      An internal stator, not "rotor", turns a 1:1 'fluid coupling' into a 2.4:1 torque multiplying 'torque converter' !
      Same way a fulcrum turns a 'stick' into a 'lever'...
      ATF fluid isn't just in the torque converter but inside the entire automatic transmission... some manual trannies also use ATF for lower internal friction vs tranny 'grease'...
      At normal driving/cruising speeds, wheels/tires generally spin at 1,000 RPMs or less...

  • @dawsac2335
    @dawsac2335 Před 2 lety +19

    *Summary*
    1. Don’t coast on N going downhill, stay on D or lower gears.
    2. Don’t shift to P before the car stops, reach complete stop.
    3. Try to keep fuel level above quarter full.
    4. Don’t drive with a spare tire for long period of time, get it changed ASAP.
    5. Use the emergency / handbrake when parking uphill / downhill.
    6. In case of water slipping into the transmission, tow it to a mechanic for service.
    7. Overloading your car during hot weather can cause transmission to oxidize - premature wear and tear on the transmission.
    8. Check car’s Manuel before towing for the max capacity of the car.
    9. Make sure to warm up the engine before moving in cold (snowy) environment.

      I always put car in park then enable ebrake. Since like 2012!!! Looks like I've been doing the sequence wrong. Ebrake first then parking P mode. Lmao i got lucky i never park in a steep hill . • @Harry-zz2oh
      @Harry-zz2oh Před 2 lety +25

      @@moileung It all depends on where you live. Your sequence was not wrong for a flat land but in the mountains you want to use the e-brake first so you can put the tranny in Park. My wife has a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the automatic transmission. She has to be very careful because it will pop out of Park very easily. A number of years back a very well known actor was killed when the transmission on his car slipped out of Park and allowed the vehicle to roll down the hill and smashed him against his gate.

    • @Matthew-xm2eo
      @Matthew-xm2eo Před 2 lety +23

      @@moileung It absolutely does not matter if you're parking in a very flat area. If you put the car in park while the car is not moving, then put the ebrake on, you will not wear your transmission. The thing to watch for that would wear the transmission is if you put it in park, let go of the brake, and feel the car roll a little and 'bounce' against the parking pawl. This will only happen if the car is on a hill.

      I don't know anyone besides myself and my wife who always use the "PARKING brake" (not really an emergency brake, is it?) even when parking an automatic (we both have driven manual cars for years). I did have to tell her a few times if you put it in park first and it rolls until it locks, before applying the parking brake, it defeats the purpose... Always stop the car first, then parking brake, then put in Park. If your parking brake doesn't work too well and you need to park on a hill, turn your tires towards (on a downhill) or away (on an uphill) from the curb, let it roll till the tires hit the curb, still apply the parking brake, then put in Park. Moral of the story - always put it in park LAST. I have friends who look at me like I have 3 heads for using the parking brake.

    I drive a Nissan Sunny (manual) in Sri Lanka and I love it. I always prefer manual because of the control it gives me. I don't know about US. But when you take the exam for your driver's license and you decided to drive an automatic car with the examiner, you are not allowed to drive manual vehicles. If you drove a manual, you are allowed to drive a car with any kind of transmission.

    First vehicle I drove when I got my license at 16 was a 5 speed manual. I drove in traffic heavy
    Seattle/surrounding area for years in it. I'd have a pop in one hand and a burger in the other shifting gears in traffic lol. Back then I thought it was so cool that you could start your vehicle by rolling it and popping the clutch. Nothing but automatics for me now.

