I've been following you for years now, and your vulnerability and honesty have always been my favorite things about you. Please don't listen to all that negativity! Your lists are unique and different - that's the best thing about them. THANK YOU for being such an inspiration to those of us out here who need some encouragement to be vulnerable and show our own quirky sides as well!
Me too same here
Ain't she the coolest!
Thank you so much Haley!
Well said Haley. Emma is the best ❤
Same. I have gone through so many other horror reviewers but I keep coming back to Emma because it's never just recycled opinions.
My two favorite non-horror movies of this year are “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon”
I absolutely love that this channel introduces me to films I otherwise would never had heard of due to lack of marketing or awareness of the film circuit. Thank you so much for bringing attention to such interesting movies. I'm already updating my watch list.
Thanks pizzaaaaa
Sanctuary is such a gem. Margaret Qualley absolutely owns that role.
Yes girl tell them, thats the sass energy we want in 2024 💅 Barbie was first place for me as well this year, such a great movie but also cultural phenomenon.
Good evening, Alice. Nice to see you here!!! 😜😜😜
Hell yeah👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Aw emma im sorry people were so critical of your last video!! I for one loved how unique your choices were. I love how you give such a spotlight to horror films people may not be familiar with.
Excited to see whats to come in 2024!!
Great list Emma. I don't understand people who feel like they are so self-important that no one else could possibly have a different opinion from them. How do you get through life? HOW?!
hahaha
Love that you included "Sick of Myself"! Between this and "Dream Scenario" Kristoffer Borgli is on a must-watch list for me. And you're totally right, "Fingernails" is soft-core Yorgos!
Thanks for sharing this list and your top ten horrors too. You keep bringing good things to my attention and so I'm always glad and thankful for your videos.
thank you so much Steven
I can’t believe people really take your PERSONAL top 10 that serious. Then to say you got paid to put films on your list is crazy. Do they not take you as a person with a lot of integrity? That’s what I like about you is your honesty. They gotta be new to this channel to even think something like that. Anyway rant over loved this top 10 list. Seen a few of these and also have a few on my watchlist already. I just watched Saltburn on New Year’s Eve and it’s definitely my top 3 non horror movie of last year it could be my number 1 tbh.
wooo! and thank you!
I can't believe people were upset at you top 10 list!!! is your own top ten!!! the magic of movies is that one film can reach thousands of people differently. im quite squimish with horror and what i love about your channel is that i never feel less if I can't watch or finish something, not everything is for everyone and that's alright. sending you lots of love emma
Thank you for including Sick of myself! You’re the only other list I’ve seen to include it
I love that Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself, Dream Scenario) is on both your horror and non-horror lists this year. He's a really promising director and I can't wait to see what he does next.
My favourite non horrors this year are Poor Things and The Zone of Interest. Other contenders would be Perfect Days or Bottoms.
That confirms it, I have to watch Saltburn now. Heard nothing but high praise so far. Also thanks for the honest picks and highlighting lesser known films that deserve spotlight. I’ve found so many amazing films that have become my favorites because content creators like you speak about them.
I can definitely say The Passenger was my favorite non horror of 2023 (though I’m seeing people lump it as a horror). Kyle Gallner and Johnny Berchtold just brought it with their performances. So simple but a crazy thrill ride.
Also I somehow fell in love with Killers of the Flower Moon even though I saw it at a midnight showing before I learned it was over 3 hours long. There was a lot I didn’t like about that movie, but Scorsese did it to me again and caused me to fall in love with another film of his.
Beyond grateful for you revealing/reminding me of so many interesting movies I’ve yet to discover in this list! Watched Past Lives last night - heart wrenching! And had no idea (one of both of) the Duplass brothers were back. Been a fan of theirs from the mumblecore days and glad to hear this may have a similar tone. Also I appreciate that your horror list was personal (and interesting!) It was surprising not to see one or two of the more acclaimed movies; but again you’ve offered unique ideas and scares to discover, thank you. Where’s my fave no one will save you tho!? Jk 😂
Emma-Ignore all the knuckleheads! Your content is amazing!
