This saved my and my wife on our three hour drive across the skyline in Virginia. We pulled off at an overlook to enjoy the view. Jumped back in the car and shifted into drive. the shifter moved, but the car stayed in park. managed to get a signal, watched this video, popped the hood and shifted the car into drive using that lever. we would've been stuck on the mountain waiting for a tow truck. watched another video suggesting the bushing for the shifter cable and the shifter may have broke. drove straight to an auto store, bought the bushing, fixed it in the parking lot and off we were.

You da man. Broke down in the drive through line at a wing shop I go to. Wouldn't go back in drive so I cut it off and then it wouldn't start again.
Ended up being the sensor under the brake pedal that you pointed out. A simple 35 dollar fix. Thanks for making videos like these!!!
Top shelf video thanks, great explanation. I called Roadside assist, luckily the car was still in the garage. He checked the brakes. They worked. The cars reverse sensors worked. But the car could not get into gear or drive. He took off the cover which covers the gear stick and firmly pushed it into gear. I dare say it was the stupid child safety lock.

Sat in Harris Teeter parking lot for 1 gour..3 men came by to help.. told me to press on brakes and wiggle steering wheel..nothing...CZcams you and Bammmm!! Got my car in reverse!!! And drove home.. Using a mini screwdriver.. Thanks.. saved me!! Even had the manager take my plate so they wouldn't tow because it would have been monday!! Saved me!!
That info was on point. Cuz my 1995 toyota corolla wouldn't go into gear. So I popped that flap and pushed that button with a small flat head and it worked perfect. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!

Thank you for this video. Lots of information to know. I have a question. I have a 2017 Mazda 3. And the shift handle has a button in front that you push in while putting it in park etc. when I park that button has a hard time popping out. I have to shift it back and forth before it catches. Any suggestions what it is or what should I do? Thank you

OMG thank you so much! Just return from Dr with my mom pulled In yard np. 2hours later moved car to parking lot In front of door np. Finally got ready to go 30min later my Edge would not go Into gear. No other Issues just would not go Into gear. Found this video that lil button worked. THANK YOU TY TY TY TY TY

Thanks you just saved my life; car was stuck in R. shifter got loose from retractor. Put the E brake on, popped the hood and just put it back on and drove off
hello, what about flat surface - what combination is better to use before parkin - because sometimes I need to pull from P hardly to R position :(
Mahalo Brother! I swapped out the tail lights to LED bulbs, lights were nice BUT my 04' Sienna was stuck in park afterwards. Went on Utube to source suggestions for a fix (found a variety if clips from cable, to brake switch, to fuses). Started w easy fuse fixes but didn't work, then bought and swapped out the brake switch but didn't work. Before moving to removing multiple panels to get to the cables, i found your YourTube vid where you called out 'what potential fuses' to assess. Turned out IGN fuse WAS burnt out. Put in a 10A, but it burnt out, put in a 20A, and everything worked. Nice!

Here's how I learned about that neutral-override button years ago. Pulled up to apartment security gate, foot on brake, car in drive, entered gate code, car died, gate opened. Couldn't shift out of drive, couldn't start car with transmission in drive, couldn't get out of way, cars honking behind me. On request, guy in a truck dragged my car through gate with a tow strap, tires screeching the whole way. Finally got my dad on the phone and learned about that button. Problem solved (minus the fact that it died). I was pissed that the button wasn't labelled. They never are.

Hi - in my Pajero's case, the broken bits are stuck deep inside the cavity of the gear knob. Very tough to get it out. How to open the gear knob? Only then can i put the new sleeve on the white rod below and then lower the gear knob onto it.

@1:05 you're supposed to apply the emergency brake, put vehicle in neutral, release the brake pedal let car nudge forward a little then put car in park.

I'm working on a Buick with this problem, but so far it only sticks when parked uphill. I can't figure out why downhill is still okay, unless maybe a wire get looser if it sits uphill.

How about a 2015 ford focus and it starts up but when you go to put it in drive reverse it won't go or do anything any ideas

I have a 2010 f150 that got stuck in park we used a key to move it into drive and get home on the console shifter. Got home changed the break switch, fuse, shift cable and still having the same issue… gears are all backwards on the console shifter but I believe my husband said the transmission is in proper gears.
Easy fix.....put emergency break on, put car in Neutral, Crank the car and turn emergency break off but thats if your car can cut on but not start nor crank and cant put your car in park and stuck on drive.

