Looking to upgrade or repair your flaking and peeling RV couch? This video is for you.
If you have leather style furniture in your RV, chances are you may have experienced the dreaded cracking, peeling or flaking issue that has unfortunately become a common occurrence for many RV owners.
So what’s going on here? Why does the material peel? There are two common reasons why these materials begin to fail.
The first is simply a result of friction and pressure over time due to heavy and prolonged usage. This is typically referred to as wear and tear and generally occurs in localized sections of the material that see the most friction, such as the seat cushions or leg rests.
But if you’re fairly gentle on your furniture, and yet you’re still seeing peeling and flaking, you may be experiencing the other cause of failure, which is a phenomenon known as Hydrolysis.
Instead of a mechanical breakdown of the material due to pressure and friction, this is a chemical breakdown caused by long term exposure to humidity and heat.
So, what can you do to fix your peeling issues?
For localized failures due to wear and tear, you may want to simply cover the problem areas with a leather repair patch.
But if your material has started to fail due to Hydrolysis, it’s pretty much a runaway train at that point and you may want to consider replacing your furniture.
Two of the most popular options on the market for luxury RV furniture are the Thomas Payne line by Lippert and the Charles line by RecPro.
The 1st difference between these two brands is going to be their specific dimensions. The 2nd difference is their available convenience features. The 3rd difference is their overall comfort. 4th is the way they are packaged and shipped. The 5th difference is their ease of installation. 6th is the length of their warranties. 7th is the difference in price.
After watching the video, would you rather have a Thomas Payne sofa from Lippert of a Charles sofa from RecPro?
What features are most important to you?
Also, feel free to drop any questions you might have in the comments as well and I’ll do my best to get back to you as soon as I can.

This is a great video - thank you!! We have already replaced our theater seating chairs due to the peeling. The originals were less than 3 years old. The sofa is now molting and we'll be replacing it soon. The theater seats we bought are the Thomas Payne fabric rather than the faux leather. Now considering taking advantage of the discount for replacing the sofa - this is the first I've heard of their offering discounts due to the peeling. We had received a discount last year because we were at Lippert attending their RV Owner's School and they had a discount as being an attendee. Definitely will look at the RecPro!!

In fact, we're on the second love seat because the first Thomas Payne love seat failed due to hydrolysis. And now we have the same thing going on. Good video, We just replaced the peeling Thomas Payne with the exact same Lippert seating you used in your comparison, We really wanted real leather but could not find it anywhere. We were just at the Tampa supershow and spent time looking at all the companies represented. We ultimately chose the Lippert due to the powered options. That being said we did get it at the show for substantially less than ordering from a dealer around $2000 out the door. Were just keeping our fingers crossed it doesn't start peeling.

I replaced my rv sofa with RecPro recliners and just like you showed in the video, they suddenly started shedding fabric at about 3 years. We had covers made for the backs of the chairs and tried the stick on fabric on the seats. Not an impressive look but it's functional. The parachute chord for one recliner also broke. My experience with these chairs makes RecPro a no go for us in the future. We are going with a company that uses Ultraleather next. They are pricey but high end and will last.

I still have both sets but am currently using the Lippert one because 1. It’s the last one I set up to test and 2. The taller backrest is a good fit for my 6’3” frame. Haha. It is hard to choose though, because the RecPro set is definitely more “comfy” and “soft”. If I was a bit shorter, I think the RecPro would come out on top. My wife definitely prefers the RecPro hands down.

Have been looking. Prefer Manual, as we go places with no hookups. Also, a "Biggy" , a matching "sleeper" sofa with a bed, no J fold out stuff. If you have a couple to go with you, want them to be comfortable. Seriously, if the RV gets used 5 weeks a year, that is a ton less use than furniture in a house. 10years in the RV = 1Y in the home.

These poor quality materials are susceptible to premature wear and tear and hydrolysis from humidity and heat. The newer materials are of higher quality, therefore delaying the onset of these common issues.

Everyone jumping ship on Lippert 😂. What you may not know is Lippert at lest offered a discount to unsatisfied customers. RecPro told all their customers to just suck it up. After 1200 dollars just 2 years ago my recliners look like they are disgusting 20 year olds. Almost all of the fake lather has pealed off. The floor is covered in peace’s. Now I am having to look again. I have no desire to give RecPro another dime of my money yet, my options are limited.

Interesting! I haven’t heard a lot of horror stories about RecPro. Do you know which version you have? And did you contact RecPro about the problem? What did they say?

Thomas Payne in the Ass. So much wasted energy making the kids use the couch carefully just to have it torn to shreds anyway within a year is ridiculous. I dont want a couch with lights, vibrators and heat. I just want something that can be sat on comfortably. Why does that cost a thousand dollars?! I unplugged all that crap right away. Still have a cup holder that cant hold a coffee mug nor do i have end tables. Weird designs when it comes to sofas.
