Imagine what Zonta felt seeing those two cars zip right past him....
not just right, but left too..!
@@peniku8 lol
The thing is Zonta kept straight ahead. If he moved a little it would be a mess. Mika gambled with Zonta behavor and luckly the best happened.
He did an Interview for Brazilian TV. He knew Schumacher will catch him and choose to stay on his position (middle) to avoid trouble. But he didn't know Hakkinen was there too and will choose right side. He statet: "Those guys are crazy!!!"
He surely needed a change of underwear after the race.
I love how Hakkinen says "The Michael" everytime he refers to him hahah
It makes Michael sound soo legendary
He says "overtooked"
"overtake the backmarker then overtake the Michael" --- hahaha truly legendary moment in ALL of F1!
@@marble25 "overtook the backmarker" not "overtooked", check your ears
El Michael
I remember zonta being interviewed after the race and still baffled: “yeah, I even said it on the radio ‘are those guys nuts!?”.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes
Yupp
Yes.
It's a well known fact that Schumacher said Hakkinen was by far the one opponent he feared most; this masterful (and frankly ballsy) overtake is a great example why.
Not feared though. Most respected rival and most enjoyment in battles is what Michael always said about Mika
May happen with lewis and max pretty soon
Pretty much what happen with Lewis and Max currently, not that bitter relationship like Rosberg V Lewis / Senna V Prost
Those McLaren MP15 and Ferrari F2000 were amazing
Häkkinen is my favorite driver so far.
I bet they're so glad they put a camera on Zonta's car that weekend
How many cameras did they put those days?
I think that every car had a camera back then already, that started to happen gradually since Digital F1 started their operations
They would put blanks on some cars there's a video on it done back in 2007
@@WillJK do you know what the point of putting blanks would be? so no team knows who's being recorded or something?
@@perpetual_bias Likely so the aero profile and weight additions are consistent
One of the best overtakes with that exotic v10 sound. Mvp of this was zonda for keeping cool and sticking to the middle.
Yes, Michael went left as that is where Zonta left the room initially. Then he could see Mia coming up in the rear view so positioned himself smack in the middle to allow Mika past. Presume he must have slowed a little to give them enough room going into the corner as well.
Great action by Zonta too.
@@blackbee_v8 yup
@@jonnyrubs Zonta said in the interview afterwards that he had no idea that Mika was there and he had not seen him until he was in front of him
Absolutely. This was textbook-like behavior from a lapped driver. Show where you gonna leave the space and stick to your line.
I love how Hakkinen is genuinely delighted by the result, and Schumacher is gracious with his perspective. That's a respectful battle, and a respectable outcome.
Considering Schumi had just pushed Mika on to the grass driving 300kph and that Mika lectured him about fair racing after the race, I don't know if it was respectable. Mika was really frustrated with him, but kept his head cool and won.
@@jussieronen3707 Mika wouldn't have kept his cool if he hadn't won.
2 Great teams, 2 Legendary drivers, One of the greatest Rivalry of all time , Mika and Michael
Senna and prost, Hamilton and rosberg says hello
Stop being dithyrambic... Everything is getting "best of all time" with people. Seriously.
Great indeed...but Senna v. Prost and Hunt v. Lauda would beg to differ for "greatest" lol
It was not a real rivalry. Mika and Michael were very friendly and respectful to each other off the track.
@@gumzinator Rivals don’t have to be enemies.
The sight that Zonta sees when 2 world champion contender just zooms past him at incredible speed looks extraordinary
Not only contenders, he got passed by four WDC by that point 😁😁
I love how Hakkinen says “The Michael”. That’s just so wholesome😁
Copy paste
@@andreabrembilla6466 Not really, but alright then, whatever u want to believe😂
2 GOATs giving each other exactly the required amount of space and respect to pull off the best overtake of all time. Miss those days when Schumi was doing his best to outsmart Hakkinens best. Keep fighting Michael
You must see the overtake Piquet did to Senna. For me that one was the best.
@@conceptualmessiah01 You mean the one in 1985 when he overtook Senna while drifting inside the corner?
@@Artas1984 yes.
@@Artas1984 With one hand in the wheel while flipping him off as well aha
Amazing how people romanticize the old days
Just laps before this Michael was pushing Hakkinen off in order to defend and even touching his front wing one time
Mika is the most underrated world champion
**laughs in nelson piquet**
@ReichsFührer Monika
Still the weakest one though in the Senna/Prost/Mansell/Piquet Big 4 of the 80’s and 90’s…
@ReichsFührer Monika Piquet is really underrated but Mika won against Michael and that is a big thing and nobody talks about how great Mika was
@ReichsFührer Monika no doubt on that. In Brazil there are plenty of people that believe Piquet was better than Senna.
