I think the real competitor to the Hilux GR Sport is the Ranger Wildtrack X with the V6 turbo diesel. I don’t think the GR Sport really competes with the Raptor.
No V6 in the X
None of them do, class of its own!
@@-zerocool- I agree. No one is even trying to.
Wild track x doesn’t come as a V6 does it?
Wildtrak x only comes in 2.0L Bi-Turbo, and that would easily hose the Hilux.
What I'm really after is the long term reliability and easy of looking for parts and DIY maintenance that can last for over 300,000 kilometers without major issue.
Well you need a Land cruiser
Not a modern Hilux
f me, its DRIVE, they are not in the business of doing super long term tests on what would then be old cars, that is not where they make their money from.
Go and watch some idiot youtubers crap on old cars.
Here is a tip, you want durable? buy Toyota from 20 years ago, but also get a good health care plan while your at it as that old crap will rattle your body frame.
Nah, the hilux does very good i've got a 2016 with 450 000 Km and i've never had an issue, i use it for farming work and to travel in a lot of dirt roads, i still think the land cruiser is very superior in the very long game like a million Km but the modern hilux is still really reliable@@antiwoke884
@@351tgv people are already counting on their future indigency.
then don't buy a car. use your legs and we will see if it can last 300k km. lol
21:11 - you forgot to mention that the Raptor will park itself. 22:26 - If you want an off-road sports car, then run to the Raptor. OK - I might be a little biased. My '24 Raptor is ridiculous (in a good way).
Yeah Toyota fans boys turned off road performance truck test into feul economy and parking challenge 😂😂😂
One is a $100k house deposit on wheels, the other is a sensible work horse that never lets you down.
By the time you put some proper off road tyres and a locking tub lid on the Toyota the difference in price is small.
Lol, whatever makes you happy.
Hilux SR is a workhorse, Hilux GR is a Raptor wannabe
Add a tub lid and better off road tyres to the GR and the price difference to the Raptor isn’t huge.
the GR isnt a workhorse. the Raptor is true to what it really is-- a toy. the real workhorse is a normal hilux
"This centre console doesn't shift around, at all"
proceeds to lift centre console by at least 1cm and cuts away before showing the side to side movement... 🤣
I thought I'm the only one seeing!😂😂😂
I also seen
This review it's kinda biased towards Toyota.
Come on. When you shake the gear lever centre control in the Toyota, you almost pulled it out?
That was the ranger
i saw that too...the hilux centre part was wonking
@@abdulkourouche5747you just blind lol
whos gonna be doing this to their car anyway? you don't want it to be rock solid. If you get into an accident i.e t-bone your knees won't be happy
Toyota might be outdated but looking for a rock solid built quality and reliability the Toyota is the go to option!
Why do you say the Raptor build quality isn’t as good?
That's it? Lol
And manual DPF burnoff
Maybe 10 years ago but the data shows the game has changed........ tough aint heritage its today Toyota has lost what made the legend
Outdated but also overpriced. By the time you fit better off road tyres and a tub lid it’s close to the Raptor in price.
The 2025 Hilux needs to deliver.
Traded in my Hilux on the new Raptor. Have to admit, I love it. This Raptor is in a different class. So far standing on 63000 km without any issue, of which 85% is gravel road. Don't think Toyota will see me soon.
Iv had many utes
And now got the Raptor, best ute since the last Maloo I owned, and best 4wd I have owned for sure
I’m only on 4700km 🤙
life changing yeah?
Get read for the whine to implode
@@StuartKarlson-qn8pj Like your spelling?...🤣🤣🤣
Oil return line failed yet? Blown up a diff? Diff housing cracked yet? How's the 2 piece pressed pulleys going?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"You can't get a square peg in a round hole so get the Hilux", so you can drink your chocolate milk!
Like that would be a deal breaker!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just wait till Ford tries to shove a square warranty claim in your round hole, something will break all right 😁😁
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA
Toyota fan boys know they can't compete with raptor so they turn a performance off road truck challenge into a mall parking challenge 😂😂😂
I was taken around a gravel track in the Raptor and it's very impressive, not the biggest Ford fan but if I could afford it I would buy one. Otherwise stick to my favorite Mitsubishi vehicles.