It was no surprise to me, or anyone who knows me, that Across the Spider-verse was my number 1 this year :P
I got to show The Holdovers (my #3) to my parents over the holidays, and they loved it as well!
I liked spiderman too! and TMNT was also amazing!
1. Poor Things
2. Salt burn
3. Barbie
4. Aloners
5. Monster
7. Anatomy of a Fall
8. May December
9. Eileen
10. Bottoms
11. Dicks! The Musical
12. Sanctuary
13. Asteroid City
14. Sick of Myself
15. The Five Devils
16. The Boy and the Heron
17. The Cow who Sang a Song into the Future
18. Falcon Lake
The world would be so boring if all our top ten were the same. Love you, Emma!
May December edged out The Holdovers for my Top pick of 2023. The three leads are all fantastic. Glad both made the cut on your list Emma.
I appreciate that you see a lot of non-horror indie/arthouse films that a lot of people skip over. I follow your instagram stories and see you head to the cinema to see a bit of everyrhing which is refreshing, and you do patron videos on those films sometimes which is great! It's just nice when people can appreciate films that don't have that huge marketing budget to bring in crowds. Looking forward to another year of your content!
thank you so much Miranda!
Well, thanks for my new watch list! 😀 I've seen _Saltburn_ and _Barbie,_ and I watched _May December_ the other night up to a _certain_ point. I'm working on the courage to continue because, for me, it was very triggering. We're talking PTSD-level triggering. 'Nuff said. Anyway, happy New Year, and I'm wishing you all the best as you heal.
Also loved Saltburn and Barbie! Gonna have to check out the others on your list!
We love you Emma! You share your voice and don’t let the negativity get you down!
thank you Jamie!
It's so wild some people think it's okay to take over the narrative when it's your own personal top 10 movies! In no form do you say it's a universal top 10. Most of us are smarter than that though and we love you and your reviews. Happy New Year 😊
I just want to say that what I love most about your channel and you, the reason why I always come back - is your vulnerability, authenticity, combined with your kind respectful nature. All of this together is absolutely refreshing, and I believe it's desperately lacking in society. So, I for one sincerely thank you for being you and for sharing yourself and your passion for movies and other media with us. You are an amazing human bean Emma 😊 I also love this list of your personal favourite non horror films! You always give me something new to watch. I'm very grateful! 😁❤️
Thank you for the comment on the May December score - it reminded me so much of how the music in The Shining was used! So good.
Keep up the good work spooky you are very much appreciated.
Thank you so much for sharing this list with us, Emma. It's too bad that you've had to deal with "internet drama", but for those of us fans who have watched your channel grow over the years know how honest you are. We all have our individual likes and quirks, especially in the horror community. Certain sub-genres I really can't handle well, but you show a great love for them and that's great. There are a number of films that I never would have tried to watch if I hadn't seen your review/recommendation.
I've seen both "Barbie" and "The Holdovers" and I agree that they were both great. With over a billion dollars at the box office, "Barbie" was by far the most popular film of the year, so there is no reason to feel ashamed at giving it your #1 rating. Barbie made over ten times the amount of box office that my favorite film did. It had heart, an original story, wonderful set designs, strong cast, and lots of laughs. I was not the target audience, and I had a great time watching it.
I'm the 100th person to like this video! Woo hoo! I love that you do a non-horror list as well. I really was blown away by Barbie and Saltburn and Fingernails this year. Can't wait to see The Holdovers!
Emma, I love your channel and your lists because even when you include entries or recs that I didn't like, you discuss your rationale in ways that make it easy to understand why you included it for YOUR list. Or reasons why it would or wouldn't be intriguing and you do it without callously revealing twists, without sometimes even blatantly saying there are twists, and still give enough info to pique interest re: films. Oh and Barbie was my fave non-horror pick this year, too!
wooo thanks Emma, im just here to recommend movies i understand they wont work for everyone which is why i say things like "check out this film if youre into ..." we all like different stuff!
