I love the Rock Oyster...want another bottle.
The T. Beastie is one I need to spend some time with.
Big Peat, like Peat Monster, is a nice peat for a beginner like me.
I now realize I should of bought the Scallywag because I love Speyside and sherry.
I will grab it next time.
    Cheers

Had all four of these - and they are all excellent. Douglas Laing have also released limited cask-strength versions of all of them - with the cask-strength Big Peat released every Christmas at different strengths. This year's Christmas Big Peat has whiskies from all working Islay distilleries and a splash of Port Ellen. All DL's vatted malts (no grain whiskies used) are non-chill filtered and natural colour. There's also one called The Epicurean which is a blend of lowland malts. There's a Timorous Beastie 21 sherry edition and a 40 year old! Cheers, boys.

Hi guys. Just joined you from Scotland. I love Douglas Laing whiskies. It's worth mentioning tho, all his blends, single cask whiskies, are un chill filtered and natural colour . That to me , and to many whisky lovers like yourselves, is important to mention, as whisky is at its best when it's natural and untouched with caramel colouring and un chill filtered. That should always be encouraged . Enjoy your blogs very much guys. Slanje va ( good health) .

You mentioned "The Timorous Beastie" contained Glen Garioch, that is pronounced Glen Gee-Ree 😀, it is a local area to me and well known for being mis pronounced. Great show as usual 👍

I just went shopping... It's interesting that I got some Peat Monster, and some Big Peat on this latest excursion. I enjoyed the Peat Monster a lot. It brought me close to my benchmark, Laphroaig Triple Wood, but with more vanilla, slightly less fruit, and almost as much smoke... I will try the Big Peat next week probably right after your video hits CZcams... You're right, Bart. There is nothing wrong at all with a very good blend...

Thanks Foodquig. I don't think you'll be disappointed by the Big Peat.

Glad to see you guys trying whiskies that are off the beaten tracks. And I totally agree with your comments regarding blended whiskies. Some of my favorites are blends.

How do chaps, great vlog and some tastie whisky as always! really enjoyed the scallywag (no good boy-o) and timorous (shy) beastie. you probably know already they are a blend of single malts (vatted malt). not just a standard blend. keep up the outstanding work!!

Great point about blends - it is an art form & sadly under-appreciated by many old school & new drinkers.

And way much better than the usual timorous beastie (i gave it a 82/100, because way too much spicy)

My wife was falling in love with the packaging for the Scallywag... I didn't know if it was worth it, and as if it was meant to be, the STDs just put them on the table. 👍🏻 ( I am very curious about Big Peat.. can't wait). Thank you again.

I'm with you on the newer specialty blends, some are superior to many single malts (in fact, single malts are not nearly as good as years gone by). Also, on your Macallan Sp. Ed. 2 review, 93 points? Please, it's flavor profile closely resembles the box explanation; however, it's youth and overly dry finish killed it for me (as well as, the price).

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  Před 7 lety

I still love it (the macallan edition 2) and have returned to it several times! Don't regret my score on it at all. Good notes on the single malts. I think due to the supply/demand issue and a lot of NAS stuff out there, blends have been excelling!

You guys better be legends in the local. I'm a legend at least at three. The store workers ask me what to drink, lol. I'm crossing my fingers at least two of these showup.

When I go into a PA state store, they don't know the difference between bourbon and scotch. You would really be scotch gods here. In NJ, just yesterday I had to sheepishly explain that they gave me the Port Charlotte Scotch Barley when I had ordered the Islay Barley. At least they pretended to get it. (big smile)

Ouch. That does depend on the liquor store for sure. There's even some around here when we go shopping its scary about the help.

Just watched to make sure Ken. He keeps them straight. Watch at the first and the Scallywag goes in our own Glencairn. He does shuffle them around but he keeps them straight. Thanks for watching, Scott.

I'll be that guy; the stress is on the 1st syllable in "timorous." TIM-ur-us. I'm really keen to try these; I just got a sample of Rock Oyster in my Drinks by the Dram Advent calendar and loved it. Nice to hear some love for blends, too - I'll take a good blend over a mediocre single malt most of the time! I've messed around with my collection and tried doing some blending, and it is DEFINITELY an art...and I'm pretty much in the fingerpainting stage of that art.

Yeah I love the pronunciations in these videos lol That's not meant as a snarky comment. Part of the fun of life is mispronouncing foreign words and foreign place names.

Ps i'm a big Big Peat fan - I really need to try the others. You should look out for 2016 Xmas edition big peat - call up that rep! It's supposed to be off the hook.

When scott is editing we use a dslr with 1080p video. When Bart is doing the editing he has a camcorder. This one is on the dslr. And Bart just ordered a Big Peat Xmas edition from Caskers for $69!