Hi! I have foot break, is it the same thing? My Hyundai Tucson limited does the same thing sometimes. I always wondered if it something with parking? When I start the car everything starts except the engine and transmission will not move. I have to wiggle it with force and then start it. Also I noticed when I parked on heel or just slightly elevated areas it rolls when I release the foot break and transmission makes clicking sound and I know I can start the car. I brought it to the Hyundai dealer where we got it, but they couldn’t figure it out which is very unprofessional bcz they charge for appointment and no help!
Any advice on power steering failing???

@5:08 that happened to my old Honda Accord. I had to use that method from time to time. Sometimes the car would shift fine from park into reverse or drive and other times not! So I had to use that method a lot. I kept a jumbo paper clip handy to push down on the shift lock and worked well. I forgot what ended up being the problem but it was fixed and never had to deal with that again!

Newer Dodge Rams have electronic shift knobs that have everything built into them. If they malfunction, you just have to replace them. Dealer cost is over $1200. Part cost $650.
They are such a pain and the littlest thing cause them to lock into park. Makes it to where you cannot drive it no matter what you do. You can bypass the lock in order to tow but you can't put them in gear no matter what if the elect shift knob isn't working.

My Speedo and odo isn’t working as well as having to push the shift lock release button to get it moving.
What about on the steer column on a automatic transmission on the steer column
Important to note: many cars have a shift lock release to the top left of the shifter. If you stick a spare key (of any type) in it, it will release a stuck shift lock.
My car got stuck after parking on a hill and this fixed it.

My Toyota Sequoia, 2013 model with 190K KM gets its gear stuck in P in the morning. When I press the brake pedal a couple of times, it does move and I can change the gear. I wonder what is causing this.

Im an owner of a 01 bmw 330xi and am struggling with this problem.
It started with my steering wheel one day would not come out of its locked position, also the key in the tumbler would not turn at all. (I did some bypass work and steering wheel is free now, however key still will not turn at all.
Pulled up the center console shifter trim pieces and manually pull up on my shifter lock switch to engage it out of park. (Car now is driveable and shifts just fine) i am though still suffering from using the manual lock switch everytime i want my car out of park.
... Long story short, my question is:
Is this problem due to my ignition tumbler not turning causing this shift lock problem, or is it a bad shifter solenoid?
Any input would be great, thanks again, great video with great explanations!
Really hard to say but the fact that your steering wheel also has problems would make me lean towards the Ignition
Thanks for advising people to apply parking brake while foot is on the brake pedal before releasing it; especially, on a hill or with a loaded trailer. I wonder how you would unjam a vehicle from park if it were really bound with binding pressure.

Afraid not!
If it's a Chrysler 300.. it's usually a small broken spring under the center shift console.
I had the same issue. I know about the release lock. My brake lights were working as well. But I forgot that I just did some work on my steering and did not plug the electronic cable which connects to the brake light switch. pushed it back again and gears working fine.
Also if the steering wheel lock you will not be able to start the vehicle and your shifter will not move from park to drive. Only way is to turn the steering wheel at the same time you turn the key for starting the vehicle. When the motor is running or the key is turn to the ignition position you will be able to do it

My gear shift is on the column, where is the bypass for a 2001 Buick century.
My button wouldn’t press-in and I parked in a flat parking lot. I rocked my car back-and-forth several times so I didn’t have to force it out of park like you suggested. If you’re strong enough, you can try this as it worked for me. I’m not sure of the underlying problem yet and it “fixed” itself for now so I would assume the braking system and shift cable are not the problem but for whatever reason the button on the shifter was not depressing. Could 24 years of coffee spilled on my shifter play a role.
24yrs of coffee can do so many wonderful things! (Just look at me)

This happened to my 2015 Honda Civic. So I switched keys and used the spare key and it worked like a charm...go figure.

Found blown fuse and replaced it. Didn't work. Checked all other fuses. Didn't work. Replaced stop light switch. Didn't work. Checked linkage, and it was solid. Still stuck in park with no brake lights. 🤷♂️

Your car still may have an override for the interlock. Check under the column