The Holdovers was my favourite film of 2023! Every second just felt like watching an instant classic, it was so emotional but also so funny and the way the relationship developed between the three leads was so organic and sweet, plus the performances were incredible!
I swear, being online and anonymous can really bring out the worst in people. If someone can't be nice, please move along! I really appreciate all of your vids and commentary. I am constantly taking notes and learning about movies I wasn't even aware of. And a huge "thank you" for explaining what the buzz for Barbie is all about! The trailer made it feel like a typical goofy comedy, so I had no idea that it was full of heart and substance. I kept hearing it was good, but I didn't know WHY. Now I do, and you've compelled me to give it a watch. 🙂
My husband and I discovered your videos in 2020 and you've been a staple in our movie watching lives ever since! Whenever we see an ad for a horror movie we'll always come to your channel to see what you've thought of it. You're one of our favorite comfort watches and appreciate how much you watch and your thoughts on all of it! Because we've been following you for a few years now, we even know when you'll probably like a movie we didn't or vice versa because your taste is so clear - and that's what makes watching your videos so great! Anyway, wanted to add some positivity here and tell you how much you're appreciated to a dorky married couple in Brooklyn. Stay true to yourself!
It’s always so difficult for me to think of top 10 lists for the year because I always spend so much time catching up on films from previous years and it all blends, but I watched a lot of your list and enjoyed every one.
Looking forward to trying the others I took note of.
Thanks, Emma. Virtual hugs for your grieving process. Take care of yourself.
Thanks for both lists, Emma! I actually appreciated your horror movie list so much because I find it so different from a lot of other lists I found online. 😉
thank you!
Thank you for all your hard work!!
Sending love Emma! People should be excited to see other people speak passionately about what they like and that’s why I tune in. Especially since I don’t always know about some of these movies prior to your videos. Keep it up!
Loved this list 💕
Screw anyone that comes to channels to be judgy and rude! We love our Emma and her opinions!
Emma, just watched Biosphere and Saltburn back to back as per your recommendations and had an excellent movie night with my friends. Thank you, both excellent movies! Going to search out some of the others from your list and watch those next! Also, just wanted to mention I watched some Gypsy Rose Blanchard movies from your suggestions a while back and wanted to let you know Gypsy was just released from prison and has done an interview with Good Morning America. Thought you might be interested if you didn't already know. Thanks for all your recommendations - i'm always finding movies not mentioned elsewhere on your channel. Have a great new year and stay safe!
I love the fact that we had both of Kristoffer Borgli's movies on our tops ♥
Love your unapologetic and honest lists. You really have a great taste in horror and films in general.
Emma, I’ve been watching your channel since maybe day 1 ish! You are def one of my favs because 1) I know I can trust your reviews/recommendations and 2) I can see how much love and effort you put into this. Don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang.
Love your fearless attitude towards expressing your opinions about movies, insightful and knowledgeable reviews and I highly appreciate your recommendations. Please keep doing what you are doing, cause you are essentially and quite literally helping me cope with life as a diagnosed with PTSD person. My personal favorites from your recommendations are You won't be alone, Martyrs, Black Swan, Hereditary, Theater of Blood, The Handmaiden(Ah-ga-si), Caveat, Possum, Stoker, Neon Demon,House(Hausu) and lastly the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover. Although I have closed myself off from life and it's experiences,I have opened up intellectually to the vast catalogue of offerings the world of entertainment has to offer and you are my number 1 to go to as I previously mentioned above for making the right choice regarding what is Worthy of my time. You have my deepest respect and I additionally wish you well and strength to go through this period of grief in your life. I also wanna wish to those who are consciously choosing to be mean and impolitely expressing themselves towards Emma to mess with me and throw their pent-up daily frustrations of life on my shoulders. Waiting for the next new content you upload. 💐
I´ve only seen three of these films, but they are all on my top ten list from 2023l: Barbie, Past lives and Saltburn. I especially liked Past lives, perhaps because it was so different from what kind of movies I usually watch. It was really beautiful and moving. One of my favorites (maybe the best non-horror of 2023) is Anatomy of a fall. I recommend it if you haven't seen it.
