  • Port Ellen 1978 - 23 Year Douglas Laing Bottling - Rare, Old, Islay Single Malt Whisky Review
Our whisky friend Alan very kindly brought us a sample of his Douglas Laing bottling of a 1978 Port Ellen!!! Wow! Thanks Alan!
Port Ellen distillery in Islay closed down in 1983 so everything from there is super rare, really old now and therefore really expensive so we really appreciate the share! This expression was bottled as a 23 year old at 50% ABV.
Have you tried anything from Port Ellen? What did you think? Were you impressed and did it meet your expectations? Let us know in the comments!

Old fork is my favorite ever tasting note. 👍

Another youtube reviewer of PE did say that the quality of output from the distillery was patchy, especially so in its later years.

They couldn't give Port Ellen away in the 80's.

Always fun to enjoy whisky older than your age… Port Ellen is normally excellent.

Love the honesty. People relatively new to whisky often get caught up with the Port Ellen enigma and think all of it is stellar whisky. It is not. Just ask why was it closed and the remaining stock often put in tired refill casks. I would often turn down bottlings (the Provenance spring to mind) when they use to sell at less than £100 each and would only buy the OB annual releases when they were a couple of hundred a bottle. That being said the PE1 bottling in the Elements of Islay range is in my top 5 all time (and I have tried 5000+ whiskies) and the old Cadenhead bottlings are stunning.

Great review. Some of those '70s/'80s DL/HL Port Ellens are fantastic, others are just okay.

Hiho, what an entertaining an honest review. I just laughed when Jen compared the Port Ellen to an old fork. I remember having a bottle of Port Ellen in early 2000 bottled by DL. It was really good an I enjoyed it. Keep on doing entertaining whisky reviews. Cheers from fan in Germany

I actually never connected the distilled-day on a bottle of Whisky with when I was born - interesting! :-) Great review - interesting tasting notes! :-)

I just had to pour myself a wee dram of Port Ellen from 1982 for this rewiev.
Are you sure this was Old & Rare bottling 'cause those are bottled at cask strenght?
Old Malt Cask range from Douglas Laing is bottled at 50%.
I'm also a geek and this info is important. I would love to taste that one, 'cause i've yet to taste a dud from Port Ellen😀

I think you might be right actually! We were just going on the wee sample bottle we had been given but I think you are correct! Well noticed! We have been told by a few folk that there is a 1982 bottling that is particularly good!

Nice review folks. For sure this is one of the most average older Port Ellen you’ll ever taste, many better ones out there.

Never tried Port Ellen and would love to one day. Maybe when the prices get a bit more sensible or I get rich. Neither likely to happen 😉. Appreciate your honesty, I have sampled expensive whiskies from time to time and can honestly say there’s not a snowballs chance in hell I’d pay the asking price. Once you go over £100 a bottle the value goes off a cliff I find.

For sure - we always say price doesn't mean quality it usually just means rarity/costs to make!
