My name is Chris Dow and my wife and I live, work and travel full time in our RV - a 2020 Grand Design Momentum 397TH fifth wheel toy hauler.
Before becoming full time RVers, I had no idea how many people were interested in doing the same! I’d never thought of living in an RV until the day we actually went to a dealership to look at rigs. But every time I told someone what we were planning on doing, “I’ve considered that…” or “I’d like to do that one day…” was the common response.
With that in mind (and also the realization that pulling this off was going to take a huge amount of research and planning) I decided to document the entire journey.
My plan for this channel is to release my experiences chronologically for anyone thinking of doing something similar. From how-tos and tutorials to reviews, tips and my thoughts on RV life.
I hope to create videos that are informative, helpful and maybe even a little inspiring :)
Here's to making every trip count!

I removed dining area and added a dual reclining sofa with storage and cup holders, with Ashley brand in microfiber. Fit perfect and microfiber will not peel, plus was about $450.
@@rotwiler7674 very nice!
This is a great video - thank you!! We have already replaced our theater seating chairs due to the peeling. The originals were less than 3 years old. The sofa is now molting and we'll be replacing it soon. The theater seats we bought are the Thomas Payne fabric rather than the faux leather. Now considering taking advantage of the discount for replacing the sofa - this is the first I've heard of their offering discounts due to the peeling. We had received a discount last year because we were at Lippert attending their RV Owner's School and they had a discount as being an attendee. Definitely will look at the RecPro!!
@@rhondameyers1632 you’re very welcome! Sorry to hear about all of your issues but hopefully the new fabrics will hold up!
Thank you I was about to buy a norcold or even furrion to replace / update the stock bs that came w my class a right. Not now might as well go residential and not have those problems like you said. I love the dc option but if it comes with headaches down the road I will pass and save a couple thousand. Thanks
@breannaolssen5076 You’re very welcome! But just to be clear, our 2118 was an AC / Propane combination. I don’t have personal experience with a DC version.
@@AroundTheSunWeGo the one I was looking at is a 2118 which I think does all 3 but I would have only hooked up the dc
There could be a version of the 2118 I’m unaware of, but I believe the DC option also requires propane. So if it says the 12v/DC amp draw is 2.75, that’s how much power it uses while running on propane.
Great detail video. You sure are a great mechanic. Got a question, you did a video about a year ago on installing a residential refrigerator. How is that working out? Our Norcold 2118 just not doing it anymore. Thinking of putting solar on top of the roof and the Samsung RF18 in place of the Norcold. Any advice you can give me?
@@stevengoossen6019 Hey Steven! The Samsung has been going strong for over 2 years now. No complaints at all. I’d say all of the details I cover in that video still apply. It’s a great swap to do!

Okay so where did you connect the two positive and negative wires that you cut from behind the fridge slide out…? I did the same and it keeps blowing the fridge fuse. I wasn’t sure where to reconnect them lol.
@@mementomori2353 I connected them to one another. I connected the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative. One of the positive wires is coming from the battery and one is going to the stove. One of the negative wires is coming from the battery and one is going to the stove. So you’re simply splicing them together so the power can flow from the battery to the stove.
Great video, great details
Appreciate that Danny! Happy to finally get this video out!
Thomas Payne in the Ass. So much wasted energy making the kids use the couch carefully just to have it torn to shreds anyway within a year is ridiculous. I dont want a couch with lights, vibrators and heat. I just want something that can be sat on comfortably. Why does that cost a thousand dollars?! I unplugged all that crap right away. Still have a cup holder that cant hold a coffee mug nor do i have end tables. Weird designs when it comes to sofas.

Great video gonna be coming in handy. Got to change ours out what was the thickness on the insulation board you used?
Glad you enjoyed it! 1/2-in x 4-ft x 8-ft and there’s actually a link to it in the description below the video.
I have this same fridge freezer is at 20 degree and fridge is at 60 degrees I live in desert so currently 109 outside. I see no yellow powder i replaced the thermistor and still nothing and the fans in back are working and I have the Titan fan as well.
Sorry to hear that! I’m definitely no expert, so I don’t have a ton of insight to give here. Did it ever work properly in 109 degree temps? If it did, at least you know something has changed and it may be fixable.
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Did to hook yo the ice maker or the water on this fridge? They are only $900 right now so I may jump on one.
I did not but I know other people have run a line to the slide, so it’s definitely doable. I don’t trust the water at different parks enough to consume though lol
I have a 2021 Norcold 1210 the freezer is more or less a cooler at this point. There is no change from LP or electric, no amonia leak. Everything ohms out correctly. No idea what is wrong, either I start spending 100's of dollars and replace boards and hope that works. Or just buy residential, since I work on the road and park for 12-18 months at a time. Great video and exactly what I needed to see for the removal. It is making my mind sit easier, if i choose to go residential.
Glad you found the video helpful! Only other thing I didn’t see you mention is airflow. Do you know if your setup is pulling in plenty of air at the bottom and forcing it up past the fins and out through the top?
