In this video, I install to the Solid Step RV entrance stairs by Lippert Components. The Solid Step is designed to replace traditional fold-out or accordion-style RV stairs. The Solid Step assembly lifts up and stows inside the entrance doorway.

The Solid Step has large aluminum treads, and adjustable legs for a solid footing on the ground when deployed, making it more like house stairs.
Installation was quite straightforward, involving drilling pilot holes and screwing the top plate in place. Then adjusting the steps travel locking positon for my particular sized doorway.

I’ve been wanting to do this. I see them all the time when we’re out and about and they look much better and far more solid. At 235 lbs., I get a lot of flex on my stairs and I’ve noted that the whole stair assembly seems to be pointing more and more at a downward angle as a result. I’d rather have the bolts through the floor as that would provide better/longer support over time. Seeing this video is making this a must have item. Thanks for posting this!!
You're welcome James. :) will have a video out soon about installing the optional storage box and a little more info on the stairs, a few people have reported an issue of not enough bottom clearance for the screen and even the main door when they install them. Too funny Ray...I just replaced my saggy old OEM steps on my Sandpiper F295 with the Morryde 4 step system 4 days ago. so very happy and the Mrs. is extremely happy with the new solid steps. Such a great upgrade for either sad old steps or anyone who wants a good solid set of steps.
These steps are great. I am working at a Camping World location now and they are installing these as standard equipment on everything. I plan to retrofit my Cougar XLite with them soon. Thanks Ray!
I added them 2 years ago. 20 minute install. Best upgrade. The jiggle of the old ones were a knee killer.
Our new camper came with 1 of these sets of stairs on it and we love them. Very sturdy for sure.

We hooked up the Lippert 2 steps. No more diving board effect while stepping down off the OEM steps. We also installed the storing box where the OEM steps retracted into.
I thought about upgrading to those steps. Thanks Ray for showing me how easy it is to install.

We had these steps on our previous 5th wheel. They were very nice but like everything else, there were pros and cons. The pros are obvious and wonderful if at a park with a level concrete pad but for us there were just too many cons to want them on our new 5th wheel. We found that if the ground is uneven, it was difficult to adjust the steps perfectly level so the screen and main doors could shut without binding. We were always off a half inch one side or the other which caused the steps to flex when weight was put on them. Those little push pegs you remove to adjust the legs leave a lot to be desired too. We do a lot of camping in state parks so those little black feet were constantly filled with mud. If it was raining when we were leaving, we had to have a towel on the floor or the steps dripped the water all over the floor. We had the 4 step version and although they aren't all that heavy, they're heavy enough that after a while you notice just how heavy they are. They definitely are a two arm/hand operation. When we got our new RV, the first thing my wife said was "I put the steps out with one hand" LOL. With all that being said, they are wonderful steps in the right situation and make it much sturdier when older folks are climbing in/out of your RV.

This was one of the best upgrades I did to my camper. I also bought the toolbox to fill the empty space. I store my landing gear in there.
Just viewing this video and really like the idea of the fold into the camper stairs. We just bought a truck camper and have been trying to figure out what to do for stairs. Home made ones came with it that have to be removed and stowed inside before we travel. Also to complicate things further we have a compartment under where the stairs attach right now so we have to remove stairs to access the storage compartment. Thanks for the great install video.
I had these installed last year Ray. - It was the BEST upgrade we have made to date! - Love em'!
The trailer does not "rock" when going in and out like it did with the old steps.
I'm also adding an extended handle for my wife who is quite short, and was part way up the stairs before she could reach the original stock handle.
It uses the same mounting holes.
We love those stairs! We have one step stairs and those would be a great improvement. It seems pretty easy and straight forward install.

These came on my new Cougar HT 5th well and were really on the wife’s “must have” list. For us they have been great and I may even add them to the bath entry. The few cons are the water/dirt dumping back in the camper (easily fixed by a mat or towel), time to adjust (a small price of 30 seconds for the sturdiness) and my screen protector for the dogs could not close due to lack of space, however today I saw that LCI is now making the screen defender which will work. LCI is really jumping on the aftermarket stuff lately and shipping it out to several CZcams pages to promote. I’ve heard some complaints about the space to deploy them if you keep the RV in storage, but you won’t run into that being full time. Word of advice... just make sure your door is all the way open when putting them up or down so you don’t snag the screen.
Great video Ray on installing my Favorite style of RV step..The Lippert Solid Step. The extra wide steps make it so much safer entering and exiting ones RV ...especially for older users. Coming out of the rig is helped by those bigger steps. Have a great one you twp. bill in Florida

I have these on my trailer as well. They work really well and are far more confidence inspiring for my young kids to go up and down.
It wasn’t until I took the trailer back to our storage compound that I discovered I can no longer get inside with the trailer parked in my spot. There just isn’t enough clearance between my spot and the next one. So if I need to get into the trailer I have to pull it out of the spot every time..

