The trick is to clamp one spot, stick a screwdriver underneath and wedge it so it doesn't move, slowly rotate the wheel and it will pop right on. You'll have to move the clamp every few inches, but it's super fast and no need to put the tires in hot water.

It's good to see someone working on the same saw as I have. Thanks so much.

  • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

I had that saw for about 20 years. Never did change the tires or de-tensioned the blade. Sold the saw for more than I paid for it new! Good demo, Luie for those that need a little help taking care of their Craftsman bandsaw! 😄

In the past I have used beefy electrical zip ties as clamps.
And, the shaft of a screw driver to help work the tire on the wheels.
    Thanks for the video.

Thanks for your video. It was very helpful. Instead of soaking my new replacement wheel tires in hot water, I fastened them down securely onto my workbench with wood screws and let them overhang the workbench a
Few inches. This allowed me to keep the wheels from moving while using a few spring clamps and stretching the tire around the wheel. Not easy but it worked.

good info, Luie. I have the same model bandsaw which came from my Dad’s shop. I tried to mount urethane tires, but finally went with rubber ones that came from Craftsman. Gave it a complete refurbishing and tune-up. It is a good saw on which I use a fine blade or the sanding belt. But since then I acquired larger capacity bandsaws. I just received the replacement tires for one of those saws. I wore out the original ones cutting up turning wood. Guess I will have to quit procrastinating and put them on. Last time, I used two paint sticks under the tires for leverage, along with the clamps. Saved my fingers from getting bitten!

I've got an almost identical bandsaw. Did this a couple of years ago. You managed to do it without any of the "impolite comments" That I uttered! A bit of advice, back off the tension in between using the saw. The blade tends to "seat" into the urethane and causes vibration.

This will be a helpful video Luie. The tires can be hard to get on and always nice to see it done.
Great safety tips and also using the spring clamps to keep the tires in place. Kind of like having extra tire irons when fixing a flat on a dirt bike.
I had that same saw but a few years older. The metal covers were a lot different. Like something you would see on a car from the 40's.
As a matter of fact I do have a bandsaw I have been wanting to put urethane tires on. It is a very old Delta. Pre-1947 but it runs great after.
Thanks for the inspiration for me to finally order some tires.

I will for sure...I have been putting off doing this for sometime now.
Right now it seems as I have a thousand things going on. I ordered the bearing upgrade for my other bandsaw. I got it in the mail last week and need to find the time to do that.
Somebody told me that when you retire you will have all the time to do what you want.
Well been retired for 11 years and I guess I want to do one heck of a lot because I still don't have enough time LOL

I just had to install new tires on my bandsaw! I actually had my tires sitting in my garage for about 3 months and you motivated me to get mine done. Do you have a favorite blade company? I decided to try a Timberwolf this time, but usually used Olsen’s.

I would say the two major things to look for are generally appearance. Do they look cracked pieces missing or valleys.
And does the blade seem to be wondering more than usual
No matter how careful you try to be you can’t get a good cut.

Hello Spindles; I have a Craftsman Model 103.0103 that I want to put back in service. Unfortunately, the upper wheel hinge or axle (have seen both names for part) which is pot metal was broken. Actually, the ears were both broken when I got it. I have been unable to find a replacement part but have seen some whole vintage machines for sale. Do you have any idea where a replacement part might be obtained? Also, is there a method of repair for the pot metal ears that I still have? Thanks.
