I guess The Disciple may get chance for submission at Oscars since in India it's released in 2021. Same as Jallikattu was released in festivals in 2019 and it was ditched over Gully Boy that year and next year in 2020 it was released. Maybe I'm correct maybe not but I think if The Disciple has a chance again this year it should be sent for Oscars.
Ps : People who say Oscars are fake , if your expected person doesn't win that doesn't mean other people haven't done efforts in their craft. Oscars is a great platform for people to get recognition. Yes many great movies are snubbed but those who win are truly deserving.

Grt Insights Jammy. Wouldn't have thought so deep abt the movie.. I somewhere thought.. the movie lost the plot in "to be or not to be" situation..
He wanted to achieve stature of his guru and show all that he is a good and honest towards his craft but couldn't get there where he wanted to be. His constant failure in life kept him pushing back.. and jeopardy of being what he is and achieving what he can't was all in the movie.. end could have been more filmy.. but all in all its a good movie to watch..

I absolutely loved the movie. Yet another maestro by the director Chaitanya Tamhane.
Disclaimer: I am writing this without the knowledge of Hindustani Classical music, however the core emotions could be very well understood.
The scene where Sharad Nerurkar the protagonist goes for buying a Kurta and asks for “सिम्पल डिझाईन वाले दाखवा, जास्त पण डिझाईन नको आणि साधे पण नको ” , I could feel his restrictive ambitions. That feeling where Sharad put the restriction based on the morality or rather the classical music ethos. He does not wish to go overboard but the hidden aspirations always seeps in. That thread of ‘restrictive ambitions’ continues throughout the film.
Without passing any value judgement, I felt the type of educational setup was very undemocratic. The glorified idealism of the guru, most often tend to create the falsification. The ‘abuse of a student’ or rather the ‘abuse of the obedience’ sometimes really hit hard. Direct projection of dark character is missing in movie, but the dark relationship could be very well visible. The consent given by the abusee makes the evil even more banal. Jyotiba Phule quoted that “जोपर्यंत गुलामाला गुलामगिरीची जाणीव होत नाही तोपर्यंत तो बंड करण्यास उठत नाही”. This ‘Gulamgiri’ in the ‘pursuit of perfection’ would lead the utopia, where the reality and ideals are separated from each other.
The subtleties of Mumbai’s timezone are very well depicted from the backdrop of Dadar bridge’s archaic buildings to the uber cool upper Worli bridge’s new lavish buildings. Those bike rides and the constant background voice of Sumitra Bhave as Maai is soothing as well as provoking. The book Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari has very well summarised that only Homo Sapiens i.e. Humans can create fiction, that is imaginary world around in the form state boundaries, religion, token currency, etc. In the movie too, the Maai’s ‘moral absolutism’ gravitates sharad more towards Maai. The scarcity of Maai makes Sharad give undue value to the recordings of Maai. This is the core supply-demand principle of modern economics but humans can use it with their emotions and levitate anything to the extremities.
The reaction Sharad gets while donating the ‘Maai’s so called rare collection hits with the reality. However, ego defensive mechanism could not let him face the harsh reality. The created bubble is so comforting, that even the small prick in it could shatter his entire existence. This can be further seen through the ill treatment given by Sharad to his student for trying out something new in life.Deadness or hollowness within him could be seen throughout the movie. Stillness of every frame vividly enlarges this impact. This creation of an artificial bubble by the Sharad is revealed through the flashback, where music critique Joshi shows the real mirror. The water thrown by Sharad on Joshi’s face is not only shutting Joshi down but washing away any further views which counter his world view. More interestingly, it jumps to the next shot where Sharad is giving bath to his Guru. Water is used in both the scenarios, one hides the truth and another glorifies the lie. The truth is often bitter also stated by the Maai. His constant rejection of his father’s talent is invariably his own mediocre projection onto his father.
Sharad was the disciple but the Gurus failed him. However this disciple too failed to question. Hence it is said that an unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth. This disciple fails but the movie ‘The Disciple’ is far more than successful. This movie hits the correct chords with or without understanding of Classical Hindustani music.
    - Mandar Choudhari

I think this was an honest review. While I don't agree with many inferences, I understand how there can be an optimistic point of view here. What I strongly disagree with is that the movie is representative of the truth. Being a singer in training I have enough exposure to this world. I'm also a very well trained 'Shrota' (listener) of Hindustani classical music and very aware of the general opinion of the community (especially in Maharashtra) on the current state of music and the entertainment industry. It's true that the community as a whole does not want digression from they consider pure music. It's also true that the current generation of well respected musicians (Gurus) have opened their mind to newer formats of performance, appreciate other genres for their contribution to music, and are encouraging the next generation to spread this knowledge in their own way. This ia very much proven by films like 'Katyar Kaljat Ghusli' and 'Bandish Bandits' where classical music was celebrated and presented to a younger audience in a packaging that's more appealing, and palatable. The Desciple fails to capture this. The community is instead used as an artist's anchor (as it was used as a plot device here). I agree that a film maker can have his own point of view on how he wants to build his character but when he goes to say that it's representative of reality, it cannot be so one sided. Even an unsuccessful mediocre singer, with not much to his name would seek joy in just bring able to practice his art. The story would have been far more accurate if the character had more layers rather than a single greyish monotonous tone of disappointment. It's almost as if the filmmaker was fascinated with this depressing negativity so much that he failed to see what most true desciples seek from their art. The pure bliss they feel when they practice.
    Here's my honest opinion.
I was lured by the trailer into thinking that this film is about the unconditional devotion, relentless passion that is expected of the students of this incredible tradition and the near spiritual path they are required to follow to earn the blessing of music. What I got was a a bunch of boring, stretched out scenes featuring a down right depressing protagonist. The movie amounts a rich and proud heritage down to a dying art form which is the most inaccurate portrayal. It's nice that the movie attempts to normalise mediocrity. Something of a hazard for all artists with an ambition. But wouldn't that also require the protagonist to seek acceptance and make peace with what he has? Or just because the movie has a rather blah end, we as audience are supposed to believe that it's REAL? There are many a real life stories about what happens when you walk the path but don't make it there. However even those stories are about the good that comes out of struggle. The sense of victory or utter disparity, or both in one way or another. Unfortunately 'The Desciple', was underwhelming in every possible way. Just another example of a pseudo artistic narrative technique that qualifies a bad script and un-impactful dialogue delivery as subtle performances. In my opinion, a subject like 'The life of an Indian Classical Singer' does not warrant a dark, depressing plot. The institution is known for something far better and deserved a nuanced treatment.

Of course we are a diverse nation we have our set of different tastes towards music. But undermining craftsmen of Shashtriya Sangeet thats unfair. Disciple tried showcasing all these aspects. True not too many audiences have the maturity to understand the essence of this beautiful movie.

His failure as a musician is solely because of his own chaotic mindset. His thoughts are so cluttered, his loyalty is questionable, his commitment is shaky and more importantly, he's been a musician for the sake of audience all along, and not for his own true self.
Putting the blame on changing society, fast paced lifestyle, changing audience expectations, or criticising old school methods are not appreciable.

Rather, we should have competition amongst ourselves, across the various language industries and set up credible award ceremonies that honour the best content and talent in the country which would further incentivize us to bring about even more excellence.