I started watching F1 because of Mika. And become McLaren supporter.
V10, no DRS, no TC, just pure driving skills and SISU
I think they had TC at the time.
There were still aids that they used back then that they don’t use now you know? TC being one of the main ones, this is when the V10 statements being moronic and cringe
Sisu. Courage.
You know F1 cars don't have TC today either?
Are you trying to say that today's drivers have no skill? Also they did infact have TC there
How can you not love that high pitched *"NEEEEOWWWW"* sounds, it's amazing.
Still can remember this overtake, i think one of the most spectaculaire ever!
I remember this too. It was on CZcams yesterday.
According to my dad we watched this race live but I was a bit too young to actively remember this specific overtake. I do have some memories of the mass crash that happened a couple of years earlier tho :o
One of the most spectacular overtakes that I can remember was Alonso on Schumacher on the outside of the 130R in Japan :D
@@psyched91 too bad we wont be seeing 130R this year race cancelled haha deng it
@@psyched91 ya, also a great overtake.
Great rivals that actually respected each other on and off track.
You should see what happened the lap previous to this overtake
@@mjw28gaming its racing
2:02 Epic for us but I can’t imagine the shock Zonta felt at that moment!
I think he expected it though he checked both his mirrors just before the overtakes
@@valerierodger7700 oh ok
Zonta to teamboss on radio: 'Ok, next pit, imma need my brown pants ok..."
I hope the 2022 season will be as exciting as this was!
hopefully, with how cars where built for closer battles "on paper"
If you're not enjoying 2021 then I doubt you'll enjoy 2022
You jinxed it mate.
I'll never forget that day, EVER.
A seminal moment in our sport.
Somewhat moved by the mutual admiration in the presser, looking back now.
Take note, champs.
One of , if not, the greatest overtake of all time. Michael nearly caused a collision a lap or two prior. To then pull off a move like that is ridiculous.
Exactly, nice catch. This overtake it was the culmination of the previous two laps.
Best overtake ever. Love when mika explains it to michael you can see that Schumacher is actually interested. 2 true legends
Returned to watch this as Martin Brundle was actually interviewing Hakkinen and was asking him about this very overtake at this weekends Belgium Grand Prix. Listening to Mika explain how this was done in a very funny way was awesome
I just did the same!
Same here jejeje
I did this week after remembering the interview from last week🤣
I like how Brundle calls it on the approach to Eau Rouge, that's the benefit of having a racer in the colour commentary seat. It's actually a pretty understated commentary, much like the famous Hunt one for Senna/Mansell at Barcelona
Possibly the best F1 overtake of all time.
Hamilton on Verstappen at Silverstone for me
@@palacefan4286 Best 'complete' overtake of all time then, maybe 😉
One of the best but definitely the best one is alonso on schumacher at 130R
@@yuvrajbahl7909 that race has two great ones. Kimis around the outside of Fisichella has to be up there too
Piquet over Senna at Hungary.
here after seeing hakkinen on Belgium f1 2022 grand prix lol
its like belgium grand prix of 2022, ocon against vettel & gasly
And here I am just pretending to do stuff half this cool on a simulation wheel 😂😂
Sup
22 years later
I got goosebumps watching the post race interview more than the move itself. What a couple of legends and with so much respect for each other. A classic era!

Legendary times with legendary drivers.
Such a impressive overtake from Hakkinen.

Honest, this is more impactful when you include 2 laps before when Michael was not giving Mika any room, nearly pushing him into barriers.
This is true brilliance of this overtake, Mika used Zonta as a shield.
i was a Ferrari and Schumacher's fan but you just can't get mad at an overtake like this one.
you just have to go "wow" and feel lucky you've witnessed something extraordinary
Ah yes, the great moment when Mika overtook the backmarker and then overtook The Michael
Back in the Days F1 still was exciting
Indeed!
I can't help but smile watching this. Tremendous driving by 2 legends. Shout out to Zonta as well for not veering left or right
Thanks Martin. That was indeed incredible
Here after the double overtake in Belgium 2022!
The best overtaking of all time and the best f1 engine sound of all time too.
the Michael
A master level maneuver, Hakkinen one of the all-time greats.