    • @TheSimoc
      @TheSimoc Před rokem +1

      That's the common everyday practice we do in Europe all the time ;)
      Once learned, everything happens so spontaneously that I have never really found automatic anyhow desirable - instead its outweighing disadvantages keep pushing me off right away.
      For example, oddly enough, while Scotty was talking about stalling at 11:45, completely unrelated footage of exact opposite side of the thing was shown - when you get stuck into snow or mud, you can much more easily get it unstuck with manual as you have direct precise control of torque by ability to arbitrarily "dose" both throttle and clutch separately, and clutch setting acting immediately, and you can even preselect a higher gear which sometimes helps in worst situations.
      In many snowwy and muddy situations I drive with my manual all the time, I have got real troubles when I have been a driver for an automatic, as you cannot engage enough the torque converter without having enough rpm, you cannot have have direct immediate feeling of traction according to throttle (and even less to the nonexistent clutch..), and the level of engagement only changes with significant delay it takes to either accelerate or decelerate the rpm according to the throttle pedal. Not to mention you cannot preselect a higher gear.
      What about anti-skid features and ESC? No, they are of absolute zero help in the stuck situation, as they only take over when a wheel is already slipping, when it is way too late. With manual and a trained "touch", the helpful trick is to prevent wheels slipping in first place.
      Furthermore, automatic is also somewhat problematic during normal driving on slippery road, as the moment of gear change is never completely predictable for the driver, so sometimes slipping tends to occur while gear changes and unprepared driver is not ready to "smooth out" the throttle accordingly. With manual, driver always knows when to chhange gear and is better able to "smooth out" after it by arbitrary controllability of both throttle and clutch. This issue is, though, somewhat alleviated by modern ESC, but still...
      Yet more, IMO, very relevant advantages of manual, any of which I would never tradeoff for the minor convenience of automatic, are the abilities to arbitrarily and smoothedly disengage and re-engage the traction by clutch whenever I want (helpful in some maneuverings and recovering from skid situations), engine brake with arbitrary gear, tow and go long downhills on neutral without lubrication problems, push-start, and move the car with starter when engine inoperable. Not sure whether the need of extra maintenance and proness for faults and costly repairs of the automatics are even worth mentioning.. Also, the ability to have direct (yet arbitrary with selectable gear) coupling between wheels and crankshaft is beneficial in some maintenance work, for example when needing to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt you can hold the shaft and pulley stationary while undoing the bolt by using brakes with gear engaged.
      I would never have a traditional automatic as a daily driver. Another story would be some kind of computer-controlled manual transmission like some semis have. Provided with every control as driver-overridable, it would effectively combine all the advantages of both manual and automatic.

    How did you connect low fuel levels to transmission wear?!? The transmission fluid is responsible for cooling and lubrication as well as operating pressures. The engine oil lubricates and partially cools the main engine components, with the engine coolant being the main temperature control.
    The only two things the fuel would possibly cool or lubricate would be the fuel pump and injectors.

    Most of the tips for preserving an automatic transmission I learned as a kid just watching my mom drive her '83 Jeep Wagoneer. Especially about warming it up; mostly because if she didn't start it, let it run high for a minute, then kick it down to a normal idle and sit there until the needle moved off of the C, it was pretty much a guarantee it was going to die the first time she tried to take off from a stop sign. Never really thought about why that was, just accepted it as one of those things that was a given with an older vehicle, especially since it was a heavily used ranch truck before my mom got it.

    I love your video Scotty. I now fully understand a CVT engine: it’s similar to a bicycle with gears. In 28 of my 36 years of driving I’ve driven manual and I love it. It gives me more control in all situations. My latest car is a Subaru Crosstrek, with a 6 speed manual transmission. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s all-wheel drive. I actually wish I could disconnect the rear wheels from this feature until I needed it, but oh, well.

    Scotty……
    A lot of people with Automatics don’t know how to use the E-Brake 🚨 when parked on a hill,…
    So I’m going to say it one more time…
    Whenever you park on a hill,
    1st shift the car into neutral, while holding the Brake pedal.
    2nd Engage your E-Brake and Let go of the brake pedal slowly, so the car can level. (Your E-Brake must hold the cars weight)
    3rd put the car into Park, Boom done ✅…
    If you do this, you won’t get that Thump sound on the transmission when you shift into Drive from Park…
    You are Welcome !!!!!!

      @bluesoobie Před 2 lety +1

      On Automatics [ AT ] when you press the brake pedal, the computer controls the clutch, and allows you to shift into [ N ] and then into [ P ]

      The only difference is shifting the car into neutral position, and engaging the parking/e-brake…

      I actually have no idea what Scotty was talking about the fuel level. As long as you have enough fuel to run and not too much water condensed in it to cause rough running, the engine and let alone the gearbox couldn't care less.
      Of course it wouldn't hurt to not keep the tank too empty though, as more fuel content lessens the buildup of condensing water, and the main issue of having low fuel level in long term is actually the internal corrosion of fuel tank.

    I found this video educational and interesting. My main concern is with the modern CVT. While I like the way it performs, but is frustrating to not have a dipstick to check fluid level and condition. Plus, it needs a special transmission fluid that is more expensive than the traditional one, and it is harder for someone to do a fluid change at home. The complexity of modern cars makes me wish I held onto my old cars from the 80's and 90's.

For instance, you really cannot warm up a hybrid car, so how does that effect the transmission? If you have a CVT or ECVT that doesn't have fluid is it still necessary to warm up your car (at least for the transmissions sake)?
