As a newer F1 fan I’ve always wondered why they banned mid race refueling…I think I understand the reasoning now 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Joke aside I think they banned the Fuel on the pits because F1 will be Bankrupt if Keep using that Fuel
I heard it from a friend i think
It’s a hazard but a controllable hazard amongst other things that can happen in a pit lane.
fuel fire wasnt as regular as people like to believe
Any time they talk about rule changes in the name of “safety”, it’s really code for intentionally slowing the cars down so they don’t outgrow the tracks they run them on. How else could ancient circuits like Monza and Monaco remain on the F1 calendar for decades despite the huge advances in car design? Banning refueling was just another way to slow the cars down by forcing them to be more efficient.
3:24 A perfect example of Murray's commentary "Let's keep calm" as a man is on fire on the screen.
I saw it happen live - one thing to bear in mind is that this was just a couple of months after Senna and Ratzenberger were killed, and no-one wanted anything remotely similar to happen again.

@Pulzanicus pulzanic they have a harness much like any racing car, but undoing a six point harness in the tight confines of an F1 car, especially under stress is time consuming and difficult.
@Pulzanicus pulzanic In the 90s safety standards were weaker but currently drivers are required to be able to leave the vehicle in under 7 seconds.

@@Chriss120 but what if the tank explodes? With so much fuel there could be a chance since if they crash there could be fire or something
@@thetechnoking it may sound much gas but it really ist. it´s just about a larger car tank with around 100l capacity (~26 Gallon) and i do believe they have a special foam that lines the tank which prevents any unwanted fires.
I'm sure the 1977 South African GP didn't help matters.
Great commentary by Murray Walker. Still missing him lots.
I remember the Verstappen one clearly - Benetton tried cheating by removing the fuel filter so they can fuel Michael Schumacher quicker to gain an unfair advantage over Williams and the others, but then forgot that they had removed Verstappen's one as well and left the nozzle attached too long so it overflowed causing the explosion and inferno.

That is the best and also the hardest thing you can do. As long as people are around you: wait until they will put the flames out. The first reflex is to run away, but then people can´t help you and you can made even things worse when you lit other things and people if you driving uncontrolled through the pit lane.

I actually saw this with my own eyes (Hockenheim 1994), but from a distance of 100 meters or more. So I did not see how quick he got out, but I can say the flames got very high but got extinguished very quickly. The whole thing lasted for less than 5 seconds, I guess.
