Coulthard caused 80% of all the chaos in this race and still finished P7
i think i remember him saying in one of his books that he was hit by irvine on the way out of la source, which sent him into the inside wall

After some hasty repairs to his car. At one point there was only 6 drivers, Shame Coulthard couldn't scratch any points after causing the carnage!

1. This was expertly made. Well done.
2. Quite how an f1 race can be red flagged in the wet needs to look at this race as a reference.
3. I still can't work out to this day on the 1st start. Schumi went into la source 5th and behind dc and Eddie. To be 3rd coming out and Just behind jv and escaping the ensueing carnage...
That's what I thought also. Schumi must had found a mighty amount of grip after the first chicane while DC and EI became out of shape after the first chicane.

As far as I can put together, Irvine went wide trying to pass Coulthard, forcing Coulthard to do the same, allowing Micahel to take both of them on the inside
@@Aunini That could be it. Then Irvine hit DC from the back, since it was very slippery, DC easily spun and thus the whole thing unfolded.
I think Coulthard lost it all by himself, one tyre on a painted line is all it takes - exactly how Irvine retired from the race later on
I didn't realise how much I'd missed Murray Walker's commentary until I started watching this. The era of Murray and Martin was absolutely golden for F1 commentary.
I stood at exactly that place when it happen in 1998😮 nearly got a mirror to my head. That bounced from Verstappens car in the fence..just where my face was 😅
The thumbnail of this video has to be one of the most chaotic, but amazing pictures of all time. Absolute mayhem has just unfolded, cars and debris everywhere, then there is Ricardo Rosset about to absolutely steam into the pack while being completely oblivious to what's around him.
Minor criticism - you called the restart lap 2/44 - this would have been lap 1/44 again, under the old rules meaning red-flag before end of lap 2 = voided race, restart as if it never happened.

Agreed. If it were happened today, Schumi would have been penalized for taking out his main competitor out. At the very least he could get a 10-second penalty.

Its crazy to watch this and realise just how aged this race has become, so many things I see that make me say "that wouldn't happen today" - hell the race wouldn't have even started! But kudos to the work put in here, thats some awesome work

The conditions were terrible! That’s why Shumacher went into the back of Coulthard because he just couldn’t see anything! Same thing happened to Fishicella.

This race had everything very expensive race with all the crashes.
Ralf was so lucky in that pile up. It was like he had an invisible force field around his car and somehow everyone missed him.
The only time in the history of Team Jordon that they came 1st and 2nd in a gran prix race. Good job Hill and Schumacher, you both made history.

That was a disaster. The fans who were at the track want compensation for it. I don't blame them at all. Refunds are not possible, but I believe the track should at least let them come back next year.

That's pretty impressive, though I thought we were gonna get graphics of all the drivers on track. And that was all of a sudden, displaying Michael and David's crash right away.
It was quite difficult cutting the footage to make sure none of the old graphics showed and the commentary still made some sense

It's always crazy to me that there are so many tires bouncing around that many cars all bunched up, and no drivers get hit in the head
I believe only Barrichello was "slightly injured"!
Anybody who wonders why the 2021 Belgium Grand Prix ended up as it did needs to watch this video.
This circuit needs to be respected. It is dangerous even in the dry as poor Anthoine Hubert found out in 2019.

In the end, Damon Hill won the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix ahead of his teammate Ralf Schumacher and Jean Alesi, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Pedro Diniz and Jarno Trulli completing top 6 in this rainy Formula 1 race.

I've never seen so many loose/flying wheels/tires before. Obviously no teathers back then.
They definitely came in around this time. But initially they didn't seem to work that well and you'd still see wheels flying. It was after a couple of marshalls were killed in the early 00s by flying wheels that they started really getting serious about it.
Hearing Murray Walker with the F1 theme is a bit jarring tbh...
They red flag now when someone sneezes, there's no way they'd allow us to enjoy this type of blokes racing.

First it would be a yellow a flag and then, about 20s later a red one.
I thought there were gonna be like 5 cars left after that first crash but somehow there were 18 at the restart 🤔

The four drivers who couldn't get back on the grid were Barrichello (the track paramedics thought he had a broken arm from how he was holding it and the red spot in his driver uniform) , Salo (destroyed his primary car in the practice 3 session and spare car in that lap 1 pileup), Panis, and Rosset.

This was the best race ever. By far. It had everything someone could wish for. And this is why i say: let them race in the rain instead of aborting it as soon as it is starting to rain even a little bit. F1 and their drivers became a bunch of snowflakes nowadays. I want the 90s back where real men drove real f1 cars.

F1 teams those days have spare cars set up for one or both of their drivers in the case they run into problems or in the case of a lap 1 crash like shown here and the race was red flagged subject to a complete restart.
