I got stuck with no phone, a dead battery, and no wallet one time in the country while working a job. I used gas tools only but had a few battery operated drills in my trailer. I proceeded to break a radio apart for wire, connect my car battery to a 20v dewalt battery, and start my car after waiting 10 mins to charge. It was a truly great moment hearing that engine just barely turn fast enough to fire. Oh boy.

Love those little jumpers! I no longer have to worry about asking strangers for a jump. People usually act funny like if they give you a jump their car will be destroyed so they come up with all kinds of excuses not to help you. I got in such a situation in a remote town when I had sat in my car with the engine off listening to music, distracted by a girl I had gone to meet.
When I turned off the radio and we went into the restaurant, it wouldn’t start when we came out and none of those folks was willing to give us a jump till a Good Samaritan drove by. I went straight to Walmart and bought one of these so I’ll never need to ask for help. I’ve helped people jump their cars with my jumper starter and it feels good to not pop my hood. I’m like a super hero when I use it to help. Haha!

Same experience. I was at a gas station and after pumping gas I got in the car and turned the ignition and all I got was clicking sounds. People would not help acting like they didn't have cables and other excuses. Luckily, when I popped the hood, it seemed my battery cable was just a little loose and some wiggling of the cable got it to start. I immediately went and bought me a jumper so I would never have to ask someone for a jump again. I too have helped a couple of people with my jumper.

I still have the original jump start device I bought back in 1996 and it still works fine. It's only 250 Amps but I've used it to jump start small compact car batteries and run small air compressors for tire maintenance and to blow up our Zodiac RIB for 11 years. It has sat for over a year before and still recovered after charging. The directions on the back say to recharge it after use and/or every 3 months. So apparently, even the cheap ones can provide decent service.

There are negatives to some li ion jump packs. Some won’t start if they sense no voltage at the car battery. My son’s cobra charger would not start up due to his mistake in leaving the dome light in overnight! It’s actually in the instructions on that charger, from Costco. And there are some real advantages to the lead acid chargers. They can provide 12 v continuous for long periods. Handy when working on vehicles. Many li ion packs time out after a short while

Love your videos. I started a job as a tow truck driver about a year ago. Now this is the kind of work NO BODY, including myself o ever thought I’d be doin. But after 20 years in sales here I am and I love it! I’ve had many questions over the last year and you have been such a huge help, thank you. Here’s my question, which jump pack would be best for semi trucks and not break my back or bank?

Great as always Scotty. This thing would be an absolute lifesaver in my off road Jeep. Imagine you hit the top of the trail, middle of nowhere, you get out if your tent in the morning and, bam, you left the dome lights on! Nobody coming to the top of the mountain to give you a jumpstart!

I've used Clore JNC 660s for many years since using one multiple times a day wrenching at a used car lot. They sell parts if needed and their service is outstanding. Their worklights are excellent too. Buying low end jump starters, jumper cables etc is like buying a cheap parachute. When you need one to work, you NEED one to work (price a towing bill!).

Another good technical advisory-- I made a decision, based on Scotty's (1) experience with lead-acid starters and (2) his clear explanation of why lithium-ion is superior as a first-resort starter. BTW-- those with laptop computers should remember to remove their lithium-ion battery when placing the laptop in storage. Battery removal preserves most of its charge for months, but left in the laptop, system maintenance drains the battery flat over the same period.

I just recently discovered your video channel and as a long time amateur mechanic as I am a cheap car nut I really apprieciate your great advice videos and humor too.Very welcome is your info on Li ion starter packs as well as the super capacitor and lead acid packs. I notice a lot of the cheaper lead acid packs at thrift stores and yard sales and because they usually sit too long uncharged and have high internal resistance like a car battery they are usually not worth buying but after taking one apart I believe they can be recycled by changing out the battery and either putting a new one from internet or maybe a computer back up power supply, etc. but only the more expensive ones with tire inflator extra 12v.outlet or light would be worth it now that the Li ion ones have come down in price, but the ones you can recharge from a cig. Lighter outlet while car running and then use to run 12v.coolers or sound systems and such while camping with no 120 v.outlets available are still cool especially for houseless people. I use mine to run a 12v.little guitar amp for playing out in the forest.Anyway I am a cheapskate and got mine practically unused from a friend who bought one too low in CCA to start his F 250 but starts my 2.2 Subaru motor just fine and got me out of trouble when winter weather caused car battery to go down in CCA. Also I believe a lot more of the lead acid starter packs have the recharge by car DC or AC option as well as tire inflator option which should make up somewhat for their bulkiness. Thanks again for the excellent video instruction especially the info on reading scanner data maybe you would like to do a comparison on some of the cell phone OBD 2 dongles. Thanks again

I'd probably go with something like the Autowit Supercap 2. It is a supercapacitor charger. You don't have to worry about it losing charge. It used the "dead" battery's power to jump start itself. A really cool guy named Scotty did a video on it a while back and strongly recommended it. :)
