i've driven M977's on 3 different continents. also 3 variants of the same truck. - the actual name is: Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) - 12L detroit turbo diesel (739cubic inch) engine neutered down to 400 hp. (these are the #'s taught in HEMTT school @ ft. leonard wood, mo) - air actuated accelerator SUCKS till it's broken in. a new one feels like you're either full throttle or not on the gas at all. - they get 2mpg... yup two, that's loaded or empty. - fuel cap. = 150 gallons - max stock speed = 62.5mph (don't change the governor to get more speed, you'll be sorry if you do) - the window on the floor on the drivers side, that's for fording water. it's also useful for knowing where the outside edge of your tire will ride on the road. - the crane is supposed to be able to lift 2.5tons. good luck with that, and be VERY careful of the sensors. - DON'T drop it in gear with the RPM's up. the transmission will kill the engine. - when making sharp turns the rear axles make terrible noises, this is normal. there are clutch plates in there to keep them from destroying themselves. - if you run it out of fuel the mechs will say you're F'd. just run the air hose to the vent line on top of the tank and pressurize the tank slightly. then have someone try to start it till the air is pushed out.

You are absolutely correct,except you are some what off on the engine.The 8V-92's in any Oshkosh were at 500 HP/1,470 TQ not 400 HP.The M977-M985 HEMTT had the 8V-92 TA and then the M1070 HET had a 8V-92 TT,so it was twin turbo charged AND super charged as well,but the HEMTT only had one turbo charger. They used the exact same 8V-92 TA for the LVS MK-48 and MKR-16 in the Marines,even before the LVSR,having the 92 Series too,came out and put the dragon wagon in to retirement,which the MK-48 had a MK-14 to MK-18 Hydraulic trailer for it and had steering articulation just like the DA-1500 fire trucks. Now,all of those trucks use Caterpillar,they all have a 600 HP 14.6L C-15 ACERT,espiecally in the M977A4-M985A4,but the M1070A1 how ever has a 700 HP C-18,being a 18.1L. I can't exactly remember the real number on the 8V-92,but I think it was 12.7L just like the 60 Series.
I drove one at Ft. Carson for 2 years. My roommate and I drove it off a 15’ straight drop then proceeded to drop at a 70 degree incline for another 500’. Got to the bottom and the fuel/water separater gasket blow at the bottom of the hill. Asst. section chief wasn’t too happy hehe
HEMMTs are awesome! I had 2 in my Assault and Obstacle section (aka platoon). They're a dream hauled every engineering module we needed and even more when we pulled trailers. Air ride and AC, what more could you as for on maneuvers and in combat
Paul C I’ve read that AC was part of an upgrade that included armor packages and a few other things. Makes sense, armor doesn’t help much if you have the windows down in the heat. And we couldn’t even get DEH to turn the AC on in the barracks. “It has to be 90+ for 10 days before we can turn it on.” 9 days of 90+ and 1 day of 89, no good.
@@NH2112 i never had AC while on deployment. and spent 2 summers in the s. korea hot completely without it. now... lol i have a separate window unit for my office along with the central air in my house. i keep it 68F in here all year round. 🙂

M977 with winch, rare as they were usually on the M985. Too bad these tires are crapola, you can get stuck in wet grass with these. Michelins were the best and even if they were directions they gave you traction.
Why do I think "zombie survival vehicle " when I see it? Fully enclose the flat-bed. Partition it, add home comforts like a bed, bedroom, living room and kitchen with all the relevant amenities and you're set. Zombie hordes, no problem. You just drive straight through them. Stop anywhere safe and sound. Unless they learn how to climb. 😲
HASSON454 Yep, the M985 was developed specifically for hauling MLRS rocket pods, which weigh a little over 5000lb each (I forget the exact figure, it’s been over 20 years), so the 3500ish pound M977 crane obviously wasn’t enough. They also have pod stops in the bed to help secure the pods.
So, I have a line on a cherry m985, I've been told these, as military trucks go, are fairly maintenance intense, especially the Detroit 8v92 in them...what's your experience so far? what's been your average and best mpg so far?
Well that person didn't lie haha you can't own one and properly maintain it unless you have heavy duty tools and shop or deep pockets. These things are very dependent on their air supply, no air no truck. Simply pressing brakes will eat close to 25-40lb of air as well as your throttle is air actuated. Detroits require special motor oil (straight 40w with low ash such as delo 40w) and don't like extensive idling but love high rpms but at the same time do require a warm up period. Expect close to $1000 in just fluid replacement the military used gear oil for transfer and axle and mixed motor oil for engine and tranny. You need to download military manuals but will also need to download the Detroit civilian manual as well to ensure a long life.

The LVSR is what came out after the LVS MK-48.
I had mine to 71 mph (first generation M977) when I was with 2/68 Armor in Baumholder. Then the Army took the fun out of them and clamped them down for slower speeds. The older the HEMTT the faster they went back in the 1980s and early 1990s. I loved passing the 37th Trans Group M915s on the autobahn who were mandated to drive 50KM an hour. What fun it was screaming past them.

Ungh! That's his business. The Company I worked for here in Australia had these Osh Koshs back in the early 2000s as support vehicles in the drilling industry. From memory i think they were ex United Nations units. Some even had the odd Bullitt hole in them. Noisy 500hp GMs.They were crowd pleasers and you'd often get people commenting at servos. Though loaded with drill rods and consumables they sat on their asses. Never really went the distance. We called them throw away military vehicles. The 8x8 MAN and Merc Actross Trucks were always better suited. Still! I do remember being young and happy as shit to drive one when I still had some hearing back then.

The winch was definitely a bonus, these are 1600 michelin tires and they're awesome in mud and sand so far.

maybe if it's empty. the crane is rated for 2.5tons but they have trouble lifting that much even when the arm is all the way in.
