    You can’t go wrong with either one. I have the Rustler VXL 4X4, 8S X-MAXX & just got a Sledge. These are all KILLER R/C trucks and kick azz right out of the box, yet they all have things that in my opinion that should eventually be upgraded as money allows. The Sledge has no front bumper, an ROM bumper is a cheap and wide mod. Both the X-MAXX & Sledge should have RPM rear hub carriers and hinge pins (M2C makes the pins too) that is a very affordable upgrade and is not difficult to do yourself. On the Rustler, i think the chassis brace kit is a smart upgrade if you plan on big air jumps. I always tell customers, go enjoy the vehicle, talk to other people and see what upgrades they made and what they like or dislike about them.

    I'm not at all into RC at the moment, but I'm thinking about revisiting my youth and getting a current model to see first-hand how much things have improved since I was a kid. This video is an excellent resource, as it defines so clearly the differences between these models. That's very useful info to a person who's about to drop a bunch of hundreds of dollars on something like this. Good job.

    One thing I want to say about the rustler is it doesn’t need any upgrades but if you’re willing to spend some more money you can build it for off road bashing/jumps with bigger wheels and shocks leave it like it is too ride everywhere or even make it a super fun and fast parking lot basher

    I bought my rustler 4x4 vxl about 5 weeks ago and have had a few minor problems. After a week I had to replace rear driveshafts and after week 4 the front ones. Just too much torque on the plastic universals. I have replaced them with steel drive shafts at $80 a pair(well worth it). At week 3 front bearing in the motor fell apart but ceramic replacements were only like $10. I am ordering the big bore shocks. This is my second RC and I am not a pro so the rustler has impressed me a lot, it really takes a beating. Also I don’t launch it so hitting jumps and learning to control in air is really easy. All in all very happy with my decision. Next purchase is 4x4 team club buggy!

It’s good to check on the box how fast you want to go? On your battery selection from FUN ZONE to TOP SPEED ZONE more speed more chances of breaking things on your RC and also depends on how skilled u are to maneuver it at top speed.

    I really thought the rustler would make it further because it might be lighter with smaller tires but the hoss winning was a pleasant surprise.
    You said that you burned out the servo on Rustler, well recently I saw a video on CZcams about there being a fuse inside the 2075 servo, maybe the fuse burned and you can just solder a wire there to fix it.

    From everything I have seen my observations are:
    Traxxas rustler 4x4 vxl,
    *good for begginers and experts
    *best for fun all round bashing
    Hoss,
    *it's ok for beginners
    *it's main strength are it's air stunting and jumping capabilities
    I personally have a traxxas rustler and I love it! It's so fun and it's a great all rounder. If you want to get good air stunts then the hoss is designed for stunts. But by what I have found is that the rustler can also be upgraded and modified to better suit your purpose and needs!
    I wish I could one day learn to control my rc car as good as you do with all those tricks in the air and the 2 wheeler!
    (My rustler can do awesome "ollies" or "bunny-hops" but I broke a driveshaft doing it :)

  • @BDSCRPN
    @BDSCRPN Před rokem

    Just got back into rc cars/trucks recently after a 30 year hiatus. Rustler 4x4 vxl can do everything the hoss can. It can actually do it all better in my opinion. One key I found is if using the traxxas link and app or multifunction dial set for tsm on transmitter. You can unleash the raw power from the rustler or dial it in (add more tsm control) for smoother control in whatever you're doing. I'm more on the heavy and uncontrolled side of the throttle, but tsm dialed in makes a difference. Yes, I know old video, but I just ran across it today. Not sure how your tsm control was set during testing but it does make a huge difference on these cars

I have since put on stronger arms. No issues since. I have owned two 6s Arrma Tyhoons including the new TLR as well as the Talion BLX, Slash VXL, BigRock Redcat Kaiju and Redcat Kaiju EXT and out of all them, the HOSS is my favorite for some reason. I'll still go for the Rustler. Overall it just looks better and lower for racing. Less roll over when cornering. And if you want to backflip easily with the Rustler 4x4 you all but need to change the tires. Traxxas released the sledgehammer before the Hoss release and put it on the the Rustler 4x4. But yes out of the Box you got more powerful system basically 4S system with a quick esc swap. But to me the Rustler 4x4 looks better. Try getting a HOSS TO 100MPH

