No wonder Hakkinen was the only driver Michael felt threatened by. He's absolutely nailing the racing line here.
Hakkinen was just as quick as Michael. Especially he picked up a lot of speed going up Eau Rouge and Radillion
Also Räikkönen was a threat to Michael in 2003. Michael only won by a 2 point difference between himself and Kimi.

Zonta deserves some credit for being aware of what was going on, and keeping his cool. It would be so easy to move to the right to give Schumacher space as he passed, without realising that Hakkinen was coming through on the other side.
Probably one of the greatest passing moments ever
In any type of racing all the faster driver/rider/etc wants is predictably. You want to be in the good line, the bad line, right in the way, whatever, just keep doing what you’re doing when we got to you and hold your line.
Somebody probably told him to be careful on the radio
I think he was asleep tbf
He admitted in the interview later that he had intended to move to the right to let Schumi overtake, but then he spotted Mika and just held his breath and stood (in motion) still.
In my opinion, this is by far the most beautiful scene of Formula 1 racing

A leap of faith from Mika but pays off. Judging by the outrageous blocking by Schumacher on the previous lap, this was literally the only way past! great move, can only assume that Zonta was aware of Mika on the inside
Schumacher was relentless in doing stuff like that which is why Hakkinen did these brilliant things. Hakkinen is still my favorite driver of all time for this.
And here you only have 2 laps …this battle last i don’t remember how long ..maybe 10 maybe more
"outrageous blocking ".
Hakkinen never put his wheels beside Schumacher while the latter never waved before aggressively closed the lane.
High risk-reward movie from both (Schumacher aggressive defense, Hakkinen attacking).
How is it outrageous? Defending is quite common in motorsport
I am 34 years old now and I remember watching this scene live. Epic, splendid.
And best of all, Mika never ran people off the track.
Its true though..Schumacher was incredibly selfish and dangerous when it came to blocking drivers.respect to him and i hope he gets well soon

Hakkinen is insane. He actually took eau rouge completely flat in his second attempt to pass schumi. Difficult enough to do in quali let alone race trim back in those days
I was kinda wondering about that. It sounded like he lifted off just the smallest amount, both times.
It was said that only Senna could afford that corner full gas (telemetry data they reported). It seems that Hakkinen do the same. The small lift we hear is maybe due to the climb. Engine lowers a little RPM even if you keep down the foot. Of course this is my impression, I could be wrong.
I can't recall where, but in one interview Mika said that he went flatout on the second attempt.

It's really cool to see how much distance Schumacher put on Hakkinen through the second sector and how it all came back down during the third and the first to end in this overtake. The cars seem to be set up very differently.
The Ferrari had a more downforce heavy set up due the rain at the beginning. This gave the McLaren an edge in the straights in the first and last sectors at the cost of time in the slower second sector.

Any overtake in F1 is to be remembered. Do they use indicators, orrrr? Joke sport.
@@samblack5313 As opposed to American motorsport where overtaking is essentially meaningless?
Mike Spearwood
Here we go... I’m American am I? Even if it is meaningless, if they actually pass each other, they are light years ahead of the joke that is F1. If every penalty they handed out was a pass, F1 would be the most exciting form of racing on the planet. As it stands, I’d prefer to slam my cock in a car door than sit through an F1 weekend.
Mike Spearwood
In the last decade, everything MotoGP has done, has been to make racing closer and facilitate passing. Every rule they brought in, electronics packages, tyre packages.. every single rule has been made to make close racing. Now we have 360kmh machines that at the end of most races, the podium is split by less than a second.. in that time, F1 has shit its pants worse with every passing day.
My point is, that F1 is NOT racing. They don’t pass and they make pit stops. This is timed durability testing. Real racing is flag to flag, they pass on track, and the machine doesn’t do 80% of the job for you.
@@samblack5313 I agree with your point. To be fair though, it's a lot easier to overtake with bikes than F1 cars. The problem with F1 is that:
1. They race on too many skinny street circuits with cars that are too wide.
2. F1 has always been a competition between constructors: engineering/innovation as much as the drivers themselves. This leads to not only dominant seasons, but dominant eras as we see right now with the Mercedes.
