    BRORA 38 REVIEW: • Brora 38 (2016 Release)
    Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
    80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
    85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
    88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

The earthy notes as you described the Port Ellen, sound like a scotch I would really enjoy. Well done brother, as always.

You are absolutely correct in recognising the same Peat flavours in Ardbeg and Port Ellen.
There are two main peat bogs which are used on Islay for drying barley, each of which are quite different. The Castlehill bog
which Port Ellen maltings uses is quite different to the Octomore Farm bog around Octomore and Rockside farms, used for Kilchoman and Bruichladdich Port Charlotte and of course, Octomore. Port Ellen Distillery obviously drew its peat from Castlehill as does Ardbeg. Interestingly, the Castlehill peat signature was probably most prominent in the Caol Ila Cask Strength bottlings of the early 2000s, sadly now discontinued. If you see a bottle, grab it. You won't regret it. The finest Islay I've ever tasted. (Of course, I must admit having never tasted Port Ellen).

Back in the day I used to drink 10 year old ex-bourbon Port Ellen bottled by Connoisseurs Choice - £25 a bottle. I guess it tasted more like 'Port Ellen' than this little gem. This is a delicious antique but is so far removed from what the distillery was producing (when it was producing) that suggesting a Port Ellen character is misleading. Trouble is because of the name the price is crazy.

Great review buddy. “Retirement home peat” best line ever 😆

Got to try a sample of this release too, bottle share. Given to me blind I would never peg as an Islay, everything is so delicate here, great experience.

Have to make an exception for Port Ellen. Fantastic old whisky just like Brora. Most PE reminds me of cask strength old Talisker with a dash of old Caol Ila.

I wonder whether Georgie Crawford’s departure from Diageo to Elixir will delay the reopening plans for Port Ellen 🤔

Well, from this I get 2 x Brora 35 at $2,200.00 Cad each > I PE 35 year at $4,400.00 Cad LCBO. You may be moving into Mike and Narbie territory with PE samples and waving 1970's Ardbeg bottles around :)

Regardless whether it’s Brora or Port Ellen, the new releases will only be as good as the barrels the New Make/whisky goes into now, but knowing Diagio & their brand strategy, they’ll ride on the coattails of the brand, charge a premium & use subclass barrels.

I hope you're wrong about that. Hopefully they have the right people in place to assure they make quality scotch. You might be right about high prices, but a $35 million pound investment to make average whisky? That would be a shame.

I think you’re saving that sample for after the review. Understandably.

Don’t understand the value logic. The cost per ounce is the same regardless of whether you bought the whole bottle.

    • @SippersSocialClub
      @SippersSocialClub  Před 3 lety

Sometimes it's worth it to try a pour vs buying a bottle. This was the case here in my opinion. Worth trying Port Ellen (if you haven't before), but not worth buying a bottle.

To me it makes sense. You might be willing to pay $500 to see a concert of your favorite singer. But you probably won’t buy 10 tickets of the same concert for $5000 just for yourself.
