I use ammo cans extensively for storage in my class a. Everything from tools and parts to well.. ammo. I would use 1/4” bolts instead of the screws. Most screws break pretty easily
I had the same problem and solved it by mounting a battery box on top of the bumper. It is the perfect size to hold all of my connectors an donuts for needed for waste removal and keeps them away from everything else.
Good Idea but I think the weak link in the installation is the screws. Or not sealing them from the elements. Water or moisture will find a way into that box to frame connection and start to corrode. Some silicon or other sealant on the back side where the screws poke through the frame would be a good idea to extend the life of the mod.
@@WillBelden maybe not, but having been a large truck technician and then field engineer, we never put holes in a frame without preparing it for the possibility of rust. The frame isn’t where you want to encourage rust. Some paint or petroleum based preparation would not take any longer and would insure the can and frame were secure.

Dude! This is perfect! I did replace my hose holder with an 8ft section of vinyl fence and used the existing holes to mount it to the frame, that way I can keep 2 sections in one spot. I am going to use the ammo box idea too, thanks!
DUDE! You're killin' me! Just got home last Sat from a 4 day jaunt in the trailer. I kept the trailer in my driveway specifically so I could accomplish a few more modifications that I didn't get to last season when our trailer was brand new. Just finally installed a weBoost cell service amplifier, set up a new griddle, and completed a few other things and TODAY was my day to run the trailer back to my storage facility until next Tuesday when we launch on another 3 day get-away. NOW THIS! I was just brainstorming this very subject on Saturday morning when I was breaking camp down but didn't come up with any great solution to separate out the waste components. This is perfect and I have the components in my garage. So, TOMORROW is trailer return day so I can get my bass boat back home so I can hit the lake asap! Thanks! 👍
Jared, this was a great idea. Thanks for sharing it. I also added an ammo can on each side just forward to the axles and use that to store by wheel chocks. This makes them very handy when needed and I don't have to worry about putting dirty wheel chocks in my storage compartments.
You could do the same thing with a plastic litter container, which if you have cats, is free. And they are yellow, so if you installed on the bumper, it's another reflective point.
Did that 4 years ago with 40mm Mk19 ammo cans on my Forest River travel trailer. Actually had 5 of them mounted and they carried everything from x-chocks, dunnage, power cables, dump tank fittings, and water hoses. I actually have a 50 cal can my fifth wheel now mounted by the dump port that I keep the final 90 and donut in. You can go on line and order a stud that has a padlock hole that you install and you can padlock the ammo can closed.
Such a great mod Jared, thanks for sharing! The only thing I would add is on non-metal cans add flat metal braces inside the can that connected at the screws to keep equal pressure across the can against the frame. Keep them coming!
Love it but maybe grab a piece of styrofoam to stop the pieces from banging around while underway. I am excited to do this. I installed a pair of these 8 years ago to put my wheel chocks in on each side of the trailer, I just replaced them as they were getting a little ugly. EASY TO DO👍