Twin locked with coiled Fox suspension vs leaf single locked Toyota suspension.
Yep - chalk and cheese.
The biggest letdowns for me with the GR Sport Hilux is the tub. No assisted tailgate (it's a heavy bugger), and no power socket. For the price of this flagship model, I think these should be included, as Ford have done in the Ranger and Raptor.
Any aftermarket suspension that can make the hilux more comfortable?
Woooow.....very informative vid again.........enjoying it all the way here in South Africa
We're happy you enjoyed it!
I test drove the new HiLux hybrid a couple of weeks ago (NZ). Was pretty disappointed at the ride quality, Terrible interior , Over rated stereo, No power outlet in the tub, paying extra for a towbar and tub liner and just general noise and vibration from a pretty average engine. Needless to say I didn't buy one. Going back to my 2019 Ranger 3.2 xlt felt like a Bentley by comparison . The Toyota really is just a very old design. Hopefully they have something a bit more special coming soon,.
Heart wants Raptor, head says GR-S
Great review Sam, thank you for your usual high standard of attention to detail. I'm a big fan of your work and appreciate the effort you put into your reviews. As a fellow enthusiast of manual transmissions, I'd love to see you review a manual transmission Toyota Hilux alongside a manual Ford Ranger. That would be a fantastic comparison for us stick enthusiasts!"
We don't have deserts here in Zambia(Africa),& gas/petrol here is more expensive than diesel so the Hilux is a winner!.the Ranger Raptor is just for novelty😂.if anything I'd go with a V6 diesel Ranger for smoothness.
Some common sense
I agree with you @chileshe. for longevity I would definitely stick with Hilux or Ford Ranger wildtrak these are adequate in my opinion
Yeah until V6 diesel engine crankshaft snap
They have a diesel Ford ranger raptor that would be better for you
then buy the previous gen Ranger Raptor or the FX4 Max which has Fox Shocks, both had the 2L bi-turbo diesel with 10-speed auto but was RWD with 4x4 High Ranger/Low range with only rear diff lock and torsion front LSD.
If the ranger raptor's suspension is that good, you can imagine how awesome the new 2024's ford Raptor (the big daddy) with a 5.7 v8 supercharged engine and double-valve fox shocks is to drive. It's a machine and a half.
Henry ford would have never imagined that ute's would become so good as vehicles, that they'd be better than most saloon & SUV's
would love to see a review on both utes with 200k on the clock .
The Raptor is in a completely different league. It's a pure bred racing truck - the GR Sport is just a bodykit. I don't know how they've managed to sell any of these.
Fan boys will be fan boys I guess.
And the hilux is in a class of its own
@@quagmiretoiletgaming78323It is. But not the overpriced GR trim.
ranger raptor ❤❤❤
For sale slightly used Ranger Raptor, never been driven hard off-road.
Bos coba reviw isuzu d max pasti y menantang
The Raptor also has park assist which would have helped you park better and the shopping hooks are above the rear seat. Just an all round better package…
hi lux is about $50,000 U.S. id buy it over, our new 2024 4cy turbo gas tacoma trd pro with dealer mark ups is $75k U.S. or $110,000 auz $ before on road, taxes etc. ,, Australia gets all the good 4x4s troopys , LC 70 series utes and the LC300 all diesels
why does the US Ranger Raptor get BF Goodrich K03s whereas the Australian one still gets the old K02s??!
Has the Ranger Raptor had a diff upgrade yet?
If you want a decent Hilux, you would buy the Arctic Trucks AT35. For me though, the Ranger Raptor is king of everything!
Just a hire Raptor for weekend(and return it on monday)and buy Hilux for keeps. You will be happy man.
Problem solved!
Um, I don't think so. Have you actually driven a Raptor off-road. I thought not.
Perfect solution
I think it is better to compare the Hilux GR sport with the PH spec Ranger Raptor which is not a V6 engine.
The GR sport III, can fight ranger directly as the ranger is a new gen and the hilux is outdated. They can invest much on this as they working on a new gen. They just sent this as a warning to all rivals to watch out on the coming gen
No central locking for the rear tub - wow big miss
Are u joking
With the Hilux you get 15k of savings to spend on fuel. That is a big advantage.
