  • In this video I remove my old folding RV entry steps and replace them with the Lippert Solid Step Storage Box. I also explain why I decided to modify the installation process, avoiding the need to drill into my frame and making things a little bit easier.

    Looking to replace your old RV steps with some extra storage space?
    If you're upgrading from the old fold-under-the-rig-style RV step to the new style and aren't going to be using your old steps anymore, you are able to remove them from your rig and fill that empty space with some pretty cool storage solutions offered by both Lippert and MORryde.

    • Lippert Solid Step vs ...
    The box itself weighs in at around 25 pounds and Lippert says it's rated to hold up to 100 lbs of cargo. It's made of steel and is painted with a durable black powder-coat. It also includes a sealed locking handle with two keys. I found the mounting bracket, hardware and keys packed loose inside the box.
    Removing our old steps was a very simple process.
    For the box install, I was expecting an easy plug and play swap where I just mount the box to the existing step brackets. But Lippert's instructions want you to attach a mounting bracket to your frame's i-beam by drilling 8 holes through it and then hanging the box from that.
    I didn’t like the idea of drilling into my frame so I decided to switch things up a bit. Since my old steps weighed 50+ pounds and they're also rated to support 300lbs, I thought it was reasonable to assume the old brackets could support a 25lb box with 100lbs of weight capacity.
    With this in mind I decided the simplest thing to do would be to drill 2 holes on each side of the box and hang it from the old brackets just like the steps were. As I test fitted everything, I also decided it would be best to attach Lippert's mounting bracket to the back of the box so it could rest against the frame and provide some additional support.
    One thing I noticed is that there would be a significant gap between the side of the box and the existing step brackets. To remedy this, I picked up four 3/8ths inch spacers and to compensate for the extra width, four new stainless steel carriage bolts that were 3/8" longer than my old ones. I also used twelve 3/8" stainless steel fender washers which I thought would not only provide a little extra spacing but also a more even load distribution.
    After checking, double checking and triple checking my measurements, I used a 3/8" bit to drill 4 holes in the box.
    Once all 4 holes were drilled it was time to bolt everything in. The order of hardware was bolt through the step bracket, then washer, then spacer, then another washer, then through the box, then another washer and finally the nut. I torqued down everything pretty tightly and then I was done.
    So how stable was the box after this modified installation?
    Well, I was able to do pushups on it, stand on it, use it as a step to get in and out of the rig. I pulled and pushed and tried my best to get it to move but it didn’t budge. So I’m hoping it’ll hold 100lbs. I obviously can’t guarantee this but I feel pretty confident.
    The new box is awesome! It looks so much better than the old steps and I'm excited to see how it holds up.
    We're going to be keeping all of our ratcheting straps, bungees and other tools we use for loading up and strapping down our car in the garage on travel days.
    I'm also super stoked that it can still be used as a step for getting in and out of the garage on the rare occasion we need to.

    Great video, Chris! It's really interesting to see how you managed to re-use the step mounting hardware.

      Thanks Craig! Yeah, it’s like I said, I anticipated using the old brackets before even looking at the instructions. And then when I finally realized the install was going to require drilling, I figured I’d rather drill 4 holes in the box than 8 holes in my frame! Haha.

    I'm considering the steps for my camper. May have to also consider this box too to hold tools instead of putting them in the below storage. Another great video. And I far prefer your install over drilling into the frame.

    They are nicer than the morryde but the morryde are half the cost, bolt into the existing brackets and sit flush with the bottom of the skirting.

    Figured you would mount the Moride Steps on the garage entry door.

    • @AroundTheSunWeGo
      @AroundTheSunWeGo  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Grady. I actually did consider doing that but since we rarely use our back door for going in and out, and also because our car takes up a good bit of space in the garage on travel days (so I wanted to leave the space as open as possible) I decided it’d be best to just shed the extra weight. But they are in storage so who knows if/when we may add them later on 👍

  • @Eddiesin
    @Eddiesin Před 3 lety

    With some slight modifications to your factory morryde steps you can install them in the garage instead of tossing them, that’s what I ended up doing 👍🏼

    • @AroundTheSunWeGo
      @AroundTheSunWeGo  Před 3 lety +1

      Absolutely! Yeah, I actually considered moving our old MORryde steps back there, but since we rarely use our rear door and our Fiat takes up most of the garage on travel day, I decided it would be best for us to just drop a little weight and keep the space as free as possible. We did put them in storage though because they’re definitely good steps! Never know when we’ll need to whip em’ out again!

    • @AroundTheSunWeGo
      @AroundTheSunWeGo  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey there Joe. No, door clearance has never been an issue. When first lining up the steps before installing any screws, you can position the steps exactly how they need to be so there is no interference. Thanks for checking out the videos!

    • @AroundTheSunWeGo
      @AroundTheSunWeGo  Před rokem

      Hey Dan. I assume you’re wanting to light up the interior of the box? If so, I’d simply attach a magnetic battery powered motion detecting light to the inside top of the box. Looks like they have a 4-pack on Amazon for $10.

      @danbakke4495 Před rokem

      @@AroundTheSunWeGo Actually, it's a step light, so was wondering if it can continue to be used as a step light? We are looking at the Lippert 4 step for our 2005 Wildcat 5th wheel and at the same time get the toolbox.

      @@danbakke4495 I see. Without knowing which light you currently have I’m not sure if it can continue to be used. I do know that MORryde makes an awesome motion activated step light that works on either their step or the Lippert step. $40 for a 2-pack on Amazon.

    The only thing I might add is corrosion protection to the raw metal exposed when drilling. Rustolium or undercoating let it dry than mount. ! Retired collision expert never overlook raw metal. Will Rust ,

    You still put the mounting bracket on the back? Then what was the point of all the other stuff. What a joke.

    • @AroundTheSunWeGo
      @AroundTheSunWeGo  Před 3 lety +1

      Lol. The entire point was to avoid drilling 8 holes in the frame. I only attached the mounting bracket to the back of the box using the four included 1/4” flange bolts, which is easy and takes like 5 minutes. But I didn’t attach the bracket to the frame rail, which is what would require drilling 8 holes in the frame. The bracket is essentially working as a spacer between the box and the frame. Let me know if you’re still confused ;)

    • @bseery
      @bseery Před 3 lety

      That would help stabilize it and provide support on the back. It would keep it from moving downward when he is twerking on the front of the box.