Great idea, I might do the same but with a plastic 50 cal case instead, less weight, no rust, and if for some odd reason it falls off, no serious damage to the rv or others on the road.
Yep, I did that 12 years ago. The tube that held my sewer hose wasn't big enought to hold my Rhino sewer hose because of the right angle connector on the end of the hose. So I took 4 eight foot cedar fence pickets and cut them to 6 and a half foot. then glue and screwed them together. I cut the left orver pieces to make and end and a hinged door for the other end and put L brackets on it, then painted it to protect it. then mounted it to the underside of the rig where the old sewer hose tube use to be. I also made a box to hold my 15 ft. telescoping ladder under the 5th wheel. Having to reach down to my ankles to grab that ladder on the back on the rig while it was shaking was a less than safe way to get down. Now I just climb up the telescoping ladder an step off on to the roof and step back on to the ladder to get down. Sooooo much easier.😊
I like the idea of under mounting and the specified use. Well thought out. Suggestion: I don't know the materials the amo box is made from, but for mounting, I'd go with stainless steel screws.
Harbor Frieght sells a plastic one and goes on sale frequently. I use them for my deep impact sockets. I’m going to get one and see if all my sewer fittings will fit.
Stainless hardware can be pretty, but it isn’t the solution to preventing corrosion. It can often be the opposite. Dissimilar metal corrosion is a major problem with using stainless hardware. Aluminum and stainless do not play well together and the components will self destruct quickly with the slightest moisture. Stainless with steel isn’t quite as bad, but is still a factor. The strength of hardware varies greatly. While some hardware meets certain specifications, much of the “pretty” hardware sold at “hardware stores” is softer than steel comparisons.
I picked one up all my fittings fit perfectly, looks like it will mount fine, I might use a couple fender washers to give the attachments a little more surface support. If it was metal I would not need this.
@@helidude3502 I'm not sure why you're playing up "pretty," since this is probably not going to be seen anyway. The issue is bimetal or galvanic reaction, as you pointed out. Stainless and some steels will have a corrosive interaction with each other, but my guess is that the conditions under a travel trailer will be such that rust will be the first to cause the box or the mounting screws to fail, especially with most self tapping screws, other than stainless. Plus the stainless to steel interaction can be lessened considerably with a buffering material, like a nylon washer, if needed. Another solution would be to use a stronger fastener, like a bolt and nut that would better stand the test of time, but may have other negative effects that would need to be considered, like the integrity of the structure onto which the box is attached after drilling larger holes into it.
I've got a compartment in the rear that I keep the power cord, adapters, hoses and flush equipment. I keep all those things in a container (enclosed w/ lid), but I just might have to look into doing this same setup (as well as finally mounting the hose holder under there too).
Gr8 idea!!! Wish the RV industry would come up with some external storage solutions in the back end of these coaches. I know theres several on the market that are bigger, but the price tag is around $600 and they are dust and water collectors. Several different sizes on both sides as options for your needs would be ideal for storing miscellaneous items as you perfectly articulated and did! Winner winner seafood dinner!!! 👍😃🍻
And that's why I love toy hauler even if you don't have any atv or what not , I literally have garage with me that has 2 sliding beds , I can keep my kayaks bikes you name it inside , and I don't even need to pack it good everything g fits lol
YO! this is fantastic, you just solved so many problems for me. We just picked up a small jayco x17z, and it has quite a lot of storage for the size, but only a very very small exterior door and it's on the opposite corner from tank drains, so I had to either use a bag for all the drain stuff, or find a bin that could somehow fit through the door and hold this stuff. Guess I'll be mounting one of these over there for my gross stuff. THANKS!
For the self tapping screws I used stainless so it doesn’t rust and then I also put red Loctite on the stainless steel screws so I screwed it into the metal. Hopefully it doesn’t come out.
I like this idea. Right now, I just have a clip-lid tub that rides in the back of the truck. With the yellow lego blocks and my wooden home-made blocks, and my water hoses and.....
Great idea. I would’ve mounted it so that the door opens the opposite way, so if it did open while traveling, it the wind will push it shut. I’m going to add this to my RV
I just use a 5 gallon bucket with a screw-on lid for that stuff. It sits in the RV bathroon whrn we aren't camping and in the pickup bed when the RV is in use.
I bought a used travel trailer and the previous owner had installed these already! Difference he screwed the back of it to the frame, instead of under the frame, so its up higher and opens the same way. I wish they made some that were 3-4 foot long. Great thing about buying a used camper, previous owner had done most of the mods you need. My first two campers were new, 3rd was a used one and in the future I may stick with buying used just because of that plus, new campers….expect a year or two of working out the bugs and faulty equipment before having something more reliable.
I made an aluminum box and mounted it between the bottom trim and frame, cut a hole in it and added a door, now the stink slinky has its own storage compartment
You should have patented it and sold it as a kit with the storage tubes! Love your ideas😂

Wow that is pretty genius Jared. At first I thought the hinge should be facing the other way, but I get it now and it opens out of the way. Well done!
Also, these hinges allow the lid to slide off. If it were the other way, every time you opened it the lid would fall/slide off.

A suggestion: place a small container of desiccant out of the way in one of the corners to keep moisture at bay.

I use a plastic ammo can for sewer accessories. I mounted it on the front basket on my teardrop.
Brilliant, I have so many 5.56 7.62, .50 and 20mm cans sitting around. I now have a new use for. There are only so many tool boxes you can make.

I've seen them on bumpers, but I don't like them out and visible, this is perfect to be accessible, yet hidden.

That is a great solution.
Replace the screws you used with stainless steel machine screws and nyloc nuts. This way, it wont vibrate loose and be lost while driving.