Do they really care about fuel cost when they choose RRaptor?
For family touring comfortable luxury ride and offroad ranger is king . for towing heavy loading heavy hilux is best for his reliability
Anyone thinking hilux is a better option just test drive a raptor.. I did both and was a Toyota fan.. I now drive a raptor and hilux has no chance in comparison
Bigger screen not necessarily better. Give me the smaller screen every day 😊
Yeah but that's not gonna happen. Next year I think the Hilux will be getting it's gen 9
its better😂
Hmmm.. Aren't these two belongs to different categories?
The Hilux tailgate doesn't have central locking??? For 75k???
Yeah what a joke.
With government wanting to penalize dual cabs based on there fuel economy let's just influence people into buying the worst gas guzzler of the lot.
No one is cross shopping between these two vehicles one is a short term toy and the other is a long term ownership.
Well said.
Best comment ive ever read
I used to owned a hilux, it’s not fun when u get overtaken by a van on Highway… since I’m not doing canning stock route every second months, I’m now a happier person in my new raptor 😂
The problem is the government, change them drive anything you want😂
Ford is better at all aspect when driving comparison but when come for repairing and maintenance Toyota is much practical and easier less cost but Mitsubishi Triton is much much better interm of maintenance costs
This gen's Hilux is obviously outdated, Toyota should generation change it to the latest Taco based new gen Hilux ASAP.
ranger raptor ❤

Weird the GR sport is cheaper than the TRD pro tacoma and its better. Almost like Americams are getting ripped off.
outdated, all plastic interior/exterior, less powerful, leaf springs, rides like a tractor. Tell me how is the GR sport superior to the TRD Pro Tacoma?
Hola muy bueno el video,la Ranger raptor es muy deportiva , para uso diario me parece mejor la Hilux saludos desde Córdoba Argentina 😊
¡Gracias por tu comentario! Hola desde Australia
Thank you for the review
Raptor all the way. Actually I'd buy anything but a Toyota
Are you from America🌈
@@ItsMe-pz9mk Australia mate
mitsubishi triton win
If you want to go to the mountains, take a Ranger. If you want to get back home, take a Hilux. That says it all.
Please just quote on road costs.
Unfortunately because of the differences in on-road costs in each state and territory (up to $4000 difference on vehicles like these) it's not possible to quote the on-road prices easily. We use pricing before on-road costs as a more easily comparable baseline.
Why is the Hilux interior not getting more criticism??!! It is the ugliest and cheapest thing I've ever seen. Quite literally *8 years old*. No major upgrades since 2016. The worst part? It's 75k. At least in the Raptor it's priced according to it's quality, capability and tech. I can spend 30k on a Mitsubishi and get 5 times the interior of the Hilux. Not to mention that there's no upgrades to the drivetrain, and it's still leaf sprung. It's literally just a body kit. The next gen needs to do better.
Definitely biased towards the hilux.
Why does an $89k vehicle not have a soft opening tailgate? You should be able to let it go and it drops slowly and softly without a bang. Crikey - ALL Utes should do this. It’s like soft close drawers in the kitchen.
I’m not really sure why they talk about tyres much as these are a consumable item and you as choose any tyres you want - even when you buy it. You just tell the dealer to fit the tyres you want before purchase. The factory tyres aren’t a requirement - almost no one keeps them anyway.
Parking any Ute is a cakewalk. I drive a 6.6m long BoxTruck in the city and it’s easy to park - without a rear mirror too.
Rangers tailgate are spring loaded, hilux’ one just drop like a dumbbell… but either way, u can get a aftermarket gas strut for both car for about 100 bucks, it will turn to softclose tailgate
I bought my SR5 3yrs ago at the time it was suggested to me to look into the raptor before buying.I didn’t I only had SR5 in mind and now I have been in a mates Raptor and then looked into them I regret not buying one and instead going with the hilux, yes the SR5 is a high quality 4wd Ute that doesn’t miss a beat but even a all option SR5 is a basic bitch compared to a Raptor the info system in the hilux is a Nokia 5110 to the Raptor iPhone the difference between a 2024 hilux and a 2016 version…sweet fuck all
last raptor design much better
I think the V6 Ranger is a more natural competitor to this Hilux than the Raptor
8.6 l per 100 km in my Toyota
15,5 smiles per 100m in my Raptor😂 nothing beats that👊
@@catchawakeup6411 can’t beat them smiles, had mine for just over 6 months now and still feel like a kid with a new toy when I go to hop in it
So the Hilux GR Sport is better at being a ute then the Ranger Raptor. It can tow more, haul more and is more fuel efficient on top of it all.
oh stop being stupid.
