lot of the videos but i found myself scratching my head on a few of the loopback vids.
    My number 1 tip for a new RME user would be to create the online account in the user group forum. What other company has it's actual owner actively answering questions in the forums???? RME DOES! Both Adrian and Mathias have been active on there for years. At least, I remember Mathias answering my questions in 2012 when I first got my UFX. The forum is the number 1 place to be for answering your questions.
    Great vid Barry. I look forward to your TotalMix vids.

      In TM, always be aware of which output (bottom of the 3 rows) you have selected. The fader settings you see in rows 1 & 2 constitute the submix for the currently selected output, and any fader changes you make in rows 1 & 2 will apply to that output ONLY.
      Also, in row 1 you might see the meter levels changing to show that a signal is being received at that input, but to send that signal on its way you have to raise that input's fader. Again, when you raise a fader on rows 1 or 2, it will affect only the currently selected output.

    Well, gladly there IS indeed a manual for Totalmix! A while back, I bought a Fireface UCX II, and it contains a 40-page description of Totalmix - which is extremely helpful. I assume that this also applies to other audio interfaces by RME. It is well worth someone's time to take a close look at this material. It will be life changing! Having said that: I agree that Totalmix has its own unique logic, which happens to differ substantially from most other such software, and that it takes a bit if time to get used to it. But once one understands it, a whole new world of possibilities opens up! BTW, have I already mentioned how stable and reliable it is? 🙂

    Barry, first off thanks for your work ! If some sort of understandable tutorials where available for totalmix I would probably still be using RME. I used several of there interfaces for years and limped along while totalmix sometimes literally blew up in my face (nobody warned me about those default input settings or that automatic double click to unity ). I loved the quality of the conversion and the stableness. But.... when all I wanted to do was a simple remote overdub totalmix would periodically block me from access to Pro Tools. I would even talk with the guys at RME on the phone and try to get help. They would confidently tell me all about how I could route anything to anywhere at any given point by simply doing about 50 things first.There was no basic pass through option. After years of using RME I realized ALL my down time was related to my not understanding TotalMix so I dropped RME on my last big upgrade and went with Aurora Lynx. It sounds awesome also and has functional default options. I really tried with TotalMix but without proper reference materials it was too frustrating.

    Like many others I did not struggle to understand and use TotalMix FX with my RME UCX II. Immediately after reading the TotalMix guide - which BTW is included in the RME Fireface UCX II User’s Guide in my case - and looking at two or three videos from RME (just to accelerate things…), I was able to work without any issues with the device in my Mac/Logic Pro X stuff. It took me maybe just one day and I am really happy with that buy (which BTW I also have to thank you, Barry, because you were one of the main sources that convinced me about the quality of this device and of the RME solutions and reliability in general 🙏).

    You have nailed the point! I've been using my interface since 2020 and almost 4 years now I can do my hobby (cause that's what it is) after having struggled a lot. And that's just to do the basics. I am not into serious operations. Of course it surpasses everything else I tried, but even today I find it very hard to do things I have accomplished because I simply forgot how. I have made little notes on scrapbooks and then again I have to read them again and again to get into what I did. Then again there is that forum. Whenever I ask something and I describe what I do, I get shouted at, because I do not do what would make my life easier, by doing that and that and that. I get the answer "read the manual". And what they mean by that is "read it from start to end". (Which I have done, without success). I would not call myself illiterate (even though a PhD title I hold would prove the opposite) but I have learnt in this life to use a manual when I need an answer to a specific problem. The basics of an interface should be straight forward. Anyway thanks for your efforts

    Love the idea of simple tutorials for total mix. I'm cool with it, but when they changed it way back when with the fx thing, that threw me for a bit of a loop. I bought a fireface 800 in probably 2005 and eventually upgraded to the Apollo stuff (original, then the 16 channel, then a twin x). The Fireface sat for 10 years and I finally dug it out and hooked it up with a RME ADI2, and low and behold, that almost 20 year old interface still works great and the conversion on the adi2 sounds fantastic. Normal studio still has all the UA stuff, second bedroom thing using the RME stuff and couldn't be happier. That whole thing started by me messing with guitars and liking the sound of the ad converters in my Audient asp880 a lot better than the UA stuff, and I ab'd that stuff for weeks to make sure I wasn't nuts. Then added the adi2 via aes on the appolo 16 mk 2, and was kind of sold on the idea of the adi2. That second "studio" basically has 2 good channels of good ad/da now, and for the most part, that's all I need. So kudos to RME for a lot of reasons. Looking forward to the videos.

It said “failure in bootloader ram error detected” and it never recovered. Its supposedly a problem With the power connection inside the unit. It would/couldn’t connect to total mix and stayed on the error screen after rebooting and Unplugging the interface. I had to send it back. The US technical support is in Florida and they had me send it to them for exchange. Seems to be a common issue and I believe the warranty is 2 years. IMO it’s too expensive for this but is still a stellar product when working just beware tho. Only had it 1 year. Technical support is hard to get a hold of by phone but email was quick and they took car of the issue quickly and sufficiently.