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Yessir fans are flowing just fine. The freezer is around 45 degrees and the fridge is 68 degrees. Can't figure it out, but a 1l residential fridge, some foam board and gorilla tape is a great deal and easy to do .
@@Stiffy910 Roger that! Yeah, it might be something minor, but if you just can’t pin it down, the swap is easy enough. Good luck!
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Ya man im torn between swapping out all electrical components and a hope and a wish. Or just swopping residential and be care free with this foreign pain in the A$$ fridge. Thanks man
You got it!
My RV fridge quit. I will be replacing it with a household model from Amazon.
Sorry to hear that! But good luck with the new install!
Your videos are simply outstanding! Technically excellent, great info, no silly "comedy" or annoying music etc. Very helpful!
I really appreciate that! I try my best to keep things concise. I’m glad you find them helpful 🙏
So here we are halfway through 2024 and still no upgraded model of the Lippert steps?? I can live without the quick release lever for the adjustable legs (although it seems like a good idea). But I do need to have the quick release hinges since I don't always have 4 ft. of space available to swing the 4 step version up and down again. My RV storage lot packs us in pretty close together... I will need to be able to remove these easily just to be able to get into the RV. I will just use a portable step when I need to do that I guess. Definitely one downside to this type of step. Gonna call Lippert Monday to see what's going on with the upgrades that you showed on your video...
Heck yeah! Give them a call Monday and let us know what they say!
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Will do! I def want this upgrade before my next RV outing if possible, but really want to make sure I have the latest version if available...Stay tuned!
@flash8051 I still don't see them on their website. I emailed them back in March asking what the status was. The rep that emailed me back said all they are being told is sometime this year. She also mentioned too check back mid year. I just sent a follow-up email so we'll see what transpires. I would love to get my hands on a set and have been holding out since this video, lol. I may have no choice but to go with morryde. Can't hold out forever and I definitely don't want the pinned version
I haven’t heard any updates from Lippert on these in a long while.
Enjoyed your video. Very helpful. I'm researching 12v or residential fridges. How do I handle traveling and maybe a quick pic overnight boondock with the residential fridge? I also have a Samsung at our house, which always needs a reset.
We have an inverter along with a 300 amp hour lithium battery bank which powers the fridge any time we’re disconnected from power. I installed this system when we first purchased our RV so it was already in place when I made the fridge swap. If I didn’t already have an inverter and wasn’t interested in installing one, the 12v fridge would be an awesome alternative.
I replaced my rv sofa with RecPro recliners and just like you showed in the video, they suddenly started shedding fabric at about 3 years. We had covers made for the backs of the chairs and tried the stick on fabric on the seats. Not an impressive look but it's functional. The parachute chord for one recliner also broke. My experience with these chairs makes RecPro a no go for us in the future. We are going with a company that uses Ultraleather next. They are pricey but high end and will last.
Sorry to hear that Thomas! Do you know if these were the Suprima Leather or the Ultrafabrics Brisa? And what year did you purchase?
I am glad I found your comparison video. I was just doing some research on changing my dinette to a reclining loveseat arrangement. I had no idea that there were such problems with the quality of materials used. The prices are high in my opinion so I will definitely be looking at other options. Lay-Z-Boy where you get quality for the price.
Glad you found the video helpful! Yeah, hoping the updated materials hold up better than the original. Only time will tell!
Great video!!!!
Appreciate that! Hope it was helpful!
I've not heard anything but bad reviews on Samsung appliances and the same with LG. I would look at other brands myself. But then again I wouldn't do a residential fridge in my camper. I like the absorption set up and if I changed my mind, I would go 12v.
I totally understand the concern with bad reviews. But I dug pretty deep and realized for every bad review, there were 99 good ones. And those who have a bad experience are usually the loudest. With that considered, a less than 1% chance of dissatisfaction sounded good enough to me. But after 2+ years and thousands of miles we’ve had no problems. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
@@AroundTheSunWeGo I have a Kenmore fridge I bought new in 1994. So far it's working flawlessly. Moved it from our kitchen to my garage. We put a Frigidaire in the kitchen and have had nothing but trouble out of the ice maker. Hope yours lasts a long time.
@@f150bft sorry to hear that! And yes, me too!
Awesome video, just ordered my shower door
Nice! Hope the video was helpful :)
Everyone jumping ship on Lippert 😂. What you may not know is Lippert at lest offered a discount to unsatisfied customers. RecPro told all their customers to just suck it up. After 1200 dollars just 2 years ago my recliners look like they are disgusting 20 year olds. Almost all of the fake lather has pealed off. The floor is covered in peace’s. Now I am having to look again. I have no desire to give RecPro another dime of my money yet, my options are limited.
Interesting! I haven’t heard a lot of horror stories about RecPro. Do you know which version you have? And did you contact RecPro about the problem? What did they say?
THANK YOU!! Couldn’t figure out why my furniture is ruined, I thought rats attacked it.. This is horrible that Thomas Payne doesn’t do right by their product.
