So surreal that this is 1998 yet Martin Brundle sounds exactly the same as he does in 2022.
He's sounded 45 years old since he was 7 years old. Lol
He's been commentating in F1 almost as long as I've been alive just a few months off from the start of the 1997 season.
Seems like he was 39 year old, when this race came along and so he has since then kept the same voice.
He definitely makes a lot of mistakes now though

Murray Walker. Total legend. He was 75 years old when commentating on this race and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Got to be one of the best F1 races ever, it had a bit of everything. Rain, crashes, schumiee vs DC in the pit lane, Eddie Jordan skipping in ecstasy and a Damon Hill win. Just awesome.
And Jean Alesi on the podium, let's not forget that.
The Michael going faster on three wheels than some people were on all four....

The wider narratives of that season fed into it as well, with an epic title fight and Jordan's season of two halves. Plus Hill being cruelly denied Arrows' first win the year before, and his own history with Schumi. I think Ayrton Senna said the beauty of sport lay in the emotional ride it takes us on and this race delivered all of them. Could watch another million GPs and it would never be topped.
I think this is the best F1 race ever, with Canada 2011 being second

@@freudsigmund72 macau was a lot of money, but nothing compared to this. A GT3 car costs in all about 500k€ but each of this f1 cars cost much more than that

That day Coulthard crashed and caused the biggest mass collision in F1 history, got almost trapped in the gravel, and got hit hard by Schumacher with whom he almost got in a fistfight (during the actual GP).
Yet he managed to still finish the race somehow.
This even tops Coulthard hitting the pit wall in Australia 95.

Haha! 😂 I watched this race live with my dad. We'd never seen a race like that before. It was completely insane and just awesome! I couldn't believe my eyes at the crash. I think that is when I fell in love with F1.
@@Kazimation Same for us and a lot of friends. This race got our family completely hooked, and a lot of friends told the same at school. Also helped that F1 was way more competitive back then.
I got back from a family walk late ( trying not to tell everyone to hurry up ) dashed to the TV switched it on to F1 cars exploding everywhere.
I was 8 years old, but I remember it vividly..
I started watching f1 on and off in 1996 as a kid, but it was watching this race live on tv that made me a fan for life. Being 9 years old and watching that mass pile up and all the drama, I thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Even to this day I've not forgotten how amazing it was to watch this race, as a kid I was so happy to finally see a Jordan win and Damon back at number 1. Epic race.
Can we appreciate how well Michael drove around on 3 wheels? Incredible.
Can we also appreciate that MS was close to punching DC with a helmet on? Lol.
That 3 wheel Ferrari on wet is probably still faster than 2020 Ferrari on softs.

I remember that race so well. Watched it together with my dad, it was stunning.
The fact that the spa race "today" takes a lot of waiting time i have been watching alot of old spa race...
As an unapologetic Damon fangirl - even now - this is one of the best, and craziest, races of all time.
What rarely gets mentioned is that despite the carnage at the start, and insane accidents later on, barring unreported (to the public) inevitable bumps and bruises, no one was injured. Not too many years before that, there would have been - at the very least - a number of hospitalisations. _That_ weekend in '94 (the one I hate remembering for obvious reasons) was only a few years before. Most of the drivers at Spa had been there. I would be _very_ surprised if no one had some sort of flashback or nightmare, during that moment, the race, or after it had all ended and they had physically moved on.

Nah they don't even start anymore while its raining. They better stop racing at all if safety is no. 1 priority
They should limit the speed electronically but continue the race and allow restarts. So much more fun.

I was 8 years old at the time of this race and wasn't really into F1, my dad was sort of a casual fan. He'd watch a race here and there but was never properly invested in it. Before this race i must have only watched 2 or 3 races but for some unknown reason me and the old man decided to sit down and watch the 1998 Belgian GP. Since then I've watched 7 GPs at Silverstone, been to Monza, Nurburgring and curcuit de Catalunya. Still hoping to get myself to this iconic race track one day! Will always have fond memories of this race!!

I remember watching this race live, was amazing, so eventful, and with being a Hill fan, it was nice to see him survive all that and get the win, not sure if they ever won another race Jordan, or maybe that was their first win, cant remember.