    I've had a love-hate relationship with TotalMix, though it's more a loving relationship now. After using RME interfaces since 2017, including more recently the HDSPe MADI FX with its 192 input and 194 output channels, I can appreciate Total Mix for what it can provide. While it's possible to run Total Mix in Digital Audio Workstation Mode which makes it a lot simpler to use, the power of TotalMix can only be had when it's in Full Mode.
    Since there's a full mixer that can route anything to anything/everything (N to N) with most RME interfaces, I don't know if it would be possible to simplify it by much, though they could probably make some of the UI elements more obvious in the mixer view (i.e. selecting the output for the Hardware inputs and Software playback). As you said, there is a learning curve which does take time since it doesn't work quite the same was as a DAW, but it is similar to a mixing console if it had N to N routing.

  • @CaptainMoto

    Total mix made me crazy for about a week after I set up my RME UFXii.
    I simplified my work flow by changing the "operation mode" to digital audio workstation.
    At the top of the Total mix window select options then operation mode and change it from "full mode to "digital audio workstation mode".
    This removes the middle section, which is called "software playback" (I could not get my head around that).
    The view will change to display only the hardware inputs and outputs.
    Now I'm up and running. Someday I'll dive back in to TM and try to understand the "playback" controls.

    The biggest issues with totalmix that make it such a frustrating piece of software to learn IMO are the lack of tooltips and the lack of clear, obvious visual hierarchy to indicate what is currently active and what is actually being routed. To a lesser extent the graphics of the window are also a big issue as everything is so tiny by default and can only resized in a few massive increments where anything past the second option (135%) is too tall for most screens. Hard to even begin to learn a piece of software when you can barely read the UI without squinting.

    Secondly total mix is not an intuitive software…
    You need to put some times to learn how to harvest to full power of that beast…but once you do it’s just mind blowing
    After I have past these hurdles I must say that I love my rme card/total mix

    I suspect it will be a while till they fix it, but appreciate the video - I do hope they are watching this. Fact is, Total Mix is the only reason I am not considering the RME Babyface. It looks too stressful. Although I do have a hunch that RME, being a pre-internet company (if I’m not mistaken) might not even be fully aware of this problem. A bit like Cubase and the dongle.

    Hi Barry, thanks for your videos! I feel the same way about RME, I have the FF UFX and love it and feel no need to upgrade, though that said, maybe there is a reason to upgrade that I don't see myself, like better DACs or Pre-amps, connections ... ? From the specs I see on RME website, I can't imagine the DACs or pre's being that much better? I feel like pushed towards a new UFX II though I can't find the reason. Have you experience with the original UFX vs your UFX + and found there to be differences worth upgrading ? Thanks! Mario

    I had a Fireface 800 and got the Babyface and Babyface PRO, I don't find the converters to be that good, they are just good. But the drivers and reliability are top notch, and I agree with you, Total Mix is too difficult for newbies and people a bit dumb like me who always struggle to understand connections. I sold my Fireface 800 and got a Prism Sound Orpheus which was less amazing for drivers but much better for conversion, and I switched recently for the Focusrite RED16 Line which is fantastic but for me as difficult to get to understand the app, but I needed the 16 ins/outs and DANTE. Sadly, the Babyface PRO that I only used for gigs to play my tracks in Ableton was stolen in my car and I replaced it with another Focusrite portable interface. So your point is valid Barry, if the Total Mix app was more friendly maybe I would have sticked with RME all along...

    Timely video, Barry as I’ve been looking for a new interface and RME was top of my list. However, after spending time trying to understand Totalmix I decided that RME wasn’t for me.
    It added a complexity that I didn’t need and certainly didn’t want. And it’s not optional, ie you can’t turn it off until you need it. There are some straight through presets (apparently) but I knew that if something wasn’t working properly I would have to get into Totalmix to be sure that wasn’t the issue.
    So, for me and my needs RME was a non-starter purely based on Totalmix. I’m sure for others it may do things that no other interface can - but I don’t know what and it’s not something I need.

    It sounds like total mix works like a more flexible version of uad console software. You can't make the apollos work the way you need for a mid and higher level setup unless you program it. But I hear so much good stuff about rme.

    Being a rme guy for 10 years+ totalMix is easier to understand when you have a bigger unit! . even when I thought I understood stereo mixes , a few months later I realized I didn't/i was wrong.
    perhaps they need videos that are (as I'm typing your saying what I'm writing) oh well I'm sure your videos will be better than theirs!!! But I would never go back to any other type of ROUTER TOTALMIX should not really be changed!!!!!!!!! its a matrix you just gotta get use to.... NO RME JUST KEEP THE DRIVERS WORKING......lol

    What is it that people are getting hung up on in getting an RME interface with Totalmix to work? The first row is all of the hardware inputs, the second row is the audio coming from software, and the third row is your hardware outputs. Clicking on any of the hardware output faders allows you to adjust the input and software levels to that output. I can see how it can be daunting to figure out everything that it can do. But getting started? Especially since you can bail out and use DAW mode if you need to? What's the problem?