What superb overtake that was
Michael vs Mika was probably the greatest rivalry of all time
Schumacher was and still is the greatest of all time and I believe Hakkinen was the only driver during that time that could match Schumacher in raw speed and talent
Keep fighting Michael
Agree, agree and agree
I have followed Formula 1 since 1983. This is still my favorite pass.
1:36 look at the dutch crowd
Overtook the Michael
As a Schumi fan, I didn't like seeing this, but Häkkinnen won the world championship in the first season I watched. So he is the archetypal F1 Champion for me. Huge respect for this battle. Mika also seemes to be a cool guy :)
I never was a Schumi fan. So this overtake was so delightful for "my boy" Mika Häkkinen! It clearly shows how talented as a driver he was! I will never forget this manoeuvre by the great Finland driver Mika Häkkinen! Coolest F1 driver ever!
the level of respect in between each other is so incredible and lovely to watch
2 legends, a great respect between them
Zonta on-board is hilarious 😂
Im glad he didnt went to the right
Will never forget watching this live. One of my favourite moments in F1 history.
Best overtake in f1 history I was watching this race live as a teenager and always supported Mika over Schumacher
One of the best passes and comments of all time, *"I overtook the backmarker then I overtook the Micheal"* 😂
Outstanding move
This is my absolute favorite moment in F1...when i saw it first time i shouted out loud and laughed in pure joy!!
You know you’re a legend when a competitor calls you The Michael
Anyone here after Gasly and Ocon doing the same with Vettel 2022?
Me. I didn't sexpect such a similar double pass, though.
Martin Brundle sent me here
Hakkinen vs Schumacher is what got me into F1. Gosh! I feel old now.
@@valerierodger7700 thanks! What matters eventually is that a lot of people across different ages enjoy watching F1 :)
Guys, I miss these days.
What a respect for each other.
work of art
Who's here after Ocon, Vettel, and Gasly overtake?
Me.
I remember watching this as if it was yesterday and its been 21 years since!
Oh how time flies!
Single best overtake in f1 history change my mind.
Just Watching F1 Spa 2022 and reminded of this when Martin bumped into Mika on the Grid. :)
That view going down Eau Rouge and up the hill is actually spine-chilling 🤯
What an overtake
wow dude i miss old school f1
they should make a documentry about famous drivers too not only shucmacher
I remembered it like it was yesterday : this is not an overtake, THIS IS LEGEND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The amount of respect these guys have for each other is amazing.
Love the clip of Mika explaining the move to Michael
I miss the Hakkinen / Schumacher era so much. Not only for their driving but also for their sportsmanship towards each other. Just huge respect from both sides from two great human beeings.
Martin just talked with Mika about this overtake during the grid walk in Spa. Webber on Alonso in 2011 was pretty special too.
i was worried when this was not featured in earlier published top 5 moments at spa.
I was always a Mika fan growing up 👍 such a fantastic driver and SO quick it was unreal. He should've had more titles in my eyes
We’re all here from Spa 2022 - Martin Brundle gridwalk!
Wow I just started getting into F1. But I know class when I see it!
Legends had watched it LIVE
This is what makes racing intresting ...love Schumacher
I was at the top of Eau Rouge that day screaming my head off! Amazing to be there to witness it first hand
To be able to listen to these 2 have a chat today would be a real treat.
Overtaking the century !
WOWZERS WHAT AN EPIC OVERTAKE
Miss the days when there were rivalries on the track and friendship outside
I think Vettel and Hamilton got on ok during their battles. Remember back then we also had Montoya and Schumacher, Hill Schumacher, etc. The difference was Mika, he was and still is just a great bloke.
1:35 Probably the most beautiful V10 sound with that natural distant reverb
This rivalry is all about mutual respect between two great drivers and teams. Something we dont see today.
The most beautiful overtake on the most beautiful track on the most beautiful car.
So much respect from both drivers. Real gentlemen and great sportsmanship.
Gotta love the respect between top drivers...
Well done to Zonta for choosing his line and gave Mika space 🙏🏻
This used to be my favorite overtake, until Ocon did a better version at SPA this year 🥵
Mika is my favourite F1 driver of all time. Superb driver and always went all out. Retired way to early but you can understand his reasons why. This move will live long in the memory banks👏👏👏
Marty brought me here
Zonta's POV is insane!!👍👌 What a maneuver!!👍👌
Its so nice to see that one driver can really appreciate a move from another driver on him.
It is a great move and I Love you showed they both talking about the manouver.
Great memories..the onboard cams are a brilliant addition 👏👏
