Not sure if it matters, but I always leave the support car running. I've been taught that the battery starts discharging as soon as the jumper cables are connected to both cars. And I believe you can still make sparks with whether it's running or not. Really though I would have somebody push start it cause it's more fun and you don't need cables or the other car

What I've learned from this video: Mercedes doesn't want its customers to be able to replace the battery easily.
To be accurate, they want customers to take the car to a dealer for battery replacement, because that means MOAAAAAR MONEY.
Both the M5 and the S probably have the battery on the trunk (by know I think every car from them is like that) so they just route some terminals to jump start the cars easily.
They dont want you to change the air filter by yourself. 100$ labour XD

Great turtorial ! my battery is less than year old. I drive my queen from time to time on short distances so batt goes down easly after a few travels. Had a lot of strugle with jump start cables and had to ask people for help... now i have jumpstarter powerbank so i dont have to worry if im gonna get somwhere or not. recommend a lot

is it really that bad to connect the black cable on the negative charge? I seen it done many times with no problem at all.

When I connect the negative black jump lead to an earthing point of the car with bad battery,I see some sparks then I get scared and disconnect all the cables.Are these sparks normal and should I continue with the jump starting?

Still remember when I got my first car. Was afraid to even put gas in it, don't want to overfill it and exploding the car. Eventually I learned to put gas in it and check the pressure and oil and things like that. Hahaha but everytime something big needs to be done to that car I call my father or my grandfather. Then a year later the car died. St that time the car was junk to me so I started taking parts off and replacing them and all sorts of things. Guess when you love somthing too much and don't want to hurt it you'll always live in fear of losing it. But when you don't care and start to use and abuse it, it won't leave you. Lessons to learn.

hey you could make a series on this. changing a tyre, checking tyre pressures, checking tread depth on tyres, checking oil, changing bulbs. you get the idea.
Dead Red to Donor Red, Donor Black (which can be on the battery or engine block bare metal) to Dead Black engine block bare metal. Wait 30 seconds with both vehicles off. Then 2 minutes with Donor vehicle on, then turn on Dead vehicle, run for five minutes, both cars on. Then shut off donor vehicle, keep dead vehicle running. Take off cables in reverse order. Drive dead vehicle for at least 15 minutes to charge up battery before turning car off. The Black cable doesn’t have to be attached to either the dead or donor battery, just engine block metal is sufficient.
Aha. Nice. The M5 fired up as if the battery was more than half full, maybe even more. Glad to see it running again.
one thing I do is connect positive and negative on the dead car right away. then I connect positive on the car on the battery and negative on the battery as well. then I start my car and let it run. in my car I have wired the a/c solenoid (what bumps the revs a bit on a older car like mine) to a toggle switch and shut off all accessories. wait 5 min. then give it a shot. if said dead car has sat for more than a couple days dead and it's below freezing, stay connected for 10 mins minimum. and when taking off, clamp negative on the insulation of its wire, or on the positive wires insulation.

I never knew you could jump start them germans from the hood... I always just connect it to the battery in the boot. You learn something new everyday I guess :D

The metallic parts he connects the jumper cables to on both cars are just relays right? Also, does it matter where you ground the cables as long as they are touching another piece of metal? Unless you are connecting directly onto the battery of course, you would then ground on the ground terminal.
Is the ground on the dead vehicle always on the strut dome, or is it located in different places on different vehicles?

Another important tip is after the dead car is started leave it running for 15 minutes or longer so the battery charges or the battery will die again

Few turned him down for a jump, but My older brother brought him over to me and we took a chance to jump his car. After 10min the Senoirs suv was off an running.

Please don't start with the support vehicle off... if it has a weak battery it might be hard to get that started too. just keep it running. just don't touch the leads together.

Alternating current doesn't matter if you are revving the engine or not, the battery will carry the same charge to the dead car, right?

Sound good on paper but in reality it is not...sometimes you need to rev up if other car battery is totaly dead or car want have enough power to start..i jump started cars 100s off times

I followed your instruction and it did not work. The two negative terminals not being connected directly (you say connect negative to ground) maybe correct for the German cars but did not work on my Mazda CX5. The towing company came, connected the positive to positive and negative to negative and voila.
does it matter which order you do the cables
or when charging the dead vehicle you rev up the support vehicle to like 2-3k rpm, then it starts right up, depends on the thickness of cable tho anyway.
wait what if you need to replace the battery on the bmw ware is the battery why do they have to make it so hard on my 1995 chevy truck its just a simple v8 no plastic in the engine bay and no fancy computer motioning the engine. if you look under the hood in my truck you see an engine not a crap tone of plastic

I've got a question: I've got a car with a dead battery, and am going to sell soon, I wouldn't want to sell it to someone with a low battery that's just been freshly jumped. I can't go for a long drive with it since there's no insurance on it.. Is it possible to daisy-chain the dead battery to an other car with a fully charged battery and drive for a while like so to charge it.. Would it work?

Or you could buy a standalone jumpstart battery kit, which they sell for very cheap nowadays. Finding a "support" vehicle is just too much of a hassle and takes too long.