Love your lists, because I always find something new to put on my to watch-list. Thanks for the great work you do!
Thanks for the List and Video 😀
Oh Emma. you are 10000000% entitled to your own opinions, i am sorry you got hate from people who disagree. i love your channel and recommend it to many of my film loving friends, you bring something very cool and unique to your videos.
Love you so much Emma! Glad you loved May December as much as I thought you would. The haters can bugger off!
I saw Past Lives and May December back to back at a film fest and and even got to attend a Q&A with Celine Song
I love your videos and always enjoy hearing your recommendations. Please keep doing what you do. I am here for it.
Oh Emma , I’m so sorry people left comments on your top 10 horror list that were derogatory. I rarely post comments anymore because there are so many and I doubt mine will be seen but in this case I have to. I’ll keep it brief. This is your channel and your opinion. I have always admired your opinion. Whether you like a movie or not the reasons are intelligent and well thought out. Years ago I recommended Mulberry Street to you for your movie suggestions series. You didn’t like it and that’s totally fine. I didn’t turn against you or leave an immature comment. Please don’t take those comments to heart. You’re brilliant and honest. We all have movies that not everyone likes and that’s so important for diversity. Keep up the amazing work and big hugs to you ❤
I always love your list Emma! Thanks for putting some film on my radar adding to the ever growing backlog 😅
haha no problem!
I had totally forgot about Sick of Myself! I had been unable to make it to the cinema to see this movie so I'm delighted you've reminded me to watch! Thanks!
Ignore the haters. They'll always be around, unfortunately. I love your content and points of view. We all have our own likes & dislikes. Keep smiling. 😊
Thank you so much for sticking with me for all these years! 3 years wow!
Really enjoyed your list, Emma! A few of these are already on my watchlist, so I guess I know what I will be watching next. Thank you! :)
Thank you!
I love your videos, I really come here for new movies recommandations, keep up the excellent work, and happy 2024 !!! Kisses from France !
You know this already but with any 1 hater comment, there are 1000's of us who adore you.
Personally your channel and others got me thru such a dark time and so grateful for you and your contributions.
AND I loved Barbie too!
Thank you ❤️❤️
I watched When Evil Lurks because of your last video and I loved it!! Great film to start off the new year! 😊
I think youre by far the best reviewer on CZcams, and one thing I especially is how truthful you are and how excited you get when reviewing a film. Try youre hardest to pay no attention to these bozos, they're just miserable with themselves. I hope you have a wonderful beginning to your 2024!
You've always made it clear at least to me that these were YOUR favourites and what YOU thought were great film watches. but there are always THOSE people that think they know better.
It’s one of the reasons I watch you! I want opinions and ideas of movies I might like or missed. Thanks for sharing!
I come here for your honesty and in depth approach to reviewing films. I am never disappointed.
I love your channel and how honest and authentic you are! I'm brazilian, and when I talk about you to my husband I refer to you as "my australian friend" 😊. Please ignore these mean coments, you are important to many of us ❤
Hey Emma. Been watching your channel for a while, but it's my first time commenting. First off, Happy New Year and I hope 2024 is a better one for you! Also, I wanted to say that while I don't always agree with your taste, you are the CZcamsr I trust the most for a UNIQUE recommendation. So, thank you very much for being WHO YOU ARE!
Thank you!
@@spookyastronauts You're welcome! And I also wanted to add how much I enjoyed hearing your take on Talk To Me. Glad to hear they kept it "Aussie." It was my favorite horror movie of the year. VERY interesting culture you've got going on down there!