I have just did a ‘major overall’ on my existing steps that where all rusting out. If I had seen this video before probably I you’ll have up-grade my steps. Mine are in steel and very heavy, I would say a good 25 kg, I struggle with a car jack to remove them and install them back. Looks like those ones are made in aluminium, probably much lighter. The only concern is about this problem that some viewer point out about not able to close the door when the steps are out. I have to check this out if I want to make this up-grade in the futur.

Thanks for making this, Ray! I've had my eye on this for some time now, (despite the cost -- wish Lippert would send ME one!!!!) You did solve one of my questions. We too, have that bar that goes across the inside of the screen door, (so far, one of the best upgrades we've done,) and I was concerned if the door would shut with those stairs sitting behind there, but it looks like it's not an issue! I'll be anxious to see how that storage box fits in the old stair cavity, and how you like it!

They didnt work good on my old toy hauler cause the door was 10 feet in front of my axles so a out of level site there were times the legs didnt extend far enough so I would have to put blocks under them to support them. When they reached the ground they worked great

I hope everything is going well for both you and your wife!
What follows is my honest opinion on the steps.
1) Adjustment
I'm finding that the adjustable "legs" aren't adjustable enough when dealing with uneven terrain beneath the "landing point" of the steps. I feel the leg adjustment increments could be better. This step system must be fully deployed, or you will start hitting/rubbing your screen and/or entry door on the "hinge" where these steps fold back inside the trailer.
I sometimes have to leave one, or even both, legs a notch short and find appropriately-sized rock(s) to place under the "feet" of the adjustable legs.
Not a really big deal, but it does seem like an awful lot of "fuss" for steps.
This is a bigger deal boondocking.
2) Weatherstripping
I took delivery of my trailer (new) on October 11th of last year; the steps were factory-installed. The weatherstripping, where the steps "lock" into the door jam, has since showed signs of excessive wear. It got to the point where some water made it inside when I brought my trailer home to wash it a couple of weeks ago. The weatherstripping beneath the step locking mechanism (since replaced) was "smashed" nearly flat.
This is something I'm going to watch going forward.
3) Wet Steps
On a wet, rainy and windy day, it's just not fun folding soaking wet, probably dirty, steps *into* the trailer. The choice is to leave your entry door open while trying to give the steps at least a "courtesy" wipe down, or let it all drip down inside the trailer.
Again, a lot of "fuss" for steps.
4) I think I've hit my primary "don't like" highlights.
On the positive side, on a dry day where the steps are down and in solid, level contact with the ground below, you can't beat them! Absolutely rock-solid! NO "bounce" whatsoever; and that's really nice!
Forgot to say that, yes, I would personally "go" with these steps again on future trailers. This has been my first experience with them.
New equipment.
New knowledge.
New workarounds.

Great improvement
No thanks, I just put adjustable supports under my wonderful 3 step folding steps. The 1st lowest step is most rickety due to torque forces. A block under this lowest step does wonders. They are solid and are perforated so water and much debris falls right through. I'm very happy with the way they fold away and are stored outside under the RV. I'm just not keen on flipping outdoor steps up and inside my rig. I often open my entry door and put a few items that I can easily grab. This style steps would constantly get in my way, plus I would always have to make sure they were very clean. Outdoor steps in my opinion don't belong inside. There is another way to have solid, rigid, non folding outdoor entry steps and easily slip them away and store under the rig outside hidden. All the best with your new steps. Prost

I had the same old folding steps on mine and the same failure with a cracked weld. In my case, it was just a sloppy weld from the factory. Not surprising because anyone who's looked close at RV's, knows how poorly they are thrown together. Anyway, I'm planning to install either a Solidstep or Morryde brand steps like you show. Both are very similar however I'm leaning toward Morryde because they are cleaner design and the leg adjustment is easier using a push-button rather than fiddling around with the hitch pin you show.
If boondocking in a parking lot, I figure you could foldup the steps to slow down an intruder & give ya a little extra time to reach for your peacemaker. Might also help keep a dog from tearing up the screen door if you temporarily leave them in the rig. Sláinte

Let us know what you think after a while. Our 2020 Cougar came with them, and I am unsure. Nice and stable, but if you don't have blocking on a very unlevel site, you can't use them. We had an occasion and had to use bathroom door. Also, nice flag pole video 😁
Will do, I'm on a pretty unlevel site front to back and didn't have a problem. To me, the main problem looks to be getting inside if close to something. When we take the ferry off the Island sometimes the wall is about a foot away from the door.