    Hay Barry Happy New Year to you and yours I know this is Off topic the recording with hardware Preamps and compressors ECT How would you go about recording with hardware effects. The best practices when using time based hardware effects. How to go about it . Im in the box using motu 16a wired to a patchbay along with my mic preamps compressors EQ I like to leave things setup for example I have 3 to 4 mic's on my cab they go true a mic preamp true an EQ then Compressor Because CLA said so but I'd like to hear how you would go about it on the recording side of things as I play to the effects I'm using Studio one I do have a studio master 16 8 16 gold that I'm recapping the power supply also balancing the sends and returns also modifying the master section. I hope makes sense Thank you for all the great content 👍 CHEERS FROM IRELAND 🇮🇪 BRIAN 😁

    I might be in the minority here, but I feel like i cracked the code very quickly with my UFX+. Similar to you, I struggled to get things set up, but essentially came to the realization that in total mix (and to a different extent, with Antelope audio gear), you must tell the signal where it’s going to go. Once i found that, it all made sense to me. Software playbacks need to be routed to their accompanying hardware output for things to work as expected in the daw context.
    I tried the DAW mode, but ultimately returned back to the full featured mode because I’m more apt to use all the bigger features in the long run.
    One major change i would make to totalMix would be the loopback monitoring function. If we could monitor loopback channels in totalmix instead of the DAW, i would be beyond happy

    you have to understand than rme functionalities is based on its internal fpga chip. how fpga works - this is a bunch of transistors which can be softwarely reconnected to get a specific functionalities. the advantage of it is that you can get any different hardware functionalities out of a single chip, the single chip can performe as a many different HARDWARE devices. but the other side is that you are little limited with what you can get out of it, the more you want the more you need, the art is to programm your limited harware connections inside your fpga chip to get a full functionalities. in goal of that you have to manage your strategy of fpga programming to build both a needed functinality and yet not to run out of fpga limitations

    I totally agree. I have been using RME for many years and I still feel like a moron when I use it. I have it setup and working, but when I need to change something I realize that I do not actually know what I am doing and have to relearn Totalmix again. It is just alien. Powerful but Alien. I think ahuge part of it is that when you select an output the setting is done for that submix but the other channels is not clearly greyed out so it feels like you are editing everything when you are not.

    I would argue that Metric Halo Mio Console trump's total mix easily, but has an even steeper learning curve. As with most things with more power and flexibility comes an often steeper learning curve. Totalmix falls somewhere in the middle and strikes a good balance in my opinion. It takes everyone a bit of trial and error, often starting with an interface that offers less, discovering new needs, upgrading, etc.

    • @ezrashanti
      @ezrashanti Před rokem

      Also the one limitation with totalmix that I think could be improved would be the option to have more than one Reverb / Echo send. Rme actually has great tutorial videos for total mix, which have only come out in the past few years and everyone should watch them all before choosing RME. The learning curve is nothing compared to a DAW and is well worth the modest time investment.

  • @silentskystudios
    @silentskystudios Před rokem +1

    I'm curious as to what you found so difficult about TotalMix. Are you talking about using it specifically for controlling monitor mixes in the studio? Over the course of probably the past 20 years, I moved from an old Echo Layla 2496 to an RME Multiface to an RME Digiface to an RME Fireface UFX. TotalMix was similar to the software console for the Layla, so I never really had a lot of trouble with it. You basically select the bus (which is tied to hardware outputs) you want to adjust, then adjust the faders for that bus/set of outputs. Not dissimilar to adjusting a monitor mix on a digital console like the Behringer X32 (hardware or software) or the X-Air series (software only).

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  Před rokem +2

      Yes, I agree if you’re using it in a simple way like that, it’s not difficult at all. As an example, though, I have 28 inputs of which 18 of them are connected to 18 different pieces of outboard gear, that I run in probably 20 different configurations, to use total mix as a patchbays. Not only that, but I do headphone mixes, I also route audio to multiple the DAW’s at the same time, plus a whole lot of other things. To be able to do all that it’s not as easy.
      I completely understand it now, but it was harder than it needed to be to do all of that. If you read the comments, here, you’ll see that the vast majority of people had/have the same challenge that I did.
      As you know, not, everybody works the same way, or has the same needs.
      As I stated, I have a ton of respect for army gear, I think it’s absolutely fantastic. And when I do get all of the videos done, and I’m waiting until I get them all done before I release any of them. I’ll have a lot of suggestions for RME if they choose to implement them, to make it very easy for even the novice to get.