I really enjoy your videos, Emma. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and highlighting so many varied and lesser known films. Just these passed few months, I watched and thoroughly enjoyed Raw (2016), Gerald's Game (2017), A Ghost story (2017), Unsane (2018), Nine Days (2020), Sanctuary (2022) and the Stranger (2022) based on your recommendations. Still quite a few on my watch list as well ^^p thanks so much for that. My favourite films of 2023 were Godzilla Minus One, Across the Spider-Verse, Past Lives, Talk to Me, Suzume, The Creator, Asteroid City, Oppenheimer, John Wick IV, TMNT Mutant Mayhem. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Much love from Belgium.
Nice list, I’ve missed some of your picks and will add them to my watchlist
Hope you like them!
Loved Barbie and Saltburn, thanks for informing me of other must watch films
Enjoy and be well
Thank you so much for sharing these! I may not always agree with your opinion, but I always find it interesting. I always find something new to watch! Your reviews are always so intelligent and insightful! I appreciate you so much!
If you started pandering to us, I wouldn't watch. I swear I'm the only person that hated Saltburn. Thank you for your honesty.
Sanctuary has to be my favorite film of the year. I felt a full range of emotions lol.
I love you Emma!!! of course Barbie was our fav this year💖
I only discovered your channel a few months ago, but you are now in my top 3 reviewers channels you do a great job, and definitely have interesting views and thoughts, Peace from the UK 👍
thank you!!
You are wonderful to watch. My favorite part of your videos is that you voice your truth. I value your opinions or else I wouldn't watch every video. Don't listen to the haters. They are wrong!
I was so happy to see Fingernails in your list, it's also in my top 10 of 2023. I honestly don't get why it hasn't been talked about more. It's a nuanced and quirky examination of love with wonderful performances and I loved it.
32 year old I saw a lot of films this year and the one film I thought was so worth it that I even took both my boys to watch it was Barbie and we were delighted with how good the movie was. It’s number of 2023 for me
My top 10 non horror of 2023
1. All of us strangers
2. Poor things
3. Past lives
4. Anatomy of a fall
5. The holdovers
6. The zone of interest
7. Oppemhimer
8. Barbie
9. Killers of the flower moon
10. One fine morning
I haven’t seen Barbie 🥲 need to take a break from horror lol
Happy new year Emma!💖
I have not finished the video yet, but I enjoy how different your imput is in regards to other films, thanks to you I have been able to find some non-conventional movies that I truly enjoyed.
Even thought they are times your opinions is different to mine, I always look forward to your reviews because I find them to be very smart and thoughtful.
I am sorry about those who left mean comments in your videos but I am glad it didn't deter you from making this one 😂 fuck them haters.
Have a great 2024 ❤🎉
Great review barbie movie was fun to watch in my theater saw it in July 2023😊
yeah same!
I LOVE your reviews even when I don’t agree with them!! ❤ It’s a shame people have to be mean about it, just don’t let it get to you. I cannot tell you how many great movies I might have missed out on if it wasn’t for your channel!
It’s so funny to me how I started watching this video and I was like who are those evil people who disagree with you and leave mean comments??
And when I saw what is your number 1 movie I was like WHAAAT?? Barbie is the biggest disappointment for me this year!! Hated it and I’m a huge Barbie fan/ collector..
But it’s actually completely fine to disagree with someone and it’s fun that we all have different tastes and opinions..
Even though I usually agree with your opinion and really like your taste in movies!
Wish you a lovely new year and I’m looking forward to all the new content 🩷
Pay no attention to those hate comments on YOUR PERSONAL opinions.
Some people are just that weird. it's ridiculous🤣
I always like hearing what your favourite films are, ESPECIALLY when they are not the same as mine. You always give good reasons fir your views, and you are one of the best film critics on the internet. We are all lucky to have your videos, and many of us are very grateful for them.
