I wouldn’t keep a hilux for a day let alone forever. My 2017 Ranger Xlt has 240000 kms and haven’t had to do anything apart from std servicing. Had a 2016 hilux before that and will never buy another one. Uncomfortable, slow money pits with way less kit than a Ranger. Not to mention every time my hilux pooped itself it was off the rd for days costing me thousands in lost revenue coz I couldn’t work. Pre 2016 hilux generations were the ones that go forever. IMO

You’ve obviously still have your 90’s Hilux (forever car)!
Toyotas just aren’t that much better anymore and you just can’t justify the price difference, and nearly no one keeps them for more than 5 years, especially those that buy them for tax purposes, which is a huge proportion of buyers.

    Paul,
These tests you guys carry out are great including the 4wd testing and towing vids - it would be a good comparison to put the approx onroad costs (as per the vehicle tested) against the vehicles as a perspective comparrison. After all, at some point it is a trade off in the decision making process for the purchaser between performance, suitability, comfort, reliability, towing capacity, cargo size etc etc against price - which can make a big difference in the outcome decision to buy.

You could make a pretty good argument that any Toyota is sold just because of the badge. They're not class leading in any segment They're also burning all their loyal customers with ridiculous price rises multiple times per year. There's going to be a massive fall in Toyota sales in the next few years once the Chinese and/or Indians get their act together.

I am Toyota fan and looking into buy a UTE upcoming December.
But, I noted even GR Sport or Rough are no upto latest interior improvements compared to the competitiveness, though I cannot expect similar lifetime, maintenance, endurance, some basic factors with my mind to keep the car for the next decade.
    What are your thoughts?
I believe I will travel minimum 10,000 - 20,000 per annum as the work vehicle with the ute. We have a Rav4 hybrid for personal uses at home that also drive 10,000 - 20,000 per year.
Some say, maintenance, lifetime depend on the user and usages plus brand/ make does not matter.
Can this apply with Raptor vs Hilux?
    Cheers

It’s a higher, wider, more off-road focussed 4 cylinder diesel Ranger.

@@generizze6243 The Ranger Raptor is a lot more fun and totally worth the extra money. The only reason you could have for buying the Hilux instead of the Ranger Raptor is because you can't afford it. The previous generation Ranger Raptor didn't deserve the 'Raptor' name, which is why I never bought one. But the current one definitely does. Toyota is still stuck in the past with a vehicle that can only compete with the previous generation Ranger Raptor. They are like Apple - they know people will keep buying the Hilux no matter what, so they don't bother improving it much. The same goes for the 79 series - totally overpriced and barely any improvements. I also waited ages for the new Land Cruiser 300 series before I bought one, because my 2014 LC200 was so similar to the newer ones, The LC300 is the first one in ages to actually be a significant upgrade, and I bet I'll keep this one for the next 10 years as well, because the updates will be so insignificant.

I have a 2015 Fortuner GX - 10 yr warranty on dpf and lifetime owner warranty on drivetrain issues to do with dpf / timing chain and a nice letter from Mr Toyota Australia apologising for the issues. After that class action re the dpfs…. And dealer replaced dpf (took 1 day) after I reported a puff of smoke on regen cycle “just in case” and video recorded a cold start timing chain sequence on record for future claims. This was all to reassure me the vehicle has ongoing backing by dealer. And its 5 years out of warranty… and, no, it cost me not one cent for the work / checking / cold start timing chain check and dpf. And no dealer network in Australia is better for remote regions. My other car is a GR Yaris….. anyway, reliability is the only relevant factor. I even wish my 8 yr old Fortuner GX had fewer electronics….

So, I'm a Toyota guy, I trust Toyota, I have a 79 V8 Land Cruiser and a Hilux Legend RS which is almost the same as the Rogue you guys get down under, and I would not trade either of them for a Ford. I don't have the confidence in Ford that I have in Toyota. That being said, I really want the new Ranger Raptor. It would be a perfect weekend toy. And unless Toyota come to their senses and put either the 3.3 or 3.5 V6 engines in the new Hilux, I'll probably be adding a Ranger Raptor to the garage in a couple of years.

@@nickwest2158 Unfortunately I've heard that a lot of them have been giving problems, a guy I know is currently waiting for an engine replacement, he asked the dealer about just getting a new vehicle since his only has around 1300km on the clock, but there seems to be a bit of a shortage. And I highly doubt that he drove it into the ground, he only drives in town and on the highways and tends to drive like a grandma on her way to church. I'm sure they'll iron out the niggles eventually, and then there should be kind of midlife update to address the issues that they have, and that's when I'll start seriously looking at one. They look amazing, sound great, and the performance is absolutely insane for what it is, but it's just not in my nature to be a test subject. Really hope they'll get the reliability sorted soon though.