As far as I know these are not available for motor homes and I understand the safety reasoning, but my coach has a drivers door for a second exit I would love to have these on it

I looked into these, they're not cheap and haven't seen vids where the door closed while steps are extended - can this work?
Thought about this when I skirt my 5th wheel for winter but have a large open breeze way where steps are & hate opening & closing them to enter.

My trailer came with those. I hate them! They are heavy and guaranteed breaking a nail every time you park and have to readjust the legs. Other issues: All the debris that comes in when you fold it in (Despite giving it a shake and sweeping, you'll always get sand and rocks in. you need to be very careful so that the door frame does not get damaged when you fold it up and when you fold it down, before closing the door.
We went winter camping and I fold the steps not to get snowy steps, as I would with the traditional steps, and of course I had to choose between slippery steps or wet trailer...
Another con that I find to be the most annoying is I can't close the door with the steps deployed until I have leveled the trailer. I had an update to my review here czcams.com/video/z444Da45Ph4/video.html

Seems nice, like a little landing area. I'll have to get over my muscle memory, after 9 years of full time living with those stairs the new ones feel weird right now. :)
We’ve been living with a similar step (actually 2 of them) on our new-to-us Arctic Fox trailer for about a month (our 5th rig). We’ve decided we’re not fans of this type of step for the following reasons:
- it takes a lot of time and trial and error with the legs to get the steps adjusted so they don’t bind at the top on the door and sit flat on the ground
- you bring in whatever dirt and moisture on the steps into your rig if you don’t stop to thoroughly wipe them down before stowing them
- the swing radius makes the steps completely unusable in close quarters like an RV storage lot. You have to pull your rig out of the slip to have room to swing the steps down and get into your door.
- A quick entry into your rig at a rest stop, grocery store, service station, etc is made more complicated because you have to fool with adjusting the legs. If the legs are too short, the gas cylinder on the steps will fold them up behind you as soon as you take your weight off the steps.
- the steps don’t handle uneven or sloping ground well.
We like how sturdy the steps are, and I’m Sutherland would be great for those who stay long periods of time in one place. We travel and typically stay 2-3 days in one place before moving on. We also boondock a lot and sand, mud and moisture are constant companions.
We’re planning to ditch our fixed steps and replace them with Torklift Uprising collapsible stairs which address all the shortcomings of our present stairs.
Thanks for the detailed feedback. Are your step 3 or 4? The first thing I think I will do is mod the extension legs so they are much easier to adjust versus the pin they include.

This looks like a nice upgrade. I'll have to price these out. I'm surprised you centered all the screws in the slots though. If they loosen over time, it will shift. I think you should have put a few screws at either end of a few slots.

Sitting here looking at my steps, trying to figure out how to get a wrench in this tiny half-inch space to remove the steps. Really wish you would have shown how you loosen those bolts and remove the steps.

We just installed the moryde step above.simaler install,but our screen door had to be "adjusted" so it would close.i use the word adjusted because mangled didn't sound so pleasant 😬

I tried the MORryde steps also they just was no way to make them work, you must have a Flat threshold plate for these fold up steps to work.
Mine is fairly flat, just a bit of an upward angle, maybe 3/4 inch from floor level. I guess one could remove the plate and plane off some flooring.
Great video. I'm looking to do the same. My question is: How difficult is it to lower them from the inside? I have a motorhome not a trailer, and that is the only door. Thanks!
I don't believe these are really meant for motorhomes but depends on the person, if strong likely not too difficult, but easiest thing would be to attach a strap to the bottom of it, then it could be easily lowered. I love the aspect that they are more solid to walk on, but I would think that with wet feet or just plain camp debris would get in the trailer more. Have you experienced that yet?
Also, I find that I like putting the stock steps away when working on trailer projects so I can stand next to the door and use the entry floor to work on, which would not be possible with these steps.
But I am curious what you experience with these over time?
Just installed today so don;t have any experience with using them much yet.
Although this might be a great step, I ordered mine in February, and now it's June and they still haven't shipped mine. Keep getting the email saying next month, next month. I'm about done with Lippert!