You’re very welcome! And yes, a lot of people feel that way. Fortunately they’re offering the extended discount option and hopefully their new material holds up better. But RecPro is a great option for those who are ready to move away from Thomas Payne.
I sure appreciate your descriptive & thorough post, but I won’t give Thomas Payne another damn nickel.. Rat Bastards sold junk & they know it.. They should do right & recall their greed. I will contact them, but they won’t do zip.. Grand Design in general should be ashamed, so many issues I’ve had at my expense.
Thanks been struggling with this decision. Going with RecPro😅
You’re very welcome! And you can’t go wrong with RecPro 👍
Holy smokes! What an amazing rig dude. Love how you have customized so much of it yourself to meet all your needs. Very impressive 😉 Subscribed 👍
Appreciate that man! Yeah, it’s done us well for the past 5 years now.
Your ear rings are cute. LOL
OMG TYSM 🥰
I want to know about that subwoofer setup behind your theater seats😉
Full details about that in our rig tour at right around the 3:30 mark :) czcams.com/video/q96CKVF8r0g/video.htmlsi=1rR4ubkihJzkUfjJ
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Thank you sir! I'll check it out 😉
I see this video is only 6 months old, so I assume you got a 2023 or 2024 year. But I see in 2020 the fiat jumped from 2500 lbs curb to over 3k with the latest model around 3300lbs curb. Can you confirm and if you do have a 2020+ have you CAT scaled it and also in the rig? Thanks!
This is a 2019 Fiat 500 Abarth. They actually quit making them in the US after the 2019 model year.
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Ah! I didn't catch it being a 2019 and it looks newer. That is great! Good choice as you go through the detail minus the silly beats. Thank you for posting this content!
@@gormay sure thing! Also, if you check out my channel you’ll see that the Fiat crapped out on us in Atlanta and we’ve recently made the switch to a 1995 Geo Tracked 4x4
MORryde, all day long. Lippert can't do anything right.
You’re not the only one with that opinion unfortunately 😖
Question - if you had it to do over again, would you consider putting the retractable roll-up section on the right side, tucked behind the sink since the sink partially blocks the entrance to the shower. We have the same 3 panel door in our G.D. and typically slide the doors to the right tucked behind the sink when entering the shower towards the left side. Seeing the vertical bracket to clip the door to when closed is much thinner than the other side with the role, I seemed to think putting the roll on the other side would be better, but maybe there is a reason why you had to put the roll on the left or that they are made to only roll one direction (not symetrical)? Thanks!
Hey Tom. I think it’s purely personal preference, but we like opening the door to the left. When we had the glass doors, we opened them to the left as well. The door can be installed either way, so if you wanted to open to the right, that would be totally fine!
@@AroundTheSunWeGo Great - thank you for responding that it can be mounted to either side! LOL... my wife just said "of course they enter on the right side and used to slide the doors to the left. Don't you always get in on the end of the shower away from the water and facuets?", so I didn't know my own wife gets in on that side as she is petrified of getting hit by any water that is the slight bit cold. Isn't life interesting that we all don't think the same way. Now if we install this, we will have a domestic dispute of which side it should roll into... maybe we better keep the doors that can go either way until we settle this. 🙂
@@tombrizzi8904 I didn’t think about the water spray, but now that you mention it, that might be why I naturally enter on the right. Haha! Good luck deciding on the install! 😂
Why do they even use it if they know it will peel so quickly?
A good question indeed! But hopefully the new materials they use now are much better.
Thank you for the contact info and warranty program with Lippert! Much appreciated!!
You’re very welcome Bob! I hope it works out for you!
This video is exactly what I was looking for. We have a 2021 GD 397th and want to install a residential fridge. You mentioned you sold some of the parts. Our fridge is still working, but the freezer doesn't really keep it cold enough for long term storage. Where did you sell the doors and parts? Getting something from the old fridge would be nice.
Glad you found the video helpful! I sold all of our parts on eBay.
Great videos! Your first one made me follow you and watch this one! I’m looking for help. My inner door frame is not quite 24 inches. My dual step stairs are 24 inches wide. Will the Lippert model 733931 work? Folding into that door frame looks to be an issue unless the Lippert steps are less than 24 inches wide. I haven’t gotten any answers yet.
Thanks so much! From what I gather, you will need a doorway that is at least 25" wide for the 733931. There is a 713662 that is made for 24” doors, but if yours is less than 24” I’m not sure that would even work. What camper do you have?
Great video brotha!!!
Appreciate it Matt!
Great job bro!!
Appreciate it Joe!
Dude that's awesome!!! That will be one of my first projects!!
I wish we’d done it sooner!
For Geezers like myself all the steps could be much closer together..Lippert is much better than moride step above.
I can definitely understand that! It can be quite a climb to get up into the bigger rigs.
Exactly the head to head comparison I was looking for. Great in-depth consideration of the important factors to consider.
Glad you found the video helpful Nathan!
Great Video, be safe on the road.
Thanks Barbara! And yes, always :)