This is so nice thank you!
This is the first year in a while that our number one horror movie selection did not match up. However, our number one NON horror movie absolutely matched. 'Barbie' - what an amazing surprise I had when I initially watched it! I loved everything about it...an absolute gem.
Thank you for your great end of year lists, and all the other excellent lists you bring us.
Went to see May December in the theater, and my audience actually laughed quite a bit - Moore's character makes some wild statements that she fully expects everyone to just accept, and I think we laughed out of discomfort. The melodramatic score also got some laughs, like the heavy stinger on Moore being upset about running out of hot dogs. I think 'comedy' is appropriate, but VERY dark comedy.
Hey Emma, I have a rule about any criticism I give online; never say things in a way you wouldn't if that person was standing in front of you. Especially if that person is being as enthusiastic and personable as you are. I consider people who take a kind of manic glee in callously slagging off others and their tastes with a cow's block of salt. I try to remember that they have a problem, and like road rage, these people are not who they are not being themselves. People who write things like 'that's not horror!', 'what a stupid choice!', or 'are you an industry shill now?' really haven't learned to communicate like adults yet. This doesn't excuse them, it's just something to remember, since these people are a bit like comment quicksand. Once they detect a reaction, they tend to worry the replies like a dog with a bone.
Emma I don't always agree with everything you say, (believe me) but I always appreciate your thoughts and insights and the really hard work you put into these videos. So bon courage!
What an amazing list, Emma!!! I'm so proud of you! Lol. You have a good eye. BARBIE WAS EPIC! And SALTBURN.... I can't even....Lol. Don't let the haters get to you girl! I SOOO look forward to your reviews. More subbed in 2024!!! ❤
I will never understand people. How is it even possible to get upset about another persons opinions, what a colossal waste of time. Do they feel like another persons taste somehow taints their own? Honestly, people make my head hurt...
Thank you for talking about such a wide variety of movies, I have discovered so many movies I would never have heard of if it wasn't for you. I watched "Granny's Dancing on the Table" a couple of weeks back, and I loved it. I am Swedish and I had somehow never heard of that one, so thank you for talking about it in other videos!
Thank you so much Marie
Emma, I've been subscribed to your channel for a while now, and really enjoy your content. I don't read the comments, because I watch CZcams on my TV, through the CZcams Roku channel. After you said you had a lot of negative comments for your top 10 horror films of the year video, I had to check out the comments. I didn't read all the comments (there are a lot!) but most of them were pretty positive. Maybe there are bunch of negative ones that I never got to, but from the bunch I read the most negative ones were disagreeing respectfully. Maybe you just remember the negative comments more. Anyway, as for this video, you had Barbie at #1. I just watched it on HBO MAX. It was good, but not my favorite of the year. But I have no problem with it being YOUR favorite of the year. It is your opinion after all. We like what we like. I do have a question though: why wasn't the other half of Barbenheimer on your list? Did Oppenheimer not make it to Australia, or did you not see it? If you did see it, did you not like or just not like as much as the others on your top 10?
If I wanted my own opinions mirrored back at me, I'd use a looking glass. I enjoy your videos most BECAUSE you have such different tastes from me. I don't intend to see any of the movies on this list, some of the descriptions/clips were actually triggering, but I loved the video and watched it to the end because I don't want to live in a bubble. Rock on, S.A.
I LOVE how much you love Barbie!!! I loved Barbie but I feel like a little less than I could have so seeing someone who absolutely loved it is perfect!
My top 10 though are
10. The Haunted Mansion (fun but also a good look at grief in a lease that is palatable even for kids)
9. Oppenheimer (does this need explanation?)
8. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (so well acted!!)
