    NEVER NEVER connect both cables to the one car first. There is always the risk of shorting the free cable ends. Once the flat-red is connected, then connect the end of that cable to the charged car. Then do the same with the flat-negative, and so on.
    Come on RAC!

    Should have mentioned removal of cables.
    Someone else mentioned connecting one cable at a time both ends. I agree.
    I have heard that the good battery car should not be running when trying to start the bad battery car. This is due to sensitive modern computer circuitry that can be damaged. Both cars alternators fighting each other when both cars are running and cables connected can lead to problems.
    Also a good idea to run the good battery car for some minutes once connected, to put some charge in the bad battery.

And I was attaching the leads from my car battery positive to his cars battery to positive and negative to negative and the car will not start. Once I checked this video I found out that the negative has to attach to earth or just the metal of the engine the car started instantly. Thanx a million

    Need some help understanding....So I know the reason they say to put the negative lead on a ground, its because the battery may be leaking gas and a spark could flame up cause injury. What I dont get though is that it would seem that this does not apply if you start with the bad battery like in this video...because you will close the electrical connection at your good car.
    Therefore the order does not matter as long as you start with the bad car connections first?

      I was wondering this myself as I had to jump start my car the other day and I used the method I had in my head ( (+) of the bad to (+) of the good, (-) of the good to the (-) of the bad). But even my car manual says the last step, (-) of the bad, should go onto engine mount or similar. I found out it's because some batteries produces flammable fumes which could get ignited by the spark. Idea is to avoid this spark around battery.
      I have two issues with this though:
      1) I always see /small/ spark(s) when I connect or reattach the ground of a battery on my car. Either because I installed a new one or I had previously disconnected ground before I worked on a car. I can't avoid those sparks, what then?
      2) The last step is dangerous as the ground is a hot wire, I can do a damage if I'm not careful while looking for a spot where to put it (if I can't use (-) of a bad battery). It's good idea to find that spot before using cables then.
      Newer cars have dedicated places in engine bay where wires can be connected from/to (BMW that jump started me had those).

    pretty good, but most other vids guide to connect positive cable to both cars, not, as in this video connect positive end then negative end... wouldn't this leave two loose ends to possibly touch and short-circuit? also, they guide to use bare metal for negative/ground. bit confused now.

      Not really, the explanation is wrong, you first need to connect the red cable to the donor car's battery +/positive terminal, then the opposite end of the same cable to the flat car's battery +/positive terminal, THEN you do the same with the black cable using the -/negative terminals, I hope you didn't follow this video, also read the other comments

    Attaching one of the the black negative grips to the car bonnet did not work for me. The car only started when the negative terminals were connected to each other. Some people here suggesting that the attachment point was not providing sufficient earth and a better location would make it start.
    Once home, fully charge the battery via a mains charger. It will never fully recharge by driving the car.

    Can you use speaker wire if you don't have jump leads?

    • @neutronenstern.
      @neutronenstern. Před rokem +1

      no. Its too weak to handle the current. The current can go up to 100A or even higher for a short amount of time while starting. speaker wire will probably get very hot and smoke and might burn + For this to work, you need to remove isolation from the end, and then theres a big risk for a short. This is very very dangerous.

    • @sirmalus5153
      @sirmalus5153 Před 7 měsíci

      Even "thin" jump leads are the same size as thin WELDING leads, used on small, low power welding sets. Your better off just buying a good set of jump leads really, their not all that expensive at the end of the day and will do the job properly.
      If you have a set of speakers leads big enough (thick enough) to use as jump leads, you've already spent more on them than purpose made jump leads anyway.

    This video gives BAD ADVICE - POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS !!!!
    If, as is shown in this video, you start by connecting one end of each cable to the same battery, there is a risk that the metal parts at other ends of the cables may come into contact with each other, if they are not fully insulated externally. That 'short circuit' could cause arc-flash weldjng, damage the battery and even result in the plastic insulation of the cables melting and/or bursting into flames. Yoh should always first connect the positive terminals of the two batteries together using the positive (red) cable, and only then connect the negative battery-terminals together using the negative (black) cable.

    • @johnlyon9330
      @johnlyon9330 Před 4 lety

      Another point: Other videos advise NOT connecting the negative cable to the negative terminal of the flat battery. Instead, it should be connected to a bare metal part of the car away from the battery, which may produce hydrogen, which could cause an explosion. The other reason given is that connecting the cable to the negative terminal may affect the car's battery monitoring system.

    • @matthewhughes6315
      @matthewhughes6315 Před 4 lety +7

      That's probably because you didn't have a suitable grounding point. The whole reason that you are supposed to use a grounding point and not the negative terminal, is because when you remove the negative lead you can get a spark, and you don't want a spark to be anywhere near the battery!
