      It’s just something so adorable in that Roger, to you or me, is nothing special, but to the most beautiful toon he’s got it all.

      @robbiewalker2831 Před 7 měsíci +134

      @@KenadianKenough Yeah, Gary K. Wolf does in fact love the film, because when he made the original story, he didn’t think much of the animation angle, he was going by comic strips, which was taking over with Peanuts and Garfield. He thought that’s how a world of toons would be like, to the point of including dumb stuff like speech bubbles littered all over the floor every time a character speaks, or a toon being killed off the same way a human does.
      Speaking of Jessica Rabbit, although it wasn’t mentioned in the movie, it was mentioned in the book that she was a tiajuana porn character, so it’s canon that Roger Rabbit married a pornstar; Movie Roger is so lucky, he didn’t need a genie with monkey paw wishes to get Jessica.

    Donald and Daffy basically *had* to have a collab. The agreement the producers got from the rival studios was they could only use characters as long as their rivals counterpart didn't get more lines or screentime. So the official line from Donald is "Stupid little-" with Daffy cutting him off.
      But in that particular take, it sounds like "Stupid 'n-word'-".
      Disney definitely wouldn't approve of their characters says as much, so it's more a question of if it's just due to bad audio or whether the VA for Donald tried to slide it under the radar. After all, the Toons are meant to represent second class citizens, and the Ink and Paint Club is an allegory for old bars which catered to white people, but black people were only allowed in as performers or staff, not as patrons.

    4:30 They hint at it in the movie, but flat out explain it in the book. Appearance means almost nothing to toons, because they can look like anything. Status, now that means something. The toons don't consider Jessica to be a slam dunk like we would, they consider Roger to be the catch. This is because Roger is from a highly profitable gag cartoon, and Jessica is a pin-up girl. Imagine an A-List actor marrying a stripper and you've got an idea how they see it.

    You are right, this movie had an undertone of race discrimination with places where toons cannot enter as patrons but as entertainers and servers only, being displaced by someone else by trying to have a highway go through their neighborhood, etc.

    Fun fact: the animation director from Roger Rabbit, Richard Williams, only worked on this film for Disney bc they made a deal with him to help fund his passion project and magnum opus, The Thief and The Cobbler. Disney ended up reneging on their deal which left Williams pretty broke bc he worked on the film while taking big pay cuts bc he thought they would keep their promise and invest in his project. Unfortunately, the film was never finished before Williams passed away. There’s also a possibility Disney stole creatively from the aesthetics and characters of Thief and The Cobbler to create Aladdin. There’s no concrete proof of this but what’s kind of telling is that Disney acquired the rights to the unfinished film years later, through a shell company called Miramax, and released a bastardized cut of the film. Needless to say they heavily altered the film and the og vision of Williams, added songs, etc and it was a critical and commercial failure. Coupled with the fact that Disney was obviously aware of Cobblers production long before production on Aladdin began, makes you wonder 👀

    Roger Rabbit wasn't created for this movie, this is actually based off of a book by the same name, but with some differences in the overall plot. Funnily enough, the original author really like the movie and wrote a sequel book that incorporated some of the things that where used in the movie. Also the biggest rule of this movie when it came to using the Warner and Disney Toons was that they each had to have the same amount of screen time so that one company didn't overtake the other.

    There has never been another movie like this, and from all the attempts we've had so far, there will probably never will be another like it.
    This was done by hand, with cell animations and stage tricks. The closest they came to CGI was overlaying the loghting, which is what I think makes this movie so unique. Cartoons and live action have bern blended before, but never this seamlessly.

    Also there is one deleted scene where the detective already went to toon town to confront the villain and he had a big pig animated head, which explains the shower scene and makes you feel, something happened in between

    Yknow everyone talks about getting older and realizing all the time-specific metaphors going on in the movie (tearing up old neighborhoods for "modern" highways, the toons are basically a segregated minority trying to get by in a Hollywood that won't take them seriously/typecast them and live in a ghetto --weirdly adorable as it is-- they dont even own, etc) but I've always been more disturbed by the idea mentioned by Herman right at the beginning of the movie.
    The idea because Toons are "designed" (don't think too hard about the logic) they have an inherent nature they can't deviate from. Herman can't help falling into baby habits. Roger isn't being intentionally obnoxious; he *literally* can't resist stupid gags and potential comedic timing. It makes the scene where Jessica tries to explain that to Eddie, which he totally misses and turns into a joke, kinda depressing now; for Jessica she's not just a metaphor for sultry actresses who aren't taken seriously because of who they play, she literally can't NOT do things in an excessively flirty way.
    ...And also funnier shit like pattycake actually BEING pattycake cause that's 1) funnier 2) these are still "mainstream" cartoon characters so they probably don't get the concept of sex.

    I must say, considering how this is based off a book (Who Censored Roger Rabbit?) after giving it a bit of a read, the book and movie ARE NOTHING ALIKE. Let's just say the movie version of Jessica is much more tamer, there's a whole lot more gangster violence, but what happens to Roger is the biggest deviation. Not gonna spoil it, but I'd definitely recommend that you check it out and compare, maybe do a reaction to it too.