Ray, Thanks for making this video. I'm looking at a unit with a 4-stepper and the strut assist. One of the drawbacks I see for those who store in tight places and don't have the room to put the steps up and down to get inside given how close they are to a wall. Question: Is there any way to quickly and easily remove the steps to gain access? I couldn't see any in your installation or the one I looked at. Thanks for any info you can provide.
When I visit my sister, I park the trailer in her driveway which has a concrete pony wall that blocks my stairs deploying, so I have to remove and reinstall. There are 6 nuts/ hex head bolts (3 each side of the top step to remove the stairs and one nut for the strut to allow the piece left to lie flat. Cheers, Ray
Removing easy dependable stairs and installing PITA over engineered headache stairs....which bring the dirt inside.
My main gripes with them after a year and a half is they need to make the adjusting legs much easier to adjust. The little pins are too picky to pullout and put back in. The other is using in tight quarters like on the ferry is impossible. But for us its a rare issue.
I'm not sure why every one has so much of a problem with dirt. I just use a wisk broom or give them a quick rinse and lay a mat down under them. Hasn't been a big deal. The good part is becasue they are inside they don't get dirty during the travel. The old stairs would constantly be full of road grime from the tire spray and get caked with mud sometimes when I hit a off-road puddle. Cheers, Ray
I was thinking that, after you removed the old steps, the space behind them would be good for storage. One second later, you said they make a storage box just for that purpose. Looks like somebody was thinking when these items were designed. However, these items are probably not cheap.
Damn right they aren't cheap. The steps Ray just put in retail for well over 300 bucks.

I was interested for this on my rig until I heard the rattle. I have a class A and that rattle would would drive me insane!
Yeah, I think they are mostly aimed at trailer owners.
Seems like you could put some rubber weather stripping in there pretty easily, and eliminate the rattling.
Hi Ray love your videos. Question about solid steps since I called Lippert and the CSR tech could not answer question. I would like to know measurement from threshold down to the top step. I know rise between steps is 8” however I read on Lippert site that said mount bracket was 221/4” wide 101/2” high 6” deep making me think first step out of camper is 101/2” down
My first step down is 9" then 8" and 8" Cheers, Ray

We’re the screws and bolts Stainless Steel? I noted one installation option required bolts through the floor and the nuts fasten underneath the RV. Seems like you would have the same rust out issue you previously had if they weren’t Stainless Steel. I have considered these steps but one problem I would have is that when my RV is staged for my pickup, most often, there isn’t enough space between RVs for these steps to fold out without hitting the RV next to me. Great idea but they have their issues as well.
Sorry I might not have been clear. But I was asking about the hardware provided with the new LCI steps.
Don't appear to me to be stainless from my eyes but I guess you could buy some if they are to be exposed. On my rig the bottom of the flooring is covered, already has a protective plastic bottom covering to protect the wood flooring from getting wet so won't be an issue.
Thanks for this vid. I considered those steps when they were first introduced. In fact at the Tampa Super Show a couple years ago, they were giving away those steps with a purchase of a Lance TT. I held off because of the price of the steps but did buy a Lance TT in Prescott, AZ. (Yeah, I don’t understand my thinking either). Too bad you don’t have a $50 off discount code. Does the inside door mat come free? What was Lippert’s guarantee on the steps ? You may have said it but I get hypnotized by your voice and loose consciousness, then End up squeaking like a chicken !

Question, are there no door clearance requirements with these steps? Specifically, bottom of door to floor clearance? We had the Morryde steps put on at the factory. We couldn't do the internal stairs because of our door clearance, 2007 Montana. So we had to go with the manual attachment on the side of the rig. Love them, but I have to lift them into and out of the truck every time we stop. MPITA! If these steps solve that problem I will order them tomorrow. I looked at the installation PDF and did not see anywhere the mention of door clearances. Thanks...
I haven't seen any mention of door clearance requirements either but several people have commented having problems. With so many brands and models of rigs and doors I guess its hard to say if it will fit everyone. But I will pass along the issue to Lippert. On my rig with the combo of the old OEM door sill and the addition of the Solid Step they rise about 1 inch above the floor.
I have this type of step on my fiver and do not like them Main reason is if you break camp and it is raining or has been raining water will drip inside of rig. I keep old towels near door for water.

Does this work with an existing hydraulic door shock mounted on the floor?

