  • Every year Diageo, the owners of Port Ellen, announce a number of special releases. From 2001 to 2017 these special releases included one bottle of Port Ellen per year. In total there are 17 bottles, and the collection has now become extremely collectible due to Diageo’s announcement that the annual releases are no more.
The collection includes a wide range of age statements from 22 to 37 years old. These bottles are some of the most collectible in the world.

It will be interesting to see how Diageo handles the reopening. Will we see 8 year old Port Ellen, or will they wait and only release older age statements?

It's going to be really interesting. The same with Brora too. I'm interested to see if they'll release lots of fancy packaged NAS bottles in 3 years...

Great video - thanks for sharing. Some have called the Feis Ile 2008 (1981) bottling the 7.5 release which would bring a complete set to 18 bottles.

Hi Vin - glad you liked the video!
Watch this space for a video about the Port Ellen which Whisky Auctioneer just sold for £72,000 (which sold in 2011 for only £3,200!).

Great Video. Have you ever thought about covering Bourbon occasionally?

Hey - glad you like the video. As much as aI love drinking bourbon it's not something I know too much about - perhaps I better change that!!

Hi, I have a few bottles of Port Ellen. Ive seen their prices rising over the yeas. However, what will happen to those older bottles once the new bottles come online? I personally can't see how they will be in anyway better than the old stuff for many decades. If they are substantially worse, will that devalue the older bottling because of a potential upcoming tarnished reputation?

Great video and very informative. With mothballed and silent distilleries coming back into production, how would that usually affect prices of bottles on the secondary market? Logically speaking, surely it would make sense for their values to drop as the taste and flavour profiles to these whiskies thought to be in scarce supply will be mass produced once again? I've been hesitant in investing in these kinds of bottles whenever I hear a distillery is due to reopen. For example the Rosebank 30 year old was recently released for £1600 after it was announced the distillery is due to reopen. Not really sure whether it's a good investment or not to be honest and I've just been waiting to see how the price changes before I invest in a bottle.
A bit different as well, but I was wondering about the likes of bottles like Hibiki 12 which were discontinued due to a shortage of supply? Once aged whisky stocks at Suntory are replenished, how do you think this will affect bottles of Hibiki 12 for collectors and investors who are holding on to them now? I'd really appreciate your expert advice on these matters as it's something I've been wondering for a while but nobody really seems to cover it.

Hey - just saw your comments sorry! OH yes - I think Brora, Rosebank and Port Ellen are all going to see a big uptake in value very soon!
I would arguably go for the older bottles - but that's just me being romantic and thinking they are under valued. The market likes these modern releases at the moment so who can say!

That's a tough one to say as there are so many bottles. We have a VERY well priced 5th edition available here for £1,875 shop.marklittler.com/product/port-ellen-5th-annual-release/

Port Ellen, Macallan, Brora. A great vehicle for criminals to wash their dirty money. No one ever talks about this being the chief reason these bottle soar in value. An inconvenient truth.... sadly.