7. The Flash (what can I say this is just so up my alley)
6. Barbie!!!
5. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem (super fun and visually cool)
4. Gran Turismo (a bit cheesy but it’s a sports movie/unbelievable true story kinda deal plus I saw a pre-screening with a Q&A with the team behind the movie that really enhanced it all the more)
3. She Came to Me (probably the quirkiest movie I watched all year, another amazingly acted piece that is a wild ride and has more layers then you may expect)
2. Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret (a sweet adaptation that dives into the layered relationships between mothers and daughters)
1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (Rocket is my favorite character and the Guardians are just so special to me and then this one was even more emotional)
But! Tied at number 1 and almost unfair to all other movies that came out, so that’s why it’s an additional one
1. The Eras Tour! (Taylor Swift has been my favorite since I was 11 and I got her first CD and her live is amazing! Especially with all the debacle trying to get tickets to actually see her three times and failing this was such a treat.
I love your lists!! You have introduced me to so many films and encouraged me to branch out and try everything. I wouldn't be the true crime junkie I am it it wasn't for you!!
thats so nice to hear, thank you!
@@spookyastronauts of course!!
it’s so strange and frustrating that people want strangers to validate their opinion so bad that they react negatively when you don’t but I think the best part of watching so many different horror based youtubers is how different all of the opinions are - no youtuber I watch had the same top ten lists and it gave me so many 2023 movies to give a second chance / watch through to !! I’m sorry you have to deal with the negativity but I hope it doesn’t put you off being as open with your personal opinions - your ability to be so genuine and put yourself out there is what draws so many others to you 🙂🖤
Oooh A Good Person is now on my list to watch, even if I'll have to wait until I'm in a better head space. In fact, there's a few on this list I'll need to make time for!
Great list. I also had many of your choices on mine.
A few of these films i hadn't heard about and are definitely on my to watch list now
I sense a battle between Barbie and Beau, vying for the top spot, in the near future. I’ll have my popcorn ready…
I can’t imagine a continuum of any criteria where “Beau is Afraid” and “Barbie” don’t end up on opposite ends, and that’s what makes the fact that you chose these two films as your top films of the year so unique.
That’s kind of the point. Everyone has their own unique tastes that are formed by a lifelong journey of choices and circumstances. We bring those experiences into every film we watch, and therefore everyone is going to have a unique experience with film or any art form. And that’s perfectly normal.
As usual, your choices (of those I have seen) are fantastic. I appreciate that you are spotlighting films that were unique visions of their creators and may (with one notable exception) have flown under the radar. “Past Lives” is my favourite film of the year. I really enjoyed “Sanctuary” and “A Good Person” and "The Holdovers" as well.
As far as “Barbie” goes, the movie is a fun romp, it’s very entertaining, is it among my favourites of the year, no, but I will not begrudge those that hold it near and dear to their heart. Part of what makes Barbie so great is the spectacle that surrounds it. I had as much fun with the audience as I did with the movie. There is absolutely no denying the social, cultural, and economic influence Barbie had this year. I suspect that of all the films that were released in 2023, ten, fifteen years from now Barbie is the film that critics and scholars will be analyzing and reevaluating in academic circles for the impact it made on the culture.
Everyone has their own thoughts on media and entertainment, and no one is going to agree on everything, which is what makes art so invigorating. Whenever you state an opinion that I vehemently disagree with, I remember that you have
sung the praises of Gaspar Noe, so I am undoubtedly wrong.
Yep, even for those other ones a list is welcomed ! 🥳👌 Nelly Portman, love that 😂✌️
My list is very similar to yours yet again except my number 3 is Astroid City and then number 2 Oppenheimer and number 1 Barbie but all the rest were the same. I loved Sanctuary and you already know I added Saltburn to my horror list lol. I love your top tens cause they also give me so many things to check out that I may have missed.
I always love these kinds of videos so thank you for sharing! I’ve never heard about Sanctuary and added it to my to watch list. I saved Saltburn for my first film of 2024 and loved it!❤ Barbie is my favourite film of 2023 too! I had such a great time watching it at the cinema!
