Had a battery changed at AutoZone over a decade ago on one of my Lexus and it was freezing cold outside in the winter so the guy rushed and didn't check to make sure the connection was tight. The terminal fell off while driving the next day and knocked out power to my dashboard and speedometer lights so I couldn't see how fast my car would drive. I found a mechanic and he charged me 100 dollars to get it working again. Glad I didn't have to replace it.

    For those interested, I built a battery keeper out of an alarm battery & a pair of leads a buddy gave me from a cheap power inverter. He wanted to wire it directly, so he gave me the leads. I bought a battery from Batteries Plus with lug terminals. Chevy Cobalt has the battery in the trunk. Put this contraption across the front fuse box. Looks like a battery, but it's not. Saves the computer & radio programming information. I have XM radio with a 6 CD changer. Holds 48 stations & EQ for each input. That's a pain to balance it out if it looses programming. Change your trunk battery & nothing's lost. I couldn't do it the time I lost an alternator. Had to reprogram the radio & EVAP test the car to clear the smog test ready.

He even told me that I didn't have to worry about my timing belt because not only didn't I have an interference engine but that Toyota didn't even make any interference engines. Of course, I certainly did have one. He told a lady that she needed new spark plugs at 40K. Her car had Denso long life iridiums that, at the time, were warranteed for 110K and lasted much longer. If your car has top post battery terminals like in the thumbnail THEY DON'T NEED TO BE BOLTED TIGHT TO THE BATTERY. ONLY TIGHT ENOUGH TO STAY IN PLACE. I can't count how many times I've seen these get stretched out and useless because someone thinks every bolt on the car had to be really tight.

      Well, a system is anything that can be distinguishable encapsulated in terms of their function and nature, so it’s a fairly generic term that applicable to almost anything, conclusively, even the a set of systems is a system and if the set as a whole has the same system character, e.g. a car is a collection of systems with a well-defined function. The term only becomes ridiculous if you can’t define the system character, but besides that, it’s a perfectly useful term.

    If you're not going to drive your (modern) car for a week or more (time depends on make and model's chronic drain), put a trickle charger on the battery or at least recharge it before starting. A weak battery or one with a weak cell or two that allows the voltage to drop excessively during cranking can cause severe computer issues. In my own car, the engine floods, the ABS and VSC warning lights stay on, CEL may come on, etc. Other electrical gremlins are possible. If your battery is old and/or you're in a harsh environment, get it load tested.

    Back around 1988 I won a free brake job from Sears. No surprise, they found a lot of things wrong with the car while doing the brake job, including a need for a front end rebuild. I went to my regular mechanic, and small independent shop, for a 2nd opinion. The front end had no problems. Sears got busted nationwide for recommending unneeded repairs. A big scandal.

    Just a note on the electrical handbrake: if you lose power it will engage automatically, at least it does on mine.
    Found that out when my engine shut off and when I started back up I realised it was set.
    Also good to note that if for some reason you can't set it manually shutting off the engine will engage it and tapping the gas in drive will disengage it.
    I hope my mechanic can fix it (fingers crossed)

  • @Quacks0
    @Quacks0 Před 4 lety +1

    What you could do to preserve the car's memory would be to bring a small (like for a motorcycle or riding lawn mower) 12-volt battery with you, and use a lighter-plug to connect the battery to the car's lighter-socket just before you change the car's main battery. That way, you would keep the car's electrical system still powered up by back-feeding current through the vehicle's lighter-socket wiring, even with the main battery disconnected. Just be careful not to short out your secondary battery by accidentally touching the car's two battery-cables together, or by dropping the positive terminal onto a grounded metal surface.