    • @gasolinediesel972
      @gasolinediesel972 Před 3 lety +6

      So, you'd take the rustler over the hoss just because of the looks and having slightly better handling? I'm sorry, but, that's kinda stupid. The hoss has several advantages over the rustler like having a better body (more durable, doesn't pop off), better wheelie bar, better motor, esc fan, steel spur gear, center diff, better tires, ect. I honestly prefer the looks of the hoss. The only advantages to the rustler is the lcg chassis and lower price tag. Once you change the tires on the rustler it will be more expensive than a hoss. Might as well just buy the hoss. The rustler really has no reason to exist anymore along with the stampede 4x4.

    I would love to get a Hoss. I have the Rustler. I'm amazed at how you can beat the snot out of it and the parts hold up. First upgrade I did was aluminum shocks because the plastic ones popped their tops so easily (after tumbling, not even going over a jump). I also have the MIP driveshafts front and back because I got tired of breaking the plastic ones. Also have RPM lower control arms.

      This question is open to anyone. I also own the Rustler 4x4 VXL. We chose the Rustler over the HOSS primary because we intend to race them on a track not bash them. But I have an issue, I’ve installed the Sledgehammer Tires on my Rustler and have broken a front axle. I was told even though Traxxas recommended these tires they could be too large. But if you look at the specs of both these RC cars they are almost identical.

    • @jfolck1886

    I bought my 6 year old boy the brushed stampede 4x4, he drives it great. We have rocks and hills and some flat land. I may go with the hoss to due so both of us will have monster trucks. We may go to a track in the future. Any upgrades needed on either? Thank you this was the best video I have seen. I subscribed!

      @outsourcedrc  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks! I don’t think the Hoss needs any upgrades. The shocks would probably be the only thing if I were to upgrade anything. It’s a pretty solid truck as long as you are not doing hundreds of ollies like I do. The Stampede is not going to be able to tear itself apart with a brushed motor so I may need nothing at all. Maybe drive shafts if I had to guess.

    A lot of your air tricks are because the hoss has a higher CG, not necessarily because of torque. With a high CG, the wheels have more leverage over the center of mass.

    • @romper4444
      @romper4444 Před rokem +1

      High cg has got nothing to do with it, it's purely because of larger tires creating more gyro effect or centrifugal force to rotate the vehicle, and secondary being the more torque the motor has to spin the tires quicker creates more rotation.

    How about the center differential vs the slipper clutch? The Hoss comes with the $60 center differential installed already. Just for that, I would go with the Hoss since I prefer center diffs since they have been less problematic for me and can be tuned with different weight oils. The wheels on the Hoss are better too.

      I run a Stampede, VXL 3500Kv, 3s lipo, (6400mAh) with a 9-tooth pinion and 54-tooth spur (center differential). Very similar to these in build and power train, and I get anything from about an hour to three hours, depending on how many hills I climb, and how fast I push it. I run typically on packed dirt/ hiking trail, or steep and rocky hill climbs. When I am running on gravel or asphalt, I get the higher end of that time, even if I am pushing it. Have not clocked the top speed yet. Hope this helps give you an idea.

    I love my rustler, I don’t have a hoss but I have the sledge hammer tires for my rustler, I love both tires, I like the stock tires more because it stays planted better, I run a motor fan and the 20 t pinion on it, so it is pretty responsive in the air, but that being said, the sledgehammer tires make it do like 20 backflips in like a 10 foot jump, that is my speech.

I broke the upgraded axles of the rustler on my rustler 4x4 vxl was only good at running on pavement short grass it can run yes but after a week or so the axles would stretch so bad on the u joins and eventually snap out.yes i ran daily at that time. Now the hoss has bigger tires. The axles will receive a lot more stress. More mass to spin. Wheelies are really the torture test for axles all of the massive stress go to the rear wheels supporting the weight of the truck. Sure the hoss has a balance because its center of gravity is higher than the rustler so its axles wont suffer too much more.
