Around 1992, we were in a 24th infantry convoy headed north on 95 leaving hunter (Savanah) The fuel stop was normal, the tail HEMMTT was also followed buy a blazer with a young LT and his caution light, convoy ahead sign. Parked on the right of 95, Our trucks were miles long. When the LT decided to move up to the front of the convoy his driver didn't check his mirror and pulled out in front of a F250 pulling a large saltwater boat. The F250 lost control, his boat pushing him to the right causing him to strike the left rear tire of the HEMTT at well over 60 mph. The Ford had its front right bumper under the rear passenger seat the boat took the cab off the F150. You could have loaded both the boat and truck on a 4x8 trailer when it was all done. The HEMMT took no damage, the large rubber tire absorbed the blow. Sad day for me seeing the carnage, but hell of a testimony to the HEMTT
This was my truck I operated for 2 years in Germany, with the 3/34 Armor, I hauled everything beans and bullets as they say, and I was an expert with the crane, and then got to see Hemmit unload for Desert Storm, after awhile from just driving that Truck for ever it seemed when I finally returned to the world I drove a car for the first time in over 2 years, out side of course a Humvee, but any way it felt very strange, but I loved that truck, operated her in all kinds of conditions and terrain, Black out drive was always interesting in that rig, in Desert Storm it was always Black out drive, got real used to that little bit of illumination given off by the front Black out drive light. But would love to operate one, one more time, often thought about finding one on surplus, but then what would I do with her, But nice video brought back many memories, I am actually looking at some photos on my wall right now two of me in the Hemmit when I was Germany, Go Big Red One!! 1st IDF Stuttgart. Its funny the one you guy's are operating in this video looks in better shape then the one's we had in our unit in Germany, I remember my panels where all rusty, I always had a hard time closing down the clamp to close the panel they where all of them bent from Army fork lift operators hitting them with there forks, and bending the panel, I can still here one those Privates yelling as I supervised the load, "SORRY" didn't mean to hit your panel, now I had to figure out how to secure the panel that is bent, sometimes I remember just having them use the forks to bend them back in, and try and requisition new parts from BEMO was a pain staking event, but I miss those days.
Joe Marco that’s very interesting...I bought a second one a long time ago that was from Desert Storm that was rusty and had bent up panels. I always wondered how they were damaged. I remember seeing the army guys faces when we rolled on their bases with our LVS’ and they’d be in aw over how tight the turning radius would be in comparison to their Army version.
At the time I bought my HEMTT, there were LVS for sale at about the same price. Basically a hydraulic system malfunction or blown hose, and you could jack knife... Suddenly the long rigid frame of the HEMTT didn't seem like such a drawback!
The LVS MK-48 in the Marines was a unique truck, that steering articulation they had was the same thing they have in the DA-1500.The one that had the fifth wheel hydraulic trailer would haul 870E trailers with tanks on them. They ended up retiring them because of the LVSR.The MK-48 all had 8V-92 TA's,they were retired right before Oshkosh began to introduce the MKR15-MKR18 and LVSR with C-15 ACERT's when they finally stopped using Detroits after they no longer were produced,so now they have Caterpillar.

I wonder what is the limiting factor for the highway speed of these vehicles? Is it because of the axle gear ratio? I would think the engineers designed then more for offroad capability and heavy load hauling than highway use.
yeah it has to do with the gearing, you would need taller gears for a higher speed. so its something like 5.43 gear ratio with and engine speed of 2200 rpm so rpm * tire size ---------------------- =mph trans gear ratio * axle ratio * 336 so itll be 2200x51.5+1x5.43x336=61mph few rpms more and you get your 65mh top speed. so yeah it was made for offroad use , dont need to be goin faster than that on the dirt anyways .
It can do 62, and that's about as fast as it should be. The tires are rated at 55, so it's nice to cruise at 55 and not have the engine running right at the redline all day.
It's more about limits/governors.The M977-M985 back then had no restrictions and you could run them at 65-71 MPH,and the 8V-92 TA in these are rate for 2,750 RPM.And then the Army got serious about safety and cautions so then, they put them only to do 2,100 RPM with a top speed of 55-62 MPH.

They're out there on the internet for free download... just Google 'HEMTT manuals'. There's over a dozen manuals total... the operator's manual is TM-9-2320-279-10
Over the whole 2,200 miles, I averaged an astoundingly good 4.2 mpg, so that's best case scenario of basically all-highway driving. Now that it's been home for a while, I can tell you that my average in more mixed driving is far less... closer to the advertised 2 mpg. In city driving around town, it gets less than 1 mpg.
Around 1992, we were in a 24th infantry convoy headed north on 95 leaving hunter (Savanah) The fuel stop was normal, the tail HEMMTT was also followed buy a blazer with a young LT and his caution light, convoy ahead sign. How much per tire? I have a Case MB 4/94 that I am looking for tires for...I always wonder!! LOL!!
I can't imagine what a Michelin dealer might charge, but you can get HEMTT tires on rims, brand new military surplus, for $300-$500 each.
This was my vehicle!!! 63 B w/ H8 ID. 356 Sig. Co. TROPO HEAVY!
Were'd the lane go, wasn't there a lane? That was a turn lane. What turn lane? BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Was this Riley?
How tall is the guy?
I got an original 44 deuce bought it in Denmark
Do you have a channel ?
I dig this Hemtt, but why would anyone want one besides a big toy? Just curious.
I'm always moving equipment, and heavy things like Diesel engines. Once you own a crane, you wonder how you ever got by without one. But it is mostly just a big toy...
is it possible to fuel it whit motor oil and vegetal oil?
You can actually use that in any diesel engine. But normal diesel is just fine with these.
Do I have to have a cdl to drive this if I were to get one?
Depends on the state and how it is registered... in some states, if it’s non-commercial or historic, no. In California... yes.
Who would want that with all that noise ,ear defenders statutory
Unlike many military vehicles, the HEMTT is actually very quiet... No ear plugs required.
There is a reason why Detroits are nick named "Screaming Jimmy".
Is there a place that sells or offers service manuals for these trucks?
They're out there on the internet for free download... just Google 'HEMTT manuals'. There's over a dozen manuals total... the operator's manual is TM-9-2320-279-10
What kind of highway mpg did you get? Looking at a m985...
How can someone buy one of these is there a specific place website or something to buy em ?