Its good when the cabin and tray locks separately because valuables are less likely to be stolen from the tray in case of a break in
I thought the ranger raptor has 400 HP?
The 292kW Ranger Raptor works out to 392HP, close but not quite 400HP.
Buying a toyota is fine but buying a top spec hilux is like trying to get yourself scammed. Raptor offers way more for basically similar price.
Sam I love the effort you and the team put into these videos, but please this is a stupid comparison.
The Hilux GR Sport is no competitor to the Ranger Raptor and you know it, a more fair comparison obviously is Hilux GR Sport v Ranger Wildtrack X (which is sold out).
The Ranger Raptor clearly sits alone in its own market segment.
Also since you guys insist on doing such comparisons then why was the Nissan Navara Pro4X not included (not the Warrior version)? Granted the Navara wont win anything other than maybe metro ride (due to coil spring rear suspension) but it still should of been included.
Hardly a fare comparison one is $20,000 more !!! Ie the $95,000 Raptor
Worth every $ more. Even if the GR is 40k cheaper, I will still buy the 95k Raptor
It's crazy that the Toyota is so expensive, some wheel arches and a few badges.
I'd take Toyota Hilux,it's the better Ute between the two as it is diesel and múch more reliable than the raptor.
Toyota is 15yrs back on the interior which make me hate it….when I have a car I spend 95% driving it inside so the interior is very important I need to be comfortable and happy the other 5% would be used when locking the car and turn back to see how beautiful it is….So Toyota it’s a big turn off for me it’s interior.
Ford really need to do a FORD EVEREST RAPTOR - not everyone needs or wants a ute - the reality is most people do not need a ute and would be better off not wanting one!
they did the Everest Wildtrak X which is probably the equiv to the standard T6.2 Bronco Wildtrak but in turbo diesel spec.
Hilux is like Nokia. Stayed in the past. Ranger is like iPhone. I have a late SR5 2020 and without the GR red, you couldn't tell there is 4 years difference.
Mate, those wheel arch flares on the Hilux are hideous 😂
Toyota doesn't even have lumber support in 2024 or dual zone air con... Your 2024 GR is no different to my 2016 V6 ... except for price 😅
Hilux workmate with 2.4 engine can do all of this 1/2 the price
Buy the hilux Rogue, comes with electric roller shutter, removable marine carpet in tub, better interior. Dont get the GR. Put in a 3" lift suspension kit $3.5k, new, bigger rims, tyres $5k, dyno it $1k, front locker $1k....you've got a very good ute, that you've added your own custom too that drives very well and it's still cheaper then the Raptor and does 10.5l/100 instead of 16l/100. It has a higher tow capacity and weight capacity.
Why keep comparing these to Hilux is nowhere neer the Raptor
the $20,000 price difference. is a bit steep. and Toyota has better resale value.
Toyota STILL has 1990’s appeal & aesthetics.
Looks as though they outsourced the design of it to China.
Es comparar un coyote con un correcaminos no tienen comparación
The real competitor for the RAPTOR is TOYOTA TACOMA or TUNDRA not HILUX.
Definitely buying a hilux because it will hold my chocolate milk carton. Wtf?😂😂😂
Ranger FX4 MAX is better than the Hilux GR Sport in terms of comfort
HILUX GR SPORT VS WILDTRACK X
I’m a regular 4X4 driver, too much technology, does not mix with sand, mud, and water , Give me a Hilux any day
I DO'NT LIKE THAT BIG SCREEN
Toyota fan boys turned off road performance truck challenge into feul economy and parking challenge 😂😂😂
Who the hell uses square cartons?
Toyota needs to put their 3.5 turbo from the land cruiser and the lx600 in the hilux , until then toyota will be behind
Wrong comparo to start with
there are 15000 reasons why you are ccomparing the wrong car
No comparison. Compare the GR sport to to Ford Wildtrack and the wildtrack will win hands down.