Yep, I just check the price, for 600$ you better make sure that the door close when deployed before you purchase...If you could show on a next video where exactly it catches if problems arise it could be useful.
Seems people are running into clearance issues at the bottom of the screen door. Looks like in some cases the screen door height could be adjusted, outside door would be more tricky I imagine.
@@LoveYourRV I installed the Morryde 4 steps and had to remove and trim 1/8th inch off bottom of screen door (easy project with screwdriver and jigsaw) to get clearance for it. Main door fit fine and the weather seals all remain in place. The installation of the the LPI steps and the Morryde are almost identical.
Thanks for the comment. My screen door is a Challenger brand and has some screws on the bottom and sides. Looks like a person could pull it off and shorten it a bit without much trouble. Cheers, Ray

Make these steps “quick release”, or remove able? When I’m storage may be nice to remove so you can get in and out of rig if someone parks another rig too close, so you can’t deploy the steps. Thanks for your videos!!!!
I don't see any easy way with out a lot of modification. I've taken them off for a few situations and it involves unscrewing 3 nuts and bolts. The nuts are nylocks so don't unthread easily. But I guess that is for safety reasons. Though, with a cordless wrench it wouldn't take long at all. Even with a hand ratchet its only a few minutes. Cheers! Ray

I may have missed it in the video, or someone asked this already, but we put in a modification that makes the stair depth inside when the steps are stowed a consideration. Do you happen to have that, or is that on their website somewhere?

You didn’t show closing the door with the steps out. Was there any interference there, or will there be any water ingress because of the step being under the door?
No interference on my rig, doors close fine with stairs out. Not 100% sure about water, just installed it, but don't foresee an issue the outside door overlaps everything and there is a rubber bulb seal on it.
We are having a problem getting our door to shut fully. We've tried with the steps off the ground too so it's not that the steps are adjusted too high

Hi Ray, I saw this a while back. just expensive, (like Battle Born batteries). my RV steps came with bad mounting at the start, yes, I have done my best to keep them tight. Today one of the rivets busted on the side, nearly fell when I heard it break. Only owned this RV a bit more than 5 years. (that was the straw that broke the camels back). I looked them up, a bit more than $500 U.S.. Ouch..... I hope you reply within the a couple hours, I was just wanting to know how they are doing, holding up well? any issues? how easy is it to retract and lower the steps while you are inside the trailer?

Wonder if you mounted inner flange of stairs under threshold plate if it would give you more door clearance (for those who need it)
I put a set on my forest river vibe and had to remove the screen door cause it would not shut with the steps out. Do you have any issues with that on yours?
I just ran into that same problem tonight . The steps installed and now I can’t shut the screen door with the steps down. What a bummer.
Both my doors shut fine, have just enough clearance. On my rig the screen door is held on by 6 sheet metals screws. Not sure if yours is the same but if it is and you have any extra clearance at the top, maybe you can drill new pilot holes for the screws and move the mounting points up slightly.

Does anyone have problems with rain or snow dripping in trailer when closed ? Seems very messy...
They sell a rubber floor tray to catch any water or debris but I usually just give the steps a quick brush or wipe. store.lci1.com/solidstep-all-weather-floor-tray-801380.html The flip side is the steps get stored out of the weather and road grime when traveling so stay in pretty nice shape longer.

I was curious, does your screen door still close with the steps down? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to remove the aluminum threshold (looks like they one-step is specifically designed to go over it? Was wondering if I'll have to cut the screen door height down a bit.

I left mine in place, may remove my steps cause I can’t use the screen door with them.

do you think the 4 step would've been better? since many camgrounds the parking area is usually a few inches lower than where the trailer parks? i'm right at that 36in mark and it looks like the first step is a little tall
No, the 3 steps have worked perfectly for me. 4 steps would have been too long. With my door being near the rear I could have run into a problem on a campsite with a steep slope towards the front. I do a lot of off-grid camping so not guaranteed a level site.
Holy crap, that is expensive. I think I will look at the MorRyde when I replace my steps. I've destroyed my steps twice now due to going on rough terrain.
I'm seeing about a 40-50 dollar price difference but the MORyde don't have the extra large top step.
@@LoveYourRV I thought the price difference was more. I have a smaller trailer and thus need a smaller step assembly. I know a lot of manufacturers now use MorRide as their OEM.

We just installed the stairs and they installed perfectly but our doors won’t close. Any ideas? We watched your video to see if your doors closed but you never closed the doors with the stairs down.

Yup, but most of the lumber here is still sold in imperial and people still measure a lot of stuff using it.
