Thanks for sharing the video. I was looking at how to remove that and keep the OD, since that'd help with keeping 4 gears instead of only 3. This gave me an idea: I'm going to setup a new button for the OD wires to connect to, on the console area near the shifter.
Of course no problem, thank you. That’s not a bad idea actually, I might go in & do the same. Thanks for the idea.
Thanks bro this helped out a lot, i got a Lexus es300 and I got the shifter cable lose trying to take out the dumb overdrive
Thank you Steven, appreciate the video!
No problem, thank you for watching.
This will be helpful as I need to take the shifter plate off to replace it as it shattered into pieces when I was trying to remove it to inspect the shifter bulb that I replaced. I then realized to get a new plate over the shifter lever I'm going to have to take the knob off. I dread this but at least you made this video that I can use to get this done! Thank you! Mine's the 2004 Camry XLE so everything is hopefully in the same place.
Oh man, sorry to hear that. Yea it should be about the same. Thank you, I’m glad my video can help you.
Were you ever able to get the shifter plate off? I am trying to replace mine on my 05 Corolla and I can’t find any info online
@@norestjoel Nope. I gave up and took it to a local auto shop. Given that I found snipped wires on the passenger side floormats but the O/D light still lights up when I hit the O/D button on the shifter I think they snipped it and resoldered it back together.
@@Pallandoii great 👍 that’s what I plan on doing thanks
So my issue with Cover of shifter on 92 Paseo would a gaiter cover work ?
Question, will this similar gear shift removal for a 1997 Camry? The gear shift button tab is broken and unable to shift gears.
Yes the removal process should be similar.
Would I need a gear shift that has a button since I can’t pull into any gear once in park? Thanks
Yes you would need a button to at least be able to safely shift your car.
thxx, you're the only video i've found that's doing it on the same car as me, mine being 02. but if i cut the OD wire, can I just leave it down there (cut) and not worry about disconnecting it if i don't care about reusing it?
Thanks I’m glad to be able to help & that’s why I’m here to try to help as many as I can. You can do that but I would make sure to cap them off cause they still are live wires.
@@StevenDIY392 WTF That was gross. You didn't vacuum all that crud. That would drive me nuts.
I have a Corolla runx, gear is similar to this. I have a screw on gear knob, how would I put it on without having a button shifter or having to push down to shift between gear?
Yours screws on, is it an automatic or manual transmission?
🤷🏻♀️ get an adapter or deal with having to push it down , other wise you can’t really.
these are such a pain you were right the much easier way to do this is snip the wires then solder back when installing
I appreciate the video but we missed so much once you got the bezel off. I would've liked to have seen the disconnection of the wires and such. Seems like a lot of work, but definitely worth it!
Thank you and yea I apologize sometimes it’s hard to film and do the job myself at the same time. Taking the center console off was pretty easy, disconnecting the OD button wasn’t to bad but de- pinning it was a little hassle but yea so worth it. If you don’t ever plan on using it again you could always cut it off to make it easier although I don’t recommend doing that.
So if when you first took the knob off if you just cut the wires to the over drive and taped the wires down and replaced the knob you would not need to take the console apart?
That’s what I was thinking
Yes that’s correct if you just cut the wire you don’t have to take the whole console apart just the shift knob.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but since the od light isn’t on the dash after the install, than that would mean Od stays on permanently?
Yes you are correct, good catch thank you.
@@StevenDIY392 So i gave this a shot but i'll try again tomorrow. Are you sure the OD stays on? I really wanna put my new shifter in and this hassle is a big one but it would be so worth it
@@jnthun HELLO! Any updates :)?
@@okcerx I just stopped and left the stock shifter, otherwise no OD which means more gas usage
@@jnthun really? Overdrive didn’t stay on?
The overdrive work
I know this video is kinda old but here goes nothing. If i cut my overdrive wire while overdrive is On does it stay On permanently? Cuz removing the entire center console is a little too much and I've never turned my overdrive off
Yea I don’t blame you l, taking the entire center console out is a pain. Yes according to service information it seems like overdrive by default is constantly on. So when you turn it off & you later turn off your car it resets the OD to back on. So if you cut the wire it should stay on constantly. Hope that helps
@@StevenDIY392 Thx brother
@@Disiplyn Don’t know if it helps but I did the same thing to my car straight up ripped the shifter off and the OD stayed on I just unclipped it after
@@Obsidiansn8k thx bro
@@Obsidiansn8k hey man. Did you actually cut the O/D wire? And just hid it under?
So I pulled apart everything and was going to put it back together and put a new shifter on, but I was told I need my O/D, cause then I will be stuck on third gear and my fuel economy will go down
You can still keep the OD, but OD is over drive it’s like an extra gear you can turn off or on. I’m not a transmission expert but I have had no issues or fuel economy problems. If OD was necessary at least in my particular application they would not have made a button to turn it on or off.
HE SAID SHAFT
why tf did do we have the same fucking shift knob lmaoo no way the same black one lmaoo XDDDDDDDD
Can you just cut the wire for O/D so you won't open all the way down and just pull the knob and replace it.
Yes you can do that, but I recommend not to. If you do I would recommend caping off the wires.
If I do this. Will it cause any problems with the transmission?
@@bonz70 It won't cause problems with the transmission but im assuming that O/D just stays on permanently. Which isn't a bad thing. Ppl don't usually turn their O/D off
@@Disiplyn Did you do the same? Did you cut those wires and just hid it under the console? How was it then?
@@bonz70 I'm going to in a few days. I gotta wait for these specific parts i wanted to get here. But I'll let you know. But i have done alot of research and it seems like you could just cut the wire and that would leave your O/D on permanently. After that its pretty easy to hide the wire under the console
since you disconnected the od will the car stay in od or will it be off?
The OD will remain off
@@StevenDIY392 so what’s the best way to remove the od shifter button but still keep my od on?
@@StevenDIY392 you prob already explained this in the video but I just wanna make sure I do this right
@@CreativeFoodgamingyoutube no problem, so if you want the OB to be functional or to keep using it, you can cut the wires & solder it back once you get the new shift knob on or you can do like i did in the video and de- pin it from the connector & remove from the old shift knob and use in the new one. Or if your getting an OEM knob it might come with a new wiring connector & just plug & play.
@@StevenDIY392 thanks again, very helpful