Toyota is milking old tech with add ons for years now. The Raptor can’t be compared to this outdated aged tech. Sorry
Choose the Hilux if you drink flavoured milk!!! 🤦♂️
😂😂😂
the gr has to b a joke right a whole extra 10 kw big fk whoop and an interior inferior to a 1990 corolla
GR sport Hilux?😅😂 that’s wrong competition for Ranger Raptor
it should be a Gr-yaris equivalent for Hilux instead.
gR sport are like cosmetics
I know you did mention it..but it really bothers me that everyone forgets that this current 8th generation hilux was first released back in 2015 and of course as you said it has undergone facelifts etc but really not much has changed, so of course its behind in really every way, but its proven and reliable. Unfortunately all these carmakers dont release their new models/generations in sync so they are never really an apples for apples comparison. So of course the ford is far fancier inside and more up to date with tech etc, but when toyota finally release a 9th generation then we can do a better comparison. Fords have always had a niggly reputation for reliability and build quality issues, they seem to prioritise leading tech and stance over reliability
Very easy to answer this question - the Ford Ranger Raptor is much better and a far superior vehicle to the Toyota HiLux GR Sport. The Toyota HiLux GR Sport is absolute TRASH and there is really no comparison between these two vehicles. The rear suspension on the Toyota is absolutely AWFUL and the ride quality is abysmal - there actually is no ride quality, it's painful. The engineering on it is archaic and agricultural compared to the Ford. I've driven it so this is my opinion. In contrast the Raptor has - modern rear suspension design and much higher quality and higher performance dampers; a 4auto mode for superior all weather traction on wet and snowy roads where 4H can't be used, compared to being limited to 2H or 4H in the GR Sport; V6 engine instead of a 4 cylinder engine in the GR Sport; the Ford engine is petrol which is what you want for an off road performance vehicle, compared to the Toyota which is a diesel (and if you didn't know you should avoid diesel unless you really need it because it contains some of the most carcinogenic substances known to mankind); higher quality and more insulated interior cabin; significantly bigger wheels and tyres; the all terrain tyres have a 3PMSF severe snow service rating while the GR Sport does not; the Ford also has a front locking differential so it has 3 locking differential and the Toyota only has the 2 locking diffs; the list probably goes on. There are no doubt more differences but there is really no comparison between these vehicles. The Ford Ranger Raptor is an expensive vehicle but it is an extremely good vehicle. The Toyota HiLux GR Sport is also an expensive vehicle but it is an absolute rip off because it is lacking so much of the fundamental performance engineering of the Ford Ranger Raptor. You'd be an idiot to get the Toyota.
The Hilux SR5 is wayyyy better then the GR sport
Toyota Fanboys are crying over this video.
Really?? 😂😂😂
how does Toyota think interior is acceptable in 2024 🤣
Ford dropped the ball by not putting the V6 diesel in the Raptor.
My Ranger Sport V6 is an absolute beast, but would be awesome in Raptor form, petrol is useless.
Petrol is king, I hate all diesals. All my diesal cars I hate. This is Coming from someone who owns a nextgen raptor
Ranger is far away ahead , there is no comparison ranger is hilux kilker
I bet there is no chance Toyota would let you take it on the same offroad dirt course you put the Raptor through.
A GR Hilux 2024 is more comparable with the 2021 Ranger Raptor.
China raptor. No thanks. Im on outdated reliable hilux.😅
Toyota is going to unveil/launch a New 2025 Toyota Hilux later this year or early next year. I suggest to potential buyers of this Toyota GR SPORT to at least be patient and wait for a new Toyota Hilux which I believe will be better than this GR SPORT.
Come on man... It's not 90's anymore. Toyota toughness is just propaganda. This vehicles really don't compare. Toyota don't have the chassis, remember the moose test? Same shitty chassis that can't handle anything serious. I worked at a Toyota dealer for almost 4 years. The Ranger was the better vehicle in the previous Gen, now it's even better and Toyota is just trying to, and Failing to, copy Ford.
Hilux for the hardcore.
If you want your money worth buy hilux, ford ranger raptors are for k-pops
